Halo: Reach's beta test has been more popular than Halo 3's, with more players logging in on day one than for the entirety of the Halo 3 beta.
That's according to Machinima (via Destructoid), which quotes the official Bungie stats in its latest video.
The first week of play on the Reach beta saw 14 million games played - over 29 years of game time - and 157 million kills.
The Halo: Reach beta test ends tomorrow - a day later than originally planned. "Our official plans as of now are to turn off the Reach beta on Thursday, 5/20 at 10AM PDT," Bungie's Brian Jarrard told Joystiq. That will be 6pm here in the UK.
Halo: Reach is due out this autumn, exclusively for Xbox 360.

News via http://www.zunethoughts.com/news/sho...nals-rant.html
Now that the Zune HD 64 is out, I’m ready to move up to the next generation of Zune devices. Not that there is anything at all wrong with my Zune 80. Quite the opposite really, my Zune 80 is trucking right along! But there is no denying that that beautiful OLED screen is calling my name. I’m also hoping that with Zune becoming part of the Windows Phone 7 OS, there is a chance we might see some meaningful applications released for it.
Unfortunately I can’t make the purchase for a few months. I’m out of the country right now and would have no easy way to get it. On top of that, I can’t even look at it online. International Zune fans, I fully understand your pain now. Microsoft doesn’t even let me look at the Zune Originals site from Australia. I find that ridiculous.
I was in Baltimore last week though for a few days and discovered that maybe Microsoft is hiding the Zune Originals site out of embarrassment. I wasn’t there long enough to consider a purchase but I could at least look at the options on Originals. Maybe I don’t remember very well but I could have sworn there used to be a lot more options than there are now.
Now there are about 30 artist series options, a few horrible video game options (really, they almost all suck), and the option to put the logo from your favorite MLS team on the back of your Zune. Really, Microsoft, we get MLS? I’m sure Microsoft is just trying to get whatever deals they can but sometimes less is more. A device that can be used almost only in the United States can be customized with a sport that no one cares about at all.
The color options were nice but the artwork was really just not very compelling at all. The whole Zune Originals idea is great but if the options are going to be so watered down, maybe Microsoft should just sell Zunes in different colors and do away with Originals all together.

Sega is about to give fans another reason to own a Virtual On arcade stick. A home version of Cyber Troopers Virtual On Force is being made for Xbox 360.
Famitsu has the scoop and mentions two on two co-op battles over Xbox Live. Offline, four players can rumble in a split screen mode. Cyber Troopers Virtual On Force also has single player missions and over a dozen robots to play with. Yeah, Temjin is on the lis.
While Sega hasn’t abruptly ended their countdown, we’re betting this is the “next-360action” game they have been counting down to.

Mafia 2 designer, Alex Cox has discussed his game's 'aim for realism', which seems to have affected a number of game features in the open-world crime spree.
"Our design rule is, 'two shots to kill baddies', whereas Vito can take four or five hits. That's not much punishment, and ties in with our aim for realism," Cox told Xbox World 360.
Not only will you want to avoid getting into a shootout, you'll also want to obey the speed limit. What kind of a game is this?
"We really strived for a persistent police presence," continued Cox.
"You'll be able to upgrade your favourite ride. The downside being that if the cops recognize your license plates your vehicle can become persistently wanted."
"It's meant to make players care about their driving. You can even run out of petrol if you drive the same car for too long, so you need to fill her up at the station."
May we suggest a mini-game where you have to stop the pump on exactly 20 quid?

Star Wars The Force Unleashed is the pick of the bunch coming to Xbox Live's Games on Demand this Wednesday.
Players will take on the rather nerve-wracking but ultimately badass role of Darth Vadar's apprentice and utilise the power of The Force to full effect as they telekinetically control enemies and objects to cause maximum destruction.
Also coming to XBL this week is Top Spin 3, which requires you to time shots perfectly with full control of the right analogue stick if you want to find yourself facing the likes of Federer, Nadal or the Williams sisters at Wimbledon.
Too Human completes the Games on Demand entry this week where you'll take on the role of the cybernetic god Baldur who must defend mankind from an invasion of ancient war machines.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed during the Q&A section of the publisher's recent financial earnings call that the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the first game to add a multiplayer component to the series, would undergo a period of beta testing. "We have not announced exactly the date yet," he said, "but yes, we will have a beta test."
Guillemot promised that more specifics would be announced at E3. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is scheduled to arrive during Holiday 2010.

