The new Xbox 360 'slim' has in-built shut down mechanisms to prevent permanent damage and the 'red dot of death'.
Photo's of the Slim shutting down due to "insufficient ventilation" indicate a new method for the console to protect itself.
As you can see in the photo here, this time instead of seeing the 'Red Ring of Death' users will see the 'Red Dot of Death' as well as a warning message.
The important bit, however, is that it seems red no longer means dead for the 360 since the warning message states, "You can turn the console back on after the power light stops flashing." Phew.
It's still yet to be seen how prone the Slim is to problems a little more serious than a bit of heat, although Microsoft has said that it has fixed the Red Ring problem completely.

Microsoft has said that new motion controller Kinect, coupled with the release of the slimmer, quieter Xbox 360, will help extend the format's lifecycle for another five years.
However, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz last month, European executive Chris Lewis would not be drawn on details about pricing for Kinect hardware or software, nor would he offer any solid details on sales expectations for the new Xbox 360 and the motion controller.
"I think 2010 will be a very big year for us, it is in many ways for us mid-lifecycle," said Lewis. "What you've seen is with this new sleek design and Kinect for Xbox 360 we've got at least another five years of this generation where we continue to offer great experiences for people."
"We continue to attach more games than competitive platforms and we have the healthiest ecosystem with 25 million people connected through Xbox Live. So we are uniquely placed to continue to do really, really well in this business and enjoy ongoing momentum."
Although not offering numbers, Lewis said that sales expectations for the next financial year were aggressive, with pressure from the US on the revitalised system to perform well in Europe, a key territory for the business.
"I can't be explicit about the numbers but I can say our market share has grown. Our business ambition for this financial year, which begins on July 1, is certainly bigger than last year and we constantly set ourselves ambitious targets.
"Don Mattrick is not shy about aggressive targets for Europe because he now knows we've got the right assets, now more than ever, to really appeal to our audience."

Microsoft is paying around $150 in total manufacturing costs for each Kinect unit, Develop understands.
A highly-positioned, trusted source had given Develop the “$150 manufacturing cost” figure on the condition of anonymity, adding that the expenses of Kinect is a topic of concern for his company.
The news comes in the wake of rumours suggesting an internal struggle at Microsoft on the retail price of Kinect, a kit once touted to sell at £50, but now thought will cost over twice the price.
Microsoft says the company “does not comment on rumour or speculation”.

In a special in-depth feature published today, a huge number of the leading middleware companies – from Havok and Autodesk to Unity and Blitz – have been talking over the key trends, opportunities and challenges currently defining the tools and tech sector.
A topic of particular interest is the analysis of Kinect (still called Natal at the time of writing), and its potential effect on those companies increasingly having to cater for ever more platforms and formats.
“Natal opens the door for new category of middleware that will utilise new peripheral hardware capabilities,” suggested Fork Particle’s CEO Noor Khawaja. “I think we will see middleware that does stuff with adjustable intelligence added. A ‘Natal-like’ system which takes interactivity to a new level may trigger the trend for artificial intelligence and decision making technology applied to gesture recognition, facial expressions and emotions, and conversational speech. I think these are only a few applications and there is room for many more."
Furthermore, with the extended console life cycle Microsoft has suggested Kinect will introduce, there are even more reasons to be optimistic, according to some.
“I think everyone will benefit from an extended hardware cycle. For example, we have a lot of product and technology ideas that will run perfectly fine on current hardware. In addition, Natal and Move itself are opening up very compelling opportunities for technology providers," stated Torsten Reil, the CEO and co-founder of human body movement experts Natural Motion.
However, with Kinect and Move joined by the likes of 3DS, stereoscopic 3D, Gaikai and Onlive, some argue there is a danger that smaller middleware firms will be lost in the explosion of platforms, interface approaches and distribution models.
“The danger is that small middleware companies could reach a tipping point, where they are forced to spend more time ensuring compatibility with an explosion of platforms than making their core product better,” warns Frank Kane, founder of sky rendering experts Sungdog.

