Microsoft games boss Peter Moore has indicated that the company would seriously consider running a research project similar to Sony's Folding@home initiative, on the Xbox 360, GamesIndustry.biz reports.
The Folding@home project allows multiple, connected PlayStation 3's to calculate data to aid medical research for Stanford University.
Sony's assistance has been widely praised for bringing attention to such schemes, where idle home consoles are able to simulate the processing power of multiple PCs.
"If we truly believe that we can in some way marshal the resources of a much larger installed base of Xbox 360 owners, with a processor that's of equal power to the PS3, then you have my commitment that we'll look at that," commented Moore, corporate VP of interactive entertainment at Microsoft, to The Mercury News.
"And if we believe we can add value to solving a gnarly problem such as medical problems and the health problems that Folding@home seems to be doing, then we'll certainly look at that very strongly."
So far, over 250,000 registered PlayStation 3 users have signed for the Folding@home project, although Moore is still wary of the actual results
"I'm not quite sure yet whether we're seeing real tangible results from the PlayStation 3 Folding@home initiative. We continue to look at this and see whether there's real value," he added.

They've been doing the rounds in Middle-earth (or magazine land) for a while now but finally the first Project Gotham Racing 4 images have made their way on to the internet, and consequently into the fancy CVG screenshot viewer.
As you can see from the screenshots the big feature in PGR4 is the gorgeous weather effects, with water that beads realistically on the paintjobs, sprays from the tires and causes madness in the in-car view.
Also promised for the fourth installment are over 200 racetracks from ten different locations and a broader set of vehicles, ranging from the vintage'63 Corvette Sting Ray all the way to the slick Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.
According to magazine reports we might have to wait until next year before PGR4 races in to the shops, but in the meantime you can always make do with Forza 2 which lands on Xbox 360 next month.

Fire up your Xbox 360s because The Spring dashboard update has finally gone live - and the menus are now running smoother than Bishop's bonce.
As well as the much-touted Live Messenger integration, updates and changes to the dashboard include:
A richer Achievement notification pop-up will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.
Enhanced family settings features for Xbox Live communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.
A new Xbox Live Marketplace blade lets Xbox Live members access the content they seek-whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States)-from one place on Xbox Live.
Updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow owners to quickly see which games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.

Alongside today's release of XBLA Double Dragon, Microsoft has detailed the six new download titles heading to Xbox 360 "later this year".
To save our fingers the pain, here's the list (not in chronological order of release) via the magic of cut and paste:
Mad Tracks: This 3D racing party game from Load Inc. and D3Publisher recalls all the fun of playing with toy cars from childhood. Up to four players can race micro cars in a variety of gameplay modes in familiar settings such as a living room, a restaurant and a toy store.
Rush'n Attack: Also known as "Green Beret," from Konami, this is a faithful next-generation update of this classic coin-op arcade title where the player assumes the role of a special forces agent sent behind enemy lines to infiltrate an enemy military complex and free captured prisoners of war. Gav assures us this was awesome back in the day.
Soltrio Solitaire: From Silver Creek Entertainment, this is a collection of 18 different solitaire games, offering co-op and competitive two-player solitaire game modes.
Spyglass Board Games: From Strange Flavour Ltd. and Freeverse, this offers classic versions of the world's most beloved board games, including chess, checkers, mancala and reversi, as well as the ability to enjoy video chat with friends via the Xbox Live Vision camera.
Street Trace: NYC: This is a hover board racing and arena battle game from Gaia Industries Inc. set against the urban wasteland of future New York City. Make your mark on the leaderboards in intense eight-player action over Xbox Live, or battle at home through split-screen or single-player tournaments.
Undertow: This is a fast-paced action shooter from Chair Entertainment Group that thrusts players underwater as they battle for control of the oceans, and features a robust single player/co-op campaign and up to 16-player multiplayer action.
So in summary, Mad Tracks looks brilliant, Soltrio Solitaire isn't Solitaire at all and we're still wondering what happened to Sonic the Hedgehog XBLA.
Looking forward we're also tapping our feet for the arrival of Every Extend Extra Extreme (read our impressions), Alien Hominid spiritual successor Castle Crashers, the Arcade port of Ikaruga and the excellent Arcade version of Tack 'n' Field.
Tell us what you're waiting for in the comments section below. Or else.

