Those hoping to finally see Doom 4 at this year's QuakeCon will have to wait longer, perhaps until next year. At the convention's welcome speak, CEO Todd Hollenshead immediately broke hearts by saying that Doom 4 would not be shown.
The game is still in the works, says Hollenshead, but it isn't at the stage in development where id Software feels it is ready to be shown publicly. Bummer. But hey, if it looks as good as id's other game Rage, IGN's E3 Game of the Show, when it finally is unveiled, my guess is it will be worth the wait.

Bungie brainstormed 150 mission ideas for Halo Reach, before wittling them down to around 20 or so, creative director, Marcus Lehto has revealed.
Speaking to CVG, the Bungie man said that some of the missions in Reach the studio's been waiting "ten years" to pull off.
"That's one of the things we paid special attention to when we began," he said. "We didn't just start off with the story and then try to mash missions into it; we came up with like a hundred and fifty mission ideas that we threw up on a wall.
"And we sat down and critiqued them all and we were like: 'we just have to do some of these; we've been waiting ten years!' So we whittled that down to maybe 20 or so, then we boiled those down to the missions that finally made it into the game."
Lehto explained that although there are a set number of objectives in the studio's final Halo, players can approach them in an abundance of ways.
"That's part of the fun! Halo's a sandbox shooter, so you're right - you can tackle it in a hundred different ways and it'll play out differently every time," he said.
"And if you get bored of that, you can turn on skulls, modifiers, different difficulties... play it co-op on the same box. Matchmaking over Live. There are a lot of neat things to do with campaign."
Bungie is of course set to launch its final instalment in the Halo series on September 14. The developer released a brand new Halo Reach trailer earlier this month - check it out and try not to be excited.

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has said he has high hopes the next instalment in the Fable series will be the biggest, best and most lucrative yet.
"We want more than five million people playing Fable III on the Xbox 360, full stop," he told MCV. Around three million copies of the original Fable were sold, while the figure for the sequel was 3.5 million.
So how does Molyneux intend to boost sales this time around? Why, by making the game more accessible to a wider audience, of course.
"Part of that plan is less clutter in the game, less aggravating little inventions that Peter Molyneux once thought was a good idea," said Peter Molyneux.
"More clarity, better story, better cast, better balance. Of course, we have to do all this still with fresh ideas and a new feel to the game."
Fable III is out on 29th October.

Industry analysts have already weighed in with their thoughts on Kinect's $150 price point -- now we're hearing from one of them on how well he thinks the gizmo will sell. The answer: really well, actually.
Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital has crunched numbers and deduced that Microsoft is manufacturing the motion sensor at a rate of two million per month, and believes that four million will be sold by 2011. That figure doesn't purely represent stand-alone sales, however. "The mix of Xbox 360 shipments for the holidays will be more heavily weighted toward the Kinect bundle," Sebastian believes, which is why he's upped his sales forecast from three million units in calendar Q4.
Interestingly, the analyst points out that sales of PlayStation Move, which launches roughly six weeks earlier on September 19 and "without as much 'buzz' as Kinect," could offer a better picture of how Microsoft's motion control offering will perform after it makes its bow on November 4.

via IGN
It was reported earlier this week that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 motion camera Kinect will be able to recognise sign language – it seems, though, that the version making it to retail cannot.
In a statement released to Kotaku a Microsoft rep claims:
“We are excited about the potential of Kinect and its potential to impact gaming and entertainment. Microsoft files lots of patent applications to protect our intellectual property, not all of which are brought to market right away. Kinect that is shipping this holiday will not support sign language.”
The site goes on to quote “sources close to the evolution of Kinect's development” as saying that early versions of the Kinect hardware included a higher-res camera (over twice the resolution) than the 320x240 version found in the retail iteration of the device.
This enabled them to recognise individual fingers. However, the downscale in camera – which Kotaku claims was a cost-cutting measure – means that finger recognition is no longer possible.
MCV has contacted Microsoft about the accuracy of Kotaku’s claims.

