Microsoft's upcoming Project Natal motion-sensing hardware has been created as much to enhance the living room experience as it has for playing games with, according to Xbox 360 general manager Marc Whitten.
Speaking to Fast Company, Whitten said that Natal had also been designed to replace the multitude of buttons and remote controls in people's living rooms, and that it might eventually be able to react to a user's response during a television event such as a football match.
"If you counted the number of buttons in your living room, it would send a chill down your spine," he said. "A lot of people can play games amazingly well, but others feel locked out if games involve a bunch of triggers and buttons."
"But Natal isn't just about gaming," he added. "It's about all living room experiences. Imagine a sporting event. Natal could know which team you're for because it sees your jersey, or knows you thought a bad call was made when you yell 'boo.'
"It learns about you and gets smarter to create a more tailored entertainment experience."
Microsoft's Natal is due out before the end of the year. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter recently speculated the new hardware would likely be bundled with a new Xbox 360 slim model for $299.

Microsoft is planning a $150 top-of-the-range SKU as one of its retail offerings for this Q4’s Halo Reach.
PlanetXbox360 reports that three SKUs are planned. As well as the standalone release, the Limited Edition version will include “a special case, collectibles and in-game armour”. That will retail for $80.
The Legendary edition will cost a massive $150 and include a ‘Noble 6’ model (pictured) as well as some DLC extras.
What this will translate to in the UK is yet to be seen, but expect it to at the very least match the £110 Sony asked for the Ultimate Edition of god of War III.
UPDATE: Gamestation has just listed all three SKUs on its site at the following prices:
* Halo Reach - £37.99
* Halo Reach Limited Edition - £59.99
* Halo Reach Legendary Edition - £99.99
UPDATE 2: Microsoft has since confirmed the official RRPs of each SKU:
* Halo Reach - £49.99
* Halo Reach Limited Edition - £59.99
* Halo Reach Legendary Edition - £99.99

Bungie has once again built up Halo: Reach to galactic proportions, saying that they are aiming to make it the definitive Halo experience and that they are expecting a huge marketing push from Microsoft for the last chapter of the acclaimed series.
Talking to the Seattle Times, community director Brian Jarrard said, "We're very optimistic. We have a lot riding on this game and we have high expectations for it."
"We certainly feel Reach will be the best Halo game that Bungie's ever made, and I think Microsoft's going to bet really big behind it," he added.
"This is what Microsoft does really well - big, huge entertainment launches. You're going to see that happen again for Reach."
Yesterday we reported that Bungie expects Halo: Reach to record the biggest console beta launch of all-time, forecasting over three million players on day one.

April 22nd, 2010, 17:12 Posted By: wraggster
Stardock CEO Brad Wardell believes that while achievement point systems in games, or on game platforms have been successful, there's still a lot more to come.
Speaking at a demonstration of the company's new Impulse Reactor platform, which allows developers of PC games to integrate a host of functions into their games - such as reward systems and multiplayer skill matching - he explained that developers should feel more able to explore alternatives to just points.
"In order for the user to enjoy the extra-game capabilities to really take off it needs to become more integrated with the game," he told GamesIndustry.biz. "Achievements just happen to be the easiest thing - but we can go so much further than that. You might play a shooter - play long enough and you could get extra weapons, and different games should have the flexibility to reward or encourage their players in different ways.
"But that can be expensive to do, so what we're hoping to do with Impulse Reactor is that because the client is integrated into the game, it's not some external client we're calling, or importing source code, we can incorporate DLC and all kinds of interesting virtual storage features that the developer can make use of.
"As a result it allows the developers, and their creativity and knowledge of their own game, to come up with less generic methods of rewarding. The reason why achievements are popular is because they're generic, and so easy to implement. The solution to that is to provide developers with the tools to make less generic reward systems."
He rejected the point that one of the reasons that achievement points have been successful, in the likes of World of Warcraft, or on the Xbox Live platform, is because they allow people to compare themselves to others more easily.
"I think that if each game is a little different... In Starcraft II, rankings obviously matter, but if I'm playing a roleplaying game, just because somebody has gone around and completed all the 'rats-in-the-basement' quests, that doesn't mean he deserves a better ranking than me," he said.
"Every developer probably has their own idea on how to reward their players - and as developers who are trying provide platforms to the market, I think it's our job to make sure they can think of unique ways to reward their customers and make them glad they purchased that game."

SNK is gearing up for another version of Metal Slug 7, dubbed Metal Slug XX on the PSP and Xbox 360. A downloadable version for Microsoft’s console has been in development for awhile. It’s finally coming out this spring. Here’s how it looks with a moving border in the background.
The dating-sim lite combat school and the new paths made for the PSP game are in this version of Metal Slug XX. However, Leona, a downloadable character, doesn’t appear to be in the Xbox 360 version. SNK says the game only has six characters and that number includes King of Fighters guests Ralf and Clark.
New features for the Xbox 360 version include leaderboards, online cooperative play, and the option to play with a friend using a regular TV.

