Microsoft has begun promoting Halo 3 with a viral marketing campaign that promises to reveal more about the game's universe and backstory.
Speaking to our sister site, Eurogamer.net, a spokesperson said that the campaign is titled 'Iris' and will run for several weeks.
"'Iris' is a spiral campaign designed to take gamers on an incredible journey through the Halo universe," he stated.
"Led by an 'unknown' hand, users will discover bits of previously unknown information about the Halos, the Flood, the Forerunners, and the true origins behind the Halo trilogy."
Bungie content specialist Frank O'Connor has written most of the material, with help from community manager Brian Jarrard and artist Aaron LeMay.
The campaign kicked off this weekend when groups from an organisation called The Society of the Ancients took to the streets of cities such as New York and London to hand out flyers with the message, "We are not alone."
The logo on their flyers and t-shirts matched the one used by a mysterious poster on the Halo forums. It also appeared on a cryptic email sent out by Microsoft.
A Society of the Ancients website has been set up, complete with countdown clock.
Microsoft also used a viral campaign, ilovebees, to promote the second Halo game, and launched a similar initiative - origen - in the run-up to the debut of Xbox 360.
Halo 3 will launch on September 26.

Microsoft is paying an unprecedented $50 million for exclusive rights to publish two episodes of the forthcoming game, Grand Theft Auto IV, on its Xbox 360 games console, according to statements from a senior executive at GTA IV publisher, Take-Two Interactive.
Take-Two has already recorded the payments in financial filings as deferred revenue, explained Lainie Goldstein, Take-Two's newly appointed CFO, in a conference call with analysts.
First Xbox episode in March 2008
Microsoft is paying $25 million each for two separate downloadable packages that are expected to expand the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV with new play areas and features exclusive to Xbox 360 owners. The first will be released in March 2008, Goldstein said. Details of pricing have not been announced.
“The first 25 [million] is for the first episodic content package that's supposed to go out and that is in March of 08”, Goldstein said. “The second 25 [million] will be for the second episodic... the episode. That will be later in [the] fiscal year, fiscal 08”
While Goldstein did not specifically refer to GTA IV, Take-Two's most recent financial filings provide a list of forthcoming publications. The only episodic content listed is for GTA IV.
Remarkable scale of exclusive deal
The unprecedented scale of the $50m deal is indicated by the fact that it exceeds Take-Two's average quarterly revenue of $43 million received from all its Xbox 360 titles combined.
Take-Two subsidiary Rockstar, which is developing the game, plans to release GTA IV in on October 16, 2007. The initial release is expected simultaneously for both Sony's PS3 console and the Xbox 360.
Transcript of Take-Two comments
Goldstein made her comments on downloadable content in response to a question from Evan Wilson, a senior research analyst with Pacific Crest Securities' software team, during Take-Two Interactive's Second Quarter Fiscal 2007 Results Conference Call (link to streaming audio, requires free registration). The remarks come toward the end of the conference, at about the 40 minute mark. Here is our transcript of that section.
Evan Wilson, analyst: "And as it relates to the deferred revenue chunk associated with the... episodic content on Xbox 360, [I] can see that [unintelligible, assumed to be 25] million of that moved into short term deferred. Can you give us any sense of when that's going to hit the P and L [profit and loss statement], and will we see 25 million at one time and then the second 25 million or will [there] be a slow bleed onto the P and L?"
Lainie Goldstein, Take-Two CFO: "The first 25 is for the first episodic content... package that's supposed to go out and that is in March of 08; and that's why its moved into current, because its in the next 12 months. And the second 25 will be for the second episodic, [unintelligible] the episode, and that will be later in [the] fiscal year, fiscal 08."

New from Divineo China
At long last it’s time for Xbox 360™ owners to feel the benefits of tilt sensation, something of which PS3™ owners have been privileged to since its inception. Moreover, the Nintendo Wii™ is a prime example of just how instrumental interactive controllers can be in providing a highly enjoyable gaming experience. Talismoon is delighted to the release the second generation of its Tiltboard controller, featuring a high quality design which is guaranteed to be even more user friendly than the PS3’s SIXAXIS™ controller.
Talismoon’s Tiltboard sports a unique u-shaped board that puts the two Tiltboard control buttons within easy reach of gamers fingers, with one button conveniently located on either wide of the wireless controller battery pack. This gives gamers the ability to make on the fly tilt adjustments during a game without even stopping. This comes in particularly handy for instances in games when it is necessary to switch between both stick and tilt control.
The Tiltboard is an intelligent piece of kit and comes pre-loaded with TiltTune ™ technology which is the most user friendly firmware available for such a device. Gamers have the option to adjust the tilt sensitivity, adjust the 0 degree in order to hold the controller at the most comfortable angle, invert the Y axis and turn the tilt function on and off. Everything required to enjoy the latest sensation in console gaming on Xbox 360™ comes in a convenient package and requires only seven wires to solder.

