Shortly before Kinect hits store shelves on November 4th, Microsoft plans on rolling out the Fall Update to Xbox Live -- even sooner for those who signed up for the preview program. That shouldn't come as much of a surprise, really: even without the numerous leaks, the fall update is a longstanding tradition for the almost five-year-old console, and the company devoted a large chunk of its E3 2010 presentation to talk about the biggest additions. That includes Netflix search (finally!), Zune music, and an entertainment hub for a certain worldwide sports broadcaster... ESPN.

Microsoft has claimed that it removed a processor from Kinect because there was "no need" to have it in the peripheral.
It emerged in January that MS had ditched a standalone processor in the camera - which some have claimed has subsequently affected performance.
Kinect now relies on the processing power of the Xbox itself - although the platform holder has claimed that it uses "less than one per cent" of the 360's motherboard.
"We didn't know how much processing Kinect was going to take at the start of development," Kinect creative boss Kudo Tsunoda told the new Xbox World 360.
"Obviously you don't want to lose any of the things that are important to Xbox customers. Graphic fidelity is something that Xbox has always been known for, and you want to make sure that you still hit that level.
"Forza is a graphical showpiece, and we had Forza with Kinect at E3... the graphic fidelity has actually improved in some areas from what they shipped with Forza 3. It's still running at 60 FPS and it's supporting Kinect, so there's just no need to have that extra processor."
When asked why Kinect detected less points on the player's body than it did last year, Tsunoda added:
"As you start building the stuff, you're like: 'Wow, to track everything in the human body we can do less points. That's just normal game development. Anything you do with games, you want the processing power to be used as efficiently as possible to get the experience that you want."
Kinect launches in the UK on November 10 and the US on November 4.

September 29th, 2010, 22:21 Posted By: wraggster
This autumn's Xbox Live update will allow Xbox 360 owners to video chat with PC owners using Kinect. Suddenly, £130 seems like pennies.
Marc Whitten, Xbox Live general manager, was "excited" to confirm the feature in an open letter published today.
But most of his address concerned the big-ticket additions of ESPN telly (for the US) and Zune music (for UK, US, France, Italy and Spain).
Announced last week, Zune music offers millions of songs for stream or download providing you cough up £8.99 for a monthly Zune Pass. That's on top of your Gold Xbox Live subscription. We later found out that if your Zune Pass sub lapses, all of the songs you've downloaded will be locked and inaccessible until you reactivate.
Incidentally, while part of the Zune Marketplace, Zune music will be separate to Zune video. A Zune Pass offers unlimited access to music, and music only.
Also coming in this autumn's XBL update will be a "refreshed" dashboard and new Xbox Live Family Settings, for those of you that use them.
"Every year we've pushed ourselves to deliver the best games and entertainment," wrote Whitten, "and I'm incredibly proud of my team and what we're delivering to Xbox Live this fall."
"Our goal is to continue innovating and delivering experiences that are meaningful to you. So you can enjoy the entertainment you want, with the people you care about, in a simple way. Keep playing, keep sharing, and keep pushing us."

Kinect’s launch line-up provides no foretoken to the wild ideas that the peripheral will provide in the future, a tech executive at Rare believes.
Nick Burton admitted that Kinect’s software launch line-up has an understandable air of predictability – with its sports and family titles – but insisted the tech had too much potential for it not to summon bold ideas from developers.
“With the launch of Kinect it was obvious to make the sort of heart-on-sleeve titles. Sports, family games, and so on,” he told Develop.
“But six months after the obvious games are done, that’s when the crazy ideas will come through.
“I think now we’re just waiting to see what people are hooked by, what they’re amazed by. We’re waiting for people to have that ‘holy shit’ moment. Even people that are tech savvy, we’re waiting for them to go ‘how the hell does that work?’”
Turning the subject to Rare itself, Burton suggested the studio was raring to get the green light on some of its own Kinect ideas.
“Just because we’re working on a sports title doesn’t mean that we don’t already have really bonkers ideas waiting to be worked on,” he said.
Burton insisted that the motion-tracking feature of Kinect was “the tip of the iceberg”.
“It can track twenty-odd points of a person’s body, but then you’ve got the depth information, the colour information, the audio stream – you put all these together and there are so many possibilities,” he said.
“The example I always use is working out who’s speaking in a room. Kinect has an array microphone – which works out where noises are coming from quite easily. But also, using the depth, colour and tracking information, Kinect can work out the size and appearance of who’s speaking, and suddenly it can mark a certain voice to a single person.
“That’s a few lines of code.
“It’s pretty exciting to think about the possibilities in joining all this tech together; figuring out what you can do.
“And I suppose what’s key is that these ideas, these techniques, will over time become easier for developers to implement.”

