Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski has said that Gears of War 3 will include minor RPG elements.
"You'll see a little bit more RPG elements in the next Gears game that are very light," he told Gamasutra.
Bleszinski also reiterated his belief that "the future of shooters are RPGs".
"The shooters that I've liked the most lately are ones like BioShock, which had some light RPG elements, as well as Borderlands, which I continue to gush about," he continued.
"Moving on from there, game developers have a way of cross-pollinating an immense amount. Gears was influenced by Resident Evil, then Resident Evil 5 was influenced by Gears. So, maybe you'll see elements from more RPGs, or Heavy Rain narrative style elements, start bleeding into the genre."
Later on Bleszinski talked about his feelings on Mass Effect, another series that relies on the cover-based shooting for which Gears is best known.
"The thing that was cool was that Mass Effect is kind of an RPG for me, with the cover-based shooting. I think there's a reason why it's been successful. Because gamers love Gears," he said.
"It's like well, here's something that's like Gears, but even has more depth, and a different setting. It's Star Wars for this new generation, right? Well, and the addition of the potential for having sex in a video game is also very powerful."
Gears of War 3 is due out exclusively for Xbox 360 on 8th April 2011.

Microsoft's pre-E3 Project Natal showcase will be, "A spectacular live performance imagined by Cirque du Soleil," according to US invitations.
The platform holder confused the press earlier this month by insisting that the Sunday, 13th June affair would be a "Technology-free event". "Please leave your technology at home, no photography or video allowed," it said.
Cirque du Soleil is a Canadian outfit that does slightly bonkers shows mixing dance and circus acrobatics. This sort of thing.
The invite doesn't explain how the group is involved in what's described as the "World Premiere Project Natal for Xbox 360 Experience", but presumably they're not going to do star jumps and whack balls at bowling pins.
Microsoft will hold its traditional E3 conference a day later, where it is expected to price and date Natal and show off the hands-free controller's launch line-up.
The Xbox 360 firm is well known for its love of E3 stunts. As well as using the trade show to announce that previous PlayStation-exclusive series like Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy would also appear on its platforms, it's known for bringing in the celebs - last year managing to rustle up the non-dead Beatles and Steven Spielberg.
Thanks to Microsoft, we have also seen Duffy perform live. Breathtaking.

Activision has announced that the Modern Warfare 2 Resurgence Pack will be released for Xbox Live users on 3rd June.
Inside are five new maps, although they're not named.
To celebrate, Infinity Ward will host two double-XP weekends either side of release: one on Friday, 28th May and Friday, 4th June.
There's no mention of price, but Resurgence offers the same amount of content as the Stimulus Pack, which cost 1200 Microsoft Points (£10.20/€14.40).
The Stimulus Package was exclusive to Xbox Live for 30 days, and the Resurgence Pack is likely to follow that example before appearing on PC and PS3.

DICE has announced a new, four-player co-op pursuit for Battlefield: Bad Company called Onslaught mode.
This is "coming soon" to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace. The content will be paid for, according to a post by DICE associate producer "Bazajaytee" on the EA forums. He didn't say how much, simply answering "nope" when asked if the content would be free.
Onslaught mode will not be available on PC. "We aren't ruling out Onslaught on PC, but at this time we are researching how to bring it to PC without affecting players who don't have Onslaught or their own server to run it on," said Bazajaytee. "We haven't given up on a PC version of Onslaught as I say, just we have a lot things to work out first."
Onslaught mode is for up to four players. To begin with, there will be four maps to play: Valparaiso, Atacama Desert, Isla Innocentes and Nelson Bay. They've been redesigned with new lighting, time of day, more vehicles and other touches.
Each map has a different focus. Atacama pushes vehicular combat to the fore while Nelson Bay concentrates on infantry. Onslaught will have leaderboards for squads to compete on.

Microsoft and Turn 10 have released the Exotic Cars Pack for Forza Motorsport 3.
Take the SSC Ultimate Aero - the fastest car allowed on the road, holding a top-speed record of 257mph. Or there's the Nurburgring lap-time record-holder the Radical SR8 LM. No road car does the famous course better, apparently.
Those two plus eight others are all parked tightly into the Exotic Car Pack. This costs 400 MSP (£3.40/€4.80) and can be queued for download from the Xbox.com website.