icrosoft has claimed that there's nothing PS3 can do in terms of 3D that the Xbox 360 can't emulate.
Speaking exclusively to CVG, Xbox global marketing boss Albert Penello said that Xbox 360 was "technically" ready for the 3D revolution.
However, the exec added that Xbox was "happy to follow" on the tech until player adoption rates made it worthwhile.
When asked if he was concerned that Sony had "got there first" with 3D tech, he replied:
"I'm not. We have 3D games - obviously the Avatar game came out last year - and the console fully supports 3D. But for us right now, we're more on the 3D input take, you know, revolutionising things with Kinect.
"We're going to take more of an attitude of seeing what the adoption looks like. Right now, there's nothing technically that we can't do on the 3D side - we already have games out there today.
"For us, it's more going to be let's see what the consumers say. Let's see what happens on the TV side and the sell-through side. It's something I think we're going to follow on, and that we're fine to follow on.
CVG then asked if Xbox 360 could do everything that PS3 can in terms of 3D.
"Yeah, that's true," said Pernello. "I think that when we decide we want to jump into 3D it'll be because the consumer's voted. But from a technical side, there's nothing about it we can't do. In fact, we're already doing it today."
Microsoft's big hardware announcement at E3 - the new 250GB 360 SKU - has gone down well with the media and gaming fans alike.

Microsoft's decision to create a 'skinny' version of Xbox 360 has raised some eyebrows amongst industry watchers - as the E3 announcement comes just under a year after Sony revealed their own lean PS3.
But the Redmond-based platform holder has insisted that Sony's sleek 'Slim' console - announced in August 2009 - didn't influence the creation of the new 250GB Xbox.
Microsoft took the wraps off its new hardware SKU at the end of its E3 conference last week - to plenty of applause and whoops from the crowd.
When CVG asked Microsoft's worldwide product marketing manager for Xbox, Ryan Moore, if Sony's latest console had inspired the new 360, he replied:
"I think the decision to do this was made before their announcements last year. It's part of the natural generation of a console to refine the components and make it sleeker and quieter and all that.
"I wouldn't say it was directly related [to PS3 Slim]."
The current slim Xbox 360 model comes with internal Wi-Fi, a 250GB hard drive and retails for $299 (£199) - but it's reported that Microsoft will release a cheaper SKU later in the year.

modrobert writes: "The new Xbox360 S(lim) has been disassembled by solomods.com. This particular console has a Philips/Lite-On DG-16D4S DVD drive installed with firmware version 9504 which should be possible to dump using the MRA method assuming the chipset is same as in previous drives. Lets hope someone flashes the DVD drive with iXtreme soon rather than doing a LED case mod."

We told you it was beautiful -- but in case you didn't believe us, you can watch a trailer after the break. Ubisoft's Rayman Origins is a gorgeous game, and uses the new Ubiart framework to deliver "full HD" 1080p visuals. According to the team's official blog, Origins will be delivered as episodes "because big games take a long time to make" and "episodes also let us imagine a longer and more developed saga than with a more 'classical' format."
Although specifics weren't mentioned, it's easy to imagine that Origins will end up on services like PSN and XBLA as a downloadable game. The team appears to be aiming for a release "this year," which has our digital wallets quivering in anticipation.

Well, none of this will come as a big surprise here, but it's always nice to hear it straight from an official source. Microsoft has confirmed that a $199 version of new Xbox 360 will be coming in the fall to replace the now-$149 Arcade, which is no longer in production. In addition, the company's also spilled a few more beans -- Kinect will be available as a bundle with the new Xbox 360, and though there isn't any official pricing information on that one just yet, we've seen some telltale evidence on that front which would lead us to believe it'll run somewhere in the neighborhood of $399 for an Elite and $299 for the Arcade. So now you know.

Schlepping your Xbox 360 around in your carry-on is a hardly ideal solution for platinum-level frequent fliers. Not only does it take up a significant portion of your roller, but once you get where you're going there's no guarantee that your hotel's wood-paneled tube will know what to do with your high-end gaming machine. Enter the GAEMS Portable Console Gaming and Entertainment System, which carries not only an Xbox but also a 15-inch, 720p LCD in the lid, and speakers to boot. Flip open your console and you're good to go, though we're wondering whether there's room in there for the power brick too. We do know that your controllers will not fit, which seems like an unfortunate design choice if you ask us. The GAEMS suitcase ships sometime before the end of the year for around $250, and yes there are PS3 and new Xbox 360 versions coming too.

