Current versions of Microsoft's Xbox 360 are to be discounted, following last night's unveiling of a new, sleeker model of the console.
The hard drive-free Arcade SKU will be slashed by $50 to $149, reports Dean Takahashi, while the 120GB Elite falls from $299 to $249.
Both models will be sold until current stock depletes, as the new 'slim' 360 uses different power supply and hard drive fittings to the outgoing consoles, as well as ditching support for memory units. More discounts are possible as the old models reach the end of the line.
The new-look 360 will retail for $299, the price of the Elite before this discounting, and as well as being smaller and quieter adds new features such as built-in wireless networking, a 250GB hard drive and a fifth USB socket. A $199 model is also expected, though its specifications are yet to be revealed.

Liking the form factor, but not the price? You could settle for an existing Xbox 360 Elite, Pro or Arcade, as we hear the introduction of the new Xbox 360 is being accompanied by a $50 price cut on existing units, but if your heart's set on that glossy black, there's a cheaper Stealthbox coming down the pike eventually. GameSpot reports a slim Xbox 360 Arcade successor will appear after the now-discontinued SKUs sell out for the same $200 as before. Not exactly surprising, but it's always nice to know.
And if you've preordered your shiny new Xbox 360 but have a older unit at home, you're going to need a little something to move those profiles, avatars and game licenses over. Should you have an Elite (or if you've upgraded your hard drive) you might find the cable you need between your couch cushions, but on the off-chance your Xbox 360 Hard Drive Data Migration Transfer Kit hit the dumpster long ago, you're not entirely out of luck. The one-way, single-use device will retail soon for $20, a mere $5 more than what it costs at the Microsoft Store -- or $19 more than used cables fetch on eBay.

Ubisoft's E3 conference opened today with Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi showing off his brand new game.
It's titled Child of Eden and works with Xbox 360 Kinect - although it will also be released on PS3. Wearing white gloves, Mizuguchi used his left and right hands to direct a glowing blue reticle around the screen. He appeared to be shooting at swirling, glowing shapes, producing sounds with each hit. Pumping house music played in the background, reaching a crescendo towards the end of the demo.
In other words - yes, it looked and sounded a lot like Rez. In fact, the sound effects sounded exactly like those in Mizuguchi's much-loved previous effort.
At the end of the demo, the title Child of Eden and the slogan "Hope and Happiness" appeared on the screen. Mizuguchi explained to the audience that once again, he is producing a game based around the concept of synaesthesia.
"I adapted this principle to music, shapes and colours for my game," said Mizuguchi. "In association with MIcrosoft and Kinect, we are able to provide a sensory experience."
The game's due out in Q1 2011 according to the press release.

With serious questions being asked of the accuracy and reliability of Microsoft’s Kinect tech in recent weeks, an impressive demonstration at Microsoft’s E3 press conference has proven all doubters wrong.
Working demonstrations of several Kinect launch titles showed that even in an environment as hectic as the LA stage, Kinect is able to accurately track player’s movements – no matter how hectic.
Further additional functionality was shown, including Kinect’s ability to takes pictures of you while you play. These can then be shared with friends online.

In the wake of yesterday's Microsoft E3 press briefing Warner has confirmed that it is to release Game Party: In Motion, which will make use of the forthcoming Kinect Xbox 360 Motion Control System. The party gaming compendium is to be an exclusive for the Microsoft platform.
“Game Party: In Motion is a great fit with Kinect for Xbox 360, offering interactivity, full body motion and intuitive gameplay to players in a completely new way,” said Samantha Ryan, senior vice president, production and development, at WBIE.
“We’re bringing one of the most popular party game series to a platform that is tailor-made for the game’s universal appeal and pickup-and-play style.”
Some of the 16 distractions included in the latest in the Game Party series sport titles such as Darts, Hoop Shoot, Table Hockey and Rootbeer Tapper, giving some impression of the atmosphere and interaction Game Party: In Motion is set to deliver.
Game Party: In Motion is being developed by FarSight Studios, and boasts a number of features such as support for head-to-head online gameplay over Xbox Live, and social network integration.

Even as the Kinect-exclusive Dance Central got certain Engadget editors into the groove, it didn't resonate with all of us, so we headed downstairs for a peek at Your Shape, to get in touch with our inner Zen -- and beat things up, of course. We had a blast punching blocks, though the system only recognized strikes that crossed our own body, and some editors were tripped up by the mirrored virtual doubles the game generates. Actual yoga poses were far better done, with Kinect accurately tracking our moves with little perceptible delay. Unlike in Wii Fit, which merely measures center of balance, a joint gauge of sorts (you can see the angle of your bones) let us readily tell when we were slouching or off-kilter, and adjust our posture respectively. We broke a sweat, looked like doofuses and had fun doing it -- what more could you want?

EA has claimed that Crytek's Crysis 2 will be the first "true 3D" game for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. This is likely EA's marquee 3D title promised at the last Electronic Arts investor call. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli stated that the "3D revolution" is part of the team's continued "strive to raise the technology bar ... The 3D experience represents a quantum leap in interactive entertainment. With all of the same story and action seen in the 2D version of the game, the 3D version adds another dimension of intensity and immersion to the action."

Planning on buying a Kinect this November? If you've got one of those ... not-so-Slim Xbox 360s, then you're gonna need some extra power outlets, as Microsoft tells us that older Xbox consoles will need a separate power supply for the motion controller add-on. While new, less opulent 360s will be able to support the Kinect without any external wattage, older consoles will require a power outlet for the device to work.