A series of tips and a report from a reputable Cheap Ass Gamer indicate that there might be three retail editions of Halo: Reach offered when the game ships later this year: a standard edition, a limited edition and ... the "Legendary Edition." We'll give you a moment to catch your breath after dropping that bombshell on you. Ready? Good.
An alleged Best Buy ad, to be circulated next week, reveals that the retail packages will range in price from $60 for the standard game to $150 for the Legendary Edition, with the "limited" iteration of Reach falling in at $80. As you might imagine, the standard version supposedly comes with just the game itself, while the limited version is said to also include a "special limited edition case, collectibles and in-game armor," according to the ad. The $150 option allegedly contains all of the contents of the limited edition, in addition to even more "unique packaging" and in-game armor, plus a "Legendary Noble 6 Sculpture." When asked for comment, Microsoft issued its standard response: "We don't comment on rumor or speculation."
We'd suggest to those of you pining for Reach's Legendary Edition to wait a bit -- we hear these things tend to eventually drop in price to something much, much more reasonable. If you just can't wait, though, Best Buy, and no doubt other major retailers, will reportedly begin accepting your pre-orders next week.

No matter how weak or powerful the gadget, one brave soul will always broach the all-important question: can it play Doom? Just four days after hacking the Zune HD and unleashing the OpenZDK, the Zune community has received its answer. ZuneBoards forumgoer Netrix has opened the portal to the familiar alien hell, where gamers will writhe in agony as they struggle with tilt and touchscreen controls. Those who persevere regardless will find the app runs any of the original Doom WAD files. Full installer available at the source link; see OpenZDK's power in action after the break.

Today, EA and DICE will release a Kit Upgrade for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
That's good news for Xbox 360 owners but bad news for the PC and PS3 crowd, who'll receive the content "a little later on" according to the Battlefield blog.
Inside the Kit Upgrade are uniforms and guns, one set for each class. These are based on real-life equipment used by Special Operations troops like Delta Force and Spetsnaz. They use trendy camouflage and soon so will you.
Individually, class kits cost 160 Microsoft Points (£1.35/€1.90). Bundled, they cost 440 Microsoft Points (£3.75/€5.25).
Note that these are only available to buy in Europe; in the US access is reserved for codes redeemed from cans of fizzy drink Dr Pepper, who's not a real doctor at all.

Microsoft is allegedly in discussions with Peter Chernin, the former president of News Corp, to launch an Xbox 360-dedicated TV channel.
Controversially, however, Chernin wants Microsoft to raise the monthly price of a subscription to Xbox Live by between $1 and $2 to fund the venture.
Bloomberg reports that the channel would be jointly owned by Microsoft and Chernin and would be exclusive to subscribers of the gaming network.
Were it to materialise, the move would mark a significant step forward for the growing VOD movement that has seen video rental and sales claim an ever growing chunk of revenues on all three current-gen home consoles.

Microsoft product director Aaron Greenberg has claimed that the death of Live on the original Xbox will allow the firm to add "more features" to 360's service - adding that MS is "definitely aware" of consumer requests for extended Friends' Lists.
Microsoft pulled the plug on Live on the original Xbox last week - but not without some final farewell messages for Halo 2 players.
Greenberg said that the end of the service will allow greater "flexibility" for additions to the 360 online interface in future. That could include a new TV show, according to reports today.
"A lot of our partners talked to us about cutting off Xbox Live support, you kniw, a long time ago, and it was really something that we didn't take lightly," Greenberg told CVG sister mag Xbox World 360.
"We're at that point now where that community has largely transitioned off and onto the Xbox 360, and now, by discontinuing that support, we're able to add more features without necessarily having to support things like that firends list integration where you could see your friends on Xbox1 or Xbox 360. Having that new flexibility will allow us to bring more features to the Xbox Live Community on Xbox 360."
When asked if the new additions to Lie on 360 would include extended friends lists, Greenberg replied:
"We have heard from folks that they want to be able to extend the Friends List. It's something we are looking at. We haven't announced anything but it is definitely something that we're aware of."

My, how you've grown. Since the day we learned that PrimeSense was behind Microsoft's Project Natal, we've been under the impression that the 3D camera hardware would be a cute little face with three eyes. So why are we staring at another hammerhead shark? Perhaps because this latest leak isn't real -- or perhaps because Microsoft hasn't nailed down (or rightly doesn't trust testers with) the final hardware. Either way, Multiplayer.it has a host of pictures of an alleged Natal test kit, complete with user manual, and if their sources are legit, it seems Natal will have a motorized tilt function and require additional power (via wall wart) as a result. The better to track your body with, we suppose.

