Peter Molyneux has labelled demos "a horrible concept" and revealed plans to release upcoming action RPG Fable III as a series of downloadable episodes.
"Soon after the retail launch we're doing episodic," he said at the GameHorizon conference in Gateshead, and reported by sister site Gamesindustry.biz.
"We break it down in chapters. We give away the first chapter entirely free, the first hour. When you reach a certain point in the game it says 'thank you for playing the pilot of Fable III, do you want to spend an extra 2-5 or whatever dollars to buy the next episode, or buy the whole lot?' Press 'yes' and you will immediately continue playing."
"It supports this freemium idea," he added. "It gets around this horrible concept of demos. Anyone out there who thinks a demo is a good idea is crazy. It's never a good idea, because demos are usually done at the end of a game and they require an enormous amount of design talent to make a demo. The other thing is you're more likely to satisfying the curiosity of a user rather than entice them to play more."
Molyneux insisted selling Fable III in downloadable chucks as well as at retail will help achieve targeted sales of five million and generate a whopping $150m in profit.
"We are driving to sell more than five million units and to make a profit in excess of $150 million. We have to do that because if a franchise doesn't reach that level it will inevitably wither."
We've seen this approach before, of course. Nine months after the release of Fable II, Microsoft sold the game in downloadable episodes on Xbox Live.
Apparently the first episode was downloaded 1.6m times, and as a whole the episodes earned $15m.
Fable III will be released on 26th October simultaneously for PC and Xbox 360.

UK retailer ShopTo has called for Microsoft to lower the price it expects gamers to fork out for Xbox 360 motion sensor Kinect.
ShopTo pre-orders for Kinect are open now with a £124.86 price tag.
The current RRP of £129.99 and release date of Friday, 19th November listed on ShopTo are "placeholder", CEO Igor Cipolletta told Eurogamer this morning.
However, Cipolletta guaranteed those who pre-order Kinect will get the Xbox 360 add-on for the listed price irrespective of whether Microsoft's trade price is higher.
"It's too high," Cipolletta said of Kinect’s pricing.
"We believe that with this current economy it should be around £70. For £140 you can buy a Wii.
"Pre-orders are very low," he added.
Cipolletta doesn't expect Microsoft to bundle Kinect with the new Xbox 360 250GB model, set for a UK release on 16th July, although admitted that Microsoft may reveal such plans in the near future.
Last week Microsoft popped Kinect on its own online store priced $149, despite spokesperson Aaron Greenberg's repeated assertions that the $149 price tag put forward by US retailers is "purely speculative".
Cipolletta said that he has been told that Kinect's rumoured US pricing is correct, and based ShopTo's pricing on it.

Technical data revealed on retailer site Play.com appears to confirm that the Xbox 360 Kinect system can only support two players at a time in-game.
The data represents the most detailed information so far released, with the most controversial being the specification of Kinect's skeletal tracking system. The system is listed as being able to track 20 joints per active player and to map them to Xbox Live Avatars.
Although up to six people can be tracked at a time only two active players can actually take part in a game at once.
Although Microsoft has been inconsistent in defining the upper limit for the number of players using the system, it has previously been implied that up to four could take part at once.
Other notable specifications, as examined by Eurogamer's Digital Foundry, include the 320x240 resolution of the camera - reduced from the 640x480 resolution of the original PrimeSense technology that Kinect is derived from.
The 20 joints limit has also been reduced from the Project Natal demos that used 48 points at gamescom in 2009. However, Digital Foundry suggests this has resulted in only a negligible change in performance.
Although the Play.com data appears to be from official sources Microsoft has yet to release any advanced technical data on the system, while questions continue to linger over Kinect's ability to track players while seated.

UK retailer ShopTo has claimed Microsoft's motion sensor Kinect will carry an RRP of £129.99, and be released on Friday, 19th November.
ShopTo pre-orders are open now with the price trimmed slightly to £124.86.
No other major UK retailer - Play, Amazon, GAME, HMV - has a price or date listed for Kinect.
ShopTo hasn't responded to our request for comment.
Microsoft has yet to announced an official price for Kinect, despite the company's own shop listing a $149 tag.
Kinect will be released on 4th November in the US and the rest of the world thereafter.