RPG developer extraordinaire BioWare has declined to commit to a release date for its 360 sci-fi epic Mass Effect, despite CVG's exclusive report last month that the game is heading for a September release.
The word form BioWare comes from the company's latest IGN blog update, in which it attempts to answer a handful of the community's biting questions. "What's the release date?" One post asked. "Well, we're still at a stage where we can't commit, but stay tuned for future updates!"
CVG learned last month that the game has been penciled in for a September release, months after the long-speculated June/July dates.
However despite what our sources tell us Microsoft is expectedly keeping quiet on the matter. "We have not made any official announcement regarding release timing for Mass Effect. At this time, any information about the game's release date is purely rumor and speculation," a company spokesperson said.

Double Dragon is now available to download from Xbox Live Marketplace and it'll knock you back 400 Microsoft points, which is around £3.40 in UK money.
The best thing about the remake has to be the feature that allows you to play online with a friend over Xbox Live. The game also features enhanced art, a new soundtrack and 12 Achievements to hunt down with a rusty iron pipe.
You can even choose to play the game with its original graphics, which is something that's bound to please the retro freaks among us.

Those hankering for a bit of GRAW this morning can look forward to an explosion of classic multiplayer maps arriving on Xbox Live Marketplace today.
The maps, which work in every multiplayer mode, are pulled from Ghost Recon 2, Summit Strike and the original Advanced Warfighter, having been given a complete visual makeover for GRAW 2 - though we're sure series veterans will have no trouble recognising them.
The maps included in the Throwback Pack are:
- Bonfires
- Desert Gulch
- Fishing Village
- Jungle Mines
- Mountain Base
- Mountain Falls
- Peninsula
We haven't spotted in on Marketplace and there are no pricing details just yet but we'll let you know when we hear word from Ubisoft.

In what could truly be considered a statistical improbability for Xbox Live, we've made it through more than our fair share of rounds in Catan without any player-related issues. Everyone we've met who makes it through a full game gets a good approval rating and nobody (and we actually mean nobody) has deserved a complaint or negative review. No pre-pubescent screams, no racist/sexist/homophobic statements ... sure, there's expletive dropping -- but it's all in proper context. Is civility actually possible on Xbox Live?
People will instantly argue that Catan brings a different crowd to Xbox Live and given our experience that is absolutely true. And we love it! Catan, combined with Uno (although there are caveats with Uno), shows that there is a different demographic out there in Xbox Live land. Now does this stop the calls for an adults only section for Xbox Live? Not a chance. It would still be nice to play Halo without the ... let's just call it "noise." All we know is if this Catan community is the same that'll be into Carcassonne, then that's money well spent for a nice couple hours of gaming.

1up is reporting that Bungie has admitted to not having the time to do cinematics right for the best-selling Halo 2. Along with statements they made earlier this year about flaws in Halo 2's multiplayer, the folks at Bungie seem quite willing to own up to previous mistakes. Their call to arms this time: everything will be better. "With Halo 3, they have artists and designers who've worked on epic Hollywood projects like The Lord of the Rings and King Kong, not to mention a former Industrial Lights & Magic guy (read: Star Wars) working out the details on an 'amazing space battle ... there's a bigger team, a team that has had the final cinematic script for much longer, and now has access to vastly more tools, resources and technology than ever before. These range from new tools for rigging facial animation, to better lighting and camera controls. Most of the improvements are a solid blend of technology and manpower this time around, and we hope the fruits of that labor end up as succulent as they look now.'"

