Elite creator and Frontier founder David Braben has come to the defence of Kinect against those claiming it is hampered by latency issues - telling CVG that the device enables "very fresh" experiences.
Responding to CVG's opinion 'Kinect: Lag? What lag?', Braben agreed that the games media had made too much of perceived latency issues surrounding the device.
Frontier has created Kinectimals for the camera-based peripheral - a family-friendly big cat simulator, which has been dubbed 'Kinect's Nintendogs'.
"I agree that the lag factor has been overplayed," he told CVG. "As I think you hint at in your piece, what Kinect enables feels very fresh too.
"There has been a tendency in our business to knock most new technologies - apart from better graphics perhaps. This is no different."
Early videos of Kinect showed very noticeable latency between the actions of the player and what appeared on the screen in front of them - most notoriously when Jonathan Ross tested the device in February.
However, Microsoft promised that this lag would be greatly reduced by the time the device launches in November.

The host of Xbox Live quiz game 1 vs. 100 has given his reaction to the news there will be no season 3.
"Yeah... Bummer," he told Giant Bomb. "I certainly hope to get a chance to play with Xbox again, but I have no idea what it's up to next... The Live platform is so cool and the streaming content is just way ahead of the curve, so I gotta assume it's all a part of a bigger picture. I'm sure they are plotting something rad," said Cashman.
"As for how I'm taking the news of 1 vs. 100 going away? Well... I've always been dramatic," he added, referring to his YouTube response to the news.
1 vs. 100 launched in the UK a year ago. It let you answer questions and win stuff from the comfort of your own home, but now you'll have to settle for Foxy Bingo instead.

July 19th, 2010, 19:02 Posted By: wraggster
Electronic Arts' sports franchise Tiger Woods PGA Tour may have suffered permanent sales damage due to the star's public infidelities.
The latest in the series, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, was released in June and suffered a 68 per cent drop in US sales compared to last year's iteration, which was released in the same month.
Although last year the Wii version of the game shipped with the Wii MotionPlus accessory, Doug Creutz of Cowan & Company labelled the 86 per cent decline in Wii sales of PGA Tour 11 as "particularly catastrophic."
"Although this is probably due in part to the fact that last year's version shipped bundled with Nintendo's new MotionPlus controller, we are concerned that Woods' scandal woes may have permanently damaged the sales potential of what we believe to be EA's third most important sports franchise, behind Madden and FIFA," he wrote in a note to investors.
At the start of the year, EA Sports president Peter Moore denied the franchise had been impacted by revelations of Wood's sex life, although that was before the release of the latest console game and Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online.
Looking at other EA titles released in May and June, Creutz pointed to Skate 3, with sales down 40 per cent compared to the first two month's of Skate 2, and the sale of 82,000 units of Green Day: Rock Band as the reason for reducing full year revenue estimates for the publisher from $538 million to $475 million for the first financial quarter of 2011.

Microsoft Game Studios creative director, Peter Molyneux, has toldGamesIndustry.biz that he believes there is still plenty of headroom in the Xbox 360 in terms of technical power.
Speaking in an interview at last week's Develop conference in Brighton he explained that although the console has now been on the market for over five years, teams - including Molyneux's own Lionhead studio, working on Fable III - are continuing to push the hardware in new directions.
In answer to a question about whether production efficiencies improved as studios became more familiar with a platform's architecture, he responded: "You'd think that would be true, but the problem is that with great knowledge comes great opportunity - and there's your problem.
"If you know the GPU so intimately well, you're not going to say: 'Oh, that's not any problem any more.' You're going to push it harder, and that's what we do.
"The demo I've shown of Fable III - those levels are four times bigger, and we've got true dynamic lighting. We didn't do any of that before, but if we hadn't done that our problems would be so much simpler... but we push ourselves, over and over again.
"There's always this curious thing that happens with consoles - you tend to find that the most spectacular looking games and tech comes after the end of the generation. We're still yet to discover where the 360 can go in graphical resolution. We're still inventing stuff."

The popular iPhone and PC casual strategy game Plants vs Zombies will be heading to Xbox 360 this September.
Consumers will be able to purchase a boxed edition of the game or download it from Xbox Live for 1,200 Microsoft Points – around £10. PopCap also confirmed retail versions of Zuma and Peggle will hit stores later this year.
Plants vs Zombies on Xbox 360 boasts seven game modes including a range of features exclusive to the console. Gamers have access to 21 mini-games, two multiplayer modes – co-op and versus – and 12 unlockable achievements.
The news comes following suggestions that the Xbox 360 port would include a previously unannounced co-op option.
“With a ton of new features and content exclusive to the XBLA version, we've pulled out all the stops to both expand and optimise this adaptation for a hardcore gaming audience,” said PopCap’s head of worldwide studios Ed Allard.
“The two new multiplayer modes allow gamers to work cooperatively to defeat hordes of invading zombies, or go head-to-head in a true 'Plants vs Zombies' challenge.”
A fixed release date for the game has not yet been announced. PopCap says a game of the year edition will also arrive on PC and Mac later this year – bundled with a zombie figurine.

