Trial begins in 'Xbox slaying' case

Posted By: wraggster

The high-profile Florida murder trial known as "the Xbox slayings" began today in St. Augustine, where it was relocated after officials decided the Central Florida town of Deltona, where the murders occurred, would not be able to handle the media attention.

Just a day after the 12-person jury--five men and seven women--was selected, the prosecution presented their opening statements in the case that will decide the futures of Troy Victorino, 29, Michael Salas, 20, and Jerone Hunter, 20.

The three men are being accused of taking the lives of Erin Belanger, 22, Michelle Nathan, 19, Francisco Ayo-Roman, 30, Anthony Vega, 34, Roberto Gonzales, 28, and Jonathan Gleason, 17, in August 2004. The trio, along with Robert Cannon, 19, allegedly beat and stabbed the victims to death after Belanger took an Xbox from the house where Victorino had been squatting.

Prosecuting attorney John Tanner described the gory details he is building his case around. "The girls are screaming, the solid, sickening sound of bats on flesh and bone. You hear the screams of the dog being smashed in the face. It will come alive for you in this trial." He claims the events all happened "in a matter of minutes."

Tanner is going to need to more powerful remarks like that as his side was dealt a devastating blow today. Cannon, the alleged fourth participant in the slayings, refused to testify for the prosecution. The 19-year old had previously made a plea to cooperate and testify against Victorino, Salas, and Hunter, in exchange for being spared the death penalty. Cannon would not take the stand and asked to withdraw his plea.

The defendants are facing six counts of first-degree murder, five counts of mutilating a dead human body, as well as other felonies.

Wolf3D OpenXDK Port Released (Legal Game Port)

Posted By: wraggster

th0mas has released a port of Wolfenstein 3D for the Xbox using the legal OpenXDK:

After some newfound interested in the OpenXDK, a workaround was found for input handling so input now works 100% (!!), so I guess it's time to release some ports . I bring you a completely legal port of Wolf3D, the classic id FPS. It comes all ready to play with the shareware data files - unfortunately I don't think the registered datafiles or expansion packs will work at this time. If there is interest in getting this to work let me know and I'll see what I can do. Anyways, binary release - just unpack and copy to your xbox, data directory intact. Source release - have fun, requires OpenXDK from CVS or better.

Bugs:
* Savegames get reported as corrupted.. but they load fine.
* Sound doesn't work
* Strafing over an item does not pick it up

Controls:
* triggers to fire
* A to open doors
* X to strafe, B to run
* Start/Back are Enter/Escape

If anyone really can't handle that keymapping let me know and I can change it.

FBA-xxx Pro v1.21

Posted By: wraggster

+ T + released a new version of FBA-xxx Pro.

What's new:

* Fixed encrypted Neo-Geo games not loading.
* Fixed UI background music and options.
* Fixed problem where incorrect ROMsets were loading even with CRC Check on.
* Corrected some DAT errors.
* NOTE: In order to fix the problem with large NG ROMsets locking up the emu, the rumble feature has been disabled in this build. Loading encrypted ROMs takes alot of memory and it would seem there simply isn't enough for both. FBA-XXX doesn't come up against this problem as the only versions of these games it supports are decrypted. Hopefully this can be resolved in a future build.

New Halo comic announced

Posted By: wraggster

At the Comic-Con held in San Diego last week, Marvel and Bungie announced plans to launch a new monthly comic titled Halo Ongoing.

As you might have guessed, it'll be based around the hit Xbox shooter, but that's all there is to report so far - there's no word on the comic's plotline, or on which artists and writers have been signed up to produce it.

Halo Ongoing is set to appear in shops later this year, following the release of the Halo Graphic Novel. As previously announced, the 128-page book will go on sale in the US this July, and its storyline will focus on the battles between the Covenant and the Flood.

"Xbox" murder case jury to deliberate

Posted By: wraggster

Three men have been accused of killing six people with baseball bats over a stolen Xbox console and some clothes, at least that's what CNN is reporting in a story they dub the "Xbox murder case." The jury began deliberating yesterday. If found guilty of first-degree murder, the men will face either life in prison or death by lethal injection.

We can't help but think that despite the "[stolen] Xbox game system and some clothing" being cited as the murder catalysts, heavy placement was put in connection to video games.

3 Convicted In Xbox Slayings

Posted By: wraggster

Jurors deliberated about six hours before returning its verdict against Troy Victorino, 29, and Michael Salas and Jerone Hunter, both 20.

Prosecutors said Victorino was angry with victim Erin Belanger, 22, who had him evicted when she found him living in her grandmother's home in Deltona. She kept some of his belongings, including some clothing and the video game system.

Victorino had no reaction as the verdict was read. Salas dropped his head as the first count was read.

During closing arguments, defense attorneys tried to shift the blame from their clients. Attorneys for Hunter and Salas said their clients were intimidated by the 6-foot-7-inch, 270-pound Victorino, and wouldn't have entered the house if they had not been threatened and coerced.
