Hey, what's this? We just started hearing rumors this morning that Microsoft was planning a new Xbox 360 controller with an improved D-pad, and bang -- Major Nelson just went live with a YouTube video detailing the new piece. The new D-pad is a trick new patented design that's just as we heard from Joystiq: it's a disc in the normal configuration, but a quick twist raises the crossbars about a quarter-inch, making it eminently more usable. (That sound you hear is joyous weeping.) The analog sticks have also been tweaked to be slightly more concave, and -- wonder of wonders -- the ABXY buttons are now translucent monochrome instead of colored. Wild. The new matte silver controller will only come bundled with the Play and Charge kit for $64.99 when it launches on November 9 in the States and replaces the existing wireless controller -- it'll hit Europe around February. Yep, it definitely seems like a major upgrade, but we've got a couple questions: when will it replace the packed-in controller? What about all the people who just bought new Stealthboxes and got the older controller? And, most importantly, when can we have one to try out? We're pressing for answers and we'll let you know

However, we do want to thank our loyal members and give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount, so now would be a good time to renew your subscription.
Again, the only subscription packages impacted are those mentioned above. For instance, the 12m UK Price? Not affected since it is not mentioned above.
Edit: You can sign in and hit this page on Xbox.com to find out when your Xbox LIVE subscription expires.
Even though the MSRP for Xbox LIVE Gold in the US is $49.99, it's sometimes sold for $30-35 from some online retailers. Hopefully, these sale prices would stay the same.

The producers of Entourage have already shown their tech savvy with a littering of BlackBerry, Jawbone and iPad use, but how about some unreleased hardware? Turtle was spotted doing a bit of cardio in last night's episode, nothing too shocking about that, but he did it using Microsoft's Kinect peripheral as a workout buddy. Last time we checked, that motion-controlled goodness wasn't supposed to be out for another two months -- we can only guess that good old Sal Assante managed to get his name on that top-secret beta tester list.

August 27th, 2010, 21:19 Posted By: wraggster
Rare's Kinect development director Nick Burton has encouraged core gamers to try Microsoft's new controller technology rather than dismissing it out of hand.
"All I can say to the core is go and have a go. It doesn't even have to be necessarily Kinect Sports. Go and have a go on Kinect, period," Burton told Eurogamer in an interview published today.
Like Chris Lewis last week, Burton said Rare had expected a bit of negative feedback on Kinect when the wraps first came off, but said playing with it first hand would change people's minds.
"Until people play Kinect, and they play it for more than a couple of seconds, which is unfortunately practically what you get in the trade shows... But you know hardly anybody's getting a chance to play it," he said.
"It's one of those things you've got to have what I call your Kinect moment, when you realise... And we see this, we saw it at gamescom and E3, people go, 'Oh, it's way better than I expected. It's way more high fidelity than I expected.'
"But when you're looking at a video on the internet and you're reading the write-ups, it's very difficult to get, well I think it's probably impossible to get that feeling."
Burton also said he believes that hardcore gamers will be all over it once the 10th November launch rolls around, whatever they may be saying to the contrary on forums - and he expects Kinect Sports to be a hotbed for them.
"You watch the Live leaderboards when these things come out," he said. "There will be people... We'll be there going, 'How the hell have they gone that fast?' or 'How have they got that big score?' That will be the hardcore doing that."

You know how sometimes people go "away" for the summer, and then when they come back they look ... totally different? Well, Major Nelson's Xbox Live Avatar didn't go anywhere but has seemingly undergone one such full body makeover -- as evidenced by the above comparison between the bobble-headed likeness (via Xbox Avatar Life) we had come to associate with the Xbox Live director of programming and his current Avatar. It would appear that Major's Avatar and perhaps other "VIP" Avatars are the (beta) test subjects in a forthcoming effort to transform the currently cartoonish Avatars into -- to put it candidly -- virtual figures that would look a lot less goofy in a motion-controlled sports game.
Recently, Rare senior programmer Nick Burton told OXM UK that Xbox Live Avatars would be proportionally redesigned to better connect the physical movements of Kinect players to their on-screen Avatars. Presumably, this "Avatar 2.0" update would occur in time for Kinect's November 4 launch and possibly as part of the expected, annual fall update of the Xbox 360 UI.

It seems like Microsoft's Kinect has been dogged by rumors of its limitations since day one. Some rumors have been busted -- you can play Kinect while seated, for instance -- but others are still nebulous just two months out from launch. Speaking to Kinect boss Kudo Tsunoda, VideoGamer attempted to clarify whether or not Kinect is limited to two "active" players, as was reported earlier this year.
Tsunoda's answer: Look at Dance Central. Said Tsunoda, "Dance Central is already incorporating a lot more than two players," adding that "it's not necessarily any kind of limitation as much as it is developers just trying to customize the experiences around what they think is the best way to play." Furthermore, Tsunoda noted that it can be difficult to work loads of players into a game's design, but reiterated that Dance Central is "already incorporating more than two."
Not satisfied, we contacted Harmonix for further clarification on this issue. Read the response after the break.

