In a surprising expose on the seedy underbelly of pre-release gaming demos for the whole family, Parade Magazine's own A.J. Jacobs reports on a bit of fun gone awry. Mr. Jacobs details the horrific scene: "We next tried an obstacle course where you have to dart under trees and jump over logs. I was really working it, leaning my body and windmilling my arms. Unfortunately, Zane, 3, wandered a bit too close to me and, well, I inadvertently smacked him in the face. He started crying." Luckily, Zane bounced back quickly, and the Jacobs household (6-year-old Jasper was also in attendance) quickly determined that their best chances at beating the few Project Natal demos Microsoft was showing them might involve benching the old man. The Jacobs brood got three demos in all, including a couple we haven't had a chance to play ourselves: an obstacle course, and a river rafting game we've seen referred to as "River Rush." You can see a brief glimpse of it yourself (along with entirely more arm flailing than is strictly necessary) after the break.

Criterion is gearing up to show lift the lid on its new Need for Speed title, hinting that it will hark back to the roots of the series.
EA confirmed last year that Criterion is working on a new NFS, pledging a better game than in recent years after admitting that quality has suffered due to its failure to put "adequate resources behind the franchise".
A recent Twitter post from Criterion teases: "Today we saw the first magazine articles featuring our new game. And you will too. Soon."
It goes on to hint that the game may take the series back to its roots. One fan asks what Criterion's favourite NFS game is, to which it answers "the original 3DO game". And in a later post, Criterion responds to a player who expresses their love for the "old school" NFS games saying: "We have a feeling you might like it!"
Could it be planning a pre-E3 reveal to beat the noise? We hope so.

Major UK retailer GAME will begin taking pre-orders for Microsoft's motion-sensing camera bar, Natal, from Sunday June 13, according to EG.
The date comes as the site launches a special page dedicated to Natal and its features, ramping up hype before E3 kicks off later this month where all will be revealed.
The pre-order date aligns with Microsoft's planned Natal-specific press conference on the same day in LA - prior to E3 and Nintendo and Sony's press shows - in which MS is expected to confirm the device's final name and release date, along with the launch games.
Natal has recently been shown at the WSJ D8 conference, in a rather final-looking form. Could these shots be the first glimpse of Natal as it will look when it's released (minus the 'development unit' notice)?

Ubisoft has moved to quash hopes that a mysterious image released this afternoon is related to Assassin's Creed 3.
Apparently the image - which shoes a very Assassin's Creed-esque bloke with a hood standing in front of pyramids - is related to a "non-game related project," a Ubisoft spokesperson just told CVG.
The Assassin's publisher has previously branched off into making toys and even creating its own gaming art gallery.
We're not 100 per cent convinced. It looks very game related to us.

Hey -- you know Microsoft's Project Natal? Well we've just gotten an up close look at what appears to be the retail version (though it's clearly marked a developer unit). We couldn't storm the stage while Walt and Kara (and her son!) were showing it off, but no one seemed to mind that we took a load of these shots for your perusal.

An Xbox Live version of TV and movie streaming service, Hulu will make up one of Microsoft's big E3 announcements.
That's according to the "very reliable source" of tech site, Gear Live, which reports that Microsoft is set to unveil the Xbox Live version of the service this month.
Apparently, similarly to the other US-only streaming service, Netflix, Hulu will require a subscription fee to use.
It's all guess work at this point as to how much it'll cost exactly, though it's been speculated that Xbox Live users will have to pay for access time (a month, quarter) using Microsoft Points.
Hulu currently allows streaming of TV shows and movies from NBC, Fox, ABC, and many other networks and studios. Even if this does turn out to be true, we reckon the chances of it coming to Europe are minimal.
We'll contact Microsoft for comment.

Microsoft has added Soulcalibur IV and (in US) Medal of Honor: Airborne to the list of 360 games that you can download directly to your ever filling hard drive.
Airborne has been on the UK Games on Demand service since February, and see's players once again pick up their Garrand and delve into the familiar scenes of a virtual WWII, shooting Nazis, as the MoH series has been for over a decade. Can you really take any more?
Soulcalibur IV is "last chapter in the battle between the spirit sword Soul Calibur and the cursed sword Soul Edge", apparently. Whatever. It has gorgeous environments, giant weapons, and fit females with boobs large enough to render any real girl completely unable to perform half the acrobatics they do in this game. Which is pretty much how SC has been since its conception too, but its impossible to get bored of breasts.

