BioShock Infinite will be released for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 19 in Europe, developer Irrational Games has confirmed.
Ken Levine, president and creative director, said: "After BioShock, we had a vision for a followup that dwarfed the original in scope and ambition. BioShock Infinite has been our sole focus for the last four years, and we can't wait for fans to get their hands on it.
In January, the studio announced 1999 Mode, which more strictly rations health, weaponry and powers, and requires that players pick specialisations and stick with them for the duration. It was designed in response to a poll on the studio's website.
A post on the PlayStation Blog to announce the release date reveals that the PlayStation 3 version will support the Move controller; further details are promised soon.

French retailer Fnac has published an ad on its website claiming that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be released on November 12th2012.
The ad has long since vanished, but not before it was snapped by Gamepur.
The November 12th date could, of course, be nothing other than an educated guess. Note, too, that the 12th is a Monday – Call of Duty’s have for some time had worldwide releases on a Tuesday to correspond with the normal US weekly release schedule.
Either way, the date is bound to be at least roughly accurate. Modern Warfare 3 (November 8th), Black Ops (November 9th), Modern warfare 2 (November 10th), World at War (November 11th), Modern Warfare (November 7th) and Call of Duty 3 (November 7th) have all stuck to the same pattern.
The likeliest candidates for the game’s actual release are either November 6th or November 13th.
The bigger question is the name of the game.
It’s not the first time that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has been tipped. But it would represent a slight deviation from the norm, with the series historically alternating between Modern Warfare releases from Infinity Ward every two years and individually titled Treyarch-developed titles in each year in between.
Black Ops was a huge commercial success, however, and Activision would most likely welcome a second successful COD IP to run alongside Modern Warfare.

Trials Evolution, the next installment in the addictive time-trial franchise from developer RedLynx, may be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade on April 18, if an Xbox Live Marketplace listing is to be believed.
Discovered by the folks at Eurogamer, the listing for Trials Evolution (now pulled, but captured above) originally listed the April release before disintegrating into nothingness -- like our chances of reaching the top of theTrials HD leaderboards. As the leaked date falls on a Wednesday, it would follow Microsoft's typical release schedule for the Xbox Live Arcade.
Joystiq has contacted Ubisoft, parent company of the Finnish developer, to find out if they're ready to spill the beans on a release date. We just can't wait to scream at our televisions for fudging up our balance ... again and again.

Troubled retailer GAME could lose up to £2.5 million in profits by not selling EA's forthcoming sci-fi RPG Mass Effect 3.
That's according to one analyst, who said that lost sales and compensation to those that pre-ordered the game will add to the retailer's woes in a year of struggle on the High Street.
"Working on the assumption that a decent triple A title sells 0.8m-1m titles in the first few weeks of release in the UK and assuming Game has around 20% share, we calculate that by not stocking Mass Effect 3, Game is potentially missing out on around £6m-£7m of revenues in the UK given the title will retail for £39.99," said Mark Photiades of Singer Capital Markets, reports The Guardian.
"With new software margins of around 24 per cent this could result in £1.5m-£2m of lost gross profit in the current year. It is also worth noting that margins will suffer as a result of the reward card points being offered in compensation. We estimate this could amount to another £0.3m of forgone gross profit as typically pre-orders account for around 30% of initial sales. So in total there could be £2m-£2.5m of lost UK profit in a year where we are already forecasting losses of £8m."
It emerged this week that GAME would not be stocking any of Electronic Arts' games in March following a dispute over credit. GAME is offering those that pre-ordered the highly anticipated title refunds and £5 worth of reward card points to spend in store.
John Stevenson of Peel Hunt was more positive about the retailer, believing that the disposal of International and some UK stores will help the retailer in the longer term.
"Given recent events, further speculation and the loss of key titles will clearly not help customer confidence, future pre-order levels or Game's overall negotiations with banks, suppliers and wider stakeholders," stated Stevenson.
"That aside, the group is continuing to develop a strategic plan, which we believe will likely result in the disposal of international operations and some UK store closures. The potential for new major console releases will be a significant source of future revenue and cash generation for the group, which will be critical to underpinning any recovery plan."

Persona 4 Arena, Atlus and Arc System Works' confrontational extension of the Persona universe, was announced two weeks ago with a rather vague "summer" release window for its North American launch on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Apparently that meant "the tail end of summer," as Atlus has specified a slightly more specific August, 2012 window on the PlayStation Blog.
When it does launch, the game will include the prerequisite Online mode, as well as a console-only Story mode, which Atlus is attempting to populate with the English voice actors used in Persona 3 and Persona 4. In situations where English actors aren't available, we always recommend using Scottish or Welsh actors as a substitute. Their geological proximity to England often gives them a familiarity with local dialects that can be useful when replicating an accent.
... Oh, English.

Despite Mass Effect 3's impressive mastery of the atmosphere, it still can't quite handle clouds. EA is "aware of an issue" that prevents Mass Effect 2 save files that either exist in the cloud, or were transferred to a new 360 through the cloud, from being imported into ME3.
EA's help guide for the problem makes no mention of plans to implement such functionality, but it does offer solutions, provided you still have access to the 360 that birthed your ME2 save. If your ME2 save exists in the cloud and you're playing from its original console, simply move it back to your hard drive and it should import fine.
If it exists on a new console and was transferred through the cloud, it'll need to be moved back to its original 360, and then re-transferred to the new system using a memory card or USB thumb drive. If you no longer have access to that original 360, it looks like you're going to be spending some time on the character creation screen. But hey, don't feel guilty, all right? Shepard would have wanted you to love again.

Attention, brothers and sisters of the Great White North: if you're in the market for a Kinect sensor, you probably want to pick it up from Future Shop. The retailer is tossing in a free copy of Mass Effect 3.
All you have to do is add both the Kinect sensor and Mass Effect 3 to your cart, and when you check out the discount will be applied -- or, if you're one of those people who still shops for things in stores, you can break out the snow mobile and head to your local brick-and-mortar.

When it comes to futuristic arena shooters, two names quickly come to mind:Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena. Nexuiz borrows liberally from both, employing exotic arenas and out-of-this-world weaponry. In fact, Nexuiz only does one thing to expand upon the formulae set down by the genre's heavy-hitters. The question is whether that's enough to set Nexuiz apart.

Swizzy released a new version of his GUI for xeBuild.
What's new/fixed:
- Fixed: You can now choose to change your CFLDV and use the nofcrt.bin check patch at the same time... (there was a typo previously)
- Added: Argument/Parameter editor to keep such errors as this from happening again (NOTE: Limited to advanced mode to keep noobs away from killing consoles by editing without knowing what they're doing!)
- Fixed: When building multipile images without exiting the program you'll no longer get multipile entries of "-o cfldv=xx" on the command sent to xebuild...
- Added: Option to extract vital files (kv.bin, smc.bin and smc_config.bin), this will extract these files instead of copying your nand to the data directory (only available when making xeBuild images)
** NOTE: This feature is limited to advanced mode and you will need to manually remap the resulting nand! it'll first check for previously extracted files before doing this (it won't overwrite already existing files), and upon completion it'll delete them...**
** NOTE: At this time i'm unable to extract smc_config.bin, so for now it'll only check if it exists (use 360 flash dump tool to extract it!) **
- Changed: The generate button is now disabled upon clicking it, thus not allowing you to run 2 operations at the same time, if you forgot to change something please WAIT!! (or you'll have a mixed/messy log and the app may crash when it's complete...)
- Changed: The dashfiles check is now done first thing after you've pressed the generate button, thus not creating a debuglog which is useless
- Changed: Reverted back to Logic-Sunrise as download server and default build version is now 14699
- Updated: Now using Dashlaunch 2.32

We have released the MATRIX TRIDENT (PSI) installation and instruction manual. Also available is the diagram to use the MATRIX TRIDENT with any other glitch device available on the market.
You can get both from our DOWNLOAD section. (EDIT: Fixed the installation manual download link, sorry about that guys ! :-) )
We are completing also a software to enable the easy management of bad blocks when dumping the NAND and rewriting it to the MATRIX TRIDENT. This software will handle all the work in case your NAND has bad blocks tht need to be reallocated.
We also would like to inform everyone that the tests to restore glitch features to SLIM and FAT consoles that have been updated with the 14717/14719 update are proceeding at fast peace.
More tests are required to ensure that every bug has been ironed out, but we will have soon good news for owners of Glitch devices.

Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions pirated
BioWare’s blockbuster RPG Mass Effect 3 has been leaked online via numerous torrent sites just days before release.
Despite not yet being available to buy, the game has already appeared on the internet allowing pirates to illegally download the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. A PC version has also been leaked, although a crack is required to play it.
Mass Effect 3 is the latest in a line of games to be pirated ahead of release, with titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops made available to illegally download before launch, whilst an unfinished version of Crysis 2 also reportedly made its way onto torrent websites pre-release.

Lionhead has announced Fable Heroes, a fourplayer hack-and-slasher for Xbox Live Arcade.
Revealed at Microsoft's Spring Showcase in San Francisco last week, Fable Heroes has been in development since early last year and is the product of Lionhead's annual Creative Day, which we featured back in E228.
Players cooperate and compete to earn coins, which level up their characters and can be used to unlock content in upcoming Kinect-powered 360 exclusive Fable: The Journey.

PlayGround Games is developing the next instalment of Microsoft's racing series with founding developer Turn 10, with a release planned for autumn 2012.
Forza Horizon was revealed through a teaser trailer at Microsoft's Spring Showcase in San Francisco last week that emphasised an open road cutting through desert scrub and partying people, though no other details are yet clear to confirm rumours from last spring that it's to be an open-world racer.
The Leamington Spa-based studio was founded by ex-Codemasters developers who have worked on the Colin McRae,Dirt, Grid and Toca series and is led by Gavin Raeburn.
"We were looking for a partner who wanted to push our vision of pushing car lovers to games and gamers to cars, and when I say partner, I mean partner," Turn 10 creative director Dan Greenawalt told us. "We wanted to embrace this vision but for them to come up with their own way of executing it so we can expand the house, not just duplicate them."
PlayGround Games has been heavily staffing up over the past year, taking on many experienced racing developers from the closures of Bizarre Creations, Black Rock and cutbacks at Slightly Mad.
"It's a tale of triumph and tragedy at the same time," Greenawalt said. "It was able to grow because of some of the declines in the racing development community in the UK in particular. I'm asked often whether racing is coming under decline - honestly, if you look at Need For Speed or Gran Turismo racing's obviously not in decline. There is innovation, there are great products, they're selling. But across the industry there's a lot of this - the big franchises are getting bigger and the mid tiers are having trouble and the studios are cutting back.
"What was exciting for is is that PlayGround Games have this tremendous heritage, but they were also able to staff up with great talent."

March 5th, 2012, 23:46 Posted By: wraggster
343 Industries showed off the first footage of Halo 4 and revealed its creative strategy for the game at Microsoft's Spring Showcase in San Francisco last week.
Creative director Josh Holmes said the game is "the beginning of an epic new sci-fi saga that will define the next decade for Halo … We don’t want to imitate what’s gone before. We need to find our own voice and give ourselves the freedom to take chances and push things forward. In some ways you can see Halo 4 as a bit of a reboot."
It will run on an updated version of the engine that powered previous games in the series. "We are overhauling the engine top to bottom to provide significant technological advances in service of the experience we’re trying to create," Holmes said. It will also feature updated vehicles, weapons, enemies and audio, and the return of the Battle Rifle.
Set directly after the events of 2007's Halo 3, the game will have the Master Chief facing a new, "ancient, very dark" threat. It will feature a greater concentration on characterising John-117, the man in the Spartan-IV armour, and a "deeper, more emotional, impactful story, and a darker, more sophisticated theme," according to Holmes.
343 intends, according to Holmes, to "redefine whatHalo multiplayer is and make it something that’s indisputably Haloat its core but is evolved in important and innovative ways ... Our design goal is to dramatically reinvent the multiplayer experience - both the core element and surrounding modes."
The only footage 343 showed of Halo 4 was of the Slayer multiplayer mode over two maps. It revealed faster play, smoother animation and a slightly cleaner, more coherent visual style. As inReach, armour will be customisable, both aesthetically and with a set of abilities that will mark an evolution of Reach's Armor Abilities performance-enhancing choices. 343 won't yet reveal how.
When we asked franchise director Frank O'Connor why multiplayer was the focus of last week's demo, he said, "Our community was really curious about multiplayer in a way I hadn’t seen before. I think some of that is that they want something new and new ways to play. Not just Call Of Duty and Reach and Battlefield and all that, but I think people are just looking for something new online and with their friends.
"I think we’re going to be able to achieve that somewhat with some of the stuff we haven’t talked about yet. We’re not trying to change the world and reinvent the wheel but we’re going to do something appropriate to Halo and its fiction that will be really compelling social experience."
Look out for a full preview in our next issue, out April 11.

