A Microsoft UK rep has defended the £129.99 price tag on the Kinect motion sensor for Xbox 360, pointing out that a single unit delivers the complete multiplayer experience.
"The camera tracks six people - with two active gamers - you don't have to buy anything else," group marketing manager Brett Siddons told TechRadar. "I'll let you do the maths, but when you say Nintendo Wii or PlayStation Move you buy this and this, even for a two player game."
"What do you need and what do actually have to spend for a two player game for this device versus that device?" asked Siddons. "You actually find that [Kinect] is very competitively priced."
TechRadar points out that to buy a full PlayStation Move set-up for two players - consisting of a £49.99 bundle of Move and PlayStation Eye, £39.99 for a second Move controller and £29.99 each for two Navigation controllers - would cost £150.
Update: Sony has clarified the pricing of Move, pointing out that additional Move controllers will cost £34.99 and sub-controllers £24.99. So the above bundle would cost £135, not £150. It has also stressed that the sub-controllers are optional and can be substituted with a Dual Shock controller.

Ubisoft has announced that air-combat sim HAWX 2 will have an adversarial, local and online multiplayer mode for up to eight players.
The mode, which we were lucky enough to play at the recent hands-on event where we also got to play the single-player and co-op campaign, will feature six different mission types and a choice of any of the game's 32 pilotable aircraft.
The level we experienced was a mountainous valley studded with AA emplacements, radar dishes and tanks. It was a straight-up team deathmatch where points were scored for eliminating the enemy team's land or air forces.
Brilliantly, crashing at mach-2 because you're rubbish at discerning the difference between sky and ground results in a 'death by natural causes' message - presumably taking direction from the US armed forces book of disingenuous phraseology.
Ideally, teams will be formed of planes which fulfil different roles across the combat spectrum, from air interception to ground engagement - allowing teams to function as complete combat units.
Multiplayer comes in addition to the campaign, free-flight, arcade and survival modes, all of which are playable in co-op with up to four players.

In less than seven weeks, the epic battle for humanity’s survival will begin with the launch of the most anticipated game of 2010, “Halo: Reach.” To prepare the millions of fans worldwide awaiting the prequel to the blockbuster “Halo” trilogy, Bungie and Microsoft today released a stunning new trailer that offers a glimpse of the heroic themes and non-stop action in the most ambitious campaign in “Halo’s” history. Featuring a stirring sample of the original score by famed “Halo” composer Marty O’Donnell, the breathtaking trailer showcases several dramatic sequences from the game, including the Covenant invasion of the planet Reach and Noble Team’s effort to take the fight from the planet’s surface to space.
The debut of the new campaign trailer follows a slew of exciting “Halo: Reach” announcements at Comic-Con last week, including the world premiere of two brand new multiplayer experiences in “Halo: Reach”: Forge World and Firefight Versus. Forge World is a vast new environment in “Halo: Reach” with unlimited creative potential that will allow players to create and share their unique map designs over Xbox LIVE. Firefight Versus is a brand new multiplayer mode that pits a team of player-controlled Elites with Covenant AI support against a team of player-controlled Spartans. With an epic campaign, diverse competitive and cooperative multiplayer experiences, robust user-creation tools, player rewards, and more, “Halo: Reach” is the most ambitious “Halo” game ever and promises to set a new standard for action-packed entertainment, replayability and customisation.
Additionally, Microsoft and Bungie announced a stunning lineup of custom-designed “Halo: Reach” hardware products at Comic-Con, including the Xbox 360 Limited Edition “Halo: Reach” Bundle, “Halo: Reach” Limited Edition Wireless Controller and “Halo: Reach” Limited Edition Wireless Headset. The Xbox 360 Limited Edition “Halo: Reach” Bundle has a suggested retail price of £249.99, and will be available on 14th September. The “Halo: Reach” Limited Edition Wireless Controller and Wireless Headset will be available on 3rd September for the estimated retail prices of £39.99 and £34.99, respectively. All three products are available for preorder today while supplies last.
“Halo: Reach” is currently available for preorder in Standard, Limited and Legendary editions at participating retailers worldwide. The Standard Edition has an estimated retail price of £49.99, and the Limited and Legendary editions of the game will retail for £59.99 and £99.99, respectively, and are packed with extras fans won’t want to miss. As a special bonus, fans can receive a token to unlock an exclusive in-game Spartan Recon Helmet, by making a pre-order reservation at participating retailers.
Developed by award-winning studio Bungie exclusively for Xbox 360, “Halo: Reach” launches in the UK on Sept. 14, 2010.