Haemimont Games, the studio best known for producing the Tropico series, has unveiled its next offering.
Titled The First Templar, it's an action adventure game in development for PC and Xbox 360. The game is set in the 13th century and features 20 "historically accurate" locations. You control a French Templar and a noble lady who has been branded a heretic. In single-player mode you can switch between the two main characters as you play. There's also a drop-in, drop-out co-op mode.
Expect mysteries, conspiracies and more secrets of the Holy Grail than Dan Brown could shake a lawsuit at. You can also expect to face enemies such as the Saracen, King Philip IV of France and the Inquisition. Presumably not the Spanish one.
The First Templar is down for a release in the first quarter of 2011.

Microsoft has readied Snoopy Flying Ace as tomorrow's Xbox Live Arcade offering.
This dogfighter (oho!) is fast and simple and cartoony. Two players can fly together to put an end to the evil Red Baron's desires, either on the same console or online.
Better, up to 16 people can take to the skies in online free-for-alls, choosing either a pilot from the Snoopy canon or their own Xbox Live Avatar.
Aeroplanes can be customised too - tweaked with weird weaponry too wacky for real life.
Snoopy Flying Ace costs 800 Microsoft Points (£6.80/€9.60).

Treyarch's Josh Olin has said that multiplayer in Call of Duty: Black Ops was underway so early that the single-player guys have been using multiplayer assets to speed up production.
"We've had a dedicated team working on that since day one," Olin, who is Treyarch's community manager, told IGN about the online side of the game.
"Let me put it in perspective for you. We had multiplayer started and up and running in the project so early that some single-player levels actually are being built around multiplayer maps that we had in production.
"So it's not the other way around," he said, referring to the accepted wisdom that multiplayer tends to follow single-player. "It's not single-player maps being brought into multiplayer, it's multiplayer being brought into single-player, so that's how ahead of the game they were."
Call of Duty: Black Ops puts players in a team of deniable operatives doing Special Forces business during the Cold War. It takes place in Vietnam and other areas around the globe.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is due out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 9th November.

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...ZZiyfULSSz.php
Blackaddr released Xbox 360 SMC I/O Config Utility v0.1 Alpha:
[QUOTE]
DESCRIPTION:
This is a simple utility to reconfigure output pins on the SMC that are used to execute the JTAG transaction to the GPU. The utility only supports decrypted SMC files which already contain the JTAG hack code. It is used to research and fix problems caused by sharing SMC output pins, or caused by the bit timing of the JTAG data.
FEATURES:
* Basic Mode:
-Change only the TMS signal to use AUD_CLAMP pin. Fixes many issues, a good starting point for testing.
* Advanced Mode (for researchers):
-Change the TMS and TDI signals to any general purpose I/O pin on the SMC.
-Change the TMS lead-in delay. This determines how long between a TMS logic change and the assertion of TCLK.
-Change the TCLK period. The bit rate is controlled by changing the delay between TCLK level transitions.
USEFUL INFO:
* The purpose of this utility is to help fix and research boot issues caused by SMC I/O sharing or JTAG bit timing. On non-Xenon consoles, there are no unused I/O available, so we have to borrow some from Microsoft.
* The original hack borrowed ARGON_DATA for TMS, which is the data line that controls the Ring of Light and RF board. This can cause weird issues with the controller and LED display (particularly Falcons) and E79 issues on Zephyr. The original hack also borrowed DB1F1 which is used for HDMI purposes(?) on the ANA/HANA chip. It could causes isses with setting up the output video, especially HDMI resulting in boot failures.
* At the time of this release, two new I/O have been found that are not critical to system boot. First is AUD_CLAMP. This signal is an control signal that mutes the output of the analog audio. It has no interaction with system boot and is an excellent replacement for TMS. The second I/O is TRAY_OPEN. It is a logic signal that tells the DVD drive to open or close. It does not interfere with boot, however on some DVD drives, the tray may eject on bootup, it depends on the mobo/drive combination. It can be useful for moving TDI if boot failures persist.
* Many issues seem to be resolved simply by moving the TMS signal from the RF header to the AUD_CLAMP.

Now sports fans will get to see Activision's weird-looking Little League World Series characters in high definition! The last two iterations of the kid-friendly baseball franchise have been exclusive to Wii and DS, but Activision has announced Little League World Series Baseball 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
"We felt it was time to finally bring the popular Little League series to gamers playing Xbox 360 and PlayStation(R)3," Activision Publishing's David Oxford said. "Little League(R) World Series Baseball 2010 is visually stunning and packed with tons of new content, while remaining an accessible pick-up-and-play game for the whole family."
Apparently, Activision also felt it was time to stop bringing the popular franchise to Wii and DS, as there is no mention at all of any version of the game other than the Xbox 360 and PS3. It'll be out on those two consoles in July.