Like the Nintendo Wii before it, Microsoft's Kinect has been braving the storm of new peripheral adolescence, awkwardly shuffling users through jump, wave, lean and jiggling gameplay, typically at a leisurely pace. Sure it's had its moments on the dance floor, but aside from being a good listener, the spatially aware sensor hasn't exactly redefined core gaming. Almost a year and half after its launch, however, the often hacked device is taking another crack at reaching the hardcore. We dropped in on Xbox's spring showcase this weekend to find out how that effort is going -- see what we found after the break.

The upcoming DLC characters for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions of Street Fighter X Tekken are included on the disc, Capcom has confirmed to MCV.
However, the publisher has responded to accusations of foul playby saying that the move was necessary to ensure that all players, both those who have chosen to buy the DLC and those who have not, are able to play online without technical hiccup.
“The character information and files were intentionally included on retail versions of the PS3 and Xbox 360 game to save hard drive space and to ensure for a smooth transition when the DLC is available, allowing players who choose not to purchase the content the ability to play against players that did,†a Capcom spokesperson told MCV.
“More specifics regarding pricing, dates and other additional exciting DLC plans for Street Fighter X Tekken will be shared at a later date. As a reminder, the retail version of the game will be the only disc-based version consumers will need to own and all future upgrades will come from post-launch DLC.â€
What the statement does not address, of course, is the ethical conundrum of asking players to purchase content that they in effect already own but have been prevented from accessing.
However, it must also be pointed out that Capcom came in for a bit of stick for choosing to upgrade previous release Street Fighter IV via a brand new disc-based release. The measures put in place with Street Fighter X Tekken do at least ensure that this will not be the case again.

Owners of Forza Motorsport 4 will finally be able to get behind the wheels of a number of Porsche’s most famous vehicles in May.
That’s because Microsoft and EA have finally ironed out the differences which previously lead to EA putting a halt to any possible inclusion of the license in the game.
“This kills me,†Turn 10’s creative director Dan Greenawalt said back in August. “In Forza 3, we were able to feature more than 35 different Porsche models by offering to collaborate with EA. For Forza 4, we were looking forward to adding even more Porsche cars. In the end, however, EA couldn’t see their way towards collaborating again.
“We’ve asked our contacts at EA to reconsider their position frequently and regularly over the last 18 months. We also reached out to various influential people in gaming to lobby on our behalf, and on your behalf, but that was to no avail.
“While we respect EA’s need to run their business as they see fit, we’ve regularly collaborated in the past and hope we can find our way back to that approach.
Now that a deal has been ironed out a DLC pack will be released for the game in May that includes 30 Porsche vehicles – 23 that have previously featured in Forza 3 and seven brand new models.
Ten new achievements worth 250 gamer points are included as part of the package.

Capcom announced this morning that Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon Citywill include a multiplayer mode entitled "Nemesis Mode," exclusively for Xbox 360. Now, don't go thinkin' this DLC is free or something crazy like that. Nemesis Mode will be available at launch, on March 20, for 320 Microsoft Points ($4).
Nemesis Mode has the USS verses the Spec Ops in an eight-man battle with someone able to control a Nemesis. While one team tracks down a control unit, the other can "give the Nemesis orders to destroy the opposition." As with all things "exclusive," we don't know how long it'll take before this multiplayer mode infects other platforms, but we're sure not even Capcom can contain Nemesis.

Kinect Star Wars looks like it'll make a mockery of the Star Wars universe AND give your sister another reason to commandeer your Kinect all in one shot.
The new video below shows a girl looking stupid while pretending to play the pod racing section of the game from Episode 1. Then you see some shanky-looking Lightsaber action before showing the facepalm-inducing dancing bit. It's almost hard to believe this is real. It is.
Kinect Star Wars and the limited edition 'R2-D2' Xbox 360 will release in the UK on April 3 for £39.99 and £349.99 respectively.

2K Czech creating animations for general gameplay and cut scenes, claims source
Mafia II developer 2K Czech is collaborating with Rockstar on the development of Grand Theft Auto V, according to a report.
A source speaking to VG247 said that the Czech studio was creating animations for in-game cut scenes and general gameplay.
2K declined to comment on the rumours.
The source also claimed that the collaboration was part of Take Two’s plan to make the Mafia games into a “major franchiseâ€, with development on Mafia III currently underway.
No details were given on the project, although 2K were allegedly in attendance at the rumoured Xbox next-gen console summit “Durango†in London.

There's a major difference between the Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter X Tekken and its PS3 twin, it turns out. According to the manual included with both versions, the game's tag team modes allow you and a local friend to sign on to the same console and fight against two other people online; your buddy presses start at the character select screen and off you go. In actuality, this functionality only exists in the PS3 version of the game.
The issue has been acknowledged by Christian Svensson at Capcom, who stated that Capcom has no plans to patch the feature in, and that its inclusion in the manual was a mistake. "The reason for this difference is because of the architecture differences between [Xbox Live] gamertags and PSN IDs. I'm not sure of the technical details, but basically it amounts to: Sony made it so you can mix and match online and offline, and Microsoft made it so you can't."
That sounded like a reasonable explanation, until we remembered that the 360 version of Mortal Kombat does that exact thing, allowing two local players to take part in tag-team battles online. If it's possible for NetherRealm Studios to include the feature in Mortal Kombat -- the MK studio's first release under the NetherRealm banner -- its exclusion from Capcom's brand-new flagship fighter seems strange at the very least.

Medal of Honor Warfighter is apparently EA's big holiday shooter this year, with a leaked European trailer indicating an October 23 launch date. The sequel to 2010's Medal of Honor is also being handled by EA's Danger Close studio, though DICE isn't picking up the multiplayer slack this time around. As October 23 is a Tuesday, it looks like that will also account for a US release date, but we've reached out to EA for clarification all the same.
Update: EA released the US trailer as well now, which shows October 23 as the release date too. So there's that!

Major Nelson has posted the schedule for upcoming Xbox Live content, replete with plenty of new releases and deals. We knew most of the XBLA release dates already, including March 7 for I Am Alive and March 14 for Shoot Many Robots. What we didn't know was the March 14 release of Defenders of Ardania, a fantasy tower defense game we first heard about over a year ago.
Beyond XBLA, this week's Deal of the Week sees Borderlands DLC heavily discounted, in most cases by 50 percent. Next week's deal will slash prices on several dungeon crawlers, including Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale, The Baconing, Torchlight, and Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, all of which will be 50 percent off.
Finally, a Dead or Alive 5 demo is slated for March 19, presumably the one of the same demos included with Ninja Gaiden 3 (which is totally coming out this month, lest you forgot). Head over to Major Nelson for the full content schedule.

Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 will explode at retail this summer, supported by the publisher’s biggest UK campaign to date.
Marketing efforts will be centred around the release of the Xbox 360 and PS3 SKUs on May 18th, targeting both fans of the shooter series and a wider audience of action gamers.
Highlights of the campaign will include prominent TV spots during the Champions’ League finals and other mainstream programming, as well as a national outdoor campaign. The latter will see billboards and roadside bus shelter posters spread across the UK for two weeks after the game’s release.
“Max Payne 3 will be our biggest and boldest marketing effort thus far and we’ve looked to improve across all areas on what we did for Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire,†a Rockstar spokesperson told MCV.
“A massive media investment has already started, but the main launch thrust will coincide with Easter all the way through to beyond the PC release on June 1st.â€
Retail is already playing its part, as Rockstar has worked closely with partners on its timed Special Edition. This new initiative encourages pre-orders by only making the premium SKU and its extras available until April 2nd.
“It’s bound to be a brilliant game and, as a Rockstar title, it has a fantastic heritage to draw on, and will hopefully follow in the tradition of L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption,†said HMV senior games buyer Jason Brooks.
“It’s a sequel that’s been nearly nine years in the making, so you can understand the anticipation building around it.â€
Rockstar’s rep added: “We have very high expectations. The response from retail has been overwhelmingly positive and for that we are incredibly grateful for their trust and belief in us and Max Payne 3.â€

Xbox 360 owners can now access music video application Vevo in the UK, US, Canada and Ireland.
The service – which goes live today – lets users watch more than 45,000 music videos by 11,000 artists, from Kelly Clarkson to Tinie Tempah. They can also browse videos using Kinect’s voice recognition technology.
The Vevo app is part of Microsoft’s Xbox Live entertainment push, which has already seen other dashboard apps appear on the online platform, such as YouTube, Blinkbox and MSN.
Vevo joins other Xbox Live music apps such as Zune and Muzu.TV.
Users will require an Xbox Live Gold subscription to use Vevo. Microsoft currently charges an annual fee of £39.99 for this service.

Some instances of Commander Shepard are embarking on Mass Effect 3's climactic campaign with some alterations. The galaxy's most important (and most imported) face is not being properly preserved in the transfer between some games of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 (ours included), prompting BioWare to work on a correction.
According to BioWare's Community Coordinator, Chris Priestly, "The issue is likely in how faces were detected when imported from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2, and we're working on the best way to correct it for affected players." In our experience, a wonky import process only messes with facial data, and none of Shepard's recorded actions throughout the previous games.
If you're driven mad by inconsistent canon -- or can't bear the thought of Shepard being vain enough to get some touch-ups before his last stand -- BioWare is pointing you to a set of user-made tools for the PC version. As far as we know, this is the only time we'll ever recommend DIY facial surgery.

Halo 4 runs at a native 720p resolution, developer 343 Industries has confirmed.Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor took to forum NeoGAF to answer questions about the upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive. The Halo series has, since Halo 3 on Xbox 360, come in for a certain amount of stick for outputting in below-HD resolutions. And following this week's release of snippets of Halo 4 gameplay footage, one fan wrote: "… looks like it's sub-HD still, hopefully no lower than Reach".O'Connor replied: "it is native 720p."Additional information: Halo 4 does not use any engine technology from last year's Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary."It shares no engine tech with Anniversary," O'Connor said. "Almost every single system, audio, rendering, lighting, you name it, has been either radically overhauled or rewritten from the ground up."At this point saying it's based on a previous version of the engine basically speaks to a few pieces of code."And finally, O'Connor addressed concern over the apparent inclusion of perks in Halo 4 - a first for the series."There aren't 'perks' in the game as being described here," he said. "And classic Halo is still there. But there are things we will be rolling out soon to put all of this discussion in a much better perspective and I suspect calm frayed nerves."Then: "We didn't mention them. That's why I put it in quotes. That term was coined by someone else to interpret stuff they saw in the UI. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and to be expected during announce fervour. And yes, it's partly our fault since we're rolling out more information about this stuff at a later time."For the record, this is what Halo 4 creative director Josh Holmes said at last week's Microsoft showcase event in San Francisco, attended by Eurogamer."You, as a player, have the ability to customise all aspects of your Spartan warrior - and not just cosmetically. For the first time in a Halo title, you can actually change gameplay-impacting components. This allows you to customise load outs and gives you gameplay enhancements that can be unlocked through the progression system."

Upcoming XBLA platformer Fez won the Seamus McNally Grand Prize, the top honour at last night's Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards at GDC in San Francisco.
Developer Phil Fish caused controversy earlier in the week when he told a Japanese developer that his nation's games "suck", but he is now in the headlines for all the right reasons, and has won $30,000 as a result. As our GDC diarist reports, he celebrated bycutting a rug to The Cure.
Thechineseroom's haunting adventure Dear Esther, which has sold 70,000 copies since its Steam release last month, won the award for Excellence In Visual Arts, while Beat Sneak Bandit took home the Best Mobile Game award. The Audience Award, the winner of which is selected by public vote, went to Frozen Synapse. - Student Showcast: Way

There are no plans for Halo 4 to receive a public beta, 343 Industries announced in a Q&A with franchise development director Frank O' Connor. He answered a slew of fan questions about Halo 4, revealing that it would be possible to play Grifball, that there would not be a color-blind mode (though considerations for that audience have been made in art decisions), and a few other tidbits. Check out the full factsheet here.
In related Halo 4 news, Microsoft recently won a legal battle against the bogus website Halo4beta.net, but as there won't be a Halo 4 beta we don't expect it to be put back into official use any time soon. Microsoft has also filed a complaint against Halo4beta.biz.

A fresh batch of Trine 2 DLC is dropping this summer, and it will include six new stages, a shiny new story and new skills. XBLA Fans picked up the news from Frozenbyte marketing director Mikael Haveri during a GDC 2012 panel this week. Haveri also said there would be a lot of puzzles based on light, water, low gravity and magnetic elements.
Frozenbyte's next project is an original IP set to launch at $15 for unannounced platforms, Haveri teased to XBLA Fans. At that price, we feel confident expecting a downloadable release.