Man, leakers don't sleep! That hush-hush Kinect beta program is indeed in full effect, and while hardware is en route to giddy testers, the accompanying Xbox 360 Dashboard update has already been distributed -- and promptly leaked. Joystiq has a gallery of screenshots from the new interface, including a revamped Avatar editor and some navigational alterations to account for using your body as the controller. We like this just for the humor value, including the note above instructing you to take a break if you get "sore" and the full-page list of prohibitions against talking about or showing the beta program's interface. Ah well.

We know Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 7 will have access to Xbox Live, but it looks like their connectivity ambitions between the Xbox 360 and Phone 7 are even loftier than that, including not just turn-based gameplay but eventually real-time multiplayer between Phone 7 games and Xbox 360 games as well.
"So initially we're turn by turn-based," said a Microsoft representative to rgbFilter during the recent X10 event in Toronto (via Joystiq). "We are working on real-time phone-to-console, likely initially through Wi-Fi -- again, operator networks are sensitive to that. That's not on day one; day one will be turn-by-turn as well as companion-type gaming where you play a level on the phone and it may unlock a level or a weapon or some special achievement on the console game.

August 26th, 2010, 22:47 Posted By: wraggster
The quality of sound that comes through Xbox 360 headsets will be significantly improved when Microsoft updates the Xbox 360 this Fall.
The refresh, designed to coincide with the launch of Kinect, will upgrade the codec and audio infrastructure that underpins the quality of voice communication from Xbox 360 to Xbox 360, and should make for clear chat between gamers when they play online, Xbox Live Studios boss Jerry Johnson said at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival this afternoon.
"The codec we used when we first launched was a low bit rate codec and we stuck with that," Johnson explained.
"We launched and we said we required broadband. We required a 64k connection, which not many people think of as broadband any longer. But that was the minimum requirement to run the service at the time.
"It's time for us to move on. Especially if we want to think about broadening - a crackly headset on the top of your head – not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment."
Microsoft introduced voice communication to the original Xbox with the November 2002 launch of Xbox Live.
The quality of sound has long been the focus of complaints from gamers, particularly those who favour team based multiplayer titles.
Some even prefer to use voice over internet protocol Skype to ensure every word is heard.

August 26th, 2010, 22:46 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has reassured gamers that it remains committed to the hardcore as it broadens the appeal of the Xbox Live online platform.
The hardcore are "the best advocate" of the Xbox 360's movie, telly and music features, Xbox Live Studios boss Jerry Johnson told an audience at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival.
"I know there's a lot of controversy over, are you turning your back on the core gamer? Are you just focused on the Wii bunch? My answer to that is an emphatic no," he said.
"The reason I say that is because I realise that Live was built on the back of the core gamer. It was built to benefit the core gamer, and it was built solely focused on the core gamer when it was originally launched.
"We also know that is our best advocate to continue to grow our user base and grow the engagement with Live."
Johnson used the Sky Player, launched last year, as an example of how core gamers are helping casual gamers discover content on the Xbox 360.
"My wife never let me have an Xbox in the bedroom. Probably not a bad rule, but that was the rule. When Sky launched all of a sudden she was like, you can bring the Xbox in the bedroom. It's okay because I can watch movies on them.
"My wife probably would have never found out about Sky or wouldn't have known about it or wouldn't have even entertained the idea unless I had been there and shown her some of these things.
"We see this time and time again. Those are the people who are reaching out and sharing this with others.
"So, we are still squarely focused on the core, and building mechanics that appeal to the core. But also realising that is a path to actually reach up to the broader audience."
Xbox Live, launched on the original Xbox in November 2002, now enjoys around 25 million active members.
Microsoft will update all the applications currently running on the service around the time of the November launch of motion sensing add-on Kinect.
"Kinect, we believe, introduces the ability to interact with content in a way people haven't even imagined yet," Johnson said.
"There are a lot of different things you'll see that one might expect from Kinect, but some of the magic is going to come from the things that people don't expect."
At gamescom last week Microsoft announced that 60 Windows 7 phone games will be Live enabled and have access to Gamerscore, Achievements and Avatars.
Johnson said Xbox Live will continue to evolve beyond the Xbox 360.
"Expanding into other devices is key to what we're doing. Continuing to take Live broader than the console has always been part of the core concept."