June 30th, 2010, 21:04 Posted By: wraggster
Retailer Play.com has published new specifications for the final Kinect hardware.
While the information is unconfirmed via official channels, Play said that the details are direct from the manufacturer, while specs collected by Digital Foundry but not published to date tie in extremely closely with the new data. The smart money is on this being the real deal.
Perhaps the most interesting information we can glean from this is in how the final production Kinect camera differs from the reference technology designed by Microsoft partner PrimeSense.
The Israeli company, who we interviewed back in April, provided the basic design that Microsoft adapted to create the-then Project Natal. Its camera features much the same viewing characteristics as the final Kinect in terms of field of view, but its depth map is much more detailed: 640x480's worth of resolution up against Microsoft's 320x240.
If the depth map has been scaled back, so has definition of skeletal tracking. The new spec suggests 20 points that make up the human skeleton while our demo of Natal back at gamescom last year revealed that 48 points were used.
Having played the same game in both iterations of the hardware, it has to be said that aside from small "jumps" in the fidelity of the 1:1 skeletal tracking, the overall experience is fairly close despite the spec cut-backs.
Probably the biggest concern is the low-resolution depth map, but again, the cut-back does make sense.
In our gamescom demo, presumably using something closer to the original reference design, Kudo Tsunoda expressed reservations that hand and finger tracking would work consistently with the camera simply because human beings come in all different sorts of shapes and sizes. There would be no way to ensure accurate tracking of a child's fingers, for example.
Therefore, for the sake of reliability, the emphasis would shift to tracking the whole body and at that point the need for the VGA depth map was less apparent, although clearly tracking more subtle movements does become more challenging. The lower-resolution depth map also reduces the amount of data being beamed across USB, and decreases processing overhead too.
The other major difference in the final spec compared to the reference is the inclusion of a motorised tilt function in Kinect, which was never part of the original PrimeSense design. This is powered via a bespoke port on the new Xbox 360S, or via a bundled PSU for the older console.
The purpose of the tilt is fairly straightforward: it allows for a more flexible placement of the camera, allowing it to fit more comfortably in more environments. During gameplay it's never been observed to move dynamically, and it is understood that skeletal tracking functions within the 360 APIs are no longer active when the camera motor is in use.
Here's Play.com's data in full.

Xbox director of product management Aaron Greenberg has clarified his earlier statements on the future of Lionhead Studios' Milo & Kate, to indicate that the game is merely not due for release this year.
"Project Milo absolutely continues in development at Lionhead Studios, it is just not a product we plan to bring to market this holiday," said Greenberg on Twitter.
Speaking on Australian television, Greenberg was previously asked why Milo and Kate was not featured at E3 2010, despite being so prominent at E3 2009.
"The Milo Project is something that Lionhead Studios in their labs had developed. Last year we unveiled the Project Natal technology, we showed a bunch of technology demos as part of that," said Greenberg at the time.
"And obviously [Milo] is a technology demo that continues to exist, but right now it’s not a game that we’re planning to bring to market," he added.
Clarification that the concept will still result in a retail product has also come from Lionhead Studios' Sam Van Tilburgh. As reported by website Joystiq, Van Tilburgh Twittered a imagine of the project's development team.
Although the exact status of the project remains unclear, Van Tilburgh indicated that, "There's about 50 people on the 'Project Milo Team'".

June 30th, 2010, 17:10 Posted By: wraggster
Sega's Yosuke Okunari, producer of the upcoming XBLA and PSN Dreamcast re-releases, has explained the company's Sega Saturn snub.
In an interview with Impress Watch, the Sega man explained the decision to skip offering downloadable Saturn games was down to the global failure of console.
"The Genesis and Dreamcast are well known, but Saturn is unknown. During that period, PlayStation and Nintendo 64 were a success overseas, but to be honest Saturn was not a success. Because of this, we decided on Dreamcast," he said.
However, referencing the PlayStation 2 port of Nights, Okunari argued that Sega hasn't ignored the Saturn.
"It's not that we're ignoring Saturn I think you can see this, considering that we ported Nights Into Dreams and other titles," he said.
There may be some hope for Saturn fanatics, as Okunari stated that Sega are still considering ports of Saturn games and invited readers to share their requests.
"What we announced this time is a project where we will have consecutive releases of titles that were debuted on Dreamcast. Separate from this, we're of course thinking about ports of Saturn games. It's the same as how Sega Ages and Virtual Console were separate existences. It's not that we have no intention of porting Saturn titles, so please share your requests."
Although the Saturn wasn't a success, it gained popularity amongst 2D fighting game fanatics and was home to a number of memorable new Sega games such as the Panzer Dragoon series.