During the Game Developer's Choice awards, DICE took home the prize of "Best Technology" for its Frostbite 2 engine. After accepting the award on behalf of his team, we asked DICE rendering architect Johan Andersson what the next generation of consoles would need to include for Frostbite 2 to work 'perfectly and as intended on high-end PCs.' To Andersson, the answer is "pretty easy to answer."
"There's two things: memory and processing power," he said. "We need lots and lots of processing power. The more you can cram into a machine, we'll take advantage of that." While 'more power' is the obvious answer -- both on the CPU and GPU side -- we wondered what wouldn't be 'enough' to work with.
"Two gigabytes would not be enough when it comes to RAM [random access memory]" Andersson said. "Four gigabytes would work. Eight gigabytes? Yeah. I think that would be perfect when it comes to memory." Recommended system specifications for Battlefield 3 call for 4GB of RAM.

Swizzy released a new version of his GUI for xeBuild.
What's new/fixed:
- Changed: The app no longer requires .net framework 3.5, it now only requies v2.0
- Fixed: When running a different build after running glitch type the app will no longer keep the "-o patchsmc" option as an argument to xebuild
- Fixed: More typo's where i've missed adding spaces between various xeBuild parameter options (this time it's with verbose output, maybe more... fixed properly this time!)
- Fixed: The app now properly copies custom smc to data directory...
- Fixed: Unpacking of sysmteupdates is now done properly again to the usb devices instead of to a folder with the letter of the drive...
- Added: Nandpro features, the GUI is now able to do various common NANDpro operations such as dumping your nand, writing a hacked image, writing a ECC image, it can also do file operations such as writing ECC to an existing Dump or remapping badblocks (NOTE: you have to write the blocks in HEX and you need to manually select what block to remap to where...)
** NOTE: When using 3.0a you'll get NO output if there is no device connected, Flash CPLD ONLY use 3.0a so don't bother trying to use Custom... Custom means it'll use "nandprocustom.exe" in files\nandpro\ otherwise it'll use the specified version (selected one) **
** NOTE: DO NOT remove nandpro20b.exe even if it's not used anywhere visuabaly (it's the version i use to do file operations meaning you will KILL the function if you remove this version, or replace it...) **
** NOTE: This is limited to advanced mode, it shouldn't be used by ppl that don't know what they're doing as there is no status updates along the way you won't know what's happening untill it's finnished **
- Added: If you put "smc_config.bin" or "kv.bin" next to the app they'll now be used instead of your full nand by default, making it easier for you to fix broken nands
- Updated: Now using the same Xell-Reloaded version for ECC and xeBuild (v0.991)
- Changed: If there is a log next to the gui it'll automatically assume you've already created a ECC and thus want to create a xeBuild image (ggboot/glitchboot) (NOTE: it looks for "xeBuild_GUI.log" and/or "xeBuild_GUI.txt")
- Changed: If you grab cpukey from keys.txt, fuse.txt or network it'll also assume you want to create a Glitch image (if ECC was previously selected)
- Fixed: If you are currently running a process (building an image) you cannot begin another one (the generate button is disabled untill it's finnished)
- Changed: There has been ALOT of changes in the source code, to improve the readability along with optimizing parts of the code to work a little faster and/or use a less ram, this isn't very important for most of you, but it's a big change
- Fixed: When there is an error the app will no longer assume it's an xeBuild error... (it will if xeBuild is used, otherwise it won't)
- Added: The output log now contains information aquired from your decrypted keyvault (serial, osig, mfr-date etc. all of the data it shows you when you click on check KV)
- Added: The output log also prints CB version (if possible)
- Changed: You can now choose to ONLY use extracted files (thus NOT using a previous nand dump) NOTE: This is NOT recomended and should ONLY be used if you have no other options...
- Updated: The app can now identify CB versions: 9230, 7375 and 1923 other versions may work fine aswell, but will NOT be identified automatically by the app...
- Updated: You can now build ECC type images for updated Slims (if they have CB 9230) you can also build ECC type images for Xenon... Thanks for releasing an updated build script nitram!

We are happy to finally release the Xenon RGH Hack. This is by no means meant to be used for an everyday RGH as its as bad if not worse than a Zephyr, however it does work and will be perfect for those who have a Xenon where they lost their DVD key or an unbanned key vault.
Here is the readme included with the release:
* Wiring
Generate your ecc image using the latest version of J-Runner and flash to your NAND (+w16 just like a regular RGH).
Program your TX CoolRunner (or whatever flavor RGH mod you are using) with the tx-xenon.xsvf or tx-xenon.jed file.
The Xenon has a capacitor on CPU_RST that was removed in later models. C7R112 (located near the xclamp under the CPU) must be de-soldered, and the CPU_RST wire from the TX CoolRunner(D) must be soldered to the left pad (non grounded pad).
A 47nf ( 0.047uf) capacitor needs to be added between PLL_BYPASS(+) and GND(-). (If you have a genuine TX CoolRunner REV B you can use the on-board by bridging the CAP jumper)
A 220-270pf capacitor should be added between CPU_RST(+) and GND(-) on the cpld. (If you have a genuine TX CoolRunner REV B this is already included in the design so not required)
An easy to follow picture guide can be found here: http://www.team-xecuter.com/coolrunn...phat_xenon.jpg
* Troubleshooting
Using a TX CoolRunner Rev B, and after applying various troubleshooting measures we have had glitches ranging from instant to 20 minutes.
The debug LED should flash on for less than a second and repeat every 5 seconds. If your LED stays on or does not come on at all, it is usually because of something being wrong with PLL_BYPASS. Try different values of capacitors and wires. If you have enabled the CAP on REV B of the TX CoolRunner, simply un-bridge it and try a 47nF cap instead as per the instructions above.
If it still has not glitched after several hours, try different values of capacitors on CPU_RST of your RGH mod. A longer wire / low-loss 50 ohm double shielded cable may also help with this.
To help increase boot times and stability (on all RGH installs not just Xenon) we recommend that you try Low-Loss Double Shielded 50 ohm cable. It's very cheap to use and quite effective – so a quick shout out to www.xconsoles.com who supplied a batch of high quality cable for our development team to use. It's less than 75 cents a foot – not bad.
NOTE: Remember when programming the TX CoolRunner that the Xbox power is NOT connected and that the switch is set to PRG before you connect the JTAG cable. If you connect the JTAG cable and it is set to NOR with the Xbox power connected, it can damage your NAND-X and/or CoolRunner. When you have finished programming, switch it back to NOR and then power on the Xbox.
* The Xenon Hack
Please note that this hack is not available on consoles updated to dashboards 14717 or 14719.
If you are seeing the debug led it means that the cpu is probably not crashing and the issue addressed by gligli/tiros has been fixed (This can of course be a false positive as sometimes the CPU could be crashing but the SMC restarts fine – we can never be 100% sure)
So far, this is really only useful for a one time cpu_key dump. There will undoubtedly be ways of optimizing this hack in the future and who knows, it may become a reliable glitch one day.
We would appreciate that you give as much feedback to our support forums as possible to help others achieve better results and to improve this method. For now we can leave this and go back to RGH2.0 for Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper and also of course, the Corona.
TX CoolRunner Support Forums: http://www.team-xecuter.com/forums/f...play.php?f=174
Enjoy!
Xbox 360 Xenon RGH Hack brought to you by the Xecuter RGH Development Team
www.team-xecuter.com
* Thanks
Thanks are extended to Tiros & Gligli, without your work none of this would have been possible.
A special thanks goes out to cOz – your work on Dashlaunch proved to be an invaluable contribution and we look froward to your next exciting project.
Greets: Team Jungle, Team FSD, Freeboot, Libxenon & RGLoader.
[/QUOTE]
From team-xecuter.com:
[QUOTE]
Here is the build.py for Xecuter's Xenon RGH Hack
J-Runner has no use for build.py as it doesn't use Python (or Nandpro) but figured there would be some guys out there who still use this method.
* Thanks to:
RF1911 for the XENON SMC
GliGli & Tiros for the original build.py
cOz for the Universal patch
To the Xecuter RGH team – you know who you are.
* Greets to:
#libxenon #FreeStyleDash #freeboot #rgloader #J-Runner #JungleFlasher #c4e
Also one of our forum members nitramb released a much better 14717/14719 python script than the one released by those Italian guys. Again, none of this is required for the J-Runner app.
Remember, when running to be first you should instead think about walking to be best

If you have the 14717/14719 dash update on your slim and you were not able to dump your CPU KEY – you can now use the new J-Runner is released which includes the latest patches for 14719. The new build is 264 – so update now!
Also includes latest Dashboard with cOz's fakelive patch and the latest xebuild.
We wanted to wait on releasing this as it can easily be patched if you don't already have your CPU Key – we have been warning you for the last couple of weeks to get it NOW before it is blocked.
Thanks to some other guys who carelessly released the info without a thought to how it would affect the scene – many users may never have the chance to glitch their box if they weren't able to read this info first as it was rushed out with no correct preparation. We were hoping to release at the same time as the RGH2.0 for Phats but that will now have to wait. (Still under heavy testing to make it as reliable as possible – its a much different install, unlike the slim where the process is the same as before)
Anyway, grab it asap and get your CPU Key NOW ! If you don't get your CPU KEY before this is patched then you may never be able to glitch your Xbox.
Once you have your CPU Key – it doesn't matter how many times it's patched in the future – it should work just fine.
On a side note, if you want to improve your boot times you can use Hi-Grade 50ohm Double Shielded Low-Loss Cable. When used with the SLIM POST QSB we found some testers console times and stability were increased dramatically. At only $1-$2 a foot, it's worth giving a try. We also suggest you try switching to phat <> slim on your CoolRunner to see if your times and stability are improved. Some Phats like being switched to Slim and vice-verse, every console is different so these tips should help you find your sweet spot. Most slims should expect to boot within 1-4 glitches (5-20 seconds).

Microsoft is set to double the number of Achievement points available in Xbox Live Arcade games, according to reports.
A source told Xbox 360 Achievements that all games released on the service from June 1 onwards will offer a maximum of 30 achievements and a total of 400 Gamerscore, up from 20 and 200 respectively.
Under the current rules, developers can release a maximum of three DLC packs, each containing up to five achievements worth a total of 50 points, each quarter. When the new rules come in, the DLC limit will rise to four, with a maximum of eight achievements worth 100 Gamerscore.
It's a sensible move given that the Achievements system has remained broadly static while the size and scope of XBLA games has improved dramatically since launch. As prices on the service have risen, it seems appropriate that the size of the rewards on offer should increase as well.
Developers of games released in May, before the new terms come into effect, will be given a choice of which system to use, the source claimed.

Electronic Arts has moved to improve security on FIFA 12'sUltimate Team online game, which has been linked to phishing scams and the hacking of Xbox Live accounts.
EA has staunchly denied that lax Ultimate Team security is behind the spate of Xbox Live account thefts; both it, and Microsoft, attribute it to players falling victim of phishing scams, which the update, due this week for Xbox 360 and PS3, seeks to address.
Players will now only be able to send trade offers to members of their friends lists, and will have to set up a security question when they log in after the update is applied. In the event that someone tries to access an Ultimate Team account from a console that has not been used before, they will be required to answer the security question.
"We're committed to doing everything we can in our game to help keep you safe from phishers and scammers, and our March game update is a key part of that commitment," EA said in a statement. "While these measures make life much more difficult for those attempting to compromise others' accounts, it's still vitally important that you check your information."
Users whose Xbox Live accounts were compromised have pointed the finger at Ultimate Team, because Microsoft Points bought with their stored credit card data were typically spent on in-game virtual goods.
The update, due tomorrow on Xbox 360 and on Wednesday on PS3, also fixes bugs including one long-standing issue causing disconnections at the end of online matches.