It wasn't totally clear during Microsoft's E3 keynote, but the new Xbox has brought some name changes with it: the new shiny black console is officially "the new Xbox 360," while Microsoft's fact sheet refers to the original Xbox 360 as the... Xbox 360 Original. Clever, clever. The Original will still come in Elite and Arcade versions, which have new lower prices, so there's a chance we'll see something like the Xbox 360 Original Arcade, but hey -- that sounds like a Microsoft product name to us. We'll let you know if things change, or you can just call the new one the "Stealthbox" like us and avoid all this confusion entirely.

Microsoft has announced that Crytek is developing a new exclusive game for Xbox 360 codenamed Kingdoms.
"I'm thrilled to announce an exclusive title from a leading industry developer," said Microsoft's Phil Spencer, introducing the game during Microsoft's E3 conference on Monday.
A trailer followed showing a barren, burnt landscape. A gladiator wandered across it "looking a bit grumpy" according to our reporters on the ground. Blood dripped off his sword.
We'll have more on the game codenamed Kingdoms when there's more on the game codenamed Kingdoms.

Microsoft's director of product management for Xbox, Aaron Greenberg, has assuaged fears that the imminent arrival of Kinect means the 360 will transform into a casual platform.
"The nice thing for us is that we have diversity," Greenberg told IGN. "We're not in any way saying that we're not going to continue to do the best or focus on the blockbuster games that make Xbox great for gamers."
"We're going to continue to invest in Live and the online community there. This is additive, on top of what we already have… we're not taking our entire platform and making everything controller-free."
More details on the former Project Natal, its pricing and its launch games (not to mention hopeful confirmation of the rumoured slimline 360 SKU) are expected at Microsoft's hotly-anticipated pre-E3 briefing, which is due to commence in less than an hour. Stay tuned to GamesIndustry.biz for highlights and analysis.

It's not all games and motion control for Microsoft at E3 this year-- the company has just announced that the complete library of Zune music is joining the video options already available on the Xbox 360. Details are still a bit light otherwise, but you can rest assured that it's both Kinect and Bieber compatible.

Thought Kinect was just for kicking balls and making a fool of yourself? Oh now, you can now use it to do everything from find your friends and to control media playback. Microsoft has confirmed at today's E3 press conference that Forza 3 will get support for Kinect; the 360 motion controller formerly know as Natal.
The title stands out as a 'non-casual' Kinect release, in stark contrast family-friendly games such as Kinectimals, Kinect Adventure, Kinect Sports and Joyride.
While it has not be confirmed, Kinect-support will presumably be added to to the Turn 10-developed game with an update.
Players will be able to play the critically acclaimed racer simply by miming holding a steering wheel, as demonstarted at the press conference.

Microsoft and Harmonix have joined forces to create Dance Central, a new dance game that uses Kinect to track players movements.
The game features a varied soundtrack of classic and contemporary pop, hip-hop and R&B hits, from artists such as Lady Gaga, No Doubt, Beastie Boys. Additional songs will later be available on Xbox Live.
Harmonix has worked with world-class choreographers to come up with authentic routines. Dance Central will boast over 600 moves, split over 90 routines – some of which will be familiar from the artists’ music videos.
The game also features a mode for more casual gamers entitled Break It Down, which allows anyone to learn to dance by tackling each move in every routine once at a time.
During Microsoft’s E3 press conference, Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopulos said: “At harmonix we’re always thriving for new ways to get people experiencing music. Dancing can be intimidating for some people, but dance central was developed so that everyone can play.”

Microsoft's just revealed the Xbox 360 Slim - and it ships in North America TODAY.
The new console sports a 250GB HDD, built-in Wi-Fi and is "ready for Kinect". It's also the same price as the vanilla Xbox 360.
It also looks like it sports some pretty beefy ventilation shafts on the sides. That'll mean any internal fans can run a little quieter. In fact it's not just quiet, the Microsoft website describes the slim as "silent"
The new model was said to retail at $299, which will translate to around £200 in the UK, around the same price as the current Elite model.
The Xbox 360 slim has been highly anticipated in the run up to the Microsoft conference. Leaks began to seep through the internet cracks in the run up to E3.
An Italian advert for the 360 slim pretty much outed the new model along with the 'Kinect' name yesterday.
Microsoft announced that everyone at its E3 conference will receive a 360 Slim for FREE. GITS.

Microsoft has announced a deal that will see the Xbox 360 platform receive Call of Duty game add-ons first for the next three years.
While the financial terms of the deal weren't released, it mirrors the kind of agreement that saw Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable content released exclusively for the Xbox 360 for a rumoured $50 million in 2008.
The news, released during this year's Microsoft press briefing at E3, is the start of - according to Don Mattrick - a "year of transformation" for the console.
"If you love games, Xbox is the only place for you and your friends to play all three of the biggest blockbusters in our industry - Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty."
The deal will start with the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops, slated for a November 9 launch date - although the nature of the add-on content is not yet known.

New titles in the Gears of War, Fable and Halo franchise have all been shown off in this year's Microsoft press briefing, as part of the E3 Expo week in LA.
Gears of War 3, Fable III and Halo: Reach were all given airtime in the conference, with Cliff Bleszinksi, Peter Molyneux and Marcus Lehto all taking to the stage to promote their respective titles.
All three games were expected to have been shown at the briefing, but one surprise was a teaser for a new, 360-exclusive title from Crytek - a gladiatorial-style game called Codename Kingdoms, although little additional information was given.
The Gears of War, Fable and Halo games are all set for release towards the end of 2010, while Metal Gear Solid Rising - introduced by Hideo Kojima - was also on the slate.