Bungie has revealed the Armory feature in their upcoming, and supposedly final, Halo title - Halo Reach.
While the studio doesn't delve into too much detail, a Bungie.net post reveals a cool new armour (armor) type and shows off all the various parts that can be customised. You can check 'em out around this very page.
The Bungie.net team also revealed an image showing all the items that will be 'visible' to players on Day 1.
Unlike in Halo 3, ranking up in Reach is achieved through a credit system - as the player progresses through the ranks more customisation content becomes available. Additional items become available based on the purchases players make.
Spartans in Reach seem far more customisable than in previous games with numerous attachments and base variants available, provided you have the credits.
Bungie seems to be kicking the Halo: Reach hype machine into gear, they recently revealed the achievements for the game and also announced a teased the collectors edition of the game.

The Xbox 360 S has enjoyed a bumper launch in the UK, with sales monitor GfK Chart-Track stating that the machine has “achieved the biggest launch in the UK for a ‘revised’ home console”.
The slimmed down unit arrived in the UK on Friday carrying an RRP of £199.99. Several shops opened their doors at midnight to welcome its arrival.
“[The Xbox 360 S] surpasses the launches of both PS2 Slim and PS3 Slim and recording over two days around the same as the original Xbox 360’s launch sales total back in week 48, 2005.
“This is even more impressive when you take into account that the original Xbox 360 was launched across two versions (Pro and Core).”
Upon its debut in the UK last year, the PS3 Slim sold 40,000 units in its first week on sale – a number that represented a week-on-week increase of 999 per cent.

Combined sales of the old Elite, Pro and Arcade models of Xbox 360 in North America were higher than those of the new 250GB 'S' console in June, according to new data.
Microsoft's redesigned console accounted for 40 per cent of the 451,700 Xbox 360 units it sold in the month, said Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter in a note to investors on Friday.
However, nearly as many sales - 35 per cent - were of the inexpensive Arcade model, which Microsoft reduced to a clearance price of $150.
Wallmart also offered $50 gift cards with each purchase of an Arcade console, effectively reducing the price of the console down to $100.
Sales of the Pro and Elite models, which also received a $50 price-cut, rounded off the remaining overall sales figures.
Amazon.de recently listed a cheaper Xbox Slim Arcade console bundle which has a 4 GB memory capacity.
The Xbox 360 Slim hardware revision has proved very popular amongst consumers, demand has been very high and the launch of the console is currently the biggest ever launch in the UK for a "revised" home console.

If the above picture is to be believed, it looks like Microsoft's Zune Pass is gearing up to make its UK debut. An across-the-pond tipster via LiveSide apparently stumbled upon (and was able to successfully score the 14-day trial) a Subscription page with pricing tiers. In addition to the tryout period, there were also options for a £8.99 (about $13.74) one-month pass and £26.97 / $41.23 for three. Further details are just barely hinted at in the sidebar, but if it's anything like the US progenitor, we're looking at an all-you-can download music service and ten DRM-free MP3s each month, playable on Windows, Xbox 360 (soon), Zune devices (still not available outside US), and Windows Phone 7. We know Microsoft is planning to move its "challenging" music service into every country its phones will venture, but that little tidbit doesn't absolve this image of scrutiny. Try as we might, our UK editors are unable to find this screen anywhere. According to the original tipster, even though he has access to the trial, he still can't use it. We'll keep digging and will let you know what we find.

Let's face it, the New Xbox Experience isn't exactly "new" any more, but it looks like Microsoft may be getting close to another complete revision. If a set of purportedly authentic images that surfaced on Logic Sunrise (and have since been pulled at Microsoft's request) are any indication, it appears that the Xbox 360 dashboard will be tweaked to match the appearance of the new Family Center component that Microsoft recently announced (and is set to launch in November). Those changes include a new horizontal menu system instead of the current slanted design, and some other more minor tweaks like smaller text for the menu options. The image above may well not be the final dashboard, however, considering that some of the other leaked images made reference to Natal instead of Kinect, suggesting that they're from an older build.