June 30th, 2010, 17:08 Posted By: wraggster
Speaking at the GameHorizon Conference today, head of Microsoft Game Studios Peter Molyneux has reportedly unveiled that Fable III will be distributed in an episodic format as well as through retail.
That's according to those on the show floor, such as GamesBrief's Nicholas Lovell, who claimed on Twitter: "Fable III will be episodic. First hour will be free, will be the demo and end on a cliffhanger. Users can buy next episode or full game."
Lovell also suggested that Molyneux criticised the current demo format popular with many studios and publishers on the likes of Xbox Live.
Addressing the audience at the opening of the second day of the Gateshead event, Molyneux went on to defen Milo, which was suggested to be a tech demo only yesterday, before Microsoft moved to quash the rumours.
Claiming that while he empathised with Microsoft's reservations about the Kinect project’s potential with the public, Molyneux insisted he was confident that the title has the quality and technical capability to impress audiences.

A U.S. design patent received by Microsoft today for a "dual display device" looks like a mere remnant of the days when the company's Courier project was still a going concern. However, the fact that Microsoft filed for a design patent earlier this year shows that the company was serious, at one point, about the possibility of bringing Courier to market as a product in its own right -- before killing it off.
Based on the illustrations, the design patent is pretty clearly for the Courier device, the "secret tablet" from Microsoft that was revealed by Gizmodo last year and held up as a potential rival to Apple's iPad. In April, Microsoft confirmed and canceled the Courier project in one fell swoop but noted that the underlying technologies would still be "evaluated for use in future Microsoft offerings."
In an interview with TechFlash in May, outgoing Microsoft Entertainment & Devices President Robbie Bach said Courier was never a "device," instead calling it a project and an incubation leading to innovations that could find their way into other Microsoft products.
The design patent was filed on Jan. 19. These types of patents, covering a product's ornamental design, are good for 14 years, so Microsoft has a bit of time if it decides to revive the Courier concept.
Another clue from the filing provides further evidence of how serious the company was about the project, showing that the company went so far as to hire an outside design firm to work on the Courier.
In addition to Microsoft's Jonathan Harris, the inventors named in the patent filing are Scott Wilson and Stephen Christopher of the Chicago design firm Minimal, whose website lists "Multiple Confidential Programs" for Xbox and Microsoft among its projects currently in progress --- including "ongoing cross-divisional collaborations on future mobile devices, PC hardware, gaming systems and experiences."
Apart from Courier, another of those confidential Microsoft design projects was apparently the new Xbox 360. Wilson has been credited publicly for his design work on the slimmed-down Microsoft game console .

Lionhead has admitted to Eurogamer that the implementation of online co-operative multiplayer in Fable II "was rubbish", but promised that Fable III's will be vastly improved.
Scripter Ted Timmins, our guide for a hands-on with the game at E3, said: "We do admit, the co-op in Fable II was rubbish. We'd be restricted to being within 10 yards of each other, I'd have to be your henchman."
In the new game, you will be able to bring your own hero character with its own stats, interface, individually morphed weapons and dog into a friends' game, Timmins explained.
You will also be able to wander freely anywhere within the same region, and get up to different things; one of you might be indulging in conversation and trading in town while the other fights and quests in the wild.
Furthermore, some of the possible interactions with NPCs will be available between players online - including marriage.
"If I'm playing with my girlfriend, I can get married to my girlfriend in the game," Timmins said. "Have a wedding, get down on one knee like in real life.
"When you actually get married in the game, you have a shared back account. So one day you might turn your game on thinking yeah, I've got 1000 gold, I can have that weapon that I wanted, you run over, you press A, you've got no money. The reason is, you go to your house, you've got pink wallpaper and a new bed."
Rest assured, Timmins also showed us a meaty non-marital slice of Fable III at E3, including the overhauled combat, the new continent of Aurora, the "touch" system of NPC interactions, the Sanctuary - a 3D room you can warp to at any time that acts as a menu and home - and more. Only the side of the game that will see you become the ruler of Albion remains under wraps.
Fable III is due out for both Xbox 360 and PC on 26th October this year.