June 19th, 2010, 12:12 Posted By: wraggster
Bungie's final Halo game is a "labour of love" that will "push the envelope as much as possible" without "ruining the core for fans".
That's according to exec producer Joseph Tung, speaking during a behind-closed-doors E3 presentation where Bungie played through the single-player campaign mission The Long Night of Solace, which featured heavily in Microsoft's press conference.
It was the big surprise in the E3 reveal of Halo: Reach, and Bungie used the session to confirm that space dogfighting will be fully playable in four-player co-op - appearing only in a single mission.
"It takes place about midway through the campaign," explained Tung. "At this point in the campaign the Covenant are invading Reach in full force. The situation's getting pretty dire, but the second in command of Noble team has figured out a way to bring the battle to the Covenant."
The mission begins planetside with some classic Halo scrapping against Covenant forces, ably showing off the game's substantially improved visuals. But the shock of the new comes upon boarding the cockpit of a Saber craft, which blasts skywards in a moody cinematic sequence and leaves orbit as control is handed to the player.
The mission was designed by Sage Merrill, Bungie's sandbox designer, whose previous work on Crimson Skies has clearly had an influence.
"We looked at lots of other flight games that were out there," said Tung. "We didn't want to make a flight simulator for Reach, we wanted to make a very accessible, easy-to-use and fun-to-play space mission. Sage did an amazing job in nailing the Saber in that regard."
The Saber boasts regular lasers and targeting missiles, with meters for shield, hull integrity and thruster heat on the HUD. Tense combat ensues in the shadow of the looming presence of Reach, and as a visual spectacle the set-piece is undeniably spectacular.
"The Saber is limited to Campaign," said community writer Eric Osborne. "The whole mission isn't Saber; and there's something after that we're not revealing." Tung added: "You can play four-player co-op and everyone will have their own Saber in campaign."
Reach is Bungie's final game in the series it created, and Tung admitted it is a "sad goodbye" for the studio. "The team is extremely proud of the game. There's always stuff that falls by the wayside, but I think we got everything in that's critical to the game and more."
The studio also confirmed that Reach will not offer Kinect support, Tung explaining: "I wouldn't say it's not suited, but for us Kinect came online when we were already a year and a half into production and it was impossible to think about integrating it at that point."
Once development wraps, Bungie is committed to supporting the game post-launch and, while refusing to be drawn on details, Tung said: "We expect to put the same support into Reach that we did with past games.
"Reach is absolutely a full-fledged project at Bungie. The number of features you're going to see overall is greater than any other project we've shipped."
Halo: Reach comes to Xbox 360 on 14th September.

June 18th, 2010, 18:36 Posted By: wraggster
Is lag a problem for Kinect? Not according to Rare, the studio tasked with producing one of its flagship launch titles, Kinect Sports.
Speaking to Eurogamer in LA this week, Nick Burton, exec producer of technology and communications for the Britsoft veteran, claimed earlier problems had been overcome. "Lag is not an issue," he said. "As with any prototype stuff, of course it was in the past. That's to be expected.
"Where we're at now, not at all. Yes, we've done a lot work to make sure it wasn't a problem, but when you've got something that's copying what you're doing you can't have a lot of lag."
Burton said lag for Kinetic Sports is set at 150ms which, as Digital Foundry smarty-pants Richard Leadbetter pointed out, does not include TV lag.
Lag is more evident in some titles than others at E3 this week and, since some degree of it is unavoidable, the onus will be on developers to work around it to ensure acceptable response times.
Meanwhile, the studio was also keen to dispel the belief - amplified by the recent rebranding - it was now focusing exclusively on casual games.
"It's been the focus for the past couple of years, but we're going to do all kinds of stuff," Burton said. "Obviously the rebrand for us was more about we wanted to freshen up the image - it was just time for a chance. We've done it before, we'll probably do it again.
"We are continually looking at what the next thing's going to be. It might be casual, it might be core, we've had such an eclectic mix over the years and we'll continue to do that."
He added: "It's not always going to be as casual as [Kinect Sports]; this is just something we got really excited about."
Burton refused, however, to be drawn on the studio's other projects, stating: "This is the only Rare game you're seeing at the moment."
While Kinect Sports can be seen as filling the 'Wii Sports' role in the initial Kinect line-up, Burton said the experience on offer is far more advanced.
"There's so much more data, so much more fidelity, so many more things you can do," he said. "Kinect's not just about tracking - there's voice recognition, identity, so many things. It's more than the sum of its parts. I've been involved for a couple of years and even now we're like, "Wow, there's all these things we could do!"

