The creator of little-known motion detection technology iisu reckons Microsoft took "shortcuts" to get Xbox 360 add-on Kinect to market this November.
Softkinetic CEO and founder Michel Tombroff is impressed by Microsoft's marketing of the sensor, but unimpressed by the technology behind it.
"We started working on this [iisu] in 2003," he told Eurogamer.
"It started as a research project in Belgium. I don't know how they [Microsoft] did it on their side, but we've just put a lot of effort and many years of research into solving those problems before going to the market.
"They decided to go to market very quickly so they had to take some shortcuts.
"I will not comment on their behalf, but it took us a long time, so we don't see how anyone else… And it's not because you throw thousands of people at a problem that you solve it easily. Those are very complex problems."
Tombroff, who has partnered with EA Sports for the Tiger Woods series of games and is making his own videogames internally, including a rhythm music game called Silhouette, was referencing problems associated with lag, player detection and occlusion that have dogged Kinect in the run up to its release.
iisu, which claims to be "the most advanced 3D gesture recognition software platform", has solved these problems, Tombroff said.
"I'm very impressed they've [Microsoft] achieved this so quickly and they've been able to launch this initiative," he added.
"For us it's a blessing because now with Microsoft on the market, the market starts. Everybody wants 3D gesture recognition.
"I'm not impressed with the technical result. But I'm impressed by the marketing efforts."
iisu, which Tombroff hopes consumers will be able to buy from shops at the end of the year, is designed to work with non-gaming devices such as tellys and set top boxes, as well as traditional games.
It includes a Kinect-esque webcam and its own "software recognition layer" that supports every platform and 3D camera.
iisu is currently available for developers and console manufacturers who are preparing to launch products that use motion sensing.
"The way we've developed our own middleware solution, we paid a lot of attention to a very reduced lag. We have a lower lag on the software side.
"The camera we've developed uses a completely different technology than Kinect, and for that reason is more efficient with respect to lag, or latency.
"As part of the software solution we've patented, we have The Scene Segmentation, which allows us to recognise users irrespective of their positions, as long as they're in the field of view. It doesn't matter if you're sitting down or standing up.
"When people pass in front of each other or you put your hand in front of your face, the camera loses track of part of your body. We've solved that problem. We can always track your gestures even though you create occlusions.
"We paid a lot of attention to prevent other people from disturbing you. Of course if the person jumps on you and hugs you then that could distract the game. But if the person just sits next to you or stands next to you and watches you, you don't want that person to interfere with the game. We've solved that problem as well."
Tombroff said he would welcome Sony and Microsoft's advances if they wanted to use iisu with the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.
But he refused to say whether he's had talks with Sony about controller-free gaming on the PS3, citing non-disclosure agreements, or with Microsoft about using iisu to improve Kinect.
"We bring a very attractive time to market advantage because we can easily adapt our software and our camera and our content to any of those platforms. That's important.
"If you look back at Sony and look at the evolution, they tried the PlayStation, then the PlayStation Eye, now the motion controllers. It's easy for someone like you who follows the market closely to see where they're going."
Will we see iisu's motion-free tech incorporated into the PS3, or perhaps even the PS4?
"Maybe. As long as I say maybe I don't commit to anything. But yes, maybe."
Have you talked to Sony about this?
"I'm under NDA. I cannot tell you. By saying that, the answer is yes, but we cannot talk about it.
"I'm afraid I cannot comment."
What about Kinect?
"We are developing content for our technology for different cameras and potentially for the Xbox. We have our own tools, our own middleware, we can do a lot of things Kinect cannot do, even on that platform.
"For that reason, I don't mean to criticise Kinect as something that is not good. I'm just saying things can go much better still. It's just the beginning."
Have you talked to Microsoft?
"I cannot say."
PlayStation Move is set for a 15th September release in the UK. Kinect will be released on 10th November.

Microsoft has confirmed that Kinect WILL launch with voice control.
In a statement given to Eurogamer Microsoft said: "Voice control is an exciting part of the Kinect for Xbox 360 controller-free experience and we can confirm that it will be available at launch in November 2010.
"Only on Xbox 360 will you be able to navigate the Kinect Hub using your voice to control your movies, TV shows and music. We do not have additional details to share about local voice availability at this time."
The confusion appears to revolve around the use of non-English languages with Kinect.
ORIGINAL STORY: When Microsoft's motion-sensing add-on Kinect launches this November it will not allow gamers to interact with their Xboxes using their voices as promised.
Voice chat software Video Kinect, premiered during Microsoft's E3 2010 press conference in June, also misses the cut, MCV reports.
Instead the feature will be integrated after Kinect's released.
Marketing manager for Xbox Live EMEA Robin Burrowes said: "We will be announcing when voice control will be turned on in due course."
The move is likely to disappoint many who have pre-ordered the £130 Xbox 360 motion sensor.
We were looking forward to telling our Xboxes to turn off and on and play movies, as Microsoft demonstrated at E3 2010 in June, when Kinect launches in the UK on 10th November.
Last week Microsoft's vice president of interactive entertainment Chris Lewis told Eurogamer core gamers will "love that they can jump into a game like Joy Ride, which should really appeal to the hardcore community".
Well, at least there's Kinectimals.