August 26th, 2010, 22:45 Posted By: wraggster
Xbox Live Studios Soho general manager Jerry Johnson has equated the uptake of Sky Player for the Xbox 360 to that of a top-five retail game.
"If Sky was a title in the UK market, it would be one of the top played titles on an evergreen basis. It's not Call of Duty, but it's up there as one of the top five or ten titles on a consistent basis over time," said Johnson during a talk at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival today.
Microsoft launched the Sky Player, which allowed gamers to watch Sky Movies, Sky Sports and other marquee channels for an additional fee, in October last year. The service was temporarily suspended after it was crippled by unexpected demand on day one.
"It's doing really well," Johnson told sister site Eurogamer.net ahead of his Edinburgh presentation.
"One of the things we're really proud of is the uptake on the party modes, especially around live television. While we don't release specific numbers, we're seeing on a live programme double digit percentages of people watching are in rooms of more than two people.
"When we hit major events or live events like a Premier League football game, we can even see those numbers double. "It's a success, especially for a first run at this. As we start to work at [Kinect], we're going to open up the ability to communicate while watching television. It's a no brainer that this thing is is going to continue to take off."
Microsoft has promised more in-broadcast communication tools for Sky Player users
Johnson also maintained that this November's launch of the Kinect motion controller would not impact Live's dedication to core gamers.
"We also know that is our best advocate to continue to grow our user base and grow the engagement with Live.. but also realising that is a path to actually reach up to the broader audience."
He went on to confirm that, despite this, Kinect would play a major part in the continued evolution of Live.
"Kinect, we believe, introduces the ability to interact with content in a way people haven't even imagined yet. There are a lot of different things you'll see that one might expect from Kinect, but some of the magic is going to come from the things that people don't expect."
The Xbox 360 itself would not be the sole home of Live, however. While attempts to launch the service on PC have been met with a poor response, at GamesCom last week Microsoft announced 60 Live-enabled games for its Windows 7-series smartphones.
"Expanding into other devices is key to what we're doing," said Johnson today. "Continuing to take Live broader than the console has always been part of the core concept."

Microsoft will once again be hosting the keynote at this year's Tokyo Game Show, with Home and Entertainment head Takashi Sensui and Game Studio vice president Phil Spencer taking the stage on the morning of the show's opening day, September 16.
Currently, the keynote has a working title of "Xbox 360's Vision and 2010's Strategy", although this is subject to confirmation.
As per usual, there will also be a second keynote speech at the event, which has yet to be announced. The last time Microsoft representatives gave the speech was in 2008, when John Schappert gave a talk entitled 'A Canvas for the World'.
Last year's Keynote was delivered by Kaz Hirai, although the biggest announcement it has played host to in recent years was Satoru Iwata's unveiling of the Wiimote in 2005.

August 25th, 2010, 23:23 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft Corp. will continue to offer the Xbox 360 for the next five years, expanding the lifespan of the console to 10 years, said Chris Lewis, vice president for interactive entertainment business in Europe.
The company is trying to lengthen the Xbox 360’s shelf life with new features and services, such as the motion-sensing Kinect device, in a bid to wring more profit from the machine. Consoles are typically unprofitable in their first few years because the cost of materials takes time to drop. The Kinect accessory goes on sale in November.
“Kinect really gives us, I think, a very genuine additional five years,” Lewis said in an interview today at the Gamescom computer-games fair in Cologne, Germany. “What Kinect does is broaden us out to users that we weren’t addressing in the past.”
Microsoft’s decision marks a change in strategy from the first Xbox generation, when Microsoft released a new model after just four years. Rival makers of gaming consoles are adopting a similar approach. Yesterday, Sony Corp. Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai said he thinks the PlayStation 3 will also have a 10-year life, helped by his company’s own motion-sensing controller. That device, called Move, comes out in September.
Different Technologies
Both companies are playing catch-up with Nintendo Co., whose motion-activated Wii controller helped give it the lead in the market. With Sony and Nintendo’s approach, the user moves the controller to direct the game. Microsoft’s Kinect is a box that sits near the console and tracks the movement of the player’s body several feet away.
Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, might release a new console while the Xbox 360 is still on sale, “but we’re not fixated on that right now,” Lewis said.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has said the release of his company’s next-generation console hinges on 3-D features. The company may wait until more than 30 percent of televisions in homes have 3-D capability. Microsoft’s Lewis also said it’s too early for 3-D gaming to take off.
“We are two to three years away from that, till the price point comes down, till the experience is sufficiently social, that you don’t sit there with big glasses on and don’t talk to your family,” he said. “That will happen, there’s no doubt.”
Xbox Live
The current Xbox’s popularity is supported by the Live online gaming service, which probably broke the $1 billion revenue mark for the first time in the past fiscal year. Lewis declined to give sales figures for the service.
Xbox Live, which currently has 25 million users, gets one new user every five seconds, Lewis said. The subscription base rose by more than 30 percent in the fiscal year ended in June, he said. “We anticipate to grow by at least the same rate -- if not faster -- this year,” Lewis said.
At Gamescom, Microsoft announced that the service will be available in an additional nine countries, including Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic. That brings the total to 35.
Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division, mostly made up of sales from Xbox and mobile-phone software, had revenue of $8.06 billion in the past fiscal year, or 13 percent of the company’s total. Profit for the unit rose more than sixfold to $678 million.