March 12th, 2012, 22:02 Posted By: wraggster
The numbers don't add up for solid state media on home consoles, says Rob Fahey
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]E&D Emerging Markets
www.microsoft.com/uk/games
Trade newspaper MCV reported this morning that Microsoft is planning to drop optical disc media from the next generation Xbox, replacing it instead with a removable solid state format. The reaction online was instantaneous - a strong backlash against the idea of an all-digital console, lamenting the plight of those without superb broadband and fretting over the inevitable price hikes brought on by the end of second-hand and retailer discounting.
Spot the disconnect. What MCV reported is the end of optical media in the Xbox; what the world heard, apparently, is the end of physical retail. They're not the same thing, as anyone who's bought a PlayStation Vita - and then successfully walked into a shop and bought a game on a solid-state flash card - can tell you.
MCV shoulders much of the blame for the confusion, since having established that (according to its unnamed sources) Microsoft was proposing to replace optical discs with a solid-state format, it then proceeded to talk about the threat this poses to retail anyway - as if retail cares deeply whether it's selling games on discs or on solid-state cartridges. The next generation of consoles will, inevitably, shift some focus away from physical retail and on to digital distribution, but that will happen regardless of what format is chosen for physical distribution of games.
Still, even if that approach hadn't been taken in the original article, the reaction would probably still have been broadly the same. The industry is pretty jumpy about anything that has an impact on retail right now. It's understandable, given the GAME crisis and the overall fall in physical sales. It's just not terribly relevant to this discussion.
"The industry is pretty jumpy about anything that has an impact on retail right now. It's understandable, given the GAME crisis and the overall fall in physical sales. It's just not terribly relevant to this discussion."
What we're actually talking about here, remember, is the question of whether games will be distributed on optical discs, as we currently do, or whether the next-generation Xbox will follow PlayStation Vita down the path of distributing games on flash cards. That's not a matter of digital retail strategy - next-gen games will be available simultaneously on digital download platforms and in physical retail, regardless of what form the physical product takes. Rather, it's a really straightforward question of cost:benefit.
What are the advantages of solid state? What are the disadvantages? What are the costs? Does it balance out? That's what we're really asking here. That's what Microsoft is asking, too. With solid state prices in freefall and given the problems the Xbox 360 has had with its disc drives over its lifespan, they'd be mad not to think about alternatives to discs. Thinking about it doesn't mean they'll do it, though - it just means they'll weigh the pros and cons.
What are the pros? Well, solid state memory gives you a fair few benefits in terms of the physical structure of the machine. Compared to an optical disc drive, it's small, it's got no complex moving parts, it makes no noise, generates little heat and doesn't suck up much power. From the perspective of a console hardware designer, those are all very positive things - although it's pretty obvious that they're much more attractive if you're designing handheld hardware (like PlayStation Vita). In a console that sits under a TV, plugged into the mains, power consumption, heat, noise and size are still considerations, but vastly less critical than they were in Sony's decision to drop discs from the Vita.
In a console that sits under a TV, plugged into the mains, power consumption, heat, noise and size are still considerations, but vastly less critical than they were in Sony's decision to drop discs from the Vita.
How about the technical aspects? In theory, solid state offers various advantages in this regard. Discs are a well-understood technology, but that doesn't stop them from being a bit of a pain in the backside - they stream data faster in some parts of the disc than others, and have long delays when you move between areas of the disc, forcing the read head to travel across the surface. They're very good at streaming large, continuous files (like movies) and pretty bad at providing access to loads of little files scattered around (like games). Developers solve this by cleverly arranging data on the disc, but it doesn't always work out; solid state should, in theory, be a much better medium to work from.
That's in theory. In practice, the term "solid state" covers a multitude of sins. It can mean the superb SSD drives which give computers a new lease of life and are beloved of anyone working with random access media anywhere, but it can also mean the cheap off-the-shelf SD card you pop into your camera, which offers far fewer advantages - if any. You get what you pay for, in essence. If you're paying for modern, high quality solid state, disc drives would be hard pressed to keep up with performance. If you're watching your budget, though, high quality optical drives will leave you in the dust.
Microsoft, of course, will be watching its budget. It's a trade-off. A good quality optical drive is expensive to build into a console, both financially and technically, but the media costs for games are subsequently very, very low. A solid state reader is cheap, but the media costs - if you're going to rival the performance of the optical drive - are high. Over the lifespan of a console, that could end up being very, very expensive indeed. Bear in mind that a single cent of added expense in game media means a million dollars of lost profit over just a few months of software sales.
It's also important to recognise where the technology now stands. It's lazy to compare solid state media with existing optical drives such as the PS3's somewhat sluggish Blu-Ray drive - instead, look at what the state of the art will be when next-gen consoles launch. Blu-Ray drive speeds have improved vastly in half a decade, and media prices have fallen dramatically. This is now a mature, cheap, attractive technology. Of course, in another half-decade, it'll look a bit old hat - which is why Microsoft is quite right to think about solid state alternatives - but if PS4 and Xbox3 launched tomorrow, the former with a Blu-Ray drive and the latter sporting solid-state, Sony would have a serious cost, capacity and performance advantage over its rival, at least for a few years.
Microsoft isn't developing a console in isolation - it's building a product that it'll pitch against very strong rivals, and it's building it with one eye on what they're going to do. Sony will absolutely have a Blu-Ray drive in the next PlayStation.
That's a further crucial thing to remember. Microsoft isn't developing a console in isolation - it's building a product that it'll pitch against very strong rivals, and it's building it with one eye on what they're going to do. Sony will absolutely have a Blu-Ray drive in the next PlayStation. It's deeply committed to it as a movie format and as a game format, even as it pushes towards the eventual goal of digital distribution, and this time out, Blu-Ray drives are cheap, easy to build and provide strong performance.
In the face of that, could Microsoft convince consumers that not having a drive at all - no ability to play Blu-Rays or DVDs, no option of backwards compatibility, and potentially no real performance or capacity advantage - is a step into the future rather than a critical error? It's a tough call. Apple manages it, of course, but Apple's operating in a very different ecosystem with a very different set of rules.
Is Microsoft thinking about dropping the disc? Yes, of course it is. Every manufacturer knows this day is coming sooner or later. Will it happen in the next Xbox? I don't think the numbers stack up right now. The cost is high, the advantages low. The company may keep its options open with a high-performance removeable memory slot - that would make sense - but it's hard to imagine a new Xbox shipping in the next couple of years without the ubiquitous optical disc drive making a return.

The return of Master Chief will have Halo competing with the big boys once again, says Microsoft.
The iconic hero was last seen in a new game in 2007’s Halo 3. Developer 343 decided from the outset that Halo 4 would mark the character’s come-back, and Microsoft believes his return will see the franchise competing with the likes of GTA and Call of Duty once again.
“Bringing Master Chief back is huge,†boasts Xbox director for global marketing Steve Beinner.
“Honestly, there’s not many franchises that have done what Halo has. There’s not many that have broken through and sold that much. You named two of them, GTA and Call of Duty. But if you look at platform exclusives, nothing is bigger than Halo.â€
Halo 4 producer Kiki Wolfkill added: “Halo has missed Master Chief a little bit. And that’s not to take anything away from the games that were off the main line. But we’ve built so much equity in Chief and really such a strong icon in Chief, that I do think people missed a little bit not being able to see what he was doing next. He is such a strong focal point.â€

Striking that balance of emotional impact and tension in video games is no easy task. For one, video games aren't real, so I generally don't concern myself much when I run over a virtual pedestrian or cut off an AI driver in the final lap. I don't care if I'm a jerk in a video game.
But there's something about watching some thug shoot an innocent virtual person in the face, directly in front of me, that really ticks me off. As Sledgehammer Games community manager Guy Beahm and I ran through the Spec Ops DLC coming to Modern Warfare 3 Elite subscribers tomorrow, and as part of Content Collection #1, I genuinely felt lousy when I was seconds from saving a hostage. I really wanted to save these people.

343 Industries already has "a definite story arc in mind" for Halo 5 and 6, the studio's told CVG.
Speaking at Microsoft's Xbox Spring Showcase earlier this month, 343 studio creative director Josh Holmes revealed the developer has "clear arcs" for where the second Halo trilogy will go, but in terms of how it executes those arcs, he said "that will be worked out as we go through the creative process".
"We have a definite story arc in mind. We have a very, very clear vision and understanding of the story for Halo 4 obviously and as you go further out from that point into the saga it obviously becomes a little looser," Holmes said.He also confirmed the Halo 4 plot is a direct continuation from Halo 3, but wouldn't say outright if previous games contained hints as to where the new game will go - or clues as to the identity of its mysterious new foe.
"Everything that we've created has been designed with constancy and tie-ins to the existing cannon," he said. "So all of the historical cannon that comes before this game has been taken into account and connects in meaningful ways.
"And there's been a lot of work that we've put in to building the franchise," he added. "Specifically, Frank O'Connor and the franchise team have been developing the fiction that surrounds the franchise and they've put a lot of effort into creating those tie-ins to the things that we're building for Halo 4.
"That's something that we've partnered together on for the last several years."

Seven years after it was first announced and almost two years since its initial release on Xbox 360, Alan Wake has sold over two million copies.
The game also launched on PC this February, recouping its entire development and marketing budget in its first 48 hours on sale.
Remedy’s head of franchise development, Oskari Häkkinen told CVG: "We've moved over two million copies - that's including PC. So after a slow start it's turning into something really positive. It's definitely had legs. I think narrative experiences just have a tendency for that.
"Alan Wake's like a cult classic if you like... People who have played and enjoyed the story feel the urge to tell their friends and other gamers out there that they need to try this experience, they need to play it.
"After Max Payne we could've literally gone, the whole team, and sat on a beach and sipped cocktails for quite some time. It's no secret that the Max Payne franchise was sold for $45 million. That put us in a really promising situation, but at the same time our hearts are in making videogames and not in sipping cocktails on the beach."

Microsoft says on the official Xbox site that the issue was a temporary one which has since been resolved. Those who are yet to see their Gamerscore restored are advised to log out and back in.
ORIGINAL STORY: Microsoft is investigating a bug that is wipingXbox Live users' Gamerscores when they unlock an achievement.
Forums - including Microsoft's own - and the Xbox Support Twitter account are currently awash with complaints from users who have unlocked a new achievement to find their Gamerscore being reset to zero.
On Twitter, the Xbox support team has suggested users try logging out, clearing the console's cache and recovering their Live profiles, but it appears doing so does not correct the issue in every case.

Stripping out Jet Set Radio's eclectic mix of original and licensed music would be a vandalism far worse than that perpetrated by its roving band of cel-shaded graffiti artists. Sega's proposal of a high-definition update to the cherished and influential Dreamcast game skated around the question, but now we know just how much of the music will remain intact: 16 tracks, roughly half of the 30 shipped between the North American and European versions.
Sega tells Joystiq it made every effort to pursue and re-license all the music, but cost and even the availability of certain music publishers became an impediment. In the end, Jet Set Radio keeps its original music (composed by Hideki Naganuma), and several fan favorites like "Magical Girl" (Guitar Vader) and "Funky Radio" (B.B. Rights). We'll probably survive without Rob Zombie.
Though the NTSC- and PAL-specific tracks haven't made the cut, the levels developed for those versions (including Grind Square) will be included with this summer's HD port. The preservation may not be flawless, but the presentation nearly is -- Jet Set Radio's bold, cartoonish aesthetic benefits immensely from the higher resolution, 16:9 display and 60 frames-per-second output. Oh, and there's one more thing you didn't have before: a second analogue stick to steer the camera!

Campaign to 'retake' Mass Effect 3 story ending raises over $30,000 in single day
Flagship EA studio BioWare is facing an unexpected protest from disgruntled fans of Mass Effect 3 who want an alternate ending to the sci-fi epic.
The Retake Mass Effect campaign has raised an extraordinary $30,000 in a single day from people hoping BioWare will release a second-take. All the funds are being transferred to the Child's Play charity, and is seen more as a symbolic gesture of fans’ hope that BioWare will act on the demands.
Organisers of the initiative believe that Mass Effect 3 “does not provide the wide range of possible outcomes that we have come to expect†from the series.
But they add: “We would like to dispel the perception that we are angry or entitled. We simply wish to express our hope that there could be a different direction for a series we have all grown to love.â€
Mass Effect 3 sold nearly one million copies globally in a single day, buoyed by rave reviews for the title.

The BBC's iPlayer catchup service will finally arrive on Xbox 360 next week, according to reports.
Eurogamer claims that the app will next week join similar offerings from fellow UK broadcasters Channel 4 and Channel 5 on Xbox 360. ITV Player is due later this year.
While iPlayer has been available on PS3 since 2009, it was feared the service would never make it to Xbox 360. Microsoft reportedly wanted it to be only available to Xbox Live Gold members, with the BBC insisting ensure UK viewers could access it for free.
That thorny issue was worked out - with Microsoft seemingly relaxing its terms as it seeks to reposition its console as an all-in-one, multimedia solution. The Metro dashboard update, released in December, heralded the arrival of video apps from a host of content providers around the world.

