The fact that you all voted the Zune "Worst Gadget of the Year" in the recent Engadget Awards doesn't seem to be causing any hand-wringing in Redmond, as Microsoft confirmed today that they're building a dedicated Zune factory in China with an unnamed parter to crank out the oft-rumored next-gen Zune. It looks like Toshiba's not going to be involved this time around, as Zune marketing director Jason Reindorp has been quoted as saying that the rush to get the original Zune to market "forced us to take a look around at what was on the shelf...and get it out there," while this time they're interested in "the flexibility and control we have in creating a device from scratch." Ouch. Sorry, Tosh. Reindorp mentioned that the new manufacturing partner is someone MS is "very familiar with," and the new plant is located in the same city as the Flextronics plant that builds the Xbox 360 for Bill and Co., although nothing's been confirmed. For what it's worth, Reindorp also said that building a dedicated plant isn't going to bring "changes for the sake of changes" to the Zune (which is pretty funny given how many promo Zunes keep popping up) but here's hoping that it brings changes for the sake of actually making the thing better.

Gaming peripheral company Mad Catz has signed a licensing agreement to create merchandise based on Halo 3, the company announced this morning.
The multi-year deal with Microsoft will see Mad Catz pump out a range of Halo 3 faceplates with characters brandished on the front, with further merchandise expected after that.
According to Next-gen.biz, Mad Catz says it expects the faceplates to arrive prior to Halo 3's launch later this year - because of course it'd be mental not to have them on the shelves alongside Bungie's legendary sequel.
Mad Catz CEO Darren Richardson said in a statement, "The addition of this marquee license to our portfolio is further evidence of the ongoing success in our initiative to align ourselves with the most appealing brands and popular software launches..."
The multiplayer beta is due to go live this Wednesday.

Microsoft has named Soltrio Solitaire as the title shuffling onto Xbox Live Arcade this week, and at 800 Microsoft points (£6.80) we reckon we'll stick with the plain old Windows version (which is free).
But if you absolutely must hand over your cash you'll be rewarded with a deck customisation system and a main game that has you travelling around a map, beating down opponents with your card-matching skills.
Slightly more exciting is the co-operative mode which has two players working together by passing cards between each other reaching for that ever-enticing high score.
Soltrio Solitaire will be available for purchase on XBLA this Wednesday morning. Hold us back.

Bungie and Microsoft has given out codes to select members of the press to get a first-hand look at the open beta of Halo 3 before it goes live on May 16. CVG has been hammering the game since last night and we can now proudly present our first-hand impressions.
Weighing in at just over 900MB, it took us around half-an-hour to get up and running late last. By now everyone should have seen the leaked YouTube movies and had a quick look at the maps, weapons and game modes of the open beta. What you'll see in the beta is nothing revolutionary and your first impressions will be that you've been here before.
It's essentially the same formula as Halo 2 online only with a few new spices to liven things up. But did we really expect it to be a totally different game? No, in fact it was just good to be playing new Halo again. Halo 2 has been pretty much exhausted since it came out and even releasing remade maps from Halo 1 will do little to give the game a fresh feel.
Snowblind, Valhalla and High Ground all serve as a good indicator that Halo 3's multiplayer is going to be just as much fun as previous instalments of the franchise. All three maps are small and open allowing you to spend most of your time engaging in combat rather than wandering through corridors and mountain passes trying to find someone to shoot. These have clearly been selected for the immediate fun factor.
You can play team or solo games and Bungie's new matchmaking options are being put to the test. Finding a game is no problem and the beta hasn't even gone public yet. But once you've joined a game and then finished, you can stick around the lobby and 'party-up' with other players just by hanging around. The game will then take whoever's left off to find more players for a new game. This saves the need to quit out and fire out friends requests, accept them, and join their games if there's someone you've got on well with on the battlefield.
There's a massive community feel to Halo 3 and you'll get to try out the much-talked about Saved Film function. Once you game's finished you can hit a button to save a replay of it and watch it later. The idea being that you can analyse you or your team's performance and improve it.
Clans are going to love this and you can swap and share clips via Xbox Live. There's limited function in the open beta of Saved Films but it's enough to give you a idea of the potential for fans sharing their greatest moments long after the glory has gone. Remember all those homemade videos of players blasting Warthogs around maps in Halo 1? Bungie has now basically given the community a set of tools to do it properly. It's just another sign that user generated content is beginning to take over the world.
Visually the game is looking good, nothing draw-dropping like in a Gears Of War kind of OMG, but that's more down to the art direction of Halo than developer skills or tools. There are some nice little touches in there though and they're so subtle you may or may not even notice them. For example Snowbound features soft surfaces and if you look closely, you'll be able to see character models sinking into the snow as they move on the map's surface.
The matchmaking process decides the game mode you're about to play and the playlist's favourites so far seem to be standard deathmatch, rockets and Shotty Snipers. Main team modes feature Team Slayer, Territories and CTF. Whether you're a fan of solo or team games, there's plenty to chew on in the beta.
Performance-wise we haven't run into any problems yet. Maybe that'll change when it goes live to the masses but everything seems to be running as planned, which isn't bad considering the size of the demo and that fact hat it hasn't been optimised yet.
The Halo 3 beta won't surprise you but it does serve as a reminder of how strong the console shooter is online. As we said before, it's just good to be playing new Halo and we'll be playing as much as possible for the three weeks it's live.
Expect more impressions and reports as the weeks unfold. If you're lucky enough to have got a place on the closed beta, let us know your initial thoughts below.