Proving once again that in this world it's more important what you look like than what you do, the Xbox 360 has cruised to the title of best-selling console in June on the back of a sexy physical redesign. The latest numbers from NPD show that Microsoft shifted 451,700 units in the US, which ousts the Wii's tally of 422,500 and comfortably dwarfs the PS3's 304,800. Still, if Sony wants any consolation it need only look back to the results of its own console Slimmification last year -- US sales were said to have tripled in the immediate aftermath of the new SKU's release. So Microsoft might have a little bit of catching up to do yet, and let's not forget that the king of all hardware sales remains the DS, which somehow managed to sell more than half a million devices in June, in spite of the whole world and its dog already owning one.

Singer Joss Stone has revealed she plays "a posh version of Paris Hilton" in the new James Bond game, Blood Stone, due this autumn.
She'll be Bond girl Nicole Hunter, a socialite 'it girl' who works with diamonds. She found the role "kind of amazing". "It's a bit crazy to be a Bond girl," shared Stone at an Activision press event attended by Christian Donlan for Eurogamer.
Stone had a full body scan for the game. "It's mad," she recalled. "It took, like, all day."
The British (but you'd be forgiven for thinking American) singer has also written a song for the game in collaboration with David Stewart. It's called "I'll Take it All" and "it's awesome", according to Stone.
Blood Stone contains a mixture of third-person, cover-based shooting and vehicle pursuits. Vehicles, in this case, being cars and speedboats. Donlan was shown a car chase that required a target be rammed off the road, before cutting to a boat chase in Athens harbour with explosions galore.
The game also features a focus mode where time can be slowed to accommodate head shots.
Blood Stone will boast an entirely original story written by Bond screenwriter Bruce Feirstein. This follows 007 as he jets around the world in pursuit of a terrorist suicide group. There's a focus on the diamond trade, too. Settings include Athens, Istanbul, Monaco and Bangkok.
Project Gotham Racing, The Club, Geometry Wars and Blur developer Bizarre Creations is making Blood Stone. PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 are the chosen platforms, plus an original DS version by n-space. Richard Jacques is doing the music.
Daniel Craig is voicing James Bond and Judi Dench will be M.
There will be "several" multiplayer modes for up to 16 people that involve agents battling mercenaries.

While Microsoft continues to remain quiet on official pricing for motion control system Kinect, US retailer Walmart has begun taking preorders, asking $199 for a bundle of game, peripheral and a $30 gift card.
The incomplete list of games on offer includes Kinect Sports, Joy Ride, Kinectimals and Dance Central. Microsoft's own retail site has listed the Kinect peripheral on its own at $150, but said it is only a placeholder price. Solid confirmation is expected at Gamescom in August.
There is concern from publishers that the price of Kinect may be too high to drive uptake amongst the casual consumer, with Activision's Thomas Tippl suggesting the company may not invest heavily in Kinect-based games.
Sony's PlayStation Move controller, which many regard as a rival to Microsoft's Kinect, will cost €39.99/$49.99/¥3980, with the Navigational controller available separately for €29.99/$29.99/¥2980, and other bundles also available.

July 17th, 2010, 22:43 Posted By: wraggster
Hello Games chose to release Joe Danger via Sony's PlayStation Network because the team regarded Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade as a "slaughterhouse" for small developers.
Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton today, Hello Games' Sean Murray said that while the top ten titles on XBLA sell very well and have high profiles amongst consumers, a significant proportion of games sell less than 25,000 units on the service, and quickly disappear after release.
"Why choose PSN? It was the only way we could self-publish," said Murray. " XBLA is kind of a slaughterhouse for smaller developers. There are games that do amazingly well. But there's two titles released every week and a lot of those are falling in that 25,000 or less category."
Murray's session included his own stats collated from Xbox Live Arcade, which he presented with the caveat that there were not official figures, but he believed them to be realistic.
Of titles on XBLA that were self-published without the assistance of third-parties, Murray claimed 47 per cent sold less than 25,000 copies, 23 per cent sold around 100,000 copies, 13 per cent 200,000 copies and 17 per cent more than 200,000.
Murray revealed that Joe Danger broke-even on its first day of release on PSN and sold 50,000 copies in its first week.
Console services are ripe opportunities for independent developers, said Murray, as big third-party publishers regard them as "the ginger step-child" of the digital downloads market and are not willing to experiment with releasing creative games in the space.
"It's not to say publishers are shit, but small studios are amazing in this space," stressed Murray.
He also revealed some of the knock back statements Hello Games received from early talks with publishers for Joe Danger, including: "Name me one popular game with motorbikes", "we want games that are less about fun right now" and "can Joe be a monkey? We like monkeys".
Finally, he wouldn't discuss the next project from the four-man team, but said that if the company can double, "what we could do with eight people could be ****ing amazing, basically."