Node21 (Team XeDev) released a new version of XM360, a tool running on homebrew 360s that will allow to organize, scan and unlock XBLA and DLC content.
What's new/fixed:
* Xm360 now includes a server component (xm360_server) that runs on the PC. Find it in the "server" directory of the archive.
* Be sure to define hdd1: in xm360server.cfg before using it.
* This server component when running, allows you to connect to it as if it is another 360 from within xm360. This allows you to centralize you content on a PC on your network.
* Unlike a regular 360, the server component automatically keeps its content.bin up-to-date when things are pushed to it
* I recommend pushing content to the server from xm360 to begin with to make absoultely certain that it creates the paths correctly on the PC
* xm360 now has very robust FTP job queuing, showing you what's in the queue, and the progress of each transfer right in the content list.
* Due to the fact that you may want to run the server on a port other than 21, XM360 itself now allows you to specify the port in the "Other XBOX" ftp config section. See XM360.cfg for details.
* Lots of minor fixes in XM360 itself

"Let’s be honest, Microsoft has done a bad job at promoting both its Zune HD product and the Zune brand itself. One reason most people say Microsoft jumped into the mp3 market was to compete with Apple and iTunes. Fast forward and Microsoft Zune is barely a whisper. Apple currently controls the mp3 market, Microsoft is not even in 2nd place. Sandisk holds that position. I’ve come up with a few suggestions that Ballmer needs to do to make Zune better"
A blogger by the handle of THEPHOENIX720 has posted five things that he feels Microsoft needs to do to make the Zune a success. And let’s not beat around the bush here, I think the Zune really is, from a sales standpoint, a failure. The technology of the platform is sound but Microsoft dropped every ball it could with it. THEPHOENIX720 is pretty much right on the money with his suggestions. The only problem is that Microsoft should have done everything he suggested YEARS ago.
Now it’s never too late to remake yourself or a product. Apple, in the past decade, has enjoyed a resurgence that no one can claim they saw coming. Microsoft made a huge blunder with Windows Vista only to completely recover with Windows 7. Companies and product lines can be salvaged. But Microsoft has to make an effort! Apple didn’t save itself only by making some good hardware. The iPod itself is a good MP3 player but their advertising campaign was perfect. Their advertising for their computers, iPhones, and iPad have all been right on the money.
Microsoft however couldn’t convince you to buy an umbrella in a downpour. I don’t know why that is. The other points about product synergy and pushing the Zune Pass all SEEM obvious. Yet, Microsoft has never followed through. The original promises of what the Zune could be are finally starting to come to fruition on the Zune HD but never really quite made it there.
In a way, I think Microsoft should go with his fifth option, which is to kill the Zune HD. Before you get too outraged, hear me out! Windows Phone 7 has Zune capability. The Kin has Zune capability. Clearly, Zune has finally become more than just about the Zune player. With the Zune available in multiple formats, Microsoft should do what they did with Vista and give us a "new" Zune. Then you can push the heck out of it. Not saying it would work but sometimes wrapping a good product in a new package lets you promote it in new ways. Microsoft doesn’t even measure on the market share meter here so what do they really have to lose?
What does anyone else think Microsoft can do to get the Zune back on track?

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce the spread of pirated Xbox 360 games and support the region's legitimate resellers, Microsoft Gulf today announced that UAE authorities confiscated over 29,000 pirated copies of Xbox 360 games in a series of 21 coordinated raids on reseller stores in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
In Abu Dhabi, the Ministry of Economy liaised with the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development to gain additional officers for assistance; enabling them to target a number of stores, and to conduct the raids simultaneously.
"The ramifications of piracy and the distribution of pirated goods will always negatively impact any economy and hinder growth. It does no justice to the businesses that are operating legitimately and complying with all regulatory and UAE laws," said Mohammed Ahmed Bin Abdul Aziz, Managing Director, UAE Ministry of Economy. "The Ministry, in collaboration with private rights holders such as Microsoft, will take all necessary actions to clamp down on piracy and the distribution of counterfeit products in the UAE."
In Sharjah, the store raids conducted by government authorities lead to the confiscation of pirated products and the arrest of 3 people who are currently facing criminal charges. When one store which is known as a major supplier of pirated games in the market was raided, approximately 25,000 pirated DVDs were seized. The pirated games were purportedly found on specially built and hidden shelves, which held neatly arranged bundles of 50 pirated DVDs.