September 28th, 2010, 17:51 Posted By: wraggster
There will be no Kinect stock available to buy in the UK come launch day on November 10 - according to the stores of national retailer GAME.
Numerous GAME outlets are today telling customers that the Xbox peripheral will definitely be sold out by November 10.
Confusingly, the retailer's head office seems to disagree - informing CVG that it is not aware of any such shortage. However, the HQ has admitted that the peripheral has the "potential to sell out on release day".
According to one GAME store manager contacted by CVG, the retailer delivered the news to staff at is behind-closed-doors national conference last week.
CVG has spoken to five GAME stores across the UK this afternoon - which all gave us the same message.
Every one reiterated that the only way we'll be able to pick up Kinect is if we've booked a pre-order - and that they're running out fast.
"Microsoft hasn't sent us enough us Kinect units to fulfil all pre-orders and there still won't be enough for launch day," one sales rep told us. "The message has gone round to all GAME stores."
Another told us it was "guaranteed" that there would be no stock on launch day. One even forecast that we'd have to wait until after Christmas to buy one - something "categorically denied" by GAME HQ.
A GAME spokesperson told CVG: "We are not aware of any potential stock shortages with Kinect and are working with Microsoft to meet expected demand.
"We do anticipate Kinect to be incredibly popular and it absolutely has the potential to sell out on release day. As a result, customers who want to get their hands on Kinect at launch really need to pre-order to guarantee that they get it."
Sales reps at entertainment giant HMV said they had received no such message from their HQ - and that they expected Kinect to be in stock in November.
The news points to heavy demand for Microsoft's new piece of kit - and a possible emulation of the UK Wii launch in 2006.
The Nintendo console was out of stock at retailers throughout the Christmas period - which only served to push demand higher as word-of-mouth spread.
GAME and Microsoft will no doubt be hoping that a similar consumer fear of losing out drives sales of Kinect.

It has already claimed that Kinect will enjoy a stronger launch than Xbox 360 and that it will “blow away” the iPad. Now Microsoft has claimed that Kinect is going to be the biggest ever hardware sales launch ever.
“We are investing in this like we've never invested in a platform launch,” Microsoft Game Studios’ corporate vice president Phil Spencer told Edge.
“This is, for us, the biggest platform launch in the history of the industry.
“We want to sell more units than any console has ever sold in its first holiday, a new platform. Our retail partners are telling us, based on the consumer demand ‘this is going to be the number one consumer electronics purchase this holiday’. Not just in the games space, all of them.
“So this, for us, is bigger than Xbox launch, bigger than 360 launch - this is a big deal for us. How many units are we going to sell? We're completely goaled in investing as if this were the biggest console launch ever, and that's our expectation.”
In July MCV spoke to a number of retailers who had reported a boom in the number of pre-orders that they have received for the Kinect.
The big-promise strategy is in direct contrast to the slow-and-steady approach pursued by Sony for its recently launched PlayStation Move controller.
Earlier this month Sony UK marketing manager Adam Boita told MCV: “Pre-orders are always important, but Move is not necessarily a pre-order product. It’s not like Halo or World of Warcraft expansions, where people want to get hold of it day one. It is an evergreen product. And whereas pre-orders are very important, it is not necessarily the key focus.”

Hey, you EU folks may not have Netflix over there, but you've got the next best thing: Sky Player. Eurogamer reports that Kinect voice commands -- one of the most lauded pieces of functionality in the upcoming Microsoft peripheral -- are coming to the Sky Player streaming service. Even better, the two will play nice right at Kinect launch in Europe, on November 10.
According to Eurogamer, users will be able to use voice commands to pause, rewind, fast-forward, play and stop, much like the integration detailed back during E3, though there's currently no official word from Sky Player. We're currently reaching out and will let you know what we hear back.