Doctors fear console addict Zach Richardson could be doing himself serious harm as he stays glued to a tiny TV set seven days a week.
Unemployed Zach, 17, plays favourites Call of Duty and FIFA on his Xbox for up to ten hours at a time.
He even plays football manager games on his PC at the SAME time and is so hooked he often doesn't WASH.
Zach's gaming marathon begins at 9am each day, he skips lunch and finally relinquishes the controllers and turns in during the early hours of the morning.
He is wracked by headaches and blackouts which doctors blame on his addiction.
He said: "I left school more than a year ago and had nothing to do, so I turned to video games to fill the days while I searched for a job.
"It started off slowly. I only spent two or three hours a day playing. It was just for a bit of fun.
"Now it has got out of control and I know I have an addiction but I cannot help it. I know I need help to kick the habit."
He said: "It is really distressing but I just cannot help it."
Zach, from Fareham, Hants, doesn't leave the house for days, school friends have started shunning him and girlfriend Sarah Perry, 17, is threatening to dump him.
Mum Lois Richardson said: "There is nothing that I can do to stop him playing.
"Doctors have warned him of the health risks but playing video games is the only thing that makes him happy.
"I do not want to upset him by taking his consoles away."

August 25th, 2010, 21:50 Posted By: wraggster
Ubisoft, Europe's number two publishing company, has said that it doesn't expect either Move or Kinect will be able to extend the life-cycle of the current generation of home consoles.
European MD Alain Corre told GamesIndustry.biz that he expects the peripherals from Sony and Microsoft will help lift the market in the short-term, but next year's big hardware success story is likely to be Nintendo's 3DS.
"I don't think so, no," said Corre when asked if either peripheral can stretch the current cycle beyond another 24 months.
"Yes, it's a good extension of the lifecycle for a certain length of time and it's also a good way to capture some consumers they didn't have on the casual side, because Microsoft's 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 do not have the casual customers. So it will bring in a new category of customer for them.
"Now, will it prevent them from releasing brand new technology in the next five years? I don't think so," he added.
Any lack of long-term support will be a blow to the format holders, who have both invested significantly in extending the life of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this generation.
However, the desire to keep current consoles breathing for another five years - a plan expressed by Microsoft’s European boss Chris Lewis - doesn't seem realistic to Ubisoft.
Instead, the publisher expects both companies are already marching on with the development of new hardware.
It's Nintendo's release of a 3D handheld system that has really captured the publisher's imagination, with Corre suggesting the 3DS can be a "monster success" next year.
Ubisoft has Ghost Recon, Driver, Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed games ready for the 3DS launch.
"We're very confident that the machine will lift the handheld market, which is what we need," said Corre.
Ubisoft is working on six titles for the as-yet unannounced launch of the system, and Corre detailed that even though the company has been working alongside Nintendo for a long time on new products, the 3DS was still able to hold surprises during development.
"They surprised us even in the end, even though we had a lot of information and were able to get ahead in the development of our games, they still surprised us each time they bring a new feature that we didn't know about."

We had a feeling that Microsoft recognized the potential in phone-to-console gaming, but during our recent hands-on time with Windows Phone 7, reps kept mum on the subject. The same can't be said for at least one rep during Microsoft's recent X10 event in Toronto -- that's in Canadia, in case you were wondering -- who confirmed the functionality to WMPoweruser during a video interview showcasing the new OS.
"So initially we're turn by turn-based," the rep said, referring to the phone-to-phone multiplayer capabilities on day one. But, uh yeah -- absolutely working on phone-to-console real-time. That is something we're working on and expect to have in the near future."
The video interview -- which you can watch just past the break -- also mentions gameplay between the PC and phone "using the Xbox Live infrastructure," where the rep references Shadow Run as an example. Skip to around 10:30 for the really juicy stuff.

There aren't many unresolved mysteries with Microsoft's new console by this point -- apart from perhaps why it wasn't named the Stealthbox, like we were suggesting -- but one thing that hasn't been covered in excruciating detail yet is the new 360's splicing of the CPU and GPU into the same chip. Microsoft has remedied that today, informing us that the 45nm system-on-chip (codenamed Vejle; sorry, Valhalla fans) inside the refreshed Xbox makes do with a relatively minimal 372 million transistors, requiring only 40 percent of the power and less than 50 percent of the die space of its 2005 ancestor. A somewhat bemusing addition, noted by Ars, is the FSB Replacement sector you see in the image above. It's designed to induce lag in the system so that the Vejle chip doesn't run faster than the old stuff, something Microsoft couldn't allow to happen. Facepalm away, good people, facepalm away.
