Following the re-emergence of rumours suggesting Microsoft may support Blu-ray in the future, the company has confirmed it has "absolutely no plans" to support any other optical formats.
Rumours began back in January when Peter Moore suggested in an interview that Microsoft would be willing to adapt to consumers needs. The same rumours appear to have been refuelled recently on a number of websites, some of which have been citing an alleged Associated Press story which does not appear to exist.
"We're fully committed to HD-DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats," confirmed Microsoft on its Gamerscore marketing blog.
"We firmly stand behind the HD-DVD format as the best choice for consumers. Current reports indicating that Microsoft has a back-up plan which includes Blu-ray support are incorrect," detailed the company.

Microsoft has released a new update for the Halo 3 beta after players experienced difficulties with downloading, announcing an extension of the beta deadline.
Beta keys given away with copies of Xbox 360 title Crackdown initially failed to work for some users, but the new patch, which may take up to four hours to download, solves the problem.
Bungie has confirmed that players may see a text-display issue with the in-game user interface, where words have disappeared. To fix this, players need to reboot the console, then press the D-pad and hold the A-button until the Bungie logo appears. A dialogue box will then appear to confirm the maintenance fix.
Halo 3 is due out in the US on September 25, with the European release to follow a day later.

Snes emu for Xbox updated:
-Added option to use the Path.ini or to have ZsnexBox create all the directories on the E partition. This will allow users to easily put ZsnexBox on a CD/DVD and run it on any Xbox (without having to create all the directories Path.ini points to). Just change "usePathINI=1" to "usePathINI=0" in the Path.ini before you burn the CD/DVD.
-Screenshots larger than 512x512 are no longer supported. If ZsnexBox finds a preview larger than this, it will not display it. Extremely high res box art will cause a crash (i.e ZsnexBox runs out of RAM), and 512x512 is plenty big enough. HD users at 1080i might want to go even lower (256x256). If ZsnexBox freezes after 2 or 3 games, you are running out of RAM and ensuring previews are no bigger than 256x256 will likely fix the issue.
-Tweaked all the skins to make them easier to read.
Install:
Extract and copy over to your Xbox hard drive. Run "default.xbe" to start.
-Thanks

When the topic of sluggish PlayStation 3 sales is brought up, Peter Moore recalls his previous corporate life and asks, "Remember the Dreamcast?" Speaking to Next-Generation's Colin Campbell, the Microsoft exec compares Sony's current difficulties with those he experienced with Sega on its final console. "We thought we were doing right," he says. "All of a sudden it didn't pan out."
Though we're not privy to the same lucid and possibly prophetic dreams Mr. Moore is, lumping Sony's latest effort into the same category as the Dreamcast brings with it many sticky implications, intended or not. Is Moore saying the PlayStation 3 is failing to "pan out" for Sony, less than a year into its supposed ten-year life? Sega came out of the gate strongly and promptly drove off a financial cliff like Thelma and Louise, whereas Sony is off to a slow start and has every chance of picking up the pace. Moore goes on to say that Sony's focus on the Cell processor and the Blu-ray drive was a mistake, that it "miscalculated the global consumer's appetite for the experience the offered at the price point they offered it at." But wasn't the PS2's "Emotion Engine" and DVD drive instrumental in its triumph over Moore's ex-box?
We remember when the Xbox 360 was given the Dreamcast treatment as a means to highlight impending failure, and it was as odd then as it is now. Despite the system's commercial demise under the watch of a struggling manufacturer, it enjoyed amazing first-party support and is still remembered for hosting some remarkable games and innovations. When did being compared to the Dreamcast become such a bad thing?

After months of anticipation and hype, the Halo 3 multiplayer beta was scheduled to go live today at 1pm. Two hours later though and there's still no sign of it for people trying to get in through the Crackdown invite.
Bungie has updated its website (that's a bit broken too as thousands try to access the forums to find out where the demo is) with following: "Folks are reporting problems downloading the Halo 3 Beta via Crackdown this morning. We have alerted the appropriate Live authorities and they are taking care of the problem as we speak. More news as it comes in."
We've just popped a copy of Crackdown in our 360 and the option to download the Halo 3 Beta is still greyed out, telling us to check back at a later date. Thanks for that.
"With any luck this will be a short delay. People entering the Beta through other methods - Friends and Family, Rule of Three and so on, are unaffected," adds Bungie. The population count has been increasing since lunchtime.
Word is sources close to Bungie have now said that there could be a problem the the server that's hosting the beta for Crackdown invites. Other sites are suggesting a 24 hour delay. Same time tomorrow? 1pm? We'll let you know.