Square Enix appears to be considering Final Fantasy Versus XIII for release on Xbox 360.
The E3 2006 promise of two new Final Fantasy games for PlayStation 3 apparently had small print.
"We'll be looking into it internally until right before the formal announcement," said Yoichi Wada of an Xbox 360 version, speaking to investors following today's annual earnings report (via VG247).
That "formal announcement" could be at E3 next month, although game director Tetsuya Nomura cast doubt on this in February, revealing that Square Enix had decided to revise the game's map.
What we know of FF Versus XIII so far has been gleaned from showy CG cinematics. But with Final Fantasy XIII now out of the door, the PR coast should be clear.

Nintendo and Sony have clear plans for the oncoming 3D wave. What’s Microsoft doing about it?
“We’re watching the situation, the Xbox 360 itself already supports 3D games, so preparations are made,” explained Takashi Sensui, General Manager of Microsoft’s Xbox division in Japan in an interview with Nikkei’s TrendyNet.
When asked about the Nintendo 3DS, Sensui had an optimistic reply. “I think it is an extremely good experiment. 3D games are suited for the play environment of portable machines. It’s relatively easy to realize a 3D environment space because the viewpoint and screen distance are nearly fixed.”

A BioWare representative announced on the developer's forums (login required) that one of the most ambiguous, open-to-interpretation game updates we've ever encountered launched this morning for the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 2. Sure, a few of the changes included in the patch are straightforward, such as a fix for a game-crashing error that would occur due to DLC incompatibility and the removal of another glitch that would allow the game's more sinister players to get infinite skill points using a simple menu exploit.
However, some changes are far more enigmatic -- particularly the suggestion that "scanning for minerals has been optimized." What does that even mean? Is the mining minigame now faster? Do you get more minerals with each probe? Can we now listen to phat beats while performing this otherwise mind-numbing task? We'll just have to download the patch to find out.

Microsoft's Major Nelson blog confirms that Metal Slug XX, a revamped version of the classic Metal Slug 7, will be released on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday.
Metal Slug, in case you've missed out on its glory over the years, is an utterly mental 2D platform shooter known for its incredibly detailed and well-animated 2D and ball-breaking difficulty.
The 360 version will add to the original seven-level campaign with a new Combat School mode, which boast 70 mini game-style missions to complete, and it adds two new characters to the original four, Ralf and Clark, from SNK's King of Fighters series.
The only set back? It costs 1200 points, which is a little steep, but if you've got the points to splash you will be getting one of the best 2D shooters in existence. Get it here.
Also on XBLA this Wednesday is Aqua, a fantasy naval shooter which has you "destroy enemies on, above, and below the water surface, and unlock new ship types, weapons, and upgrades to enhance your ship as you progress through an entertaining story-driven campaign accompanied by beautiful hand-drawn comic sequences." That's 800 MS points and can be nabbed here.

Microsoft's Aaron Greenburg has dismissed earlier reports of Natal's £130/$200 pricing as "purely speculation".
Microsoft's motion sensing camera picked up a £130/$200 price tag on a number of Swedish retailers earlier - a rather steep ask compared to the sub-$100 expected price.
But it seems Sweden doesn't know something the rest of us don't, with Greenburg telling Planet Xbox 360: "Our retail partners are not yet aware of details on pricing for 'Project Natal' and pre-order placeholders are purely speculation."
He added: "We will share price details with partners and the public as we get closer to launch, but are working hard to bring 'Project Natal' to consumers this holiday, and it will work with every Xbox 360."

It appears tension is growing in the BioShock 2 community over players' inability to play the new maps in the recently-released Metro Map Pack DLC.
According to reports, players are finding that they're rarely able to get into a multiplayer match in one of the new maps because of a lack of separate playlist for those who've purchased the DLC.
Therefore if even one player out of a possible 10 (six minimum) doesn't have the DLC a new map will not be chosen. And even when all players are DLC-equipped, the matchmaking system still picks randomly from all available levels - there are six new maps and 10 old ones.
K community manager Elizabeth Tobey responded: "We didn't want to assume everyone would have the maps, and we didn't want to split the player base (because in previous weeks, we'd already established that sucks.) So DLC maps are in public map rotation if everyone has the content, and otherwise base maps are used - that way you can play with your friends even if they don't have the DLC content. If you want to only play DLC maps, however, private matches are the best way to go about that - that way you can use only those maps."
That's rubbish though, because Achievements/Trophy rewards, as well as ranking, are disabled for private matches.
DLC has been a touchy subject for BioShock 2 players, after a suspiciously small download file size - 108kb on Xbox 360, and just 24kb on PC - lead fans to believe that the Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack DLC was actually already on the disc, and that 2K was charging for the unlock code.

