Splinter Cell producer Mathieu Ferland believes that Ubisoft's decision to reinvent the famed stealth series - ditching much of its light-and-shadow gameplay - will ultimately be vindicated by player reaction, despite the obvious risk.
"We've been working very closely with the fans from the beginning," Ferland told GamesIndustry.biz. "Their first reaction was, 'What's going on? Where's Sam?' And then they discovered these new possibilities, this new mechanic and they said, 'That looks awesome. I want to play it.'"
However, the producer admitted that Ubisoft could return to past values if things go wrong with Conviction, the fifth game in the series.
"It's not a one-way direction," he confirmed. "You can always go back and do different things, having Sam in a new position, or a different character to explore light-and-shadow gameplay."
Whereas past games were about avoiding detection in highly-charged situations, Conviction puts protagonist Sam Fisher on the run from the law, and forces players to mingle in crowds, overcoming enemies through confrontation and distraction rather than evasion.
It also reduces the number of complex controls players will need to master, using context-sensitive Aggression, Stealth and Interaction buttons rather than a broad range of button combinations.
"To us, it's a nice way to expand the brand," Ferland said of the overall approach, "because Ubisoft is a nice company and you can push it hard with innovation, especially in Splinter Cell, and sometimes when you want to push innovation you need to adapt your creative direction to fit the kind of gameplay you want to provide."
Ferland also said that he had been encouraged by the reaction he received from trade and press during the game's demonstration at the UbiDays showcase in Paris last week.
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction is due to appear on PC and Xbox 360 later this year.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena presents a reinvention of 2004's Escape from Butcher Bay in HD, enhancements, as well as adding the Dark Athena chapter, an expansion of the original game with an exciting new story and new gameplay features.
With The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, players will not only be challenged to survive Butcher Bay, but will also engage in a new single-player experience and, for the first time in the Riddick universe, take action in intense multi-player combat. The game introduces the ominous Merc-ship Dark Athena, which sits silent like a marauding spider, awaiting helpless prey in the dark reaches of the galaxy. Players must face a large, bloodthirsty operation led by the dreaded Captain Revas and her slaves-turned-controllable combat drones, storm though death-defying events and fight fierce enemies in a battle of malice and gore.
First released in 2004, The Chronicles of Riddick game features an original storyline that provides insight into the mythology of Universal Pictures' films The Chronicles of Riddick and the cult classic Pitch Black, which first introduced Vin Diesel as enigmatic anti-hero Riddick. The game blends action and stealth elements, as players navigate Riddick through the harsh environments of dank tunnels, dimly lit corridors, and other hazardous areas filled with guards, savage inmates and deadly creatures that prowl the darkness.
Moving and attacking in darkness is particularly effective for Riddick as his haunting "eye shine" gives him the ability to see without ambient light. However, stealth won't serve every situation and players will be able to take the action up close and personal. As Riddick, players will be able to sneak up behind enemies and snap necks or fight face to face using fists, elbows and grapples. Additionally, players will be able to capture weapons such as shanks, shotguns, or assault rifles and use these to cut a swath of destruction through anyone who gets in their way.
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is scheduled to ship later in 2007

Microsoft has sent word that their Xbox 360 exclusive game, Tenchu Z has gone gold and will hit stores across North America on June 12, 2007. The ninja stealth action game features more than 50 missions set in ancient Japan.
Tenchu Z is set in feudal Japan and reflects the Ninja mythology. Gamers must integrate stealth, sword-based warfare and the skill to make use of an extensive variety of ninja accessories to complete their objectives. The gameplay is based on their actions and takes into account how much noise they make, how visible they are, and even how badly they smell. There is a single player mission as well as co-operative play with two to four players through Xbox Live or system link. They can even create customizable ninjas.
Tenchu Z has been developed by K2. It will come with a price tag of $59.99 (approx. Rs. 2,420). Tenchu Z is one of the three Japan-themed games by Microsoft that will release for the Xbox 360. The other two are Vampire Rain and Project Sylpheed.