Look at those kerrr-azy stunts! New screenshots from THQ's PS3 and Xbox 360 game Stuntman: Ignition have leapt across pits of fire to reach us in time to be published this afternoon. No pixels were apparently harmed during the endeavour.
Stuntman: Ignition finds you strapping on death-defying boots as a Hollywood stuntman and attempting to master the most crazy vehicle stunts ever filmed. You're the new stunt-boy in town and it's time to put your big cahones on the line and combine reckless manoeuvring with perfect execution to unlock big-budget blockbusters and lucrative commercial deals.
The game features six films to perform in, 25 vehicles to master and 36 different stunts, and you can even go online and challenge other players to a stunt-off. Plus, there's a stunt constructor that lets you create your own crazy stunt runs and open them up to other players over the 'net.

The Halo 3 multiplayer beta has already undergone one update, Bungie this morning making some small changes that bring with them both good and bad news.
The good news is that the appearance of Team Slayer games in Team Skirmish mode has been significantly decreased. "This means more High Ground CTF for Beta gamers," explains Bungie.
Unfortunately, the update, which you must install to continue playing, will invalidate your current saved films and empty your file share. Admittedly, this will only effect those lucky enough to have got on the beta test ahead of the public launch, which goes live at 1pm today.
The purpose of the update was "to ensure that we are able to make subtle or dramatic changes to the game on the fly, in order to react to problems we could encounter going forward.
"Don't worry, we will try to keep these updates to a minimum throughout the course of the Beta," promises Bungie, "and naturally we don't plan to wreck your films everytime a change is made to the game."
Bungie this morning confirmed that the full and complete Halo 3 will launch on September 26. Excite!

If you've got a really good memory like ours you'll remember Sega promising an Xbox Live Arcade version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog way back at E3 2006. Over a year later and we're finally starting to see the fruit of Sega's XBLA labour.
Alongside Sonic, the latest batch of listings on the ESRB website have also revealed another Sega classic heading for Xbox 360 - Ecco the Dolphin, the old Mega Drive swim-sim that had our younger selves swimming through hoops and bashing whales in the face with our rock-hard dolphin.
Recent rumours of a 'Sega Vintage Collection' for XBLA seem to be rubbish then, but we wouldn't be surprised if more Mega Drive vintage crops up on Microsoft's box sometime soon.

Undiscovered British bands invited to submit tunes to accompany Microsoft game trailers.
Unsigned bands, bedroom DJs and singers are to be given the chance to make their dreams of stardom a reality, as Microsoft Xbox announces a national campaign to find Britain’s hottest new undiscovered music talent at www.xbox.com/music.
From today, Xbox is looking for up and coming artists to create their own music to fit the visuals of Xbox 360 game trailers. Entrants to the ‘Soundtracks’ competition will be able to download a range of trailers from xbox.com/music to produce music to. Aspiring musicians then simply have to upload their track and video back to the site where anyone can view and rate their efforts. The winner will then win time in a state-of-the-art recording studio, to lay down their track for real with the help of a professional production team, and walk away with a professional demo tape.
The competition was launched by hot new band Enter Shikari, who have created an exclusive track for Blue Dragon.

Microsoft Game Studios' Shane Kim has attacked the ambitious PlayStation Home service, stating that he doubts Sony can create a top-notch virtual world, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.
He went on to claim that Sony's PlayStation Network wasn't in the same league as Xbox Live.
"I doubt [Sony's] ability to implement it and execute it in a really rich and compelling way," Kim told Shack News.
"PlayStation Network is not Xbox Live, it's not even close. To think about layering [Home] on top of that - wow. The hardest part is not even creating the system, it regulating the behaviour and all of that too. That's a massive investment in infrastructure."
Kim also said that Microsoft has no plans to produce a similar virtual world for Live, as it would require too much work for gamers that don't necessarily want it.
"I don't think we need anything like that. I've spent some time with the Linden Lab guys [developer of Second Life]. To try to build Second Life on Xbox Live - or YouTube, Facebook, any of those big social networking services - it's a lot of work," Kim added.
"I actually believe that most gamers will always find more value in what we have on Xbox Live and now Games for Windows Live and how we're building that out. That's what I think is a much better approach, and that's what our approach is going to be."

Ubisoft has revealed details of Naruto: Rise of a Ninja, an Xbox 360 adventure based on the exploits of the popular anime and manga character. The game is being developed exclusively for 360 at Ubsioft's prolific Montreal studio, and is due for release in the autumn.
Although the hyperactive adolescent ninja has appeared in games before, they've mostly been fighters or simple action games. Rise of a Ninja promises an extensive single-player adventure feauring "action adventure gameplay, classic platforming battles, head-to-head fighting and in-depth character development".
The game promises to follow the plot of the anime series closely, from the very beginning up to the 80th episode. Players will experience growing up as Naruto in an around Konoha village, and follow his development from disruptive dropout to respected ninja.
You'll be free to roam around the village and its surroundings, interact with regular Naruto cast members like Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi, and develop your fighting techniques as you see fit. There will also be a multiplayer mode, allowing players to pit their favourite characters from the saga against each other.

