Akira Yamaoka has worked on Konami's Silent Hill series for a while now. He was producer on the PC version of Silent Hill3, but he's more famed for his work in the sound department. Yamaoka have given a few details on Silent Hill 5 in a recent magazine interview.
"At the moment I cannot reveal much detail on the story, or our progress, but I can tell you that this game will resemble Silent Hill 2 in the terms of the way the player is directed and the characters' behaviour," he told Game Pro magazine.
What platform the game will eventually appear on still seems up I the air. We reported in August 2004 that a final decision for what platform the game would release on wasn't set in stone. It was that long ago we were still calling Xbox 360 Xbox 2!
PlayStation 3 is the obvious target given the history of the series, but with a smaller install base than Xbox 360, could 5 be launching simultaneously on more than one console?
"At this time we are still not sure," confessed Yamaoka . "We are thinking of putting the next game on the next generation consoles like PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but we have had a good past experience with PlayStation [where the series was born] and we hope to continue that trend, but there are no definite plans as of yet."

Yesterday, in a post on Infinity Ward's official forums, admin fourzerotwo hinted at a major announcement that will be coming next week. More specifically, fourzerotwo listed important events in history that occurred on April 28th (like the discovery of a vaccine for the yellow fever) and followed by saying that "what goes down this April 28th is equal to, if not surpasses, the magnitude of any of those". Yup, Infinity Ward's April 28th announcement is going to be bigger than James Monroe's birthday! So, will the news be something as simple as some more Call of Duty 4 details or are you thinking something on a much more grand scale? Speculate away ...

If the Xbox 360 has one consistent complaint, it is undoubtedly the cost of its peripherals. In particular, the price of its hard drive has been the most difficult to stomach. $99 dollars for 20 gigabytes seems positively ludicrous in today's world of cheap storage. The new 120GB hard drive isn't much better, clocking in at $179. Microsoft has defended the pricing structure, saying that they demand very strict specifications from manufacturers (things like drive speed, security, etc.), but it's hard to believe it couldn't be had for less.
Enter one lucky 360 fanboy by the name of Scooter. Scooter spotted a 120GB hard drive at his local Wal-Mart. Looking closer, the drive was priced at a cool $99.88. Seizing upon the opportunity, he asked a clerk to open up the case and ring it up. Of course, once the item was scanned, it came up as $172. After a quick interchange with customer service, it's revealed that Wal-Mart store policy requires that items be sold for the price at which they are marked (even if the price is incorrect). So, he walks out with a 120GB drive for a full $80 less than retail price.
Granted, we're sure the display price was corrected immediately following the sale, but it's nice to hear that at least one fanboy managed to stick it to the man. Our advice: scour your area Wal-Marts for mislabeled hard drives. You might end up with a killer deal.

Investor adviser Roger Ehrenberg believes Microsoft's foray into gaming has been a "disastrous endeavour", and that it should rethink its entire strategy.
His conclusion was based on "objective numbers" taken from the Microsoft's financial statements, which show a total loss of USD 5.4 billion from its efforts.
"Microsoft needs to take a long, hard look at its gaming strategy: and, in fact, its entire H&E [Home and Entertainment] strategy," Ehrenberg stated on Forbes.com. "At what point, regardless of its virtually endless financial resources, does it say 'enough is enough'?"
"Would we have been better served by returning the extra cash to shareholders rather than investing it in a franchise that seems to have questionable prospects for turning around? These are the kinds of questions Microsoft management should be asking. And hopefully, for shareholders' sakes, they are."
Apparently the company's focus on hardcore gamers has left it with a dwindling user base. If it continues with the same strategy then he believes it will have a problem. Instead, Ehrenberg reckons, it should take a long hard look at Nintendo's master plan, with a mass-market approach and cheaper console.
He even cites EA as measure of how successful a particular console is considered to be, believing that the more games the publisher throws at the hardware the more important it is. Which makes us scratch our heads, because Xbox 360 has had and continues to have strong support from EA.
"Nothing short of a tectonic transformation in perception of Xbox 360 relative to its competitors," will change things, he added.
It is fair to say Microsoft hasn't enjoyed the success it dreamt of in Japan, which Ehrenberg picks up on, but its persistence with JRPGS like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey could show strong will power. Not to mention the success of Gears of War across the region.
We can't help but think Mr. Ehrenberg would fit right in to our very own comments threads. And if he did, what would you like to ask him?