Ubisoft will release a new retail version of Assassin’s Creed II in June.
Dubbed the Complete Edition, this SKU includes a full copy of the game and both DLC expansions: The Battle of Forli and Bonfire of the Vanites.
It also includes three Templar Secret locations that were previously only available in the special Assassin’s Creed II: Black Edition, according to Play.com.
The Complete Edition will only be available for Xbox 360 and PS3, and will be released in the UK on June 4th.
Ubisoft has already revealed the next entry in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, which follows on from the story of Assassin’s Creed II. The game is expected on shelves by the end of the year.

Developer Treyarch believes Call of Duty: Black Ops will finally put the studio on level pegging with IP pace-setter Infinity Ward.
"We've taken some creative risks," studio boss Mark Lamia told Official Xbox Magazine (scanned by WePlayCOD and picked up by VG247). "We want to do something different than we've done before.
"It's time," Lamia added. "We want the game to speak for itself."
Those creative risks Lamia mentioned included letting players pilot helicopters and empty rounds of missiles (the series has previously limited players to manning a mounted mini-gun).
Other vehicles will return but "not in the way you remember them from [World at War]," according to the preview.
In Black Ops, you're an elite soldier on a hush-hush mission with orders to get the job done under any circumstances. The magazine preview mentioned that you will come into contact with North Vietnamese troops at some point.
Another headline new feature is four-player co-operative play. Treyarch revealed that there will be dedicated co-operative servers to power this.
Multiplayer will of course return, and Treyarch appears keen to gain ground in this area. Internally multiplayer was up and running very early, and feedback from World at War has been fastidiously researched.
Matchmaking has apparently been altered to make playing with friends easier, and character creation will use kit and perks to offer more customisation than before.
Treyarch changed the subject when OXM asked about a wave-based Nazi zombie mode.
A multiplayer beta is being "considered".
Last week USA Today took us through a similar opening portion of Black Ops. Details spilled from that preview include the double-viewpoint storyline, revelation of a crossbow weapon and a spot of cliff-hanging.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is due for release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 9th November.

A number of retail listings emerging from Sweden over the weekend – including GAME – have pegged a KR 1,400 price tag on a standalone SKU of Microsoft’s Natal motion controller – that translates to around £133.
As Kotaku points out, early retail listings are never accurate measure of price, though the fact that the prediction is so much higher than previous estimates will surely raise eyebrows.
Last November MCV revealed that sources had pinned a sub-£50 price for the device, reflecting Microsoft’s desire to get the device plugged in to as many Xbox 360s as possible.
Bundling of the device with consoles has also been predicted this Q4, along with possible discounting of the base Xbox 360 hardware.

According to a report on ME Gamers, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption has become the latest game to be banned in the traditionally sensitive territory.
The claims come from a retailer in the region. When asked for confirmation, both Rockstar and distributor Red Entertainment declined to comment.
The game joins a growing list of titles banned from release in recent months. The likes of Heavy Rain, Darksiders, God of War and, a little while back, Grand Theft Auto have all encountered problems thanks to content that is either religiously sensitive or, for want of a better word, rude.
EA pre-empted any possible ban by deciding not to release Dante’s Inferno in the region.
Why Red Dead would succumb to such a decision is unclear for the time being.

Rockstar may be preparing to steal the show at next month’s E3 Expo in LA with the first news on next-gen sequel Grand Theft Auto V.
That’s according to EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnish, who made the prediction to Games Informer.
“I think we’re going to hear about another Grand Theft Auto,” he stated. “I think there won’t be any playable stuff. I think they’ll give you some type of teaser, because we do think that a year from then in 2011 we’re going to see another Grand Theft Auto.”
Divnich also added that he thinks it’s unlikely Microsoft will go one better than it did in 2006 and shell out for total platform exclusivity. Nor, does he believe, that Sony will try and regain one its most cherished exclusives of yesteryear.
“I don't foresee Microsoft or Sony attempting to obtain any type of exclusivity with the next Grand Theft Auto,” he outlined.
“Microsoft paid a lot of money for exclusivity on the downloadable content for GTA IV, which unfortunately did little to move consoles for Microsoft.
“Back in 2004, the Grand Theft Auto was a huge brand, but only relative to the other brands that existed at the time. While the GTA brand is certainly bigger now than it was five years ago, others have emerged to reach similar levels of success, such as Call of Duty or Guitar Hero. In other words, if Sony gets an exclusive deal on GTA V, it would do little to disrupt Microsoft's ability to move hardware, and vice versa.”