Capcom has apologised to Xbox 360 owners of Street Fighter X Tekken, admitting it cut an advertised feature from the game due to time constraints.
The publisher's latest is a two-on-two fighting game which lets two players pair up for online fights. Shortly after the game's release last week, Xbox 360 owners complained that two players on the same console were unable to play online, a feature which is available to PS3 owners and is listed in both versions' instruction manuals.
Last week, Capcom USA's Christian Svensson said the publisher did not intend to add local co-op to the Xbox 360 version with a patch, passing along a note from the development team which claimed it was not actually possible to do on Xbox 360 because "it is not possible to mix and match online and offline players."
Fans quickly pointed out that wasn't the case - the Halo and Call Of Duty series, and even another fighting game, last year's Mortal Kombat - allow Xbox Live users to take a guest partner online. Writing on the Capcom Unity blog, assistant producer Tomoaki Ayano confesses that the feature didn't make it in because the team ran out of time.
"Unfortunately, due to time and resource issues, we weren't able to get that feature into the Xbox 360 version and we apologise to those players who were looking forward to it," he writes. "Throughout the development process, there are times when new features are added (and we added a lot of them!) and there are also times where we have to make tough decisions regarding things to cut.
"This was one of those times. This mode is supported in the PlayStation 3 version, however, since we tackled that earlier and found the architecture of their system to be more conducive to implementing it.
"This is the most content we've ever packed into a Street Fightergame, so we hope that there are plenty of other modes and features to keep everyone busy for a long time."
Ayano does, however, promise "some information regarding new updates for Street Fighter X Tekken coming up soon." Players are keenly awaiting a fix for a bug affecting sound effects in online matches - Capcom last week said that fixing it could mean input lag, and is yet to confirm it will be patched - and are already bristling after hackers found 12 near-complete characters stored on the disc, waiting to be unlocked in a future update.

The upcoming Limited Edition Star Wars themed Xbox 360 hardware SKU will not be stocked at GAME, MCV can reveal.
News broke just moments ago that both Microsoft and Activisionhave joined Sega, Capcom, Nintendo and Tecmo Koei in refusing to sell stock to GAME Group stores.
MCV has learned that this will also include the stylish R2-D2 themed Xbox 360 and Kinect hardware bundle, that is due for release in April. It's the first hardware to be withheld from GAME following the very successful launch of PlayStation Vita last month.
The SKU was up for pre-order at £349.99.

Former Sony and Atari exec Phil Harrison was hired by Microsoft to help boost the Xbox 360's standing in traditionally more PlayStation-friendly Europe, a number of industry analysts have speculated.IDC Research manager Lewis Ward suggested to GamesIndustry International that the high profile appointment of Harrison as head of Microsoft's European Game Studios last week is part of a drive to improve the console's performance on these shores by leveraging the Brit's local contacts."Microsoft has a significantly smaller Xbox 360 installed base in Western Europe than it does in North America and Phil Harrison may be able to help drive additional sales there partly through ramping up more third party game and content/video partnerships," he said.David Cole of DFC Intelligence echoed that sentiment."I think the biggest impact of Phil Harrison will be increasing the European business. Microsoft has been very strong in North America, not so strong in Europe," he said."I think there is a huge opportunity for MS to expand its core Europe business and that is where Phil may have the strongest impact. That is a huge potential growth opportunity for the Xbox platform."Billy Pidegeon from M2 Research added that Harrison might help Microsoft pick up more development talent on the continent in the run up to the next round of console tech."His strong connections with European developers may lead to some acquisitions and will help Microsoft to prepare content for the next generation hardware launch."Ward also suggested that Harrison's time at Sony could help build bridges with developers put off by Microsoft's rather salty industry reputation."Microsoft is viewed as being somewhat tougher to work with in the developer community so bringing on a former Sony/SCEE exec may be read as a sign that IEB is seeking to soften some of its sharp edges."He also mooted that Microsoft brought Harrison on board because of his experience with cloud gaming while at streaming service Gaikai. Is it a sign that the platform holder is preparing to go down a similar avenue with its next console?"I now suspect the next-gen Xbox will launch toward the end of 2013. The fact that Phil H was on the board of Gaikai is interesting since I think the next-gen Xbox will have a strong cloud focus and so his arrival may also be about laying the groundwork for next-gen connected console services in Europe."

Lionhead's aborted Kinect project Milo & Kate wasn't axed due to any technical limitations, but because the market at large wasn't ready for what it had to offer, so says creator Peter Molyneux.Speaking in an interview with VG247, Molyneux explained that the game's core concept was totally at odds with current industry trends."The problem with Milo wasn't the ambition," he said."It wasn't the ambition or the technology; it was none of that. I just don't think that this industry is ready for something as emotionally connecting as something like Milo."The real problem with Milo, and this is a problem we had lots of meetings over, was where it would be on the shelves next to all the computer games. It was just the wrong thing. It was the wrong concept for what this industry currently is."Maybe this industry one day won't be like that, but at this particular time, having a game that celebrates the joy of inspiring something and you feel this connection, this bond; it was the wrong time for that."Molyneux added that some of the Milo tech has since made it into forthcoming franchise spin-off Fable: The Journey."There was a lot of technology that was in Milo that's now in The Journey, but it's just not this delightful celebration of youth."What we were trying to achieve with Milo was this key thing: the most powerful story I could possibly tell is a story that reminds you of your own childhood. We've all had times in our childhood, common experiences when we felt down, and we felt up, or we celebrated doing something for the first time, and I loved that thought."The Milo & Kate project was first shown off at E3 2009. However, a year later Microsoft announced that it was only a tech demo and wouldn't be seeing a retail release.Earlier this month Molyneux announced he was leaving Lionhead, and Microsoft, to work at new start-up 22 Cans.

The official Xbox website has been updated with a timeline to celebrate today's anniversary. The timeline stretches back to 2000, when Bill Gates unveiled the Xbox at GDC 2000. "I'm announcing the Xbox, which we're modestly titling The Future of Console Gaming," said Gates at the time.Gates unveiled the console a year later at CES 2001. He was joined on stage by wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. "They wanted a guy like The Rock," said The Rock at the time, "powerful, exhilarating, cutting edge - that's everything that the Xbox is."Original story: 10 years ago on this day - 14th March - Microsoft launched Xbox in Europe.Eurogamer wrote an article about it at the time. We used words like "mind-numbingly powerful hardware" to describe the big black box. And here's the original Xbox launch line-up.But Xbox was more than a console - it was the beginning of Microsoft's entire console gaming campaign. Bill Gates' company spent bucket-loads of money wedging a foot in a door near slammed shut by PlayStation. The original Xbox.
Today, a decade later, more Xbox 360 consoles (65.8 million as of end of December 2011) have been sold worldwide than PlayStation 3 (62 million as of end of December 2011). Microsoft has led the way with online console gaming, and made steps towards a controller-free experience with Kinect.Microsoft even yesterday hired former Sony man Phil Harrison, whose keynote speeches were synonymous with PlayStation 3 and the games it could offer.Microsoft will enter the eighth and next generation as Sony's equal - perhaps more.To celebrate 10 years of Xbox in Europe, Microsoft launched a 10th anniversary Xbox 360 bundle, which contains a 250GB Slim console, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo: Reach, Fable 3, Gears of War 3 and three months of Xbox Live Gold membership. This costs €280 from Amazon France. I can't find it on the UK Amazon website. Please let us know below if you can locate it.The Xbox turned 10 years old in North America on 15th November 2011.Patrick Garratt, editor of VG247, has written a detailed account of The Xbox Story for Kindle ebooks. He interviewed the original Xbox team, and charted the birth of Xbox 360 from email to shop shelf. Garratt's ebook costs £1.94.

Next gen console will not be seen 'anytime soon'
Microsoft will not be showing the next generation Xbox at E3 2012 or anytime soon.
In a statment released to Kotaku, Microsoft said it would continue to focus on the Xbox 360 after the console had its highest selling year in 2011.
"While we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon," reads the statement."
"For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360-and it's the best year ever for Xbox 360. The console is coming off its biggest year ever-a year in which Xbox outsold all other consoles worldwide. Xbox 360 didn't just outsell other consoles, it also outsold all other TV-connected devices like DVD players, as well as digital media receivers and home theatre systems. And in our seventh year, we sold more consoles than in any other year-defying convention."

Publishing contract for alleged Xbox 720 game 'fell through'
As many as 30 developers were made redundant at North Carolina studio Obsidian after Microsoft pulled funding for a next-generation Xbox project, an purported insider has claimed.
An anonymous source “familiar with the matter†said Obsidian’s directors had to cancel the mystery 'North Carolina' project after Microsoft decided against supporting the title, according to a Kotaku report.
Yesterday it emerged that Obsidian had made as many as thirty staff redundant, apparently due to the project cancellation.
Obsidian and Microsoft were unavailable to comment when contacted by Develop. The claims remain unverified.
Historically Microsoft has splashed cash on external game development projects prior to announcing its latest console.

DLC plans are getting a boost as well from 20 to 24 pieces this year
Call of Duty Elite is an "evolving" platform, Activision executives said during a presentation last week at GDC. We're now allowed to tell you about some of the stats they shared with us, which shines a spotlight on the growing interest from gamers in the online service.
Elite's big draw with hardcore Call of Duty players has been clans and clan operations. There have been over 670,000 clans formed in Elite so far, and 26,000 clans participated in the first clan operation, while over 200,000 players enlisted for the first (three-hour) operation.
Activision is also running "100K" days each month to give away $100,000 in prizes to winners of competitions. Some of the prizes will be simple swag, but others are huge like Jeeps, ATVs, and scuba diving trips. It's a nice way to engage the community and promote competition. Activision said that it's seeing "tremendous interest from the community" and a "great level of engagement."
This is really where the company envisions Call of Duty Elite 2.0, so to speak, as the longer-term plan is to take the level of integration even higher than what's been present in Modern Warfare 3. Activision said it's "getting the most traction" with Elite features that do engage the community.
Additionally, Elite subscribers (who automatically get all DLC) will be pleased to hear that Activision is bumping up this year's DLC from 20 pieces of content to 24. And the company stressed that it's "going after innovative ides" and not just issuing map packs.
On the mobile side of things, Elite is now approaching 2 million downloads of the app on iOS and Android, and a tablet app for Elite is still in the works.
GamesIndustry International spoke with Jamie Berger, VP COD Digital at Activision, so we'll have more on Elite soon. Stay tuned.

Days before walking away from both Microsoft and his own studio Lionhead last week, Peter Molyneux admitted that the public were too quick to judge Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Kinect technology.
“It’s just like any piece of new technology or invention, whether it’s a bike, a motorcar, or a flying machine. We as human beings just expect way too much, far too soon,†he told Game Informer.
“We expect the first wave of titles to be the most amazing, incredible things. We don’t think deeply enough about what actually can happen in the second and third wave of titles. Now the second wave is just coming, and we’re starting to realize that it’s very deep, it’s very refined, we really can look at the way you move and that’s what I love celebrating.â€
Molyneux also went on to detail the basic error that some who have approached the camera have made when conceiving new projects.
“I think it’s a kind of journey you have to go on yourself as a designer. The first thing you do is, you tend to be a bit lazy,†he stated.
“You think ‘How am I gonna get Kinect to do this, which is so easy to do on a controller?’. That’s completely the wrong way to think. What Kinect is is a very analogue experience, and what it enables you to do is deal with just how different human beings are.
“In Fable: The Journey, if I used Kinect and it forced you to sit a certain way and forced you to throw a certain way and forced you to emote in a certain way, I think that would be the worst thing I could do. The best thing I can do is celebrate how different you are and how analog you are and how the imprecision is actually a huge benefit.â€

We knew it'd be arriving on April 1st, but now we're actually longing for it. HBO has just released a half-minute teaser propping up the impending release of HBO GO on Xbox 360, and while it's available on a plethora of other platforms, being able to verbally command HBO (through Kinect, of course) to play your favorite shows just takes the enticement up another level. Care to see for yourself? Tap that video just after the jump.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 motion sensor Kinect is being used in a US department store to help female customers find the perfect pair of jeans.
A post on the Kinect For Windows blog reveals that Bloomingdale's in Century City, Los Angeles, debuted the Bodymetrics Pod earlier this week. Developed by London-based Bodymetrics, it uses eight Kinect sensors to produce a 3D map of a customer's body shapes and chooses a pair of jeans that both fits and flatters. The process takes less than five seconds.
Bodymetrics CEO Suran Goonatilake said: "Body-mapping is in its infancy. We're just starting to explore what's possible in retail stores and at home. Stores are increasingly looking to provide experiences that entice shoppers into their stores, and then allow a seamless journey from stores to online. We all want shopping experiences that are personalised to us - our size, shape and style."
The technology is only being shown off at Bloomingdale's for three days. Those trying it out will be able to sign up for a Bodymetrics account, and the company eventually intends for its technology to be used in the home, with users able to virtually try on clothing and order it online - smart stuff given that an estimated 40 per cent of clothing purchased online is returned because it doesn't fit.
This is the first time Kinect's body-mapping capabilities have been used at US retail, and follows Microsoft's release of a commercial version of the Kinect SDK as it seeks to expand the device's reach far beyond videogames into the business world. Hundreds of brands have signed up to use Kinect in their commercial activities.