Ubisoft's FPS Haze disappeared off the radar after being officially announced last May, but a year on and it's back - sort of - as the publisher launches a viral marketing-style website for Mantel Global Industries.
Mantel Global Industries is the multinational corporation that's produced an army in which Haze main protagonist Jake Carpenter has enlisted.
As a soldier for the Mantel army, Carpenter has access to high-tech vehicles, kick-ass weapons and performance-enhancing bio-medical support via the company's patented n-Keto-thyrazine substance.
A consumer version of this substance has been produced and labelled Nectar Energy Drink - whether this ties into Haze's storyline and ends up turning the world's population in the raving homicidal maniacs, we'll just have to wait and see.
Haze is being developed for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 by TimeSplitters chaps Free Radical and is set in the near-future. Events kick off when Carpenter is sent as part of army to quell rebel uprising in a South American country, but everything's not quite as it seems...
We've not had a chance to have a thorough dig around the Mantel Global Industries website just yet but there's bound to be a few secrets to be discovered.

As we reported yesterday, Namco-Bandai's bonkers Japanese roll-'em-up is making its way to Xbox 360 and PS3 and we've got the first screens of Beautiful Katamari Damacy, as it's currently known, right here.
If you haven't been fortunate enough to experience the joys of Katamari, you play as that little green dude with the hammer-like head and you roll around a sticky ball - called a Katamari - to pick up small objects around a giant house.
As more stuff accumulates on your Katamari, it gets bigger and you're able to roll up bigger things, like people and sofas. Eventually, you grow big enough to roll up entire cities, the Eifel Tower, the Great Wall of China and Zeus - from paper clip-sized ball to planet-killer in a few hours.
No, there's not a massive graphical difference - that's not Katamari's style anyway. But the new game promises to use the extra processing power to let you make bigger, meaner Katamaris. We can't wait.
A release date is yet to be announced, but the official Japanese website is up for you to poke around.

Microsoft has designed a new colour barcode which can store extra information and be read using webcams and mobile phone cameras.
The new High Capacity Colour Barcode will not replace the traditional system, titled UPC, but is set to appear alongside black and white codes on DVDs and Xbox 360 games.
Speaking to the BBC, research engineering director Gavin Jancke described HCCB as "more of a 'partner' barcode", adding, "The UPC barcodes will always be there. Ours is more of a niche barcode where you want to put a lot of information in a small space."
The barcode is comprised of up to eight coloured triangles which can hold up to twice the amount of data as UPC codes. This might include information such as email addresses or the URL of a website offering downloadable content. Consumers will be able to use their phones or webcams to scan the barcodes and access the data.
HCCB codes can also be used to combat piracy as they will contain
nanoparticles which can be detected by special handheld readers.
"The capability of these new bar codes to store more data in a smaller space should provide a rich resource for the industry and consumers alike," Jancke said.
"The new code offers several advantages over existing black-and-white bar codes most people are accustomed to seeing on product packages, enabling new consumer experiences, more visual appeal where aesthetics are important and the ability to incorporate advanced security features."
The new barcodes are set to appear on DVDs and Xbox 360 games by the end of the year.

It's expected that the recently revealed demo of the Xbox 360 version of RTS Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars will be released on Xbox Live today.
An admin on the official C&C forums gave the date for the demo in a thread about a new Tiberium Wars game trailer and further downloads hitting Live yesterday.
As yet we've heard nothing from EA on what the demo will contain, but it may end up being the same as the PC demo which featured one tutorial mission, two single-player missions (which included some of the game's live action video sequences), a skirmish map and a live action trailer montage featuring various famous actors who signed up to star in the sequel.
We can but wait and see.

Marvel Entertainment, SEGA Europe mand SEGA of America have expanded their relationship to include the rights to develop and distribute games inspired by Marvel’s Hall-of-Fame franchises -- Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and Thor. Through the exclusive, multi-year global licensing agreement, SEGA will create titles for console, handheld and PC platforms based upon both the classic comic books and planned feature film adaptations of these world-renowned Super Heroes. The deal follows Marvel and SEGA’s announcement to create titles based on Super Hero favorite Iron Man, with both game and film slated to be released in May 2008.
“Video games are an ideal medium to showcase the appeal and excitement of our Super Hero franchises,” said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios. “SEGA is one of the industry’s most innovative game developers and we are thrilled to partner with them to bring Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and Thor to the video gaming arena. These franchises represent three of Marvel’s most popular characters and lend themselves to captivating game play. We have already seen SEGA’s passion for the Marvel Universe through the early development of the Iron Man video game, and we look forward to working closely with them over the next few years to maximize the potential of these franchises in the interactive entertainment space.”
Under the expanded agreement, SEGA will develop a title to be based on Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated The Incredible Hulk feature film. Hitting theaters June 13, 2008, the film will return the larger-than-life green goliath to the roots of the long-running comic series with an all-new action-packed storyline directed by Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2, Unleashed). The Incredible Hulk video game will be released in the same timeframe as the film. Games based on Captain America and Thor will follow, though the timing of those feature film projects, currently in development, has not yet been determined.
“We are excited to broaden our partnership with Marvel, a recognized leader and innovator in the entertainment industry,” said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America. “As SEGA continues to create games that are built from the ground up to appeal to Western audiences it makes perfect sense to work with a powerhouse like Marvel. Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and Thor are icons that people are already familiar with and love, so our goal is to give gamers the ability to play out their fantasies by actually becoming these Super Heroes. Fans can now not only watch them in movies and read about them in comic books, but also literally control their actions through the video games we are creating. We look forward to bringing these icons to life like never before and putting the power in the hands of the fans.”

