News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...VlsIbDTYSn.php
News from French Xbox website logic-sunrise.com tells us the French retailer Micromania is now checking each Xbox360 with a Halo3 "DVD+R DL RW" (whatever that is lol) disc before buying it back from customers and putting it on the 2nd-hand market.
According to their source at Micromania this discs is coming from Microsoft itself (!?). This is a quick test to see if the DVD FW has been flashed with a custom firmware - and would avoid the 2nd-hand buyer to be banned at a later time not knowing his FW was flashed. Of course you can still flash your DVD FW back to stock FW before selling it Wouldn't really detect already-banned consoles either, but I'll assume they do a different check for that.
If other shops out there received a similar disc or got instructions from MS about how to detect flashed DVD FWs and banned consoles for 2nd-hand 360s, feel free to let me know xantium /AT/ xbox-scene /DOT/ com

Keiji Inafune, renowned game creator for Capcom, has said Mega Man Universe aims to "unite all Mega Man fans together in one place".
His comments - made to IGN at Comic-Con - suggest a strong online multiplayer component.
Inafune also liberally hinted at a character creation system for the downloadable PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade game.
"We wanted to preserve as much as we can of the classic 8-bit Mega Man look and feel, while allowing players to project their own view of Mega Man," he said.
"We wanted to create a platform where players can play as their favourite version of Mega Man, or maybe another Capcom character, or something completely different."
"Mega Man Universe is going to be a great game," Inafune added.
In closing, Infanue teasingly quipped that Mega Man Universe wasn't all the Mega Man Capcom has planned.
"There are other things going on with Mega Man. This is a big year for me. You haven't heard the last of Mega Man announcements for the future," he said.
Mega Man Universe was announced earlier this month. "When fans finally get to see it, I believe they'll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true," promised Inafune at the time.

Bungie has unveiled two new modes for Halo: Reach at Comic-Con. Forge World is a huge, customisable landscape for the game's Forge map editor, while Versus Firefight allows players to play against each other as both Spartans and Elites in the previously co-op-only mode.
You can find basic details of both in Microsoft's press release.
Forge World, demonstrated in Bungie's video below and previewed in detail by IGN, is a new setting for the Forge map editor that uses the new Forge 2.0 toolset. Set on a Halo ring, Forge World features five game maps melded into a single contiguous space and allows eight players (four in split-screen) to fly from one to the other to create, edit and play. The Forge 2.0 tools include UI improvements, snap rotation and custom physics.
Bungie's made several maps with Forge World that will ship with Halo: Reach, including remakes of the classic Blood Gulch and Ascension maps called Hemorrhage and Pinnacle.
Versus Firefight, meanwheile, pits a team of two Covenant Elite players, with AI support, against two Spartan players trying to survive. According to IGN's write-up, killing a player Elite grants a Spartan a bonus life and a score boost. Elites don't score, but have infinite lives. At the end of a round, players swap sides, the winning side being the one that racks up the most points while playing as Spartans.
Kotaku reports that Bungie also showed off a new vehicle for the game: a forklift truck.
Halo: Reach is released on 14th September worldwide alongside a special custom 360.

Microsoft has a limited edition Halo Reach Xbox 360 S bundle planned, which seemingly appeared prematurely on the official Xbox site.
The bundle comes with a special silver console covered in Halo Reach-themed graphics on its case, a 250GB hard drive, plus two matching silver controllers and a copy of the game for $399. Halo Reach Tips took a snap (through the source link) of the Xbox.com post before it was briskly whipped offline.
If the console's anywhere near as sexy as the new silver Halo Reach controller, pictured (also via Halo Reach Tips), it'll be on our list of 'excessive but necessary' purchases come the release of the game on September 14.
A source has told Ars Technica to expect an official announcement later today.
UPDATE: It's official. The Xbox 360 Limited Edition Halo: Reach bundle will be available on September 14 when Halo: Reach launches.
Designed by Bungie, the bundle includes the newly designed Xbox 360, plus two limited edition Wireless Controllers and a standard edition copy of Halo:Reach.
The bundle will be available for £249 in the UK.

July 23rd, 2010, 15:30 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has revealed that it sold 10.3m Xbox 360 consoles in the year ending June 30th – down from the 11.2m it sold in the same period the year before.
Console unit sales were up in the quarter ending June, however. 1.5m were sold in the period compared to 1.2 in 2009. 10.3m were sold in the year, down from 11.2m in the year before. Lifetime sales have hit 41.7m units.
Note, though, the recent launch of the Xbox 360 S is likely to provide a significant boost in the current quarter and, if Microsoft’s plans come to fruition, for the rest of the year.
Looking at the Entertainment & Devices (which includes Microsoft’s Xbox operations) as a whole, the quarter actually brought a loss of $172m for EDD, though a profit of $679m was registered for the full year – up an incredible 529 per cent year-on-year. This was attributed in the main to decreased costs at the unit, most notably in manufacturing Xbox 360 consoles.
EDD revenue for the year hit $8.058bn – up by just $20m on the 12 months prior. Revenue for the quarter reached $1.6bn, up $300k on last year.
Microsoft’s overall numbers saw annual revenues of $62.5bn – up $4bn compared to 2009. Income increased by $4.2bn to $18.7bn. Net income for the quarter reached $4.52bn – a 48 per cent year-on-year increase. Strong sales of Windows 7 were the main driver of the numbers.
“This quarter’s record revenue reflects the breadth of our offerings and our continued product momentum,” chief financial officer Peter Klein stated. “The revenue growth, combined with our ongoing cost discipline, helped us achieve another quarter of margin expansion.”