DIRT: Colin McRae Off-Road is set to be the most diverse and exhilarating off-road racing experience ever with sensational gravel, mud and dirt events the world over.
Events will include the series' intense point-to-point races and then take players further off-road than ever before.
Race in challenging heavyweight 850bhp cars, drifting on the loose gravel and high-speed blind corners of Hill Climb events along perilous cliff edges. All 12.4 miles of the world famous Pikes Peak International is included, with over 150 precarious turns to negotiate through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
How about engaging in multiple car races with Dakar-style trucks and super-powered 4x4s on the toughest desert terrain in Rally Raid competitions? Then there are Rally Cross events, switching between dirt and road racing, where the competition is always tight, fast and collisions with your opponents are inevitable.
With more off-road racing styles to be revealed, DIRT: Colin McRae Off-Road will also offer a dedicated mode for European, International and Global rally championships featuring official 2WD, 4WD, Classic and RWD rally cars.
DIRT: Colin McRae Off-Road will deliver the wheel-screaming exhilaration of off-road racing with the next generation of the series' sublime car handling and physics system and a devastating new damage engine that ensures players experience every bump in the track, every loose rock, every inch of shifting dirt through the reactive environments.
With an incredible range of off-road vehicles, thrill-packed tracks, modes that make the most of online multiplayer, and more varied events than any other single-championship rally game, Colin McRae is being reborn as a bigger, faster, wilder racing experience.
Codemasters revealed that DIRT will now add races from the U.S.-based C.O.R.R. (Championship Off-Road Racing) series to its already heady mix of Rally, Hill Climb, Rally Raid, Rally Cross and Crossover events. DIRT is planned to launch this June for the Xbox and the PC, with the PS3 edition following shortly thereafter.
Already set to deliver an exhilarating thrill ride through a massive variety of off-road racing experiences, DIRT's new C.O.R.R. events see up to 10 drivers going head-to-head in fierce off-road circuit races. The combination powerful vehicles, including Super Buggies and Pro 4 Trucks, along with tracks packed full of tabletop jumps, drop-offs and moguls will make for an intoxicating mix of racing action and will test players' driving skills to the limit.
In addition, gamers will be able to relive those intense and often breathtaking moments behind the wheel with stunning replays. DIRT's replay system includes dynamic cameras that follow, capture and focus on the most exciting moments during each race, and for the first time in the series players are given full control over the replays action.
Get ready for total mud splattering, gravel churning, handbrake turning, off-road racing in DIRT: Colin McRae Off-Road, coming June 2007 for PS3, Xbox360 and PC.

A Swedish gaming magazine by the name of Super Play is either trying to stir up a lot of trouble or has one hell of an inside source as they have stated that Metal Gear Solid 4 will not be a PS3 exclusive as it will also be headed to the Xbox 360.
This rumor has been something which has been circulating for quite some time nown with some truth to it at first followed by the rumor being squashed. Hideo Kojima has come out in the past stating that Metal Gear Solid 4 would be an exclusive to the PS3. The thought process though was that it could be an exclusive and still come out on the Xbox 360 as long as there was a time-frame between the releases of the game.
The PS3 version is scheduled to be out fairly soon as the magazine reported that the Xbox 360 version could be expected by the end of 2008. The magazine stated that the Xbox 360 version of the game is going to feature bonus features including VR missions and possible added online play.
These type of rumors have been circulating for quite some time but the magazine is passing it off as a fact. More as it breaks on this development. If true, this could be a huge blow to Sony and the PlayStation 3.

As part of their launch party fun, the charitable devs over on the Shadowrun team are holding a few screenshot caption contests where the winners will be invited to play with the team on launch day. If your sense of humor is top notch, then they want you to create the funniest caption for the three Shadowrun screenshots that they've posted on the forums. The funniest caption from each contest will get an invite to frag with the dev team in a private Shadowrun match on launch day via Xbox Live. And all winners will also receive a rockin' Shadowrun tshirt. But you must hurry, because screenshot caption entries must be submitted by tomorrow night at 10:00PM eastern. And don't forget to be all funny and stuff.

Just bought an Xbox 360 racing wheel after the price drop last week? Well take a look at this setup reader Robert's friend gave himself for his birthday and drool.
Not only does it have a leather racing chair, the Xbox 360 racing wheel and 5.1 surround speakers, he somehow got the display to split over three Samsung HDTVs. Our only question is how the hell did he do that? We didn't know PGR supported multi-monitors.

Entertainment giants are battling for domination of the next generation of DVDs but an outright win is an unlikely outcome, reports Kate Bulkley.
Via TheAge.com.au
If it was a Hollywood movie it would be a remake of Alien v Predator. On one side is the giant Sony corporation, which is backing the Blu-ray high definition DVD format by building it into its PlayStation 3 games consoles. Facing it across the global battlefield is Toshiba, backed by Microsoft and Intel, promoting the rival (and incompatible) HD DVD format.
The stakes are very high indeed for both companies. Yet Sony, the pre-fight favourite because it has the best-selling games console franchise in the world and the backing of seven Hollywood studios (basically all of the big ones except Universal Pictures), which have made their movies available on Blu-ray, is nowhere near delivering the early knockout blow it was hoping for.
Instead, early defections from the Blu-ray camp and lagging sales of PS3 consoles have blurred the picture of which format will win. Samsung broke ranks with Blu-ray last month by announcing it will make players that play both HD formats, following a similar move by LG. In addition, most analysts acknowledge that the PC manufacturers will play a key role in the format war - and having Microsoft and Intel behind HD DVD is significant. Neither of these Toshiba allies has shown signs of switching camps so far.
Meanwhile, PS3 sales in Britain, the European market where PS3 has had its most successful launch, were 165,000 in week one but fell to 28,000 in the second week, a trend that has been echoed in other markets as well.
Sony took a big gamble bundling the Blu-ray player with the PS3, resulting in delayed release and higher prices for the consoles. Ken Kutaragi, the "father of the PlayStation", recently paid the price and resigned as chairman and chief executive of the Sony Computer Entertainment unit.
With the sales of PS3 lagging, the new machines may not be the cornerstone of a recovery at Sony, with videogame-related losses for Sony's year ending in March expected to amount to $US2 billion ($2.4 billion) - twice the original expectations.
Sony has a lot riding on the success of the PS3, especially after it was wrong-footed in the music player market by Apple's iPod. It certainly doesn't want to have another Betamax or MiniDisc story, either. For Sony, the PS3 and Blu-ray are part of an important corporate move to regain its pre-eminence in the consumer electronics business.