"nail'd", the blisteringly fast off-road racing game from Deep Silver, has inspired members of several Metal bands to compose an entire soundtrack especially for the game.
With its absolutely insane track design featuring unexpected turns, deep chasms and high velocity jumps at breakneck speeds, "nail'd" send players' adrenalin levels through the roof. This is the intense feeling that the musicians wanted to express in their uncompromising, high energy tracks.
Illustrious names from the contemporary Metal scene, including Raymond Herrera and Christian Olde Wolbers (Fear Factory, Arkaea), Pat Lachman (Damageplan), Wayne Static (Static X), Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed), Stephen Carpenter (Deftones), Jed Simon (Strapping Young Lad), and John Boecklin (DevilDriver), have got together in the studio to add a wicked soundtrack to the game.
Together, these musicians have created a rock-hard Metal soundtrack for "nail'd". Besides various instrumentals, it includes three dedicated "nail'd" songs: "Count for Something", "Through Walls of Flame" (sung by Jamey Jasta), and "Decimator" (vocals by Wayne Static). All lyrics were specially written for the game.
In addition, licensed tracks from Slipknot, Queens of the Stone Age, Backyard Babies, Rise Against, American Sixgun, Aggressive Chill, and Slaves on Dope help turn on the heat in "nail'd" even more.
"nail'd" is being developed by Techland and will appear on the PlayStation®3 Computer Entertainment System, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®, and PC. The world-wide launch of "nail'd" is planned for the 4th quarter of 2010.

July 29th, 2010, 12:03 Posted By: wraggster
As per the Research & Analysis division of analyst firm Forecasting & Analyzing Digital Entertainment, LLC (FADE) gaming on Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) grew by double-digit numbers during the first half of the year, after a sluggish start in January and February which saw numbers down year over year. Overall, the XBLA market place grew 13% to $46.1 million USD by the end of June. June 2010 capped off the first half with an impressive 36% increase compared to last year's June 2009.
FADE reports that the major turning point in 2010 for XBLA came during the heavily promoted 'Block Party' event, which started in March and featured four titles: 'Toy Soldiers', 'Perfect Dark', 'Scrap Metal' and 'Game Room'. 'Toy Soldiers' and 'Perfect Dark' both took in over $2 million USD during the first half, placing each among the top five by revenue. The free-to-download classic title destination 'Game Room' also saw success, with over a million downloads shortly after release.
March started the positive trend, posting a strong 41% year-over-year increase in revenues, which began a consecutive 4-month run of double digit gains in revenue when compared to 2009. Starting in April, Microsoft began to aggressively promote price drops on dozens of titles, starting with the 'Inventory Blowout' sale which ran for one week in April, and included 10 titles. Throughout the second quarter, multiple sales were offered on titles, totaling over 40 titles offered on discount. These sales were seen as a success, as many titles saw revenue increases of between 50-200%. "We saw Microsoft take a very different approach to product deployment strategies this year," said Benjamin Schlichter, Director of Research and Analysis for FADE. "The second quarter of the year has traditionally been their weakest, and they made great strides to improve the performance during the period, as revenue increased 24% compared to the year prior during a period when much of the rest of the industry is down."
Sales Expected to Rise on Hardware, 'Summer of Arcade', and 'Kinect'
FADE maintains that Xbox Live Arcade will realize an estimated $130 million to $140 million by the end of the year, following strong hardware sales due to a solid holiday lineup, the new Slim console, and marketing for the motion-sensing Kinect hardware. Most notably, Microsoft's 3rd annual 'Summer of Arcade' is anticipated to be met with impressive sales, following the implementation of their new 'Destination Arcade' UI.
Kinect brings an air of unpredictability to the mix. FADE research believes that Kinect pricing may dampen sales for the hardware slightly, but the possibilities of the platform may yield impressive revenues for Arcade developers looking to leverage the new platform for mini-games and unique, affordable experiences.
FADE Top 10 Estimates for H1 2010, by Revenue (USD)
Toy Soldiers (Signal Studios) - $4.6 million (1200 Microsoft Points)
Trials HD (RedLynx) - $4.4 million (800 - 1200 Microsoft Points)
Castle Crashers (The Behemoth) - $2.9 million (800 - 1200 Microsoft Points)
Battlefield 1943 (EA DICE) - $2.5 million (800 - 1200 Microsoft Points)
Perfect Dark (4J Studios) - $2.4 million (800 Microsoft Points)
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Capcom) - $1.8 million (800 - 1200 Microsoft Points)
Family Game Night (EA Bright Light) - $1.7 million (400 - 800 Microsoft Points)
Shadow Complex (Chair Entertainment) - $1.2 million (800 - 1200 Microsoft Points)
Magic: The Gathering (Stainless Games) - $900,000 (800 Microsoft Points)
Call of Duty Classic (Infinity Ward) - $800,000 (1200 Microsoft Points)