March 18th, 2012, 15:42 Posted By: wraggster
Last week, MCVuk.com revealed that Microsoft has told its partners that the Next Xbox will not include a disc drive.
It’s a bold move – and one that sparked passionate debates and misconceptions about the birth of digital-only home consoles.
While the next Xbox will feature no disc drive, sources tell us it will offer some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage.
Whether this will be a new proprietary form like that of Vita, or a standard format such as SD, this will keep an avenue open for retailers to participate in.
PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT
The Hut Group’s business development head Sarah Jasper says keeping retail involved is vital: “An iTunes-style buying revolution is probably quite some time away. If the new Xbox ends up using a smaller cartridge, I would see this as a positive. Products would take up less weight and space, making them cheaper and easier to dispatch to customers.â€
Mastertronic’s Andy Payne adds: “Xbox must offer backwards compatibility for gamers, otherwise Microsoft risks losing millions of core Xbox gamers.â€
Retail also plays a role that digital currently does not: catering to the mainstream, casual and impulse buyers.
“A large proportion of content sales are driven by impulse,†explains Tesco entertainment boss Rob Salter. “The challenge for publishers is securing the extremely valuable real estate required to serve that impulse – either space in-store or online. So a switch to other forms of packaged goods could be desirable for both retailer and publisher.â€
But Game Guide editor Chris Ratcliff warns that retail will not be able to rely on boxed media alone: “A specialist retailer cannot exist in a fractured boxed and digital market unless they embark on some sort of diversification.
“Many former specialists now sell action figures, mobile phone accessories, LEGO – the new specialist indies are an Aladdin’s cave of boys’ toys – I even know of one where you can buy a full-scale working Dalek.
“Games will be just a product that will sell at next to no profit to keep the footfall to sell high margin gadgets and accessories.â€
CHANNEL SURFERS
HMV has long since been expanding both its portfolio to sell more than just standard boxed products.
“There is plenty of scope for retailers to remain a vital part of the process so long as they ensure that their offer is a multi-channel one,†says PR boss Gennaro Castaldo.
“The key thing is to create content that excites consumers. Get that right and, as we have seen with Vita and Mass Effect 3, and there will be opportunities for retailers across physical, online, digital – or a combination of all three.
“The change will come whether we like it or not, so the key is to embrace it and see what new opportunities come out of it.â€
Jasper adds: “You could argue that digital-centric home consoles already exist. The popularity of points cards demonstrates that there’s still a sizeable number of people who enjoy purchasing physical goods over digital ones, or who aren’t likely to become au fait with the digital marketplace just yet.â€
Regardless of what types of physical media carry games going forward, some companies believe the day of the disc is over.
WHAT’S A DISC?
Instead, some claim the future lies in solid-state cards and online products that will be activated at the point of purchase.
“The disc business is inherently a high risk one, where content value is recognised on manufacture not demand,†says Salter.
“A shift to a world where nothing is valued until it is sold, whether physical or entirely digital, is a highly desirable one for retailers. The current model is wholly unsustainable.â€
The Xbox 360’s successor could be the first home console to centre its sales around an online marketplace. And some publishers believe that a disc-less Xbox would still embrace retail.
Rather than aping Sony’s PSPgo – an ambitious but failed attempt at the model – it is more likely to follow the recently launched PlayStation Vita, striking a balance between physical and digital.
THQ marketing director Jon Rooke adds: “It is more likely that the disc-less Xbox would be one of two or three SKUs aimed at the high-end connected gamer – like Microsoft did with the Xbox 360 Arcade, Premium and Elite.â€

Anticipated console update fulfils pre-orders a month before release
The special Dark Edition of Xbox 360 game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has almost sold out in Europe, according to developer CD Projekt Red.
Pre-orders have been fulfilled ahead of the April 17 release, apart from in the developer's homeland of Poland, where extra copies of the game will be shipped to meet demand.
"We are really pleased that the Dark Edition was so well received by gamers," offered Michal Nowakowski, of CD Projekt RED.
"We're half way from the beginning of the pre-orders to the premiere and already European gamers bought all of the Dark Edition copies."
As of Last November, the PC version of The Witcher 2 had sold over 250,000 copies.

The days of the triple-A blockbuster are over, for today the games industry worships a new goal – the quadruple-A title.
Well, that’s if you listen to Microsoft, which in a recent job listing spotted by Gamefront used the term quadruple-A (or AAAA, to be precise) no less than three times.
“Microsoft Studios (Xbox) is looking for a dynamic and seasoned Executive Producer to lead and develop a world-class team who will own the creation and delivery of a AAAA experience that delivers on 1st party goals,†the listing reads.
“The EP will have P&L responsibility for a major Xbox AAAA console title and deliver the end-to-end AAAA title experience (Concept, Prototype, Greenlight, Pre-Production, Production, Release, ongoing revenue streams and a complete franchise plan).â€
Those who believe they’re packing the prerequisite number of As will need to be able to commute to Redmond in the US. And some other market experience – all of which can be found in the official ad.

Sure, you can buy Dragon's Lair for many, many (many) platforms, but Xbox 360 is not one of them. Unless you count buying a DVD version and playing it through the Xbox's DVD player. That embarrassing omission is now being corrected: a PEGI rating has been spotted for an XBLA version of the FMV game. We're shocked ... that it took this long for Dragon's Lair to end up on Xbox.
Being a rating and not an official announcement, there's no actual release date associated with this newly discovered XBLA release. We're checking in with Digital Leisure, who will probably tell us about a couple more upcoming ports of Dragon's Lair in the process of answering.

The BBC iPlayer is now available on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, some three years after the public broadcaster began negotiations to bring the video streaming service to the device.
It's been a long time coming but British Xbox 360 owners can now access the video-on-demand iPlayer service on their consoles. The Xbox 360 is the last console to gain iPlayer support with the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii already offering a version of the iPlayer.
Microsoft's requirement that video streaming services require an Xbox Live subscription was the deal breaker that stopped the iPlayer being made available on the console for so long.
"Given the BBC’s goal to reach its entire audience, I’m particularly excited that the BBC will be bringing iPlayer to all Xbox users at no extra cost as part of Xbox LIVE’s free membership," said BBC on-demand boss Daniel Danker.
BBC iPlayer boss Dave Price said that games consoles were no longer "just about gaming" and that they had transformed into home media hubs.
"I can tell you the fight is already happening in my home for control of the Xbox! And my wife has never been interested in Call of Duty!", Price blogged.

PopCap Games has announced Zuma's Revenge, a sequel to itsZuma puzzler released for PC and Mac in 2009, for Xbox Live Arcade.
The original was first released all the way back in 2003, and the enhanced Zuma Deluxe launched on XBLA in 2005. Revenge adds two brand-new modes, including Boss Rush and Weekly Challenge, and its mechanics have been updated too: there are no lives, no checkpoints and no more game over screens.
Van Riker, Zuma franchise marketing manager, said: "With well over 20 million game units sold to date, and following the successful launch of four new Zuma titles this year on several leading mobile and handheld devices, the franchise has never been more in demand.
"The PopCap team has done an amazing job of enhancing the level of challenge, game features and customisations with this latest version of Zuma's Revenge, which we believe make it a must for Xbox players."
No firm release date was set, but Zuma's Revenge is due this summer, and will cost 800 Microsoft Points.

Content Collection 1 for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is available for widespread consumption now on Xbox Live, after launching on March 13 for Elite members. Content Collection 1 includes four new multiplayer maps: Liberation, Piazza, Overwatch and Black Box, plus two Spec Ops missions, Black Ice and Negotiator.
Not "Black-ice negotiator," because it would be hilariously difficult to discuss anything of real import atop a slick of black ice, and MW3 is nothing but serious business.

Media company's internet TV service will offer Sky content, launching this year
Sky will launch a new entertainment service, Now TV, for consoles and other devices later this year. The service will offer users a pay as you go business model for accessing films and television.
"We'll offer two distinctive ways to watch: the market-leading full Sky service for the whole family, complete with the widest range of channels, high quality products like Sky+, HD and Sky Go, and the peace of mind of a monthly bill; or the flexible, more spontaneous, pay-as-you-go service of NOW TV," said chief executive Jeremy Darroch.
Pricing options will range from a subscription based model to renting single films with a one off payment.
"It will be available on a wide range of devices and offer instant access to a range of high quality Sky content, with no install and no contract. Starting with movies, it will soon expand to offer sport and entertainment as well. And customers will be able to pay monthly or rent a movie on a simple, pay as you go basis."
Earlier this week Microsoft announced a deal to feature the BBC iPlayer on Xbox Live after significant delays.

PopCap Games has announced their popular casual puzzle title Zuma’s Revenge is to receive an updated and upgraded port for Xbox 360.
Available previously on PC, Mac, DS, and 3DS, PopCap boasts that the upcoming Xbox 360 version will include several improvements and some added content.
For instance, the port will carry high definition graphics, achievements, and cosmetic avatar rewards. It will also bring two new, exclusive game modes entitled Boss Rush and Weekly Challenge.
Additionally the company plans on tweaking things a bit with ‘updated 2012 gameplay’ that apparently removes lives, checkpoints, and the game over point.
No release date for the port has been mentioned thus far, but it has been confirmed that the title will go for 800 MS Points ($10) when it does arrive.

Bayonetta may not be getting a big sequel to her high-kicking 2010 debut just yet, but she will be making a cameo appearance in this year's Platinum Games console release, Anarchy Reigns. Famitsu has the exclusive reveal ofBayonetta's guest appearance in the game, alongside ... pretty much zero other news about her inclusion in the game.
Given the inclusion of MadWorld's Jack Cayman as a playable character, we're taking a wild guess that Bayonetta will take the same route. We've reached out to Sega in the meantime for more info.

Digital only Xbox thought to be wide of the mark
Doug Creutz, an analyst for Cowan & Company, thinks the next Xbox could launch in fall of 2013.
This is according to a research note reported byCVG, which goes against rumors that the Xbox 720 will be digital only.
"Although not yet confirmed by Microsoft, we believe the next generation Xbox console could launch in the fall of 2013," reads Creutzer's note.
"We believe a digital-only next-gen Xbox is unlikely given risks to both Microsoft's market share and the gaming ecosystem as a whole from any attempt to kill used games."
"However," he concludes, "we do believe that Microsoft may be targeting a cheaper physical solution in an effort to get the initial price of the box down and speed up new console adoption, which would be bullish for software publishers."

Microsoft has announced Arcade Next, a four-week run of Xbox Live Arcade releases published by Microsoft Studios beginning next month.
First up is Trials Evolution, Finnish studio RedLynx's Trials HDfollowup with a heavy emphasis on user-generated content, with players using the same track editor its designers used. It arrives on April 18, for 1200 Microsoft Points.
The following Wednesday it's Bloodforge, a brutal hack-and-slasher from Silent Hill: Shattered Memories developer Climax, costing 1200 MSP. On May 2 another, decidedly cuter hack-and-slash title arrives in Lionhead's Fable Heroes, which supports fourplayer co-op and will cost 800 MSP.
Bringing the promotion to the close is arguably the biggest of the lot: 4J Studios' long-awaited XBLA port of Minecraft. Logically subtitled Xbox 360 Edition, it'll be released on May 9 for 1600 MSP.
Like all XBLA releases from April onwards, the above games will each have up to 30 Achievements, worth a total of 400 Gamerscore, to unlock.

Veteran journalist Chris Morris explains what a no-show for the next Xbox at E3 means
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]E&D Emerging Markets
www.microsoft.com/uk/games
The following is a guest post from veteran games journalist Chris Morris
With Microsoft's announcement that it has no plans to even mention its next generation console system at this year's E3, the annual video game trade show has gotten a bit less interesting.
It is, in some ways, a confusing decision. While no one expected the next Xbox to come out this year, publishers traditionally begin beating the drum for new systems about 18 months out - and there's no indication Microsoft has pushed the system to 2014. Also, with the company talking to developers now, the specs for the device have leaked out faster than water through a colander.
But there is some logic in keeping the new system close to the vest. And the decision could have a ripple effect on the rest of the industry.
Here are a few reasons Microsoft likely decided to keep Durango under wraps at E3 this year - and what that decision might mean for other players.
[h=2]Why scuttle Xbox Next talk?[/h]The games aren't ready - While everyone knew the next Xbox was in the works, Microsoft didn't start its road show for the new system until early this year. That's when developers got their first look at what was underneath the hood of Durango and what it could do.
While work may have been underway preliminarily at that point on launch titles for the next generation, teams haven't had much time to prepare them for the final (or near final) specs. And given how much competition has increased in the gaming space in the last few years, the new consoles are going to have to wow people right out of the gate. To ensure that happens, Microsoft knows it's better to wait until the games are closer to being done.
Why shoot yourself in the foot? - The Xbox 360 is still a powerful force at retail. While the Wii was already starting to flounder when Nintendo announced the Wii U, Microsoft doesn't face the same sort of pressure to please investors.