July 23rd, 2010, 01:24 Posted By: wraggster
Don McCabe, the outspoken manager of UK independent retailer CHIPS, firmly believes that Kinect won't boost hardware sales for Microsoft.
"In some ways Microsoft has missed the boat," he told GamesIndustry.biz. "Over the last two years the casual market has been declining rapidly."
"I don't think it's going to add any new hardware sales. I spotted in their last response to a survey, they said it would lift hardware sales by 5 to 15 percent.
"I think that's bollocks," he added. "You lift it by one or two per cent and you've had a result."
McCabe thinks the £130 asking price for Kinect is too high, particularly when compared with Wii - and he's not convinced anyone's that bothered about Microsoft's new device to begin with.
"The pricing is immature to a certain degree," he said. "Consumers see it as just a catch-up with the Wii, but they don't see it as much of an improvement.
"When you see a new hardware product or a new peripheral, you normally see quite a response from the public. We're not seeing that, they're completely underwhelmed by it, really."
McCabe's certain that Microsoft is testing the water for a future generation of consoles. If Kinect flies, great; if it doesn't, "we'll still intergrate it in the next machine".
Mr CHIPS is convinced that hardware for Microsoft is just a "means" of getting people subscribed to Xbox Live.
Still, if Kinect does fly, McCabe will be happy, because like a boomerang the device is coming straight back.
"From our point of view, the more Microsoft things that are out there the better, because it's one of those things that people will buy, play it for a short time then trade it back in. So I think we'll make a good trade-in market on it," predicted McCabe.
There is no UK release date yet for Kinect, but there are various ways to buy it.

July 23rd, 2010, 00:09 Posted By: wraggster
Project Milo creator Peter Molyneux has admitted he finds it "insanely hard" to convince others of the validity of his new game ideas before they're realised.
The Lionhead boss told Eurogamer in an interview published elsewhere on the site that getting people to buy into his ideas is "a massive problem".
Molyneux has two games in the works: Xbox 360 and PC role-playing game Fable III, due out in October, and Kinect game Project Milo, which is currently without a release date.
Relationship sim Project Milo has endured a troubling time since it was unveiled at E3 2009.
Last week at the TEDGlobal Conference in Oxford Molyneux said Microsoft had no plans to release Milo & Kate, according to a BBC report.
A fortnight previous, Microsoft mouthpiece Aaron Greenberg said "right now it's not a game" before changing his mind, after which Molyneux waded in and said Greenberg's original comment was based on out-of-date information.
This week Greenberg told Eurogamer that there's still a chance that Project Milo will be released – but not this year.
"Where there's still a huge problem - a massive problem I have - not so much with Fable because Fable's a proven franchise now, but with this other thing we're working on, and anything new I come up with, it's getting people to see what you're trying to do, what you're trying to invent or create, before it's actually done," Molyneux told Eurogamer.
"That is insanely hard to do."
"The best analogy is if I had invented the bicycle. Let's say you've never seen a bicycle before, but you were funding me. I say, 'I've taken all your money and I've invented this thing. You sit on this saddle and you balance on two wheels and you go 16 miles an hour, and it's going to be the most universal mode of transport around the world'. You would look at me as if I was crazy.
"Even if you saw the bicycle, you'd still say, 'No way am I going to go on one of those.' It's not until you sit and ride the bicycle that you realise this idea is going to work. So often with big ideas, whether they're parts of a game, like in Fable III, or whether they're entire games, it's hard to get people to see the pictures in your head."

Ars Technica is reporting that Microsoft is on the verge of announcing a Halo: Reach Xbox 360 hardware bundle. The $399.99 package will contain a silver version of the new Xbox 360 S (equipped with a 250GB hard drive), a copy of the game (of course!) and two wireless controllers. The bundle was detailed by -- who else? -- the Ars Mole and would likely be released alongside the various retail editions of the game on September 14.
Further evidence of the Reach-branded hardware comes by way of Joystiq reader "killer rin," who sent us a link to this Xbox.com page (now removed), which had advertised a Reach-themed controller (captured above) for $60. The controller appears to reflect the design suggested in Ars' report.

Better refill your Zombrex prescription: Capcom is letting Dead Rising 2: Case Zero out of quarantine and into Xbox Live Arcade on August 31 -- the original release date of the full Dead Rising 2 game (that's now dated for September 28). Capcom has also released a new trailer for Dead Rising 2, which you'll find after the break.
Case Zero, a standalone experience, serves as a prologue to Dead Rising 2. Chuck Greene fights to escape the town of Still Creek and obtain the Zombrex he needs to keep his daughter Katey from coming down with a case of finding human flesh yummy.
The prologue won't take a bite out of your budget: Capcom is pricing the XBLA-exclusive Case Zero at 400 Microsoft Points ($5).