Score one for Xbox owners, who'll soon be able to roll up big balls of stuff to quirky Japanese tunes. It appears the upcoming Beautiful Katamari is now destined to be an Xbox 360 exclusive. The information comes from "a little birdie with good reason to know," according the Level Up, Newsweek's gaming blog. This marks a dramatic change for the series, considering all previous games have been exclusively on Sony systems. Apparently Namco is showing a pattern of trying to build closer ties with Microsoft. I guess the Xbox is on a roll (sorry, couldn't resist).

And no, that's not just from seven crisp-guzzling geeks in Kentucky with too much time on their hands. Microsoft actually signed up 820,000 Xbox 360 owners for its Halo 3 multiplayer beta test, which means an average of 14.6 hours per participant.
More numbers: in total the beta generated 350 terabytes worth of downloads from Microsoft's server. And particularly popular was the feature allowing players to record their games and send the footage to friends – 580,000 saved films were created by beta testers.

Even though Microsoft seems to be dragging its feet when it comes to addressing the EU's anti-trust concerns, the software-giant-cum-console-maker was quick to respond to European Commissioner for Consumer Affairs Meglena Kuneva's inquiry regarding accusations of faulty 360 hardware. Specifically, the commissioner wanted to know the scope of the disc scratching problem brought to light by Dutch program Kassa -- and unsurprisingly, Redmond seemed to allude to 1UP that it was toeing the same party line in Europe as we heard back in April. The bottom line here is that Team Xbox is clearly adamant that there is no widespread problem, and while they seem to be a little more reticent to blame the end user now, your only recourse remains contacting the company and crossing your fingers.

New from Play Asia
Trusty Bell takes place in a dream world which centers around the piano composer Frederic Chopin, who died at the age of 39 due to tuberculosis. The plot centers around the concept that three hours prior to his death, Chopin dreamed of a fairy-tale land, in which people with incurable diseases have great magical powers.
In the dream world, Chopin meets a young girl named Polka, who lives in the Village of Tenuto. Polka also has a terminal disease, and her boyfriend Allegretto is searching for ways to convert her magical power into a cure.
Eternal Sonata features a battle system centered around musical elements and character-unique special attacks. Light and darkness play a part in the appearance and abilities of enemies on the battlefield, as well as the types of magic that can be cast.
The game does not only feature a selection of Chopin's compositions played by the pianist Stanislav Bunin, but also features additional in-game music composed by Motoi Sakuraba.

Xboxygen got their hands on 4 more screenshots of Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4. Unfortunately, none of the shots are 360° flybys of a given scene, but it'll do. Still, the game seems to be coming along graphically and these screens have some great examples of the engine's explosion, lighting, rain and realistic smoke capabilities. Are you digging the art direction, as well as the move to modern day combat scenarios in this next installment of the Call of Duty series?

The technophiles at Xbox-Scene have uncovered a tasty bit of Xbox 360 news that should serve as some relief to sufferers of the Red Ring of Death. It looks like Microsoft is employing new heat-combating measures when refurbishing broken units. Specifically, a new heatsink is being installed. The heatsink resides directly under the DVD drive, connected to one of the other heatsinks with copper tubing. Blessedly untouched by the Red Ring of Death thus far, we don't know how effective this new heatsink is, but we're hopeful that it will solve perpetually publicized 360 failures. Whether or not Microsoft is also installing the heatsink in new Xbox 360s is unknown.

Previously, we've gushed about the game's visuals and fell head over heals for the trailer. And now we have a release month for when we can expect more. Atari just announced that Alone in the Dark 5 will release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC sometime this November (with its buddy Assassin's Creed). If you aren't familiar, Alone in the Dark is set in present day New York where you head off to investigate paranormal activities relating to the afterlife in a very Resident Evil kind of way. Typical horror game? Possibly, but did we mention the graphics this game offers? Yeah, we're in graphical love and will definitely be checking out Alone in the Dark 5 this November. Will you?

