Valve Software says cross-platform support is in place for Xbox 360-PC play for Team Fortress 2, after revealing it was technically feasible back in March.
"Technically it's done", the developer's Doug Lombardi told IGN of Xbox 360-PC play; Valve's Robin Walker then followed up to reassure that controller issues won't be, well, issues, explaining that staffers who worked on the Half-Life series on Xbox are working on TF2 on Xbox 360.
"...we did the Xbox port of Half-Life internally, and we did that because we wanted to have the expertise from doing that. Like controller expertise and all the sorts of decisions you've got to make that are different on consoles we wanted to have that in-house because we knew we'd be doing more Xbox titles and more console titles", Walker said.
"And so the same guys that did that are working on TF2, we have all the tweaks we did to the controls, the sticks and everything. One of the advantages of TF2, relative to something like Counter-Strike, is that it's not so much about aim."
However, despite Valve incorporating cross-platform play between PC and Xbox 360, it's reported that it's not 100 percent definite that such will actually be included in the final release, due at the end of the year.
As for Team Fortress 2 on PS3, chances of cross-platform play are slim.
"The PS3 version is being done by EA over in the UK, and they don't have all the networking stuff in yet to do anything other than [pause] it's rending and running the games and whatnot, but they're still dropping in the network layers. They're going to be using a piece of code that EA uses for its PS3 multiplayer stuff", Lombardi explained.
"Chances are the PS3 version will only play other PS3s. There's zero chance of them talking to 360s."

Bizarre Creations has sneaked Boom Boom Rocket out the door. The rhythm-action game can be picked up for 800 points.
We reported last week that the game was set for release over the coming weeks, but we didn't expect it to be this soon.
We're downloading it right now, check back for our review soon.
If you can't wait, you can always download the demo for free.

According to rumours this morning the first batch of downloadable songs for Guitar Hero II on 360 will include eight tunes to bang your head to.
There's currently no word on how many Microsoft Points the package will set you back. Or if indeed these will be the first eight tunes you'll be able to download, as nothing has been officially confirmed (or denied).
Motorhead - Ace Of Spades
Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at The Moon
The Exies - Hey You
Edgar Winter Group - Frankenstein
Queen - Killer Queen
The Donnas - Take It Off
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Higher Ground
Bad Religion - Infected
Incubus - Stellar
No sign of the Halo theme tune though. And that makes us sad.

Following yesterday's news that there's a killer glitch doing the rounds for Oblivion: Shivering Isles on PC, Bethesda says it's yet to replicate the same problem on Xbox 360.
Quite how a bug that kills your game gets through the testing department remains a mystery, but you can bet someone's head will be on the slab soon.
Yesterday we reported that the bug occurs once Shivering Isles is installed and was linked to a problem with identification numbers, or Form IDs, for in-game objects.
Bethesda's Pete Hines told GamePro, "We have verified there is a problem that can happen on the PC and we are still looking into whether it is possible on 360, since we don't have any reported cases on that platform so far and haven't been able to replicate it ourselves on that platform. We're testing a fix for it right now and hope to have it out as soon as possible. When we have more info, we'll let folks know."
It's worth pointing out that Bethesda doesn't recommend you download the unofficial patch that someone has made available. Instead they say you should wait for the official fix.

The ESRB website is often the source of new game release information and it has now revealed plans to release Quake III: Team Arena for Xbox 360. The PC FPS was released back in December 2000 as an expansion to Quake III: Arena, offering new team-focused multiplayer modes and weapons.
With no official confirmation from Activision it is currently thought that the game will be released on Xbox Live Arcade. This won't be the first time Quake III has made it to consoles though, with Quake III: Arena making it to Dreamcast in 2000 and Quake III Revolution appearing on PlayStation 2 in 2001. Remarkably, the Dreamcast game allowed console and PC players to go head-to-head.
According to the ESRB listing, Quake III: Team Arena for Xbox 360 is in development at Pi Studios, which has previously worked on the Call of Duty series.

The May issue of Game Informer has revealed several new GTA IV details after playing the Xbox 360 version.
The magazine's ten-page preview is apparently now in the hands of subscribers, and the information has already exploded onto the web.
You can see naughty scans of the article here, but be quick though, we're sure the internet police will get them removed quickly.
Here is the information revealed so far:
Lead character's name is Niko Bellic, and he's believed to be Croatian or Serbian.
Multiplayer is be announced at some point in the future.
Players can use a mobile to call your contacts.
Sorry, but there are no planes as the game takes place in one city only.
You'll have more choice than in previous games, though you will still be taking orders from people.
The story is said to unfold in many different ways giving you more choice and control over the outcome.
The structure of the storyline is said to be "quite different" to previous games.
We'll let you know if anything else slips out.

Fielding CVG's quick-fire questions in an interview published today, Microsoft development group boss Chris Satchell talked-up the Xbox 360's 2007 line-up, telling us that the company isn't relying on "just Halo 3".
"What we're riding on is the whole portfolio," he said. "We've got the biggest games coming out throughout the year and I think people are going to look at the whole portfolio and say that's the reason to go and buy the console, not just Halo 3.
"You've seen the games like Mass Effect - which is just phenomenal, Halo 3, GRAW 2 because I love GRAW." He continues: "You've got Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Forza Motorsport 2 - and those are all first-party, if you look at third-party stuff as well there's just amazing games coming out like the next instalment of Splinter Cell."
MS got its '07 campaign off to a kicking start with Lost Planet and Realtime World's Crackdown, and Guitar Hero II landing last week. Moving further through the calendar Forza Motorsport 2 is pencilled for May, cross-platform blaster Shadowrun in June and BioWare's sexy RPG Mass Effect somewhere there after.