Anyone can take a hammer and rib-spreader to a new piece of hardware. But it takes someone like Anand Shimpi, the man behind Anandtech who has personally suffered through four out-of-warranty Xbox 360 failures, to bring sage analysis to a teardown of the new Xbox 360. His reluctant sixth Xbox 360 is the new slimster (codename Valhalla) which, for the first time, combines the CPU, GPU, and eDRAM onto a single chip -- previous Xbox 360 motherboards featured two discrete packages that split the CPU from the ATI designed Xenos GPU and eDRAM. The design allows for a single heatsink to be cooled by a single, larger fan making the new Xbox "noticeably quieter," measured at 45dB when idle or 51dB with the 1.5Gbps SATA Hitachi HTS545025B9SA00 with 8MB buffer spinning at 5400RPM -- that's down from 50dB and 54dB, respectively, as measured on late 2008 through 2010 Jasper-class 360s. Regarding power consumption, Anand measured a 50% reduction from the original 2005 Xbox 360 (25% less than Jasper-class rigs at idle, or 20% to 17% less under load) and pulled just 0.6W when "totally off" compared to the 2W of vampire power pulled by older 360s. Anand speculates that Microsoft might finally be using cheaper 40nm components. However, we shouldn't expect to see a price cut anytime soon as it will take Microsoft awhile to ramp up the material and manfucaturing cost savings. Regardless, with Kinect and several new game titles on the horizon, Anand concludes that there's still pleny of life left in the old Xbox 360 platform for those looking to make the jump.

A few screenshots of the Xbox 360's new Kinect-accommodating dashboard have hit the net.
One of the shots shows a Catchphrase style reminder, "If you see it, just say it".
There's also a little hand icon in the bottom right corner, presumably a reminder that you can move and select items by waving just like in Minority Report.
Sure it's cool, but is it £100 cool? Both Amazon and Gamestop have listed pre-orders for the motion control with a 100 quid price tag.
There's still been no official word from Microsoft about how much the motion control will cost.

Was Microsoft’s Kinect a disappointment? Convention-hall wisdom already seems to suggest so.
Certainly, the over-earnest plastic smiles slapped over its claim of being family-friendly – a claim backed only by a parade of HD Wii clones, and an iffy Star Wars pitch – marred any optimism for the scope and potential of the camera controller.
After being billed at E3 2009 as the revolutionary Project Natal, the Kinect that emerged at E3 2010 appears unambitious. Unlike the first Wii unveiling in 2006, it lacks the ‘that looks fun – give me a go!’ factor. And niggling ‘it’s too good to be true’ questions persist.
Sony has the first Move advantage when it comes to next-gen motion control. The PS3’s controller launch in September will likely offer a smoother transition for those customers wanting to upgrade from Wii that Sony and Microsoft are keen to court.
But I consider Kinect a dark horse, and I don’t think anyone should rule it out just yet.
Like the Wii and DS touchscreen, it pushes the industry in a direction it hadn’t considered before. And those provocative questions are what video games can thrive on when at their best.
Sure, if 3DS arrives around the same time as Kinect, I know which ‘new tech’ my money is on.
But what we’ve seen of Kinect is just the start – hopefully the next wave of titles will fulfil its potential.

June 18th, 2010, 18:23 Posted By: wraggster
Burger King has announced a deal with Microsoft to support the launch of the upcoming Kinect controller, released in the US on November 4. No details have been confirmed as to what the involvement will lead to at this time.
The announcement comes in the wake of the highly successful 2006 run of Xbox 360 titles that were made available with Burger King meals in the United States. Those titles were developed by UK studio Blitz Games.
No word has yet been given as to any Blitz involvement this time around, or even as to the availability of any products the deal may produce.
“By making you the controller, Kinect for Xbox 360 is uniquely magical and instantly fun. We’re excited to partner with the Burger King brand to bring that magic to everyone this holiday season,” said Burger King North America chief marketing officer Mike Kappitt.
“Our first endeavor with Xbox 360 took the gaming world by storm, so we couldn’t pass up the chance to come together on another cutting-edge program. During this year’s promotion, our guests can look forward to an even greater adventure that will stimulate the imaginations of gamers and entertainment-lovers of all shapes and sizes.”
“While full details of the promotion are still top secret, we’re proud to be the first and only brand in our industry to stand behind this pioneering experience that will forever change the way the world looks at entertainment,” he concluded.

Despite assurances that it is does indeed have a 3D strategy, Microsoft omitted any mention of the merging tech from its E3 press conference press conference. And now it seems that the platform holder has cooled any plans it has regarding future 3D support.
“If you look at the costs of entry into the living room and when that's going to become mass-market, we think the offering with Kinect and the natural user-interface we're bringing, that's a more compelling proposition for consumers over the coming years than maybe looking at 3D at this point,” UK boss Neil Thompson told AfterDawn.
The lack of E3 news at E3 was all the more bewildering considering the confirmation that EA’s Crysis 2 will offer stereoscopic functionality on both PS3 and Xbox 360.
Microsoft’s gamble is a risky one. With Sony placing plenty of resource into the PS3’s 3D push, if the technology does take off it will give PS3 a tangible advantage in the marketplace.