Microsoft has released an update for the Xbox 360 HD DVD player on Xbox Live.
It will be automatically applied to your hardware the next time you watch a film in sparkly high-definition while being signed into Live.
The biggest improvements are in the audio department, which now boasts more output choices when using TOSLINK or HDMI connections. You can choose from Digital Stereo (2 channel PCM), Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, and WMA Pro. You'll also find a new "Dynamic Range Control" option to fiddle around with.
Networking support has been updated, as has title compatibility, and you should find that performance with MPEG-4 AVC and H.264 files has been tweaked.
Those of you about to buy an Xbox 360 Elite in America will also be pleased that 1080p is now supported via HDMI, while concerned mums and dads can now flex upgraded parental powers (well, controls).
Don't worry if you don't have access to Live to download the update, as it will be available later in the week from Xbox.com.
So, um, how many of you bought the HD DVD add-on?

Demos for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Viva Piñata can now be digi-pinched from Xbox Live.
Those of you eager to relive the adventures of Jack Sparrow, or simply get in Elizabeth Swann's togs, can enjoy a tutorial level from Disney Interactive's upcoming romp. It's based around the events of the second and third films, and is actually supposed to be pretty good - which makes a change from the last two games.
The full banana is due out on 22nd May. And note that this demo isn't available in Asia, Canada, Mexico or the US.
Or, for you green-fingered people that looked the other way when Rare returned to form with last year's Viva Piñata, there's a bite-sized taster to see what you missed.
It really isn't just a child's game, despite the amount of times we've wound Tom up with those words, and it even turned out to be one of our favourite games of 2006. Go and absorb our review if you don't believe me.
This demo's available almost everywhere in the world, and it seems even those without Gold memberships can download it, despite Major Nelson saying otherwise. So get stuck in.

Yes, it's coming from non-gaming news source Reuters. No, you shouldn't expect to base "reviews" off previews. However, it is an international wire service that'll influence the Halo 3 message in the "average" consumer's mind, so here we are.
Reuters reports that players had mixed reviews about the beta at the NYC and San Francisco Halo events from last weekend. Poor Nicholas Puleo of EvilAvatar is thrown by Reuters into the cross hairs of Halo fanboys everywhere by saying, "The graphics can use some work ... They're not much different than the previous Halo ... They've got five, six months until release, so they'll add some polish ... When I compare it to other things in the platform, it's not standout." Wait fanboys, don't hunt him down just yet.
Despite that one quote and the headline, the Reuters piece is actually just a bunch of quotes from Microsoft marketing folks. Of course, the great "duh" quote goes to Craig Davison, Microsoft's director of marketing, "There's a significant number of people just waiting for that one game and this is the game." It'll certainly be an interesting month for NPD data the month after Halo 3 launches to see if there is a spike in Xbox 360 sales -- and how significant it'll be.

Last month, Germany's interactive entertainment game rating board passed judgment on an unannounced game called Prince of Persia Classic for the Xbox 360. The game is unannounced no longer, because Ubisoft today confirmed that it will indeed find its way to Xbox Live Arcade early this summer.
As one might expect, the game is a remake of Jordan Mechner's 1989 computer game, albeit with a layer of next-gen polish. The level design, swordfighting, and time limit of the original will remain the same, while character designs, animation, and other graphical overhauls provide a twist on the familiar. There will also be some new puzzles, traps, and enemies added to the mix.
Perhaps more surprising than the game's announcement is its developer, mobile gaming specialist Gameloft, publisher of Paris Hilton's Diamond Quest (nee Jewel Jam). While the company is new to the Xbox 360, it has handled the Prince of Persia style of gameplay before, specifically in 2003's Prince of Persia Harem Adventures for mobile phones.
Prince of Persia Classic has been rated T for Teen. According to Ubisoft, the game has not yet been priced.

Mac users using Nullriver's Connect360 software to stream content to their Xbox 360 got an unpleasant surprise after installing the most recent Dashboard update, which beefed-up their 360's capabilities but unceremoniously severed the link with their Macs. As is often the case with such things, however, the software's developers have been quick to respond, not only fixing the problem but throwing in a few updates for good measure. Most notably, Connnect360 now boasts support for H.264 and MPEG4 video streaming, and you'll also now be able to stream podcasts straight from iTunes. While the update is free for exisiting users, the software itself is not (setting you back $20) -- although until Microsoft decides adds some Mac support itself, it looks to be about your only option.