The increasingly reliable ESRB website has a new 360 game that many might be interested in. It seems Streets of Rage 2 has been reviewed and rated accordingly by the ESRB, which now has “Xbox 360″ written in the Platform box along with the Wii. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the game that is perfect for the Arcade is coming.
Since the game isn’t separated from the Wii version, it’s obvious that the game is the same one that is present on the Wii’s Virtual Console. It won’t be exactly the same though thanks to Microsoft demanding that a few things be put in place first.
Hopefully the game will boast Co-op both locally and across Xbox Live, along with Leaderboards and all the other little things that makes the XBLA just that bit more interesting. This is also another game from the SEGA collection, a collection that was rumoured about earlier in the month. Although we are still awaiting an announcement with regards to Sonic, it’s good to see other decent retro titles coming.

Halo 3 is going to break all sorts of records upon its release later this year, that much is almost certain. The original game single-handedly moved XBoxen from shop shelves for the best part of a year, and its sequel topped the charts both in retail and on Xbox Live. With the second sequel almost upon us, we've taken a look at the multi-player beta.
The first thing you'll notice is the familiarity of it all. The weapon load-out is tweaked here and there, but remains largely unchanged. Your avatar is still the Master Chief, and he's still running around the same rocky, grassy vistas and snowy tundra as in previous games.
Worse, the graphics aren't the giant leap forward one would expect from the blockbuster series' debut on the Xbox 360. There are some nice environmental effects - grenades fling up dirt, water sloshes around you and so on - but the textures aren't sharp, the architecture is perhaps too sharp, and the rocky plains lack real definition. It's not quite last-gen, but it's a far cry from platform-leading visuals.
For this gamer, however, the biggest bone of contention is the community. With only the press and those who have access through the Crackdown promotion currently able to play the beta, it is perhaps too early to judge accurately, but on current conditions, the community is not a very welcoming place. As an American-produced game about a alien-battling space marine, the audience is understandably populated by over-enthusiastic, under-sexed teenagers, who endeavor to suck the fun out of proceedings. Whether it's a problem with the matchmaking-system, the community itself or something else is unknown, but this is a major issue for the casual gamer, and one which will hopefully be addressed upon release.
Based on the beta, Halo 3 is shaping up to be very much evolution over revolution. For fans of the series, of which there are many, this will prove to be enough. For those still on the sidelines, they're likely to be underwhelmed, even put off by those fans who insist on taking things so seriously.

Midway's highly anticipated World War II FPS title, Hour of Victory, will be live and playable for the first time next week via Xbox LIVE® Marketplace. Midway will release an exciting single-player teaser demo on Wednesday, May 30, providing a glimpse of the game's cinematic and frenetic gameplay in advance of Hour of Victory's march to retail stores in June.
The Hour of Victory demo will give the player a sneak peak into the rugged North African level. Players will be able to pick any of the three characters in the game, the Covert Operative, specializing in stealth and sabotage; a British Commando specializing in the guns-blazing frontal assault; or an Army Ranger who specializes in sniping and demolitions.
Hour of Victory allows you to play a key role in the pivotal and cinematic battles from the European and North African theaters of World War II, using the skills and gameplay style you choose. Sneak into enemy territory as a covert operative, storm the gates as a British Commando, or snipe from afar as an Army Ranger. Each character's unique attributes will be needed for the fulfillment of the overall objective. Only with all these skills working closely together will you be able to say that you helped define the Hour of Victory.
Built using the powerful Unreal® Engine 3.0, Hour of Victory combines authentic details from historic World War II battles and adds in frenetic and cinematic gameplay. Players will also be able to take control of any vehicle on the battlefield whenever they wish as they sharpen their skills to impact the key battles from the European and North African Theaters.

Get ready to get dirty. Publisher/developer Codemasters has launched the Colin McRae: DiRT playable demo, now available to download from Xbox Live Marketplace for the Xbox 360. DiRT takes gamers off-road in a multitude of mud-splattered races, and the demo delivers three events to experience right now. There are Crossover, Hill Climb, and C.O.R.R. (Championship Off-Road Racing) events in the Xbox 360 demo.
The first event is a Crossover race with players competing against Colin McRae himself. Players and McRae will battle in a pair of Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec Cs. Then, with nine other racers aggressively competing for position, gamers will compete in a C.O.R.R. competition in V8 650hp buggies at the Bark River Off Road Raceway, Michigan. Next, the Xbox 360 demo takes players for a race to the skies with a Hill Climb event. Churning gravel in a Mitsubishi Evo IX, players race the final 1000 feet of Windy Point in Arizona.
The DiRT demo is available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The full game will be available for the Xbox 360 and PC in mid-June. DiRT will carry an ESRB rating of E for Everyone. A PS3 version is slated for a later release date.