From Helldoc's Blog:
[QUOTE]
You guys keep asking about an eta : we have no ETA and probably wont have. Working on FSD is a hobby for all the team, so we never know much time we can put on it.
Current Status :
* Its pretty hard to give an overall status... Media player is still not in there (JQE is working on this, but still not committed the code)
* Recent games list still need to be totally redone. Some skin work need to be done to have a dynamic number of tabs. We still need to experiment and try to figure out how to get stock dash recently played list. If we cant do easily we'll probably just add a last time played datetime to each game and use this.
* Favorites : Still need to be 100% rewritten.
* Game type switching : Still need to be 100% rewritten
* Copy DVD : Still need to adapt FSD 1.XX code and properly clean. Currently not working.
* File Manager : Working but we want to change the way it behave (should be back to drive list instead of having to use shoulder button to switch drive)
* Nand flasher : working great
* About : Still need some work but will be quick.
* Game List : Games are listed but not sorted. Everything still need to be plugged in (boxart, game description, preview). I think game renaming feature broke in some previous rev, will need to fix it.
* Built-In Indexer : Need to add screenshots and preview movie with proper settings.
* HTTP : Still having some freeze issue and need to tweakt it a bit, otherwise its working great. Need to add priorites to the download queue.
* XeX extraction : Working great.
* Skin Edit Mode : Working great.
* Skin customisation : Working great.
* RSS Reader : Still need some work.
* Internal XML Reader : We're looking to change it to a SAX implementation, still need to be done.
* Autoupdater : First tests are working great but still need some intensive testing.
* Multilanguage : No work has been done on this yet.
Theres still lots of "Surprise" we have to experiment with and see what can be done than may imply changes in previous listed stuff.

Mafia II's game world is estimated to be "less than a third" of the size of GTA IV's Liberty City, claims Xbox World 360's latest preview.
In its latest issue, the mag states than the smaller real estate size of the 2K Czech sandbox has allowed it to polish the game to "startling" proportions.
It says: "Calling up a waypoint, it's immediately noticeable that Mafia II doesn't boast the biggest of maps - certainly not in comparison to GTA IV (we estimate that the game world must be less than a third of the size of Liberty City).
"Yet size doesn't always matter and it's obviously allowed 2K Czech to furnish Empire Bay with a startling level of polish that even genre masters Rockstar would grudgingly admire."
We've still got quite a wait for the promising crime spree, as the Mafia II release date has finally been confirmed for August 27.

Xbox 360 sales have reached the one million mark across Australia and New Zealand.
To celebrate, MS is auctioning off a series of specially designed 360s with the help of celebrities including Russell Crow and Hugh Jackman. Among the consoles up for grabs is the rather special Halo one pictured, and all proceeds go to charity.
"Reaching the one million console milestone is a great achievement and one that puts us in a great position for the coming year," said David McLean, Microsoft Australia's regional director, Entertainment and Devices Division.
"Since 2006, we've taken the lead in the innovation space and driven the growth in online entertainment," he added.
"Our online community, Xbox Live, is one of the largest online communities in the ANZ region with more than 525,000 subscribers. We also offer services such as Facebook and Twitter on Xbox Live and movies streamed in HD direct to your television, which really sets us apart from our competition."
We want those Xbox consoles.

Hollywood screenwriter James Gunn has been playtesting Project Natal - and putting his thoughts about it on the internet.
In a post on his blog Gunn wrote, "First I played a game kicking and whacking balls into targets... I was really struck by the amount of physical exertion it took. It’s amazing exercise and, because of that, I think it’s going to be a much better device for people’s health in general. As hyperbolic as it may sound, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years we see a decrease in childhood obesity simply because of the system."
Sounds like Gunn was playing Ricochet, a dodgeball-inspired game Microsoft has been using to demo Natal for ages now. But he also got to play something called River Rush, which doesn't appear to have been shown before.
"It’s a game where you stand side by side in a river raft, so it’s two people playing at once," said Gunn. Apparently you step right and left to steer the raft, and jump to reach floating stars as you sail down the rapids.
"This game was even more exhilarating than the kicking one, and even more aerobically challenging. In fact, I’d say the ONLY drawback to the Natal some people may have is that you have to get up off your ass to play it. But, for me, a person who likes exercise and gaming, it's sort of a dream come true. An hour of playing Natal every night will definitely burn calories."
Gunn concluded, "The Natal was an amazing piece of technology and I’ll be the first one in line to buy one when they come out during the holidays... I really, really can’t wait to shoot someone on that f***ing thing."
Project Natal will be released, as Gunn said, this holidays.