With early press access to the Halo 3 multiplayer beta in full swing (we received our code last night and have been fraggin' away like the merry bejesus and top fun it is too), the first official movie from the game has hit the net courtesy of one of Bungie's own testers, the admirable Mr Jukes.
Taken from both internal alpha and beta phases, there's some top quality Halo 3 stuff to see in this Betalicious movie and none of it any of that shaky cam malarkey you'll find on YouTube either.
Nope this is the official real deal and top quality it is to behold too, so being the nice chaps that we are we thought we'd share. We won't spoil too much for you as a picture tells a thousand words etc. but definitely check out Lazr Cat's sequence at the end, Mawr Spartan Lazr rockz!

The much-anticipated Halo 3 multiplayer beta is up and running as Microsoft gives select members of the press early access to the multiplayer beta.
It's not scheduled to go live until Wednesday, May 16 but there are well over 1000 Microsoft and Bungie employees sharpening their skills on the game as well as select members of the press RIGHT NOW.
CVG got its code a few hours ago at a special hands-on event in central London this evening and we've been flying the flag and hammering all three maps and various game modes ever since.
You can play solo or team-based game types in ranked and un-ranked modes. Game modes appearing in Slayer so far include Shotty Snipers and Rockets aside form standard deathmatch modes.

Today's hottest video goes out for all you Halo 3 fans -- at least 5 million, by our counts. Microsoft employee Mr. Jukes, reportedly the most fanatical player in the company, has created a video of his playtime with the internal beta. Bungie has released the video for the world to see.
They also remind the fanbase that this beta is a bit older than what will soon be released for mass enjoyment testing. "This was fully sanctioned and approved by Bungie," the developer added, "unlike some of those other 'leaked' videos that have ended up online."

Sequel to popular Grand Theft Auto-style free-range crime game to debut on both Sony's and Microsoft's consoles next year; PS3 port of original canceled.
Saints Row for the PlayStation 3 is no more. During a conference call with analysts after THQ's earnings report today, CFO Edward Zinser revealed the port, which was originally slated for release during this quarter, has been canceled. He said that as a result the California-based publisher is revising its guidance for the April-June quarter, the first of its fiscal year, downward.
THQ CEO Brian Farrell explained the logic behind the cancellation thusly to analysts: "We think the most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous ship into a larger installed base next year," he said. "We think the bigger opportunity is a multiplatform launch."
As one might deduce from Farrell's comments, THQ has reallocated all Saints Row resources at its internal studio, Volition, to work on a sequel. The game, which currently has no official title, will ship simultaneously on the PS3 and 360 sometime next year. Further details on the second Saints Row were scant, with THQ saying only that the game would "utilize Volition's proprietary open-world engine and deliver an all-new cross-platform gaming experience." Farrell did tell analysts the game had been in the works for "some time."
Released last August as a 360 exclusive, Saints Row was praised by critics as being the first free-roaming urban crime game to be worthy of comparison to Grand Theft Auto. It also benefited from the fact no GTA game was released for next-gen consoles in 2006, selling nearly 700,000 copies in the US alone, according to industry research group NPD Funworld. The game has topped over 1 million copies worldwide, and recently achieved Platinum Hits status. Perhaps not so-coincidentally, there are no console versions of Grand Theft Auto planned for 2008.

Source: A variety of reports linking back to the console partisans at Xbox Evolved.
What we heard: Even skeptics of Halo 2's sales potential on the PC--which is limited only to Vista-enabled machines--can't contest the fact the game is a monster hit on the Xbox. As of March 31, it has sold nearly 5.7 million copies in the US alone, according to the NPD Group. The industry research firm pegs combined retail sales of Halo 2, the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack, the Halo Triple Pack, and both versions of the original Halo: Combat Evolved at a grand total of 11.6 million. And, again, those are just the US retail figures: On its first day on the market in 2004, the game shipped 2.38 million copies worldwide, generating over $125 million in 24 hours.
Needless to say, the level of interest in Halo 3 is somewhere in the stratosphere. Between 60,000 and 80,000 inquiries about the game are made on GameSpot each day, and the mere mention of its title sends story comments into the hundreds. So when reports began to surface today that at least four million people have pre-ordered Halo 3, they seemed perfectly reasonable.
However, at second glance, the news of Halo 3's preorder milestone seems much shakier. They stem from a single report on Xbox Evolved citing "information at five different Greater Cincinnati Gamestop locations." The console fan site claims the four million figure was "verified at all locations" even though "a document showing this information was not revealed." Also, the report claims four million people preordered the game via GameStop alone. That figure seems awfully high, given the fact that GameStop only accounts for around one quarter of US game sales, and there were only 10.4 million Xbox 360s worldwide as of January.
The official story: Calls to six different San Francisco GameStop and EB locations produced an almost uniform answer. "We don't have access to that kind of information," one manager said incredulously. "And even if we did, we wouldn't give it out without the OK from corporate." For its part, GameStop's corporate office had not responded to inquires from GameSpot as of press time.
Furthermore Microsoft--who presumably would want to tell everything with an opposable thumb about four million Halo 3 preorders--refused to even address the report. "No comment," was all a recalcitrant rep would say.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that four million Halo 3 GameStop preorders have been officially confirmed in any capacity. Not bogus that at least four million gamers worldwide will scoop up the Master Chief's adventure in its first few months on the market.

In case you're interested in yet another unsubstantiated image (e.g. ZOMG PHOTOSHOPPED / faaaake / etc.) of future Zune firmware builds, here's a couple more shots. Apparently WiFi syncing still isn't in the cards, but the source that sent these along notes that WiFi encryption will work, as will subscription, but you can't send it to another player until you sync back to your PC. Sounds kind of annoying -- so we're not ruling it out.