Konami is bringing three big-budget blockbusters to the Eurogamer Expo 2010: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Def Jam Rapstar and SAW II: Flesh & Blood. And they'll be playable - all three before their UK release.
Lords of Shadow, made by MercurySteam and overseen by Hideo Kojima, spins Castlevania into a third-person action romp for the first time. Production values are monstrous and there are no quick-time events, just "atmospheric presentation, flashy combat, fluid platforming and smart puzzles". That's what Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson wrote when she saw the game in May.
Def Jam Rapstar is Konami's urban answer to SingStar - and then some. The top hip-hop acts of today have lent their songs to the game for mimicry. But what's really interesting is the community area where wannabe rappers can stuff their video demos in front of Def Jam music producers using the game's built-in tools. "Def Jam Rapstar comes across as the real deal," wrote Matt Martin in Eurogamer's July preview, "and 4mm Games could be about to step up, stand centre stage and set the roof on fire."
SAW II is the gruesome, unflinching sequel that provides challenges such as delicately slicing around a terrified man's eye to retrieve a key to unlock a timed trap that would otherwise rip his face apart. Zombie Studios has conjured a story to sit between the second and third of the immensely successful series of films. Will you be able to stomach it?
Def Jam Rapstar will be released on 5th November. SAW II: Flesh & Blood and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be released this autumn - sometime after 1st-3rd October, which is when the Eurogamer Expo takes place.

The Xbox 360 forecast is absolutely droughtful this week at retail, with the Clash of the Titans theater DVD release tie-in drying up store shelves. Thankfully, the Xbox Live Marketplace is overflowing with new content this week, including today's release of the new Madden demo.
Additionally, DLC for a pool of recent releases -- Alan Wake, Lost Planet 2 and Transformers, to name a few -- flowed out today, and the "Summer of Arcade" shines on tomorrow with Hydro Thunder Hurricane. (Did you read our review yet?) Finally, Borderands' trio of add-ons is on sale through Sunday.

A 'very special' Halo: Reach announcement will leave Microsoft's lips on Thursday, the firm has told CVG.
The news will arrive at an invite-only event in London - which we'll be at front and centre, don't you worry.
And do you know who else will? Baldy Gadget Show man Jason Bradbury and Rio Ferdinand. Yep, Rio 'I'm really supposed to be at a drugs test' Ferdinand. Nope, we don't know why either.
Perhaps Master Chief will return. In a Man Utd shirt. Or something.
A blurb sent over from MS this afternoon reads:
'England Football Captain Rio Ferdinand and The
Gadget Show's Jason Bradbury would like you to join them for a very special announcement this Thursday for the launch of highly anticipated entertainment blockbuster, Halo: Reach - out exclusively on Xbox 360 on September 14, developed by Bungie.'
Speculate away, dear readers... You'll know as soon as we do...

The Signal is the first of three new Alan Wake episodes. Developer Remedy has confirmed that 'The Writer' and another unnamed episode are scheduled for later this year.
Despite positive reviews Alan Wake hasn't sold well at retail. However, Remedy is still confident in the title and even has the plot worked out for a sequel.

Once upon a time in 2007, there was a little-known game called Shadowrun, that let gamers on both Xbox 360 and PC destroy one another for sport. Such is the environment that Microsoft facilitated, but alas, it wasn't for long, as the moment Shadowrun flopped the cross-platform feature was dropped, though it resurfaced once or twice in third-party titles as the years shot by. Outspoken HP exec Rahul Sood (of Voodoo fame) spins a slightly more complex yarn, however: he says Microsoft killed the project when it found that "mediocre" PC gamers could wipe the floors with the very best players on Xbox. Now, we're not confirming his story, and there are plenty of other possible explanations if you follow the money, of course, but we can't help but feel a hint of admiration for the longevity of gaming mouse and keyboard. Here's hoping we can all leave our predilections at the door as developers pit Android vs. iPhone.

Bungie has explained what it was on about when it said the new Xbox 360 bundle for Halo: Reach would have "custom sound effects from the Halo universe".
Speaking at Comic-Con, the developer said that when you hit the on/off button you hear the Invisibility power-up sound effect, rather than the chime that plays when the new console's capacitive button currently senses your oily fingertip.
What's more, when you eject the disc tray it plays the noise you hear when the Spartan's shield armour charges.
Needless to say, this is the coolest thing in the history of things, and clearly justifies the £249 / $399 you're expected to pay. Probably.
Bungie has an unboxing video on its website that sadly doesn't include the sound effects, but does show off the game's Limited and Legendary editions. The latter includes a model of the Noble Team in happier times.
Halo: Reach is due out on 14th September.

Capcom and Namco Bandai Games have announced two crossover fighting games: Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter.
Street Fighter X Tekken, in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, uses the engine behind Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV.
Tekken characters such as Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams will be "re-imagined" using Street Fighter's 2.5D art style.
That means while the character models will be realised in 3D, they will fight on a 2D plane.
The game will include modes such as Versus, Training and Tag Team combat, where players select two fighters to deliver knockout assist attacks and special combos.
Commenting on the origins of the project, Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono said: "This is history we're making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn't just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I'm going to give it my all."
Meanwhile, Namco Bandai Games is working on Tekken X Street Fighter, in development at Namco by Tekken series director Katsuhiro Harada.
According to a report by Kotaku, Tekken X Street Fighter will play in the style of Tekken, with contestants fighting in a 3D arena.
At the San Diego Comic-Con, where both titles were announced, Ono said the games won't be out "for a while" and that fighting game fans should enjoy Marvel vs. Capcom 3 while they wait.