July 22nd, 2010, 23:14 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's pricing for motion control peripheral Kinect and the new premium Xbox 360 S model has left the company with plenty of room to cut prices early next year.
That's according to Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter, who said that the $299 price for the new 250GB Xbox suggests the SKU is "very profitable".
"The only meaningful difference between the Arcade and Standard Slim Xbox 360s is the inclusion of a 250GB hard drive, suggesting to us that Microsoft has at least $50 of room to cut price on the more expensive SKU," he told investors.
"While we don't expect a hardware price cut from Microsoft until next year, we think that pricing on the new arcade SKU is a signal that price is coming down next year."
With the 4GB 360 retailing for $199 in the US and bundled with the Kinect peripheral for only $100 more, Pachter suggested that Microsoft would be content to sell Kinect at less than its current $149 standalone price.
"This suggests to us that the company has room to cut the price of Kinect to $100, and we expect them to do so early next year."
He added that the $149 price for Kinect was too expensive, and only expects a small uptake by the hardcore games consumer.
"Our bias is that most core gamers will wait for pricing to come down, but that 5-10 per cent will buy it. That suggests 2 – 4 million standalone units by the end of March 2011."

SEGA has released a major new update for its online Xbox 360 role-player Phantasy Star Universe, and made the Ambition of the Illuminus expansion a free download.
The Guardians Advanced Content, an automatic update for subscribers, adds new missions, weapons and items, a new customisation system and an overhaul of the game's classes and skills.
The Guardians update requires the Ambition of the Illuminus expansion to work, so that add-on - which previously cost 800 Microsoft Points - is now free.
Phantasy Star Universe, the sequel to the much-loved Dreamcast game Phantasy Star Online, launched back in 2006. We didn't think it was that hot then. What do you reckon - is it worth a re-review in 2010? Is anyone out there still playing? Let us know in the comments.

CHIPS joint MD Don McCabe has claimed consumers are "underwhelmed" by Kinect.
The independent retailer boss told GamesIndustry.biz this morning that he thinks "the pricing is immature to a certain degree. Consumers see it as a just a catch-up with the Wii, but they don't see it as much of an improvement.
"When you see a new hardware product or a new peripheral, you normally see quite a response from the public. We're not seeing that, they're completely underwhelmed by it really."
However, Martyn Gibbs, managing director of GAME Group UK, was more optimistic. "Kinect is a fantastic piece of technology and we believe that once people actually try it for themselves, they will understand the full scope and value of what it offers them – both as a gaming experience and an entertainment interface," he said in a statement released to GamesIndustry.biz.
McCabe, though, seemed to think Microsoft is braced for the motion controller to struggle. "This is more about things that can be integrated into the next hardware. I think it's 'stick it out there, see if it sells, if it doesn't sell we'll still integrate it in the next machine.'
"I think Microsoft are doing quite well at the moment, they're quite profitable, they're quite chilled. If they can get the Xbox Live figures a little bit higher, get more people connected, that's where they're income's going to come from. Hardware is just a means of getting people onto Live and paying through that sort of scenario."
Pointing out that he expected some sales from curious existing Xbox owners, he felt that "It's not all negative, but I think in some ways Microsoft have missed the boat. Over the last two years the casual market has been declining rapidly.
"I don't think it's going to add any new hardware sales. I spotted in their last response to a survey, they said it would lift hardware sales by 5 to 15 percent. I think that's bollocks. You lift it by 1 or 2 per cent and you've had a result."
Where he was more positive about Kinect was in the importance the struggling retail sector could play in exposing people to it. "Shops effectively will become demonstration units, there should be some sort of price discrepancy to reflect that, whether it'll be in some funding or what have you."
Both retailers, however, claimed that Kinect may be useful for the ever-contentious trade-in market. While he was not willing to reveal its own pricing for Kinect, Gibbs did state that GAME and Gamestation would "be offering a great range of trade-in offers to deliver great value options for our customers."
McCabe came to it from the other direction, arguing that "From our point of view, the more Microsoft things that are out there the better because I think it's one of those things that people will buy, play it for a short time then trade it back in. So I think we'll make a good trade-in market on it."
GamesIndustry.biz has also contacted Amazon.co.uk and ShopTo.Net for comment, who have declined to respond as yet.

Excited by some of the possibilities Kinect offers for non-casual games? Then it looks like you might have a bit of a wait in store. Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft's VP for Interactive Entertainment in Europe, Chris Lewis, went to some length to point out that Microsoft isn't ignoring core gamers, but would only go as far as to say that non-casual, "hybrid" games that use both Kinect and a standard controller would likely become available "over the coming 18 months or so." Not many more details beyond that, unfortunately, but Lewis did divulge a bit of UK news, saying that sales went up "1,000 percent week-over-week with an 84 per cent market share" following the release of the new, redesigned Xbox 360.