June 28th, 2010, 23:41 Posted By: wraggster
Bungie thought about creating Halo 4 before settling on prequel Halo: Reach, community directory Brian Jarrard has revealed.
Series hero Master Chief would have woken up from his cryo-sleep in the game, had it happened.
"Even before the idea to build a game based around Reach came about, a lot of other concepts were explored, up to and including a proper Halo 4, where Master Chief was going to wake up from cryo-sleep and we were going to tell that story," Jarrard told MTV Multiplayer.
Although Reach, set to be the last Bungie-developed Halo, is shaping up to be one of 2010's biggest games, some fans are disappointed that Bungie decided to create a prequel to the first Halo rather than continuing Master Chief's story.
"It just wasn't as interesting to the team to just pick up where that left off and all the baggage that came with it," Jarrard explained.
"I think it was a little bit liberating. Hearing the guys talk about working through the trilogy and the obligation of keeping the themes moving forward and tying them up systematically. And ODST was also kinda nice 'cause they could do something different, something separate, and it's totally self-contained.
"I definitely think that, for Reach, a lot of the same attitude carried over. We don't want to open up a whole bunch of doors that we're not going to close. By the end of this, it's all going to come to a nice, neat finish, and if people want to then go play the Halo trilogy, I think they'll have a better understanding of what's going on, but it's not required at all."
There's been loads of speculation that Master Chief turns up at some point in Halo: Reach, but according to MTV Multiplayer, Jarrard confirmed that the faceless space marine "is nowhere in this game".
Master Chief fans shouldn't be too worried, though. Reach is shaping up nicely. Game's out on the Xbox 360 on 14th September.

Whether you play Monster Hunter Frontier Online on a PC or an Xbox 360 you connect to the same server. Going multiplatform gave the virtual world a noticeable bump in the number of online monster hunters.
On June 27, Monster Hunter Frontier Online hit a new milestone. Famitsu reports Monster Hunter Frontier Online had over 70,000 simultaneous players. The number pales in comparison to, say, World of Warcraft, but the Xbox 360 is having an effect on the game. 38,333 people were playing the established PC version and 34,197 people logged on via the Xbox 360 beta.
The Xbox 360 version launched three days prior on June 24.

Lionhead's Peter Molyneux has said that he loves the idea of a version of his PC god game Black & White for Xbox 360 motion controller Kinect, but it's unlikely he'll have time.
The two Black & White games featured a gesture interface that allowed you to cast spells, interact with your giant creature and manage your worshippers' settlements, so the series is an obvious fit for Microsoft's camera device, he reasoned.
"The original Black & White - with the hand, reaching in and touching and stroking, you can really factor that with Kinect, and it could be really super cool," Molyneux mused to UGO (thanks, VG247).
"It's purely me just thinking about it, and thinking about what Black & White means. I love the idea of that connection the hand gave you into the world, the feeling of power, the feeling of nuturing."
But although he said "maybe it is something I should revisit," Molyneux confessed that there was too much on his plate to entertain the idea right now.
"The trouble with being a designer now is that there are way too many ideas than there is time to develop those ideas," he said.
"I would love to do something like a Black & White again. I would love to do a Fable 4. I would love to carry on doing Milo, but there is only a certain amount of resources and a certain amount of time."

It was named early on as one of the big sales hopes of 2010, but Take Two’s BioShock 2 has not met the expectations placed upon it by the publisher, chief executive Ben Feder has admitted.
“We’re in an entertainment business. The surprise factor is always going to be there. Sometimes they work for you and sometimes they work against you,” Feder told VentureBeat.
“We are in the business of creating huge franchises and launching hits. Even BioShock 2 is profitable for the company and is a great success. The franchise is viable and has a lasting impact on consumers. It was ultimately successful, but not hugely successful. We are also looking forward to other hits coming this year.”
When pressed the exec admitted that, in his eyes, the lower than expected sales were most likely down to the influx of triple-A titles from rivals hitting the High Street at the same time in February of this year.
“Your competitive set is always important,” he conceded.
“One thing we saw with Red Dead Redemption was that there wasn’t much room in the market for anything but Red Dead. It works in a good way and a bad way. We sucked the oxygen out of the room with Red Dead. We haven’t seen NPD data yet, but I suspect it will show Red Dead had pretty good market share.”