March 23rd, 2012, 00:35 Posted By: wraggster

Upon the release of the Kinect, Microsoft showed off its golden child as the beginnings of a revolution in user interface technology. The skeleton and motion detection promised a futuristic, hand-waving “Minority Report-style†interface where your entire body controls a computer. The expectations haven’t exactly lived up reality, but [Steve], along with his coworkers at Amulet Devices have vastly improved the Kinect’s skeleton recognition so people can use a Kinect sitting down.
One huge drawback for using the Kinect for a Minority Report UI in a home theater is the fact that the Microsoft Skeleton recognition doesn’t work well when sitting down. Instead of relying on the built-in skeleton recognition that comes with the Kinect, [Steve] rolled his own skeleton detection using Harr classifiers.
Detecting Harr-like features has been used in many applications of computer vision technology; it’s a great, not-very-computationally-intensive way to detect faces and body positions with a simple camera. Training is required for the software, and [Steve]‘s app spent several days programming itself. The results were worth it, though: the Kinect now recognizes [Steve] waving his arm while he is lying down on the couch.
Not to outdo himself, [Steve] also threw in voice recognition to his Kinect home theater controller; a fitting addition as his employer makes a voice recognition remote control. The recognition software seems to work very well, even with the wistful Scottish accent [Steve] has honed over a lifetime.
[Steve]‘s employer is giving away their improved Kinect software that works for both the Xbox and Windows Kinects. If you’re ever going to do something with a Kinect that isn’t provided with the SDKs and APIs we covered earlier today, this will surely be an invaluable resource.
You can check out [Steve]‘s demo of the new Kinect software after the break.

The "crews" Max Payne 3 players form in mulitplayer mode will transfer directly to Grand Theft Auto V multi, Rockstar co-founder and fancy mansion owner Dan Houser told IGN. Grand Theft Auto V will share Max Payne 3's crews via Rockstar's Social Club.
"Multiplayer is an ever-more important part of all our games moving forward," Houser said. "And by creating crews through Social Club, the crews that you create in Max Payne 3 will be ready and available for you to play in Grand Theft Auto V from day one."
After news of this crossover, we can imagine other Social Club integration possibilities -- Red Dead Redemption would have majestic horses galloping through the glittery streets of Los Santos, dodging bullets and rampaging cars alike. Horses; horses everywhere.

US shop GameStop has poured cold water on the rumour that the next Xbox will include anti-used game technology. In January Kotaku reported that its sources said Microsoft's next home console would use Blu-ray discs and that Microsoft was planning on including technology that would somehow combat used games, though didn't provide specifics on exactly how that would work.Today, in an investor call, GameStop executives said such a move is "unlikely"."We think it's unlikely that there would be that next-gen console because the model simply hasn't been proven to work," Paul Raines, GameStop CEO, said. "Remember, used video games have a residual value. Remember GameStop generates $1.2 billion of trade credits around the world with our used game model. So, consider taking used games out of that, you'd have to find new ways to sell the games."And, our partners are good partners. The console companies have great relationships with us."GameStop pointed out that the majority of the $1.2 billion of credit it generated went back into purchasing a video game. For many gamers, the shop said, this made buying games more affordable. It also said its highest market position is with Microsoft and Xbox 360 software. The shop talks to the first party almost "every day"."This is the kind of news that gets out in the industry and gets people worked up and hyper-ventilating and excited," Raines added."The pre-owned business is not a cannibalistic business. If you follow the popular conventional wisdom, you would think pre-owned is replacing new. The truth is, pre-owned is an opening price-point category. The average price is $18. A lot of it is old generation. What is is is a category for the customer who's maybe not ready to invest in a new game, but wants to get into the console business and console entertainment."What we've done is create a way for that new leading edge consumer to dispose of their old games, and that's what creates this great circle of life we talk about that so many try to imitate. That's how we see it."

Gaming charity Child's Play asked the organiser of the Retake Mass Effect campaign to stop accepting donations because some of those that pledged thought they were helping fund development of a new ending to Mass Effect 3.
This morning we reported that the campaign organiser had closed the donation drive - which raised almost $80,000 - because Child's Play had expressed reservations about being seen as a supporter of calls for BioWare to revise Mass Effect 3's ending. According to Penny Arcade, the gaming website which runs Child's Play, its concerns ran much deeper than that.
In a post on Penny Arcade, Jerry "Tycho" Holkins explains that Child's Play project manager Jamie Dillion "has been buried under mail about this situation. Apparently some of the people giving to the cause seemed to think that they were paying for a new ending to Mass Effect.
"She's been asked what the goal is, and how much they need to raise in order to get the ending produced. We've also been contacted by PayPal due to a high number of people asking for their donations back.
"This is in addition to readers who simply couldn't understand how this was connected to Child's Play's mission. We were dealing with a lot of very confused people, more every day, and that told us we had a problem."
It's compelled the charity to draft a new policy - "Child's Play cannot be a tool to draw attention to a cause; Child's Play must be the cause" - to avoid similar things happening in future.
Happily for the slow of wit who thought they were giving a poor indie studio a leg up to help it make a better game, BioWare founder Dr Ray Muzyka has confirmed the the Mass Effect team is "hard at work on a number of game content initiatives" that he believes will address fan dissatisfaction. Development will be funded through the studio's own, and publisher EA's, considerable financial means.

We're still waiting for the Comcast Xfinity TV app to appear on our Xbox 360 dashboards, but word is its beta tests have expanded to cover more Microsoft and Comcast employees, and it could launch as soon as the next week or so. In case you're wonder exactly what its capabilities will be when it will arrives, a post over at AVSForum points out a support page that's already live and details both the requirements for service and content available. Customers that have Xbox Live Gold and both internet and video services from Comcast will be able to log into the app with their ID and view video on-demand (no live TV) including free videos, national broadcasters and premium channels. That includes access to HBO Go (which will already have an app) and additional content from Max Go, as well as other premium stations -- basically the same lineup currently available on the Xfinity website. Also notable is confirmation that the cross-provider content search Microsoft is so proud of will apply here, and that any video viewed through the app won't count against those 250GB data caps Comcast has in place. Hit the link below for all the answers currently available, we'll wait until its actually launched to try out the promised Kinect voice and gesture control features.

When you first enter the outskirts of the Boston area, you may feel a certain sensation. Relax, that's not another Highlander in the vicinity, it's your body knowing that something special is about to happen. You're about to attend an awesome gaming convention and possibly come hang with your pals at Joystiq!
Today, we're glad to report the show will be even better: Capybara Games will have a playable build of Super T.I.M.E. Force at its booth, the developer hasrevealed. Super T.I.M.E. Force is an IGF 2012 entry and won the XBLA prize this year, meaning we'll see it arrive on Xbox Live Arcade eventually.
Capy will be situated at booth #764, so stop by if you want to play. You may have to push us out of the way, though -- fair warning and all of that.

We are proud to announce the launch of the latest Lizard add-on "Lizard Booster"; this will help speed up some operations on the Lizard unit like Slim KEY Read. For those who want to check the speed please view the video posted some time ago from the .
We have posted also a small Installation Guide (thanks to squallen and vgcrepairs), you can get it from the Downloads page. The device require to be installed inside the Lizard. It does not require wiring (full quicksolder pads). We encourage you to read the Install Guide and all the warnings before attempting to install.
In order to use the features of the add-on you will need run the latest Gecko firmware 1.30 or above. At this time the only difference among units having the booster and those who does not have it is the speed but we might in the future incorporate features that might require the booster.

just a quick note for those of you contemplating picking up the new "Casper" White Xbox 360 Special Edition 4GB Kinect Family Bundle and wondering what motherboard revision and drive it has inside. Although we had an inkling of hope that, being 4GB models, they might come with older Trinity boards, it came as no surprise that they in fact contain a Corona board and the Lite-On DG-16D5S 1175 drive. Also worth mentioning is that the packaging has changed compared to older bundles insofar as there no longer being a flap/window to reveal the serial number.
With the team's current progress, it won't be long until you'll be able to fw flash and/or RGH these.
Details of the unit we received are as follows:
"Casper" White Xbox 360 Special Edition 4GB Kinect Family Bundle
Corona Motherboard
Lite-On DG-16D5S-11B, FW ver. 1175, HW ver. A0A0

What's new/fixed (Xebuild GUI v2.04):
- Fixed: Now properly using new xell-reloaded, my mind apparently lied to me and said i had swapped the files in the perm directory, but i apparently only did it in the temporary directory, sorry!
- Added: The app can now also identify CB 1940 as Xenon and will ask you if you want to use CB 7375 for ECC creation
- Updated: Using nitram's new fixed script (previous one didn't like using external CB 7375 nor did it like using CB 1940 it also has CB 6750 problem fixed, so if you have a 6751 CB it'll now be able to build ECC's for that again!)
- Fixed: Error messages are no longer written in the middle of the normal output, it's written at the end like it should be (from python)
- Updated: You can now also build Glitch type freeboot images for xenon
** NOTE: This will use CB 1940, if you want to use a different CB version you'll have to manually edit the glitch.ini with both new version to use AND the CRC value, aswell as add the new CB file... **
- Changed: Changed the label of GGBoot/Glitchboot, it's now more obvious for Glitch type users that this is the option they will want to use, it now says "GGBoot (Freeboot for glitch)"
- Added: I can now extract SMC_config on my own (Thanks to RF1911 and cOz)
- Removed: The debug window no longer exists... if you need to check the KV/SMC data in HEX use a hex editor!
- Added: Several more easter eggs, go find them!
- Fixed: Forgot to add function to the flash nand button! WOOPS! it now works the way it should (NOTE: this will erase the first 50 blocks then write if the total size is more then 50 blocks)
- Fixed: Several bugs/errors in the nandpro operations window
- Added: You can now make presets for the nandpro operations window, meaning if you don't like my defaults you can set your own (it'll autoload "nandpro.xml" if it exists in the main directory)
- Added: NANDPro operations is now linked to the rest of the app, so everything you do here will be effecing the result aswell, for example, when you build a ECC or BIN
- Changed: Rebuilt NANDPro operations, default settings (which are no longer visuable in the main window) is set to use USB as device and nandpro 3.0a for nandpro version (unless you've put nandpro.xml in the main directory)
- Changed: Nandpro operations is now available to everyone (it is no longer restricted to advanced mode)
- Added: IP Scanner, this feature allows you to scan for your console on your network, useful if you can't see your IP or is just lazy... it only checks a range which is user specified (default is 10 - 100)
- Changed: The nandpro operations window has been rearranged a little, and i've removed some controls and placed them on the settings screen only (those that aren't commonly changed)
- Changed: FUSE.txt is no longer downloaded to Main application directory, instead it's downloaded to a temporary directory and copied to the same directory as your source nand is located in (if it's specified, otherwise it'll ONLY be in the temporary directory: files\temp\ beware that this folder is REMOVED upon completing the build process)
** NOTE: I haven't been able to test everything with Xenon's yet, but it should work just fine, i've tested building images but haven't been able to test the resulting images to make sure that it works properly... **
* Diskswap Configurator v2.0
This little app will help you in generating a fully operational
configuration file for Disk Swapper 1.1 by aiding you with how it
should be formatted and such
What's new/fixed:
- Changed: The app now only requires .net Framework 2.0
- Changed: I've re-written the whole app from scratch to make it better and easier to work with
- Added: Buttons to add devices for each textbox
- Removed: xextool is no longer included nor required for the app to be able to fetch Title ID from a XEX file
- Removed: Game name is no longer a part of the app, if you need to identify your games later by adding a label or something, do so manually by writing something like: ;Gamename
- Changed: The whole app has been re-designed, it no longer has multipile windows for each part, it is now slimmed down to a single working window, the only extra window is the help information

Microsoft recently confirmed that it's not going to be talking at all about its next Xbox, codenamed Durango, at this year's E3, instead keeping the focus on Xbox 360. Forbes columnist Chris Morris explains that Microsoft likely doesn't have games to show for the system yet — and why should they take the focus off Xbox 360, which currently has a lot of momentum? Ultimately, though, the decision not to show the next system 'could have a ripple effect on the rest of the industry,' he says. And by pushing Durango's unveiling back a year, 'Microsoft could find itself going head to head with Sony in a battle of features, even if the machines don't hit shelves at the same time.'"The latest rumor is that an ARM-based Xbox 'lite' is planned for 2013, with a true successor to the 360 coming some time after that.