From the MS press release:
[QUOTE]
Brands are jumping in to a new era of engaging and connecting with consumers. Microsoft Advertising today announced at Advertising Week 2010 that a full lineup of forward-thinking companies is bringing its brands to Kinect for Xbox 360, the new controller-free gaming and entertainment experience that responds to body movement and transforms how people play, entertain and connect with family members and friends. Chevrolet, Sprint and T-Mobile USA Inc. will each launch respective ad campaigns throughout the Kinect console experience, “Kinect Sports,” “Kinect Adventures” and “Kinect Joy Ride” game titles.
“With Kinect for Xbox 360, we are removing the last barrier to interactive television — the controller,” said Mark Kroese, general manager of the Interactive Entertainment Advertising Business Group at Microsoft. “We have seen tremendous momentum from the advertising community, including big campaigns from Chevrolet, Sprint and T-Mobile. These visionary marketers are leading the entertainment revolution with ground-breaking campaigns that are highly engaging.”
Advertising campaigns will commence with the much-anticipated North America launch of Kinect on Nov. 4:
* Chevrolet. As announced in June, Chevrolet is the first automaker to launch a multiscreen ad campaign that allows consumers to test-drive Chevrolet vehicles in “Kinect Joy Ride,” the first controller-free racing game from Microsoft Game Studios. When Kinect for Xbox 360 launches this fall, consumers will have the opportunity to take the test-drive concept to a new level by driving the Chevrolet Volt in “Kinect Joy Ride.” Also, after viewing the video advertisement in-dash on Xbox LIVE or on the Web, consumers will be able to unlock and download Chevrolet Cruze, Camaro and Corvette cars to drive in the game. Chevrolet will then kick off the new year with an ad campaign in the Kinect Hub showcasing the same vehicles.
* Sprint. As a longstanding and pioneering Xbox LIVE advertiser, Sprint understands the value of connecting with the Xbox community. This fall, Sprint is sponsoring the launch of “Kinect Adventures” with a co-branded retail experience on Xbox LIVE and a sponsored contest in which “Kinect Adventures” players have the chance to get their pictures featured on Xbox LIVE. Consumers attending New York Comic Con can play “Kinect Adventures” at the Sprint booth.
* T-Mobile. Another Xbox advertising pioneer, T-Mobile is taking advantage of the immersive user experience in “Kinect Sports” with fixed product placement throughout the games including volleyball net signage, custom bowling balls and foam fingers held by the arena audience. T-Mobile is further supporting the game title through a sponsorship on the Xbox 360 console. Xbox members can visit a website on the dashboard to access exclusive video content and participate in the first launch weekend Play & Win contest with prizes including Family Gold memberships. Also, during the holidays T-Mobile will support “Kinect Sports” Play & Win programs with two Xbox Family Game Nights in November and January.

The Sky Player service, which allows Xbox Live Gold account holders to watch certain Sky satellite programs live and on demand via their Xbox, is to receive full Kinect support from launch - allowing full motion and voice control of the player.
Microsoft's motion control and sensing device has been officially priced at £130 and will hit shops in the UK on November 10, 2010. Basic Sky Player packages are available from £15 per month.
"Selecting a favourite show, changing live channels, or easily scrolling forward and back through on-demand content is all made possible by a simple wave of a hand," said Microsoft's press release.
"Kinect for Sky Player on Xbox 360 will also let viewers control TV with their voice to pause, fast forward, rewind and play content."

Upcoming Xbox Live Arcade platform game Super Meat Boy will be capable of downloading additional content which sidesteps Microsoft's standard approval processes.
By using the Title Managed Storage system, developers Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes (aka Team Meat) will be able to push new levels to the game, which players can download for free.
Because all new content is made using a standardised level creation tool, Microsoft will allow additional levels to be made available without going through the certification it otherwise forces onto all DLC.
"In a world where it costs $2 to unlock content in a game that you've already purchased," explained Refenes, "it is nice to have the power to totally say 'f--- you' to that system and go our own way."
Microsoft has not been resistant to Team Meat's unorthodox methods, Refenes claimed. "In the end they actually welcomed it because they want developers to do anything and everything with their service that makes them stand out.
"No one has ever done anything like this in the history of XBLA as far as we and our people at MS know." Team Meat have released a schedule of planned approval-free DLC running early next year.
Following the later release of a PC version with a level editor, the pair also intend to publish the best user-made content to the XBLA edition of Super Meat Boy.