press release:
Harmonix, developer of the blockbuster Guitar Hero™ franchise, MTV: Music Television, a division of MTV Networks, a unit of Viacom (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), and Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) will have their instruments exclusively featured in the upcoming videogame Rock Band™, an all-new platform for music fans and gamers to experience and connect with music. In addition, Roland Corporation and BOSS have agreed to have their brands featured within Rock Band.
To deliver the ultimate interactive music experience in Rock Band, Harmonix and MTV have secured an agreement with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, the world’s most respected manufacturer of electric guitars and amplifiers, that will allow the Rock Band game controller peripheral to be modeled after the legendary Fender Stratocaster, one of the most enduring and iconic models of electric guitar in the world. In addition, Fender guitars, basses and amps will be exclusively featured in the game.
“Fender is pleased to be part of Rock Band and the exciting opportunity it offers passionate music fans and gamers,” said Bill Mendello, CEO of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. “Our friends at Harmonix have done an amazing job of capturing the power and style of legendary Fender products within the virtual gaming experience and delivering it all in the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll.”
To further raise the level of Rock Band’s authenticity, Roland Corporation, the world’s leading innovator in electronic instruments, and BOSS, recognized for its line of guitar effects pedals, have agreed to have their brands featured in Rock Band in-game and via co-marketing.
"Part of Roland's mission is to bring people closer to the music they love. Rock Band certainly fulfills that goal by bringing a deeply interactive music experience to the world, and having Roland featured in the game is a great honor," stated Dennis Houlihan, President and CEO of Roland Corporation U.S.
“Like the Fender Stratocaster, BOSS effects pedals have a long distinguished history,” states BOSS U.S. President Paul Youngblood. “We’ve worked with Fender on many projects in the past and we’re honored to be sharing this experience with them. Having the Strat® in Rock Band is going to take the virtual world by storm and when it does, we’ll be proud to have the BOSS name and pedals right there with it.”
“The Stratocaster has been the weapon of choice for many of the world’s legendary guitarists. Giving players the opportunity to rock out using a guitar peripheral modeled after the Strat really adds to the authenticity of the experience,” said Alex Rigopulos, president and co-founder of Harmonix. “Many of the staff here at Harmonix play Fender and Roland instruments and use BOSS effects pedals in their own bands, so we are thrilled to be able to work with these companies.”
Rock Band will allow players to play solo or recruit bandmates and jam side-by-side or virtually online, playing music from the greatest rock artists of all time. Built on unprecedented deals with the world’s biggest record labels and music publishers, the music featured in Rock Band will span all genres of rock and include many master recordings.
The title is slated for release on PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® in holiday 2007. For more information on Rock Band and Harmonix Music Systems please visit www.rockbandgame.com and www.harmonixmusic.com.

Blade Interactive - that of Snooker sim fame - has finally revealed it's impressive water-powered action game Hydrophobia, which is heading to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
It's being headed up by crack-coders including that of ex-Splinter Cell and Fable 2 descent, and revolves around the story of a super-ship that's been hijacked by naught nanobot-using terrorists.
The water technology is the real touting point of the game though; bubbling, splashing and lifting anything that isn't nailed to the floor.
But don't take our word for it, read Xbox World 360's world exclusive preview - with screenshots - right here.

Microsoft's always-loud internet spokesman Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb has gone on the defence regarding the recent pay-for Gears of War download.
Speaking on the Major Nelson podcast, MS co-host 'e' said: "Free's great, I know what people are saying. I do find this amusing though; a lot of people may not remember this but a year ago Epic was bragging about how they cost us one billion dollars."
In case you're none the wiser, the podcast comments are in reference to Epic's persuasion of Microsoft to include 512MB of RAM in the Xbox 360 hardware, which ended up costing MS an extra billion bucks-a-roos (we promise not to use that word again).
"I just find it amusing that on the one hand Epic are saying 'haha, we cost you a billion dollars!' and on the other hand they're saying 'well these should be free!'", the co-host said. "It's much easier when you're spending other peoples money."
The Gears Hidden Fronts map pack is on Xbox Live Marketplace, with four new multiplayer maps, now for 800 Microsoft points (£6.80).