A couple weeks ago, we discussed news that some dedicated Halo 2 fans were keeping the game's multiplayer alive after support for online play was dropped. Now, a few days shy of a month after support ended, the last users have been knocked off the server.
"[A user named] Apache N4SIR outlasted everyone. 'May 11th @ 0158hrs I was FORCEFULLY REMOVED!!' he wrote on the forums at Bungie.net. 'I thought I'd be the one turning off the lights but that was done for me. Good night everyone, my Elite needs a rest.' His last comrade in arms, Agent Windex, was still signed on, as spotted by Kotaku at 4 p.m. US Pacific Time on May 10, but their adventure, which began on April 15, ended after Windex announced 21 minutes later that he had been removed from play and Apache N4SIR suffered a similar fate hours later, as he described in his post.

The grappling hooks that made the gameplay in Lost Planet a true 3-D experience are back, allowing gamers to gain tactical advantage by quickly scaling buildings.
No action game would be complete without an arsenal of weaponry, and Lost Planet 2 has a huge variety of hardware for players to unleash on unsuspecting enemies. Machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, lasers, sniper rifles, grenades and a host of other weapons are scattered across the game. However, Lost Planet 2’s biggest weapons come on two legs: the heavily armed and armored robotic Vital Suits return in greater numbers and variety than the first game. There are VS that transform into other vehicles, hold up to three players and some that even take multiple players to operate.

Once hacked, the Zune HD's rabid fanbase wasted no time in ensuring the device could play Doom. Now, the ZuneBoards want to give it Zelda, too. User BackAtIt has taken the wrappings off the first working emulator for Zune, which is currently capable of playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color ROMs, but little else -- though this "Visual Boy Zune" app is ported from the same VisualBoyAdvance code that's enabled handheld emulation since 2004, it's in early alpha with quite a bit of work left to do. A recent update enabled state save emulation and a ROM selector, but there's no audio output, let alone Game Boy Advance support; BackAtIt says he'll need to rewrite much of the codebase to take advantage of the Zune HD's Tegra architecture. Still, it's never too early for a proof of concept video, and you'll find two blurry ones after the break -- unless you'd rather try it out for yourself at the source link.

Microsoft has struck a deal with television manufacturer LG that will see it jointly marketing Xbox 360 3D games, according to a report published today.
Going on a Korean press release translated by Engadget, it seems the two companies will jointly market 3D-capable LG TVs with 3D Xbox 360 games from this June onwards.
No mention is made of new hardware or a system update for the Xbox 360, similar to the one Sony has released for the PlayStation 3 in order to unlock 3D capabilities.
According to the release, the launch will begin in South Korea and - if successful - could be expanded through the Asia Pacific region.
Sony's first 3D TVs have been packaged with a number of 3D adapted PS3 games, while the company is also set to film 25 World Cup matches in 3D this year, in conjunction with FIFA.

The Project Natal motion-sensing camera for the Xbox 360 will be launched worldwide "somewhere in October", according to Microsoft Saudi marketing manager Syed Bilal Tariq.
Speaking to website GamertagRadio, Tariq was asked when the device would be available in Saudi Arabia. He answered that the device would be launched in Saudi Arabia on the same day as the rest of the worldwide - implying a simultaneous launch in North America and EMEA regions at least.
Tariq added that the launch, "is going to be somewhere in October and we will be in a position to confirm the date at E3, which is in June, but definitely it is going to be October 2010".
Although Microsoft has repeatedly hinted at an autumn launch no official has ever confirmed a specific date or month. New hardware bundles, perhaps featuring a redesigned console in the manner of the PlayStation 3 Slim, have also been rumoured but never confirmed.
Project Natal remains only a codename for the device, which uses voice and face recognition as well as sensing a user's wider body movements. The final public name for the device is also expected to be revealed at E3 in June.