Despite being manufactured in China, the current generation of home consoles are illegal in the giant country - and have been since 2000. However, Microsoft is currently lobbying to sell the 360 in China.
Microsoft China exec, Zhang Yaqin, told Shanghai Daily that the company is continuing efforts to acquire approval but ultimately "it all depends on the government".
The decision to allow the legal sale of Microsoft's games console will involve acquiring approval from "several government bureaus".
Although it is still unclear why consoles are banned, a Niko Partners researcher recently said that the government felt that this action would prevent the youth from wasting their mind.
"The government thought that was the best way to protect Chinese youth from wasting their minds on video games, after a parental outcry".
Not only is the Xbox 360 banned in China, but Chinese law has also blocked the sale of Microsoft's Kinect.

Microsoft will begin the Kinect beta program soon - and has sent out the first batch of invites.
TechRadar reports that invites for Microsoft's eagerly anticipated update was distributed through Microsoft Connect, which is used by the company to obtain customer feedback on new products.
Running a beta program for an upcoming update is a common practice for Microsoft. The firm issued similar invites for a number of the dashboard updates.
Microsoft has said that the beta is "a unique opportunity to see pre-release software."
Microsoft is currently scheduled to hold a Kinect focused event at the company's GamesCom press conference in Cologne next week. It is also set to reveal 'big PC gaming news' soon.

Microsoft’s European head of Game Studios Peter Molyneux has urged people not to judge Kinect by its early software and instead wait until developers have had the chance to truly get to grips with the device.
“We can do core games with it, we can do totally immersive games,” Molyneux told Joystiq. “It enables us designers to do unique experiences that have never been touched before but that takes us time, it really does.
“When we transitioned from the PC to the console with Fable, it took us five years to do that. And that's just going from a mouse to a controller. And this is like going from a controller to nothing. I'm sure that's going to happen. And I'm fighting for that to happen with Milo and whatever we do with Fable in the future. It just takes time.
“I'm not saying this as a Microsoft person, I'm talking purely as a designer -- I really truly believe that something like Kinect, changing that input device, could make us leap forward in the form of entertainment we make.”
Molyneux added that it’s this process that has to date prevented him from announcing a concrete intention to publish Milo on Xbox 360.
“And this is one of the reasons why I'm absolutely vehement about not giving a release date for Milo,” he added. “Because as soon as I give that release date, then I'm on this express train and it's gotta get finished. And it requires so much artistry and balancing and tweaking and polishing.
However, when asked about launch titles such as Kinect Adventures the best compliment Molyneux could conjure was to claim that they’re “pretty good”.
“To be a launch title is very, very hard,” he explained. “Actually, I've played a hell of a lot of Sports. And it's pretty good. And [Kinect] Adventures is pretty good. Considering the amount of time [they’ve had to develop the games], I think they're pretty good experiences.
“I think anybody that gets Kinect that and buys those titles, they're not gonna be disappointed. But they should really, really be excited by what comes next. Because that's what I judge Kinect on, is what the next step is.”

The box for the 4GB Xbox Kinect bundle in Australia appears to have revealed a 250GB Kinect bundle before MS has officially announced it.
Clearly visible on the side of the box are two bundle profiles, one for the already-expected 4GB package and one for another bundle that includes a 250GB Xbox slim. All other contents of the pack appear to be the same as the 4GB one (so Kinect Adventures is expected to be included), except for a short note for the 250GB pack with says: Hard Drive includes game and demos."
It's not clear if this means Kinect Adventures will be slapped on the hard drive (saving pennies for MS in discs) or if a second game is thrown in with the inevitably more expensive, possibly more hardcore-focused package.
The 4GB kinect bundle, which includes Kinect Adventures, will set you back £249.99 ($300). The standalone SRP for Kinect is £129.99 ($149 in the US; €149 in mainland Europe).
We expect confirmation this week.