Microsoft's has said that the spring Xbox Live update should be with us something this week, featuring Windows Live Messenger.

They are using Xbox 360 to play games, music, and movies while simultaneously communicating with one another through video, voice, and text chat. Whenever there's an announcment about getting more file types to play back on the Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii, a lot of you always seem to want to remind everyone else that you're already running XBMC on your original Xboxes. Okay, we get it. It's great. Whopee! But if you are using XBMC, this $35 DIY kit can add IR-controlled On/Off to your beloved console.
With this installed, you can turn your Xbox on directly from your couch using the remote—or probably any universal remote—without having to run up and hit the power key. We wish our PS2 had this, since those three seconds of exercise are too much for our atrophied little hearts to bear.

Some WIP news from the Final Burn for Xbox coders:
The next version of FBA XXX Pro will be released within two weeks. This version brings new games/drivers closer to version 2.96.71. It also includes beta & neo-geo games, not in the PC version. There have been a significant amount of new games added, and testing each driver is a task within itself!
On a side note; +T+ has asked that I take over the lead & coordination for the FBA-XXX Pro project.
+T+ and I started down a parallel path several years ago when the source code for FBA-XXX was released. We both envisioned a version that was not for the casual, mainstream xbox gamer, but a version, which used the latest versions of games for the hard-core, emulator fan. My FBA-Xtreme, and his FBA-XXX Pro.
Thoughout the past few years, we have coordinated efforts, shared ideas (especially, when one of us was stuck with a code problem) or new features (like the kiosk mode for arcade cabinets.) +T+ was much a hard-core coder as he is a gamer...which drove quick releases and updates on a regular basis. clapping.gif
I would like to publically thank +T+ for our "virtual" friendship, ideas and passion for moving the xbox emulator community in a positive direction.
Please send him your best wishes for future endeavors; he has offered to jump in to help from time to time, so he is not leaving!...just taking a break.
So, I am starting this new thread for the reasons above, and if you are interested in new features, find bugs, issues, etc. to post them here or send me an email with the new release.
I will announce on the forums when it is posted on xbins...I'm trying to get it released by May 12 (before I head out on vacation for 2+ weeks biggrin.gif )
Happy Gaming!

New Update coming for 360 users
news via fngspot
Apparently the 'long awaited' dashboard update will be released on Monday, May 7th.
Here's a list of new features:
Marketplace now has its own "blade"... (I'll be avoiding this one until the DRM issue is resolved.)
Compare scores & achievements with friends just like the Xbox.com website
Updates to the Live Arcade now allow you to see what games your friends are playing, and the option to join them if possible.
Added video bookmarking so you can pick up where you left off in a movie!
Rewind, fast foward, pause and resume videos as they're downloading. (No more waiting until they're fully downloaded to watch them.)
Switch between Letterbox “Widescreen” & Full Screen viewing on the fly.
Video has been divided into chapters. You’ll now be able to skip between chapters at any time.
Family settings update for Video Chat and Voice Chat. (Now there's 2 different family settings; one for each.)
An “auto download” feature has been added for all trial versions of Xbox Live Arcade titles.
Low power mode allows you to automatically shut down the console when your content is finished downloading.
Disc tray icon on the dashbaord will now display the game title that's currently in your Xbox 360... no more guessing, ejecting, or having to boot the game to figure out what you left inside your Xbox 360. (I'm hoping it does the same for HD DVD's left in the HD DVD player.)
Xbox Live Instant Messenger features added for text chat.
More detailed friends list.
Hopefully they'll add an 'allow this console to play full versions of the Xbox Live Arcade games I purchased without connecting to live' feature too.
Double Dragon is coming to Xbox Live Arcade next week too. It will be available on Wednesday, the 9th.... I've got my fingers crossed that Microsoft will address the migration and DRM issues by then... yeah, right!