It seems like the game industry just isn't as solid as it once was. Games are discovered long before they are officially announced and street dates are broken left and right. Case in point: if the photo above is indeed genuine, it looks like Target has broken the street date on the Xbox 360 Elite. Not only has the street date been broken, but it has been broken by more than a week. Way to go, Target! The picture even includes a receipt, which we have magnified so that the $479.99 price is clearly visible. Granted, it could be a display box and some Photoshop trickery, but it looks awfully legit to us.
What's more, it appears that the owner of the Elite is selling it on eBay. The listing even has images of the serial number. The opening bid is $600. Of course, if Target is routinely breaking the street date, you could pick one up for a lot less.
Anyone else out there manage to snag an Elite from Target (or elsewhere)? We're assuming you aren't planning on winning one.
The eBay auction can be seen here. Leave feedback via comments.

Start humming those catchy songs, because Namco Bandai has finally confirmed Beautiful Katamari Damacy for Xbox 360 and PS3.
The rolly-action-collect-'em-ups are only half-complete at the moment, but we now know they will definitely include some form of online gameplay, as well as make use of a dual analogue control system.
The background singing will also make a triumphant return, though the performers will be new to the series.
The news erupted from the pages of Japanese magazine Famitsu (translated by IGN), which spoke openly with game director Jun Morikawi.
According to him, Beautiful Katamari Damacy will be bigger and better than ever before, featuring bigger maps and lots more junk to collect. Screenshots from the feature showed one katamari spanning 7,000km, eagerly trying to obtain its enormous 10,000km target.
Morikawi also hinted that we may see the game on other platforms, musing over the idea of using a keyboard or stylus to control the action.
Katamari Damacy is a PS2 phenomena that was originally only available in Japan. The aim of the game is to guide a ball around a map, while rolling over different objects to increase your size - much like a snowball rolling down a snowy hill. The bigger you get, the more impressive the things you can accrue, eventually sucking up buildings and trees.

You don't have to look far to see that the Zune rumor mill has been workin' overtime of late, and while the only conclusive pieces we're seen thus far involve various shades of red, Digital NARM could potentially shed some much-needed light on a bevy of questions. According to the docket, Christina Calio is set to speak about "hot new stuff" in regard to Microsoft's Zune for half an hour on May 1st. Interestingly, ClicZune has it that her speech title previously boasted about "exciting updates on developments in Microsoft's new innovative device," but unless our weary eyes have seriously deceived us, that little diddy has since vanished. Still, any latent updates shouldn't come as a surprise considering the position the player is in, but it looks like we're stuck waiting a few more days to find out what Christina's schpeel will reveal.

If you've been toning your Pac-Man skills recently (and you've had 20-odd years to practice) you might raise an eyebrow at Namco's newly-announced Pac-Man World Championship, which is offering the XBLA Pac-Man champ some truly scrumptious prizes.
First place wins you a trip to New York to meet Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani, 26 years of Quiznos toasted sandwiches (that'd be our lunch sorted until retirement), 100,000 Microsoft points and a special Pac-Man Xbox 360. Better than three games and a t-shirt, we're sure you'll agree.
The contest will run between April 25 and May 9 on Xbox Live Arcade, and two leaderboard toppers from both North America and Europe, as well as one from Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Japan and Mexico, will be shipped off to New York for the final.
Uber ghost-muchers will also be joined by a random nutter from the North America-only Pac-Man FANatic competition, which asks the public to send in videos to prove their devotion to the fat yellow chap.
"The success of Pac-Man stems from its fun gameplay and host of characters that have been enjoyed by families for generations," said Toru Iwatani, creator of Pac-Man. "It will be exciting to see Pac-Man fans from around the world compete on Xbox Live Arcade to become the first-ever Pac-Man World Champion."

The delayed Player's Pack Red Edition content update for Rainbow Six: Vegas on Xbox 360 is now available to download from Live for 800 Microsoft Points (£6.80).
Coughing up for the Player's Pack gets you three brand new multiplayer maps, two 'relit' multiplayer maps and two new multiplayer game modes.
New mode number one, Assassination, tasks an attacking team with eliminating a VIP, while the opposing team must defend and escort the VIP to an extraction zone.
Total Conquest, meanwhile is the second new mode and throws up a control-point scenario where two teams battle to activate and maintain control of Mobile Radar Installations. A team wins if it activates and maintains control of one of three installations in a map for a certain period of time.
Both new game modes are playable in Vegas's original 10 maps and the new maps featuring in the download content.