Bungie has finally confirmed, after months of speculation, what that damned X button does in Halo 3 - and apparently you'll be using it in the multiplayer beta next month as well.
The secret function of the little blue button is for deploying equipment and you see three different kinds in action in the latest video documentary.
While the developer doesn't specify exactly which pieces of equipment are exposed in the video, we're guessing that the new bubble shield, trip mine and mobile gravity lift are all assigned to the fancy new X button functionality.

Those mates of ours at Bungie have released the latest Halo3 'ViDoc', which goes into detail on what you'll be playing in the multiplayer beta next month.
The three beta maps Valhalla, High Ground and Snowbound are shown off as well as the first look at actual in-game action. We can tell you now that although these are the same three maps we played last September, they're looking a lot better.
Finally confirmed in the video is the much-talked Shield Grenade (now dubbed the Bubble grenade) from the CGI television commercial, along with trip mines that you can use to take out vehicles.
The Bubble grenade looks like a great addition to the deathmatch formula. Just drop the grenade when someone's chasing you and you'll be shielded from enemy fire and grenades. It's unclear at the moment whether or not you'll be able to shoot out of the bubble. Visually the effect of the bubble looks amazing, it almost appears soft and bouncy, just like a, err, bubble would be, we guess.
The other new addition shown in the video is the trip mine. Drop this baby as you're about to be run over with a Warthog and BOOM!, the Warthog, its passengers and you are blown to pieces.
The multiplayer beta goes live on May 16. So what are you waiting for, young scamp? Get those copies of Crackdown ready.

Extremely obsessed and knowledgeable Madden fans know that the game has never given out a perfect 100 in any skill for any player, until now. Madden 08 will give Chicago Bears' crazy fast return man Devin Hester a perfect 100 ranking for speed. Hester's perfect 100 beats out previous high ranking players like Deion Sanders, Randy Moss, and Charles Woodson who all received 99s at their peak. So, is anyone pumped about Madden 08 or are you expecting just more of the same?

Ah, nothing like the smell of fresh codecs in the morning. Hidden inside the list of new features to be bundled with the spring dashboard update is a handful of new video codecs that will be supported by the Xbox 360. The new codecs are H.264 and MPEG-4 Part 2. What does all this mean? Honesly, we have no idea. Lucky for us, our similarly bewildered kin at Joystiq found an answer. According to the video wiz kids at Red Kawa, "This puts Microsoft at the head of the pack in the Apple TV vs PS3 vs Xbox 360 video battle royale." The 360 will be able to display 1080p H.264 Level 4.1 and H.264 High Profile. This bests Apple TV which is maxed at 720p H.264 Level 3.1 and H.264 Main Profile. As for the PS3, it supports 1080p H.264 but only at H.264 Main Profile. Take that ... probably!
One important note, this does not mean that the Xbox 360 will finally support DivX or Xvid. All your torrenting fantasies will have to wait. Still, this will add some more decent HD video capability to the Xbox 360, and that's always a good thing.

Bugbear Entertainment's Xbox 360 mash-'em-up FlatOut Ultimate Carnage looks set to deliver some of the most insane car destruction action ever witnessed in a videogame as the developer seriously ups the crash ante. Just check out the new screenshots. Ouch.
Adding to the carnage, for FlatOut on Xbox 360 Bugbear has stuck an additional four cars on the track, meaning previous incarnation FlatOut 2's eight vehicles has been bumped up to 12 for more competition and - yes - more destruction. And this is accompanied by five new single-player modes and two new multiplayer game types.

Microsoft and Bungie have announced that the Halo 3 multiplayer beta test will go live on May 16 and run until June 6.
The beta is available to Xbox 360 consumers who have secured a place in the test via the Rule of Three promotion or by buying a copy of the recently released Crackdown, where specially marked copies of the game feature a key to access gameplay for the highly-anticipated first-person shooter.
"Bringing an early look at the multiplayer elements of Halo 3 to our passionate fan base is tremendously exciting for us," offered Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Games Studios.
The beta test will give consumers access to three new multiplayer maps, along with new vehicles and weaponry, ahead of the games release later this year.
Microsoft also released a new behind-the-scenes video on Xbox Live Marketplace today, revealing how the Halo 3 mutliplayer maps are being designed and implemented within the game.

Let's say you're one of those who ended up with a bum 360 Guitar Hero II controller. Sure, you could return it like Red Octane suggested, but what's rock 'n' roll about letting the man care for you? Nothing, that's what. Luckily for those who rock on their own schedule, All About the Games has posted a purported fix that requires little more than opening your axe and loosening two uptight screws.
The site does state that the fix won't void your warranty, though we'll offer a reminder that you shouldn't operate on the guitar while it's plugged in. But come on, you rebels, isn't that exactly the sort of thing the man would want you to worry about? Are you going to wait for the man to pat your head and give you a lollipop or are you going to pull a Brian May and tear the fireplace out of the wall and get rocking?

With the upgrade of the Xbox 360 hard drive comes an upgrade to the retail marketplace card as well. Not content having a 1600-point-per-card cap, Microsoft has created a card worth 4000 points now available online at Circuit City.
The card will retail for $49.99 -- since 4000 MS points converts to US $50, that's like savings of a whole penny! (And additional fees of sales tax and / or shipping, where applicable.) We're still of the opinion that the most convenient and cost-effective conversion of dollars-to-MS points is a funds purchase via Xbox Live Marketplace itself, we understand the need for these cards as gifts or for youngsters given a (in this case, rather steep) allowance to satiate their online needs.