Red Storm, the team responsible for multiplayer in GRAW 1 and 2, has revealed it's working on a new America's Army game exclusively for Xbox 360.
It's called True Soldiers and is expected in the U.S. this September, although publisher Ubisoft was unavailable to confirm a European date.
Team-play is the big focus of the title, as you might expect from an officially licensed Army simulation game, and online battles will be won and lost based on tactics and communication, rather than rocket jumps and chainsaw attacks.
You'll be able to play as one of five classes: Rifleman, Grenadier, Auto-Rifleman, Sniper, and Team Leader. These all progress in roughly the same way, by earning experience points for completing training events, objectives or entire missions. Once you rack them up, you can spend them in one of four main skills, each branching out into a further two sub-skills. For instance, Snipers will want points in Marksmanship, as well as Focus and Observation sub-skills, and possibly some Stealth.
Squad Leaders will make the plays, so to speak. They can order in artillery strikes and coordinate attacks using interactive maps and reconnaissance data. Team Leaders report to them and order their Fire Teams around based on those instructions.
Alongside standard team Deathmatch on Xbox Live there will be eight cooperative missions for up to 16 people to take part in. There's also a new mode called Competitive Training that puts you up against up to 15 others on one of three different target ranges. You'll then have to blow the stuffing out of anything that pops up, like targets or vehicles. You can choose to have a time limit or a score limit, it's up to you - it's also a great place for clans to hone their abilities.
Red Storm also has a grand plan to reward honest, helpful players, and to increase active socialisation online. It's based around a system that rewards you with "Honor" points when you play, well, honourably. And these will dictate your rank and standing on the all important leaderboards.
You can earn points through respect tokens, too, which are are dished out at the end of games. And it's up to you which helpful or nice player you want to reward with your share. Recruiting people into your clan, or Army Unit, will also net you respect. So in summary, the more you sew, the more you reap; help and be rewarded for it.
It all sounds like it's making for an engrossing and realistic Army Simulation experience. But whether we'll actually see a release here after the previous version was mysteriously canned is yet to be seen.

Atari have announced the demo availability for Overlord the new “it’s fun to be evil” game for PC and from Xbox Live Market Place for the Xbox 360.
Using a premise ripped straight from Dungeon Keeper (circa 1997 - Bullfrog), Overlord tasks players with building up and evil empire full of upgradeable minions to do ones bidding. In this case the ‘bidding’ is to rule an empire with and gauntleted fist.
Don the Overlord’s illustrious armour, assemble a team of fighter minions and head off for a session of serious destruction in the once tranquil area of The Mellow Hills. Descend upon the unsuspecting populace and wildlife, use your loyal minions to gather life-force from the somewhat unwilling sheep, grow the size of your minion horde, and let the Halflings-gone-bad know there’s a new boss in town.
Make use of minion upgrades, including pumpkins as minion helmets, throw in some peasant intimidation and a show-down with the Guard Troll and you’ll have a taste of the havoc that a minion horde can wreak.
The PC demo is available from www.atari.com.au and www.codemasters.com/overlord and will feature an ‘adopt a minion’ desktop buddy to call your own.
A similar demo is available for the Xbox 360 from the Xbox Live Market Place with Atari promising; “In the full game, players will be able to amass armies of up to 50 minions and select from three further minion types to lead into battle. Then there’s the rest of the twisted domains to explore (and conquer), seven corrupt heroes to defeat, the Dark Tower to rebuild, and the Legion of Terror and other spells to unleash as you strive to be proclaimed the mighty Overlord!”
Start practicing that evil laugh now – find a fluffy cat to stroke in your lap and work on a beady-eyed look. Overlord will be available from June 29th in Australia

What's that you say? You'd like to play Halo 2 on your PC, but you don't have/want Windows Vista? You're in luck then, as Falling Leaf Systems has announced plans to release software that will allow Windows XP users to play Halo 2. Not only that, the company is developing similar software for Shadowrun. To inspire XP users to take the plunge, Falling Leaf is promising a free copy of the compatibility software to those who order either game through their site. Falling Leaf CEO Brian Thomason concludes the press release with some fighting words: "First they claim that it was impossible to implement DirectX 10 compatibility atop Windows XP, and now they also want us to believe that they couldn't successfully launch two DirectX 9 based titles on XP either. We plan to expose both theories as patently false."
Assuming this software works as advertised, would you change your mind about picking up either title?

Nes6502 has released a new version of his port of ZSNES, the Snes emulator for the XBOX.
What's new/fixed?
* Fixed crashes related to running out of RAM in HD modes. You should be able to use any skin in 720p or 1080i and have no crashes ever. If you are an HD user that has been waiting to upgrade, then now is the time.
* Several (too many to list) HD GUI fixes. If you are an HD user, you will be pleased at the new tweaks.
* Added 720p and 1080i versions of all the skins. If you are going to run in 720p or 1080i, don't try to configure everything yourself (it takes FAR too long). Change to a 720p or 1080i skin and this will setup the GUI for you. This method will only require minor tweaks for your TV.
* The HD setting is now applied from the skin ini file.
* Removed a lot of dead code.
* Removed the TV calibration option since I assume it's not really being used by anyone. This frees up more RAM.
* The database files are loaded/unloaded on the fly to free more RAM
* Fixed the virtual keyboard to display correctly in 720p and 1080i.
* Added larger font sizes for the game guide and GUI (the game guide was too small to read in 720p and 1080i. This is fixed)
* Loading game guides 1MB and up should work now in HD resolutions (but don't go too crazy with the file sizes).