Halo-inspired Xbox 360? Check. Xbox 360 laptop? Seen it. Xbox 360 fused with a PS3? Yep. A Tony Stark-approved Xbox 360? Thanks to one Zachariah Perry Cruse, we can now add this beaut to the list. This here design student managed to use his summer vacation for a little more than weekend jaunts to Gary, putting an awful lot of blood, sweat and fear into his very own Iron Man Xbox 360. Naturally, it's the older, less slimmer 360 console, complete with a 120GB hard drive and an HDMI socket. There's a video of the LEDs doing their thing after the break, and that eBay link will get you where you need to be if you're a prospective buyer. And let's be honest here -- you are a prospective buyer.

Yeah, you thought you were so clever waiting for the 4GB Xbox 360 to come out. A mere $199, while all your sucker friends had already sprung the $299 for the hard drive-equipped model. You thought you could live a happy, fulfilling life swapping thumb drives and carefully cropping your download collection. But you can't, can you? Night sweats, day sweats, you've got it bad. You need a hard drive, and now Microsoft's got a $130 250 gigger just for your wreck of a self. The drive has started popping up in GameStop stores and on GameStop.com, and while Microsoft still hasn't actually officially announced the accessory, when has that stopped you before?

August 21st, 2010, 23:07 Posted By: wraggster
After a brief period of confusion, where conflicting dates were communicated in the same press release, Microsoft this morning confirmed the European launch date for Kinect - and UK boss Neil Thompson has told GamesIndustry.biz he expects the device to "sell out" before Christmas.
The unit releases on November 10, a day after Activision's hugely anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Thompson was bullish on its prospects, despite concerns over its price point, insisting: "It's highly possible we will run out of product in the period through Christmas".
He added that exact shipment numbers were still unclear, with Microsoft yet to make "any decisions on country splits yet - we have to do that in the next few weeks."
However, he insisted the company would be "bringing great quantities of product in and replenishing the product on a very frequent basis. On all of the supply plans I've seen so far, I'm confident people who want to play Kinect will have every opportunity".
Kinect's price point, confirmed as £130 for a standalone unit in the UK, has been the subject of intense debate, but Thompson rubbished suggestions it was too expensive and claimed Microsoft had "priced it as aggressively as we can given the extensive costs of development to bring the technology to market."
He reiterated the company's position that it represented "very good value" as a "multiiplayer environment" versus rivals like Sony's Move (which requires additional purchases for more than one player), but conceded that since Kinect is an "integrated technology solution", this was not an option.
Despite analyst predictions of a Kinect price cut early next year, Thompson poured cold water on the idea. "I haven't even launched the product yet so I'm not even thinking about price cuts - it's not entered my consciousness," he said.
"We've set the price point we believe is great value to our partners and consumers ultimately, so everyone in that chain gets great value. We have no anticipation of making any move on price."
Ultimately, consumer activity will shape Microsoft's plans in this area. It's unlikely the company anticipated slicing £100 from the RRP of the original Xbox just two months after launch to stimulate sluggish sales.
But with UK retail reporting strong pre-order interest, Microsoft's confidence of a strong launch may not be misplaced.
"You've got to go with what you believe in and we fundamentally believe we're bring a whole new experience to the world of gaming," he said.
Meanwhile, Thompson said that, aside from Kinect Adventures (which comes bundled with the hardware, he expected new Harmonix IP Dance Central to be the best-selling Kinect title this Christmas.
"At this point my personal view based on the feedback I've seen, Dance Central seems to be pretty hot; Kinect Sports is pretty hot; and for kids, Kinectimals is incredibly engaging - in that order".

The Harry Potter video games are about to take on a whole new level of interactivity, as Electronic Arts today announced that the Xbox 360 version of the upcoming Deathly Hallows, Part 1 video game will take advantage of Microsoft's new Xbox Kinect technology.
As demonstrated today by the Phelps twins at a German video game conference, players will be able to use their body to fight off enemies in the game. You're able to aim as well as fire your spells using your arms.
Watch video of the Phelps twins playing the game at this link. Find it in stores this November. Again, this Kinect technology will only be available on Xbox 360. Thanks to Mats, Brandon, Raul, Cena, and Henry for the tip!

While Microsoft's Xbox 360 is made in China, it still isn't available for legal purchase there, nor is Sony's PlayStation 3 or Nintendo's Wii, but the Redmond, Washington-based company isn't giving up hope.
Microsoft executive Zhang Yaqin told the Shanghai Daily that the company still hopes to receive approval to sell the 360 in China, but that "... it all depends on the government." There's still no set timetable for launch and the issue involves "several government bureaus," which, of course, only adds multiple layers of bureaucracy.

The patent for Microsoft's motion-sensing camera Kinect suggested that the device could understand American Sign Language. Well, it can't. At least, the version going on sale in November can't.
Responding to the claims made in the patent, Microsoft has told Kotaku "We are excited about the potential of Kinect and its potential to impact gaming and entertainment. Microsoft files lots of patent applications to protect our intellectual property, not all of which are brought to market right away. Kinect that is shipping this holiday will not support sign language."
The original Kinect had a much higher resolution (over twice that of the final model's 320x240), and as such, was able to not only recognise the limbs of a player as the current model version can, but their fingers as well (which the current version can't). And when the hardware could recognise fingers, it would have been able to read sign language.

We tried out the [Kinect] menu system and movie controls to test its recognition of seated users:
* Sitting in a chair: Definitely works.
* Sitting on the floor: Works.
* Reclining while facing the Kinect: Works.
* Reclining with the Kinect at our side: We couldn't get this to work, but we've been told that it will by launch.
* Using another human as a coffee table (should have taken photos!): Kinect recognized the person behind the human coffee table trying to control the movie.
