Quake 3: Arena for Xbox Released

Posted By: wraggster

Carcharius posted this:

The first version is finished and now released to ‘the usual places'
I hope everyone enjoys what is there and doesn't moan too much about what is missing!
Many thanks to everyone for all the comments and messages of support that have been made over the past few weeks.

Introduction
This is the Quake 3: Arena game engine ported to run on the Xbox.

So what does it do?
As it stands now it will let you play the single player game portion of Quake 3: Arena. You should also be able to play on a network and over the internet, against other Xbox players as well as people running Quake 3 for the pc. For internet play you will require a valid CD key from the pc version of Quake 3.

It also has the ability to load and run some of the many mods available for Quake 3.
But please be aware, there are some mods that will run fine whilst others won't run at all. Unfortunately this is due to limitations in the Xbox hardware (basically it's a very tight squeeze trying to get Quake 3 to run at all using 64MB). I have not tested many mods, really I've done nothing more than try a couple to make sure that the mod loading process is working properly.
If you intend to try running any mods I strongly suggest a usb keyboard and/or mouse be attached to the xbox. Without them it may prove very difficult, even impossible, to navigate through the mod's interface and get a game running. This is because none of the mods available will be setup to work properly with the xbox controller.
If any mod authors do wish to make their mods compatible with this port then please drop me a line and I can let you know what (simple) changes are needed.

OpenDash Windows Build 396

Posted By: wraggster

th0mas (d0wnlab) released a new Windows build of OpenDash (an opensource dashboard currently in development for xbox that can be built with the legal OpenXDK some time ago.

quote:

am releasing another windows build of OpenDash. It includes updates on the previous release such as:
* Skin/config separation. Now skins exist in seperate directories. They can also be loaded on the fly from within the dash.
* multiline text messages
* copying files/directories with progress bar display
* internationalization

It contains a demo skin made by myself, as well as a copy of Pred@tor's skin.
I am in the process of registering a sf.net project to host the code, so that the code exists in a central CVS repository instead of my hard disk. People interested in contributing should talk to me. An xbox release will be soon, but don't get too excited - there are still a couple bugs with the xbox build that I haven't been able to fix just yet, and a number of features that are not yet stable.

Arcade Sticks Comparison Chart - Choose the Best PS2 and Xbox Weaponry

Posted By: wraggster

News from Lik Sang

The Lik Sang Tech Team took some quality time over the last couples of weeks in order to deliver to you, fighting gaming fanatics, the ultimate comparison chart to rely on when considering the purchase of a high-quality Arcade Stick for your home system. We browse through the most refined selection of gear for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and judge each of them based on various key criteria: Weight, Dimensions, Stick Type, Type of Switch, Type of Buttons, Number of Action Buttons, Size of Buttons, Reactivity of Buttons, bonus features such as Auto-Fire or programmable combos, and, finally, cross-compatibility with other platforms using Smartjoy adapters - we got it all covered.

The Arcade Sticks Comparison Chart is coming in a completely flexible design allowing you to choose on which points you want to compare the Sticks as well as which Sticks you are willing to compare. Take a look at the screenshot below to give you a rough idea, then hurry up to the Arcade Sticks Comparison Chart to check the real thing!

Our Top 3 Contenders

After long arguments in the gaming room, we ended up selecting three Arcade Sticks as our favorite all-around choices. Our top 3, in no particular order, stars Hori's Real Arcade Pro Stick, NubyTech's Street Fighter 15th Anniversary Arcade Stick and Sega's re-born Virtua Stick from the Saturn. The Street Fighter Stick is currently on backorder, the next delivery of it is expected by early December. Both the Virtua Stick and the Real Arcade Pro are in stock and shipping within 24 hours

All these three are massive heavyweight champions and have enough power to please the crowds, from the first-time Stick buyer to the most demanding Street Fighter specialist, with thousands of tournament and competition hours behind him. It's high quality gear we are talking about here, and selecting a clear-cut winner is a tough job. As a matter of fact, the core features being packed in each of these bad boys, the slight style variations are more a question of personal taste really. Where the Hori Real Arcade Stick Pro seems to be the favorite choice for Japanese style lovers (ball stick and sanwa type buttons), the Street Fighter Anniversary Stick is for sure a stylish option when you prefer American style control (HAPPS buttons and bat stick). Then, in the middle, Sega loyalists will just go for the Virtua Stick, also a Japanese style peripheral, with its own legend behind him: the Virtua Stick appeared first on Saturn 10 years ago, made of real parts from Sega's arcade cabinets, then inspired the shape of the well-known Dreamcast Arcade Stick (known as Agetek Stick in the USA), before finally coming back to the PlayStation 2 and to Computers earlier this year. Long time followers will not bother about other options and will not hesitate getting back the same old feeling which they already loved in the nineties.