A 7.1.1 update to the Windows Phone SDK has just hit Microsoft's servers today with tools tailored forTango's lowered memory support in tow. According to the company's Windows Phone Developer Blog, this refresh "doesn't add much in the way of new features to [the] WPSDK," mostly addressing emulation for 256MB handsets, compatibility for Windows 8, a patch for Visual Studio, bug fixes for the Advertising SDK, additional language support and an ability for IntelliSense to switch between RAM configurations. It's a hefty 300MB download, since the package accommodates both OS images (512MB and 256MB), and should take about 15 minutes for a complete install. Consider yourself part of the mobile dev pack? Then hit up the source below to get a head start creating those Metro-style apps.

Rumors of a new Xbox have been swirling for quite some time now, though they are now taking a slightly different shape. The next Xbox hardware won't actually be a generational leap, according to anonymous blogger MS Nerd, posting on Reddit. Instead, the console will actually be a stripped down version of the current Xbox, which will concentrate on "Arcade-style games" and Kinect apps. This is apparently the same ARM-powered console that MS Nerd firstdiscussed in November of last year. The device will be "price-competitive" with Apple TV and is apparently slated for a late 2013 launch.
Meanwhile, the "true successor" will launch sometime after with the same media apps and support for more core game experiences. Furthermore, the next generation of Kinect will supposedly launch sometime around 2015. At this point, keeping track of the next Xbox is becoming something of a chore, with estimates for a new launch ranging from late this year all the way out to 2014. For Microsoft's part, the company says there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at this year's E3.

Have you noticed that the number of annualised franchises in games is actually shrinking?
As the mid-tier of boxed games essentially vanishes off of High Street shelves and top publishers knuckle down solely on triple-A, retailers have been banking on fewer hits to see them through.
A total decrease in the number of games released means there are less iterated sports games and other sequels on the market.
In that environment, retailers love nothing more than knowing what actually is coming out – so thank heavens for Assassin’s Creed III, which was locked in for a October 31st launch two weeks ago.
Three by name, but actually fifth in nature, this new game continues a success story that started back in 2007. You know that backstory already. It was a new IP that wowed many and sold well – its sequels ACII, Brotherhood and Revelations built and built on that.
38m copies sold later, and Ubisoft reckons that Assassin’s Creed III has the potential to go even further.
RISE?OF?AN?ASSASSIN
“We knew we had something special when we first launched the Assassin’s Creed franchise back in 2007,†says Rob Cooper, Ubisoft’s MD for Northern Europe and Export territories.
Hindsight’s all well and good, but he’s not wrong here – AC has been almost defiant of the games industry’s march towards modernised mass-market action fare by offering intricate storylines amidst historical action. Most games start with a disclaimer about violence – Assassin’s Creed has a disclaimer about how its development team has a mix of staff from many faiths and upbringings, so potentially contentious was its take on the Holy Wars. Cooper describes that package as having “always offered an interesting alternative to the other action games on the marketâ€, and it’s a fair point.
If Call of Duty (which also had its real breakthrough during the same Christmas as Assassin’s Creed with Modern Warfare) is the mindless Michael Bay blockbuster made flesh in video games, then Assassin’s Creed is the Spielberg epic – just as commercial, but much more thoughtful and artistic.
But the competition is shaping up this Christmas already, with the yearly staples and Creed contemporaries FIFA, Call of Duty and Medal of Honor in the mix, plus returning series such as Resident Evil and BioShock. Can Assassin’s Creed hold its own against them?
“Absolutely. This is a huge investment for us,†explains Cooper. “We are in pole position to compete against the other titles that will come to market this Christmas. We’re extremely excited about this launch and very confident the game will perform well.
“Assassin’s Creed III is the biggest and most ambitious launch in Ubisoft’s history so we absolutely believe this game can and will continue to grow the franchise.
“When I saw this game for the first time, I was blown away by both the sheer beauty of it and the technical excellence. This is a real step forward for what is already a critically and commercially successful brand.â€
THE?MARCH?OF?PROGRESS
So what kind of step forward are we talking here?
Assassin’s Creed III has a new setting, new lead character and new storyline. After three years set in Renaissance Italy, the eight (yes, eight) development teams working on the project have jumped forward to the American Revolution.
The game has also been developed using a brand new engine that promises more expressive characters and improved AI. It has been in a three-year development cycle separate from the iterative production arc that brought ACII, Brotherhood and Revelations to market, and it has twice the production capacity of any other Ubisoft game.
So that’s quite a fair bit of progress, then.
Cooper elaborates: “Gamers can look forward to a new setting, a new protagonist and an entirely new storyline.
“We’ve enjoyed watching the growing speculation about where this game would be set and it’s good to be able to confirm where the game will take place now. In the previous games, Ezio’s story was powerful and engaging and grew Assassin’s Creed into one of Ubisoft’s biggest and most successful franchises, but it’s time to close that chapter now and take Assassin’s Creed in a completely new direction.â€
One thing Ubisoft has never been afraid to remind the world about is how, despite selling millions of units from day one, the franchise’s first instalment wasn’t perfect – something it remedied in sequel Assassin’s Creed II and then
refined from that game’s two follow-up spin-offs.
“We have spoken openly in the past about the work we have done on the franchise to continually improve the offering for our consumers. In fact, a lot of the work we did was based on feedback we were receiving directly from gamers,†says Cooper.
“Assassin’s Creed III will not only continue this legacy but will provide players with an entirely new gaming experience.â€
EXPANDING?THE?CREED
This is not a baby/bath water scenario, though, and some things won’t change so suddenly.
As well as being a retail hit, AC has been a successful digital business for Ubisoft too, selling both multiplayer and single-player add-ons for its games since ACII. That won’t change for ACIII – although Ubisoft isn’t going to give away all its secrets straight away.
“I think it’s fair to say that all major game releases are now supported by a DLC programme after launch and Assassin’s Creed III will be no different,†says Cooper.
But he says the bigger story is that the franchise is “expanding far beyond DLC aloneâ€.
The firm says its transmedia projects supporting Assassin’s Creed specifically have “been really successfulâ€, especially in the UK.
Along with a range of iOS and Facebook apps launched over recent years, Ubisoft has published official novelisations of its games through book publisher Penguin in the UK. Those novels have sold over a million units to date “with almost half of those sales coming from the UK market alone,†according to Cooper.
A book of Assassin’s Creed III is also in the offing to help expand the backstory and retell the overarching narrative of the new game, too – just one of many ways Ubisoft is hopping the push the brand further.
“You’re going to hear a lot of Assassin’s noise in the coming months,†jokes Cooper.
Certainly, the noise has already started. Just this week Ubisoft hosted a large-scale premiere of ACIII, at a London cinema showing with industry party.
As we say, retailers and the media love knowing what’s games actually are coming out this year, and Ubisoft knows it too.
Says Cooper: “We can’t wait to start showing our media and retail partners more on the game so everyone can see why we’re so excited here about what we have coming up.â€

Established Xbox rumour-monger ‘MS Nerd’ has claimed Microsoft will reveal a new Xbox Lite console at E3 in June.
The device, he says, will be similar in design to Apple TV, containing an ARM-based architecture and retailing for something in the region of £100.
It will focus on Xbox’s networked features such as streaming video and social networks and also work with the newer version of Kinect that has to date only been confirmed for PC.
"At some point after [the Xbox Lite], we'll see a Xbox Next, a true successor to the 360," he claims. "Details about it are very hazy, except that, like the 360, it will do games for core-audiences and the same media apps as the other device, also with Kinect."
Indeed, could this be the disc-less Xbox that MCV was tipped off about earlier this month?
MS Nerd adds that a true successor to Xbox 360 will follow the launch in 2013.
The validity of these claims is entirely up for question, of course – we won’t have any definitive answers until the weeks running up to E3 at the earliest.
While the thirst for next-gen machines continues, it does appear that there has been a change of strategy at Microsoft.
MCV revealed in January that both Microsoft and Sony were intending to reveal new hardware at E3 this year. At the time Microsoft’s position was the usual “we don’t comment on rumour and speculationâ€.
This stance, however, has changed, with Microsoft now highlighting the virtues of Xbox 360 and emphasising its long life ahead in response to any rumours of a new machine.
Indeed, the platform holder has even come out and outright denied that a new machine announcement is imminent.
And the truth of it is that Sony’s strategy is being dictated by Microsoft’s decision. The platform holder is determined to not allow a new Xbox the same head start on the market that Xbox 360 had over PS4.
It would, however, be more than happy to keep developing PS4 for another year – and Microsoft’s apparent decision to put back its Xbox 720 plans gives it licence to do so.

Entertainment app usage on Xbox Live has more than doubled year-over-year
In its quest to dominate the living room, Microsoft has continually upgraded its Xbox Live entertainment offerings, and the effort is clearly paying off, as today the company noted that Xbox 360 is being used more for entertainment than pure gaming.
Alongside the launch of the new Comcast and HBO Go TV apps, Microsoft released some new figures, specifically citing that Xbox Live Gold members are spending an average of 84 hours a month on the service, with entertainment apps doubling in usage.
No hard statistics were provided specifically on time spent with non-gaming apps, but Microsoft says that the combined time spent watching TV, listening to music and watching movies was the contributing metric.
This represents the first time the console has primarily been used for music, movies and other forms of entertainment, rather than continual online gaming sessions. In total, there has been a 30 percent year-over-year increase in usage on Xbox Live globally.
Even though BioWare released a major title in March, the whole of gaming has seen a drastic slowdown, causing major UK retailer GAME to go into administration. Perhaps gamers are watching more videos on Xbox Live instead of gaming during these harsh economic times.

[h=2]Xbox 360 used more for video and music apps than for gaming[/h]by Jessica Conditt (12 minutes ago)
10

More than half of the time people spend on Xbox Live is devoted to watching videos and listening to music, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi told the Los Angeles Times. "What we're seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment," Mehdi said.
The Xbox 360 isn't a gaming console; it's now officially an entertainment center that includes games, and it's becoming more popular with this angle. Today households spend an average of 84 hours a month playing games and using other apps on Xbox Live, up 30 percent from a year prior. To compare, the average household watches 150 hours of TV each month.
Even before Kinect, a tool that has always made more sense as an entertainment control rather than a gaming one, Microsoft has wanted the Xbox 360 to be "the heart of connected digital entertainment," as HBO senior vice president of consumer technology Otto Berkes put it.
Today Microsoft added MLB.TV, HBO GO and Comcast Xfinity TV apps to its lineup, which already includes Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Zune, Last.fm and others.

Xbox Live users now spend more time streaming media than gaming, according to study
Xbox Live users are spending more time streaming video and music than they are playing games.
According to Kotaku, Microsoft has released a report showing the average user spends 85 hours a month on Xbox Live, with 42-45 of those spent on streaming media.
Xbox Live usage is up by thirty per cent, and today the long awaited HBO Go, MLB.tv, and Comcast's Xfinity TV services were launched, giving yet more incentives for Xbox Live Gold memberships.
Though many (including HBO) worry that services like Hulu will bring traditional television down, most of the Xbox streaming apps require subscriptions of their own.
This includes the three new apps, with HBO Go requiring both traditional cable and HBO subscriptions.

Assassin's Creed 3 may be the fifth core entry in the series in just six years, but it seems even fans calling for the franchise to take a break have been won round by the upcoming title's new direction.
With a fresh hero and a new setting, Ubisoft's US arm said today that AC3 is on track to become the most pre-ordered game in the publisher's history. After only three weeks of being available for pre-order in the US, AC3 pre-orders are higher than any previous AC game in the same time period, and more than ten times greater than they were for last year's AC Revelations in the same timeframe.
Ubisoft senior VP of sales and marketing Tony Key said: "On October 30th players will experience the biggest game launch in Ubisoft's history with the highly anticipated release of Assassins Creed III.
"With a development cycle of three years, Assassins Creed III is the true next-generation experience of the Assassins Creed brand. The production value of the game, combined with the biggest marketing commitment we've ever made, will make Assassins Creed III the highest-selling Assassin's Creed game ever.
"Additionally, the new setting and hero makes this the perfect time to jump into the series for anyone that has not previously played an Assassin's Creed game."
Earlier this week we published our first Assassin's Creed 3 preview, as well as a pair of video interviews with creative director Alex Hutchinson and senior producer Francois Pelland.