Node21 (Team XeDev) now released XM360 v1.8d to the public, a tool running on homebrew 360s that will allow to organize, scan and unlock XBLA and DLC content.
What's new/fixed (since v1.7):
* Fixed fact that you couldn't sort by ratings or raters in the collection manager (v1.8)
* Fixed new scraper (1.7b) getting ratings wrong. I made a change to the file format that breaks compatibility with old xbla_titles.csv, so make sure you are not using an old version of the file. (v1.8)
* Fixed initial scan crashing the 360 if there was no existing content.bin file. (v1.8)
* xm360_server is now aware of the last time xbla_titles.csv and dlc_titles.csv were generated. Every 360 that connects to xm360_server will *automatically* update the xbla_titles.csv and dlc_titles.csv on that 360. Furthermore, you can regenerate, or replace those files without stopping xm360_server from running. So, I leave the server running all the time, 24/7. I have scheduled a /X and a /D every night at midnight as well. It's all invisible without any hands on maintenance. Basically, this feature means you shouldn't ever have to worry about moving these files to your 360 anymore. On the server, these files should be in the same place as content.bin. (v1.8)
* Also, if you put an xm360.xex in that same directory, xm360 will *also* update itself if the version there is newer than the version that is running. It will automatically restart if this happens. This is a moot feature though, unfortunately. (v1.8)
* A request was made to include the DLC filename for missing DLC in the DLC_report.txt (v1.8b)
* A suggestion from a donater: The first scene now has the ability to seperate GOD from XBLA (use RB to toggle) (v1.8c)
* The server will now wait for you to hit enter after scraping XBLA or DLC (v1.8c)
* The server has a new command line option (/Q) to tell it *not* to wait for enter after scraping. Use this if you automatically scrape every night via a scheduled task, or something like that. (v1.8c)
* After "ATHiEST" leaked version 1.7b, I stopped work on xm360, except to support people who had donated. I'm releasing 1.8d to get everyone out there caught up to what has changed since then. Any future work on XM360 will once again go to people who donated first. (v1.8d)
* Due to a request, after unlocking XBLA, you no longer have to do a full re-scan for content (v1.8d)
* FTP is much faster thanks to the FSD team teaching me to assign threads to a CPU, go DONATE TO FSD PLEASE! (v1.8d)
* Because xm360_server became the only way to update the database, and it doesn't work on linux. I've gone back to including the perl scrapers (but they are still not as good as xm360_server) (v1.8d)

Tease as much as you want, Sony, but things get real serious when you flip to the other side and look at the magic behind Microsoft's Kinect camera. Recently, T3 was able to get behind the scenes for a quick lesson on how this Xbox 360 peripheral works, and as part of the tour, it also saw the innocent sensor sitting bare naked in the lab. As you can see above, this little device actually has a lot to pack in -- namely a RGB camera for facial recognition plus video capturing, a depth sensor (an infrared projector paired with a monochrome CMOS camera) for movement tracking, four downward-facing mics for voice recognition, a quiet motor in the bulky base for rotation, and all the circuitry components to link them up. Head over to the source link for a detailed briefing -- but we all know you're just gonna go straight to the gallery of Redmond's naughty pics.

Although the bundle has yet to be announced, a 250GB Xbox 360 / Kinect bundle can be seen on Microsoft's Australian packaging for the 4GB Xbox 360 / Kinect box.
The 250GB bundle appears to be very similar to the matte 4GB bundle, with the exception of the larger capacity hard drive, a glossy finish, and the inclusion of a headset. It isn't clear what game comes with the bundle, though it's most likely Kinect Adventures, the standard offering in both the standalone Kinect package and the 4GB Xbox bundle. The 250GB model also has the following note: "Hard Drive includes game and demos." The demos we're used to, but it seems that Microsoft may be foregoing an extra disc and putting the pack-in game on the hard drive itself.
We're following up with Microsoft for more details, pricing and – yes – international release plans.

A Microsoft patent application for "gesture keyboarding" that became public today details how Microsoft could be thinking of using its Kinect device not only for the Xbox, but also possibly for a Minority Report type of computing interface (which others have predicted previously). Maybe they'll call it "no-touch" computing?
While GoRumors focused on the patent as a way to show how the Kinect works (which it does) after reading it, it would seem that Microsoft is certainly looking to go beyond the Xbox with the Kinect. Take a look at some of the "claims" that Microsoft is making with this patent:
* A method for providing keyboard-like input to a computer system that accepts gesture input,
* Each gestured character comprises an alphanumeric character.
* The input gesture comprises a gesture in a sign language.
* The sign language comprises American Sign Language (ASL).
* The user creates the input gesture using a physical prop.
* The physical prop comprises a keyboard that is not physically connected to the computer system
* The user creates the input gesture by mimicking use of a phantom prop.
* The phantom prop is a phantom ball or a phantom keyboard.
