It looks like that "big" Microsoft news from the Pac-Man championship tournament finally hit today.
Namco game designer Toru Iwatani created a new edition of Pac Man for the Xbox 360, due to hit Live tomorrow for 800 points. Pac-Man Championship Edition will feature the first new mazes for the game in 26 years.
Championship Edition will feature six modes:
The Championship Mode. This is the main game mode designed by NAMCO BANDAI Games and Iwatani specifically for the championship round of the Xbox 360 Pac-Man World Championship. This mode - as well as all others within the "Pac-Man Championship Edition" - features redesigned mazes with wide maze walls and a widescreen configuration to better enable high-speed game play. Timed limit of five minutes.
Challenge Mode 1 (Patience and Reward Course). This mode is an evolution of the Championship Mode. Patience mazes strategically offer fewer Power Pellets and Reward mazes provide a large number of Power Pellets - providing unique challenges and rewards for the player. Timed limit of 10 minutes.
Challenge Mode 2 (The Darkness Course). In this mode, only the area directly around Pac-Man and the Ghosts is visible and the maze walls are completely hidden. Timed limit of 10 minutes.
Extra Mode 1 (The Freeway Course). An extremely high-speed mode for advanced players, this mode features warp-speed Pac-Man and Ghosts and plenty of tunnels. Timed limit of five minutes.
Extra Mode 2 (The Manhattan Course). A mode inspired by the streets of Manhattan -- the home for the first-ever Xbox 360 Pac-Man World Championship. Timed limit of five minutes.
Extra Mode 3 (The Overall Course). A mix of all other modes resulting in extreme mazes for the most devout Pac-Man fans. Timed limit of 10 minutes.
Yes, that's really it. Pac Man, but with new mazes. I told you it wasn't that big a deal.

via PS3 Center
It seems that Grand Theft Auto IV may actually miss its October 16, 2007 release date on the PS3 and Xbox 360 due to a delay.
The game is set to launch on October 16, 2007. That has been the release date ever since the next-generation Grand Theft Auto was announced a few months ago for a simultaneous release on the PS3 and Xbox 360. That release date is also just a few weeks before the end of the fiscal year.
Analyst Michael Pachter believes though that Take-Two will delay the game. He stated that "We believe that it is possible that the company will choose to ’throw in the towel’ on financial year 07 by shifting the release date for Grand Theft Auto IV by a few weeks, increasing the losses incurred this year and improving the company’s prospects for financial year 08."
This would not mean too much of a delay for Grand Theft Auto IV but would probably cause it to miss its traditional October release timeframe it has been keeping with GTA 3, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas on the PS2, which all launched in October.

Microsoft’s Bill Gates has given the strongest hint yet that the company plans to introduce a new control system for the Xbox 360 influenced by the success of the Wii, although his somewhat vague comments suggest a very different approach to Nintendo.
As detailed by technology website All Things Digital, Gates was taking part in a live conversation with Apple founder Steve Jobs, when Gates began to discuss the use of 3D online interfaces and the increasing role of the PC as a home media and communications center.
He ended his comments by saying, “And as we get natural input, that will cause a change... Software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you’re just going to pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it.”
As the similarities behind his concept and that of the Wii were pointed out, Gates responded: “No, that’s not it. You can’t pick up your tennis racket. And swing it.”
“You can’t sit there with your friends and do those natural things. That’s a 3D positional device. This is video recognition,” he added.
Although the use of the phrase “game machine” implies Xbox 360 technology, no further details were provided by Gates, although others, including Xbox’s Peter Moore, have previously hinted at Microsoft’s interest in producing a motion sensing controller for the Xbox 360.
Gates himself has been the most dismissive of Microsoft executives on the subject of the Wii, repeatedly stating his skepticism of the format and its controller and regarding it as a novelty. In May 2006, he even went as far as to state that motion sensing controllers are “something that's not mainstream for most games.”

This is old news that the Xbox 360 has been scratching discs and Microsoft has promised to look into the problem, but what is new news is the fact that the European Commissioner for Consumer Affairs is not happy.
Meglena Kuneva (EU Commissioner) has gave Microsoft exactly one week to respond to the problem of the 360 damaging media and to detail how the company has handled the bad DVD drive situation in the Netherlands.
Microsoft will also have to tell the European Commissioner how many complaints have been received.
If things go from bad to worse it may come about that the European Commission force a recall of the Xbox 360’s in the Netherlands.
It is all resting on how Microsoft handles this problem as they could end up in legal hot water.

Retailers both in Europe and the US have bee quietly changing their dates of when they expect to see Virtua Fighter 5, another exclusive Sony lost to Microsoft’s machine. Dates range from September to November of this year, which is a way off yet. Not so, according to SEGA.
Eurogamer had the chance to speak with SEGA, who still expect the game to ship sometime in the Summer. This is contrary to sites such as Gamestop, Play.com and GAME. It’s strange that the majority of retailers have pushed their dates back so far, but since none of them match there is little to read into at the moment.
The 360 version still lies in murky waters in terms of content though. With the PS3 version already released, many would hope that some improvements would be made. Certainly one would be which version the game is based on. In Japanese arcades, they are currently running Version C of VF5, whilst the PS3 version runs on B. It is hoped that the 360 version will use the enhancements made in C instead of running on what is now old technology. Optional analogue control and improved AI are also hoped for, along with Xbox Live multiplayer.
Hopefully SEGA will speak more publicly about the 360 version soon so as we know what we will be getting. For now though, praying will have to do.

It seems that Microsoft can’t catch a break these days what with Vista still failing miserably and apparently so are XBOX 360’s. Now don’t get me wrong, I own a XBOX 360 and I’ve had it for about a year with ZERO issues. There are those XBOX 360 owners that are perfectly happy (like me) and there are others who have gone through five or six units and even then all their issues are not fixed. We’ve talked about that before. And now, the Netherlands and the European Commissioner for Consumer affairs wants answers and wants them now.
I don’t know how widespread the problems mentioned in the US or other markets are but it seems the European market is having a problem with broken hard drives and scratched DVDs. The DVD scratching problem occurred briefly here in the US. Now this may be going out on a limb but could it be that Microsoft has pawned the flawed consoles off on other markets while at the same time fixing some of the issues in the US market?
There are upwards of 1,000 complaints from the Netherlands alone which is going up every day. The commissioner not only wants answers from Microsoft Europe but from other markets as well and a bulleted list of all issues and problems known in those markets.
Unfortunately for the commissioner she cannot order a forced recall on the XBOX 360 and I’m no expert on European laws or the Netherlands for that matter but surely if this is the case, something can be done besides going through broken XBOX 360 after broken XBOX 360.
The Inquirer found a mostly English interview with the commissioner which can be heard right here.

You can't stop the resistance
THE MODDED XBOX 360 console got banned last time that Microsoft updated its console firmware.
As usually happens, this ban did not last for long as hacking groups found a way around this protection and with the latest iXtreme firmware, modded Xboxes are back on-line.
The latest firmware for TS-H943 DVD drive, the iXtreme firmware 1.0 promises to defeat all current and some future Xbox Live detection attempts, and will enable pirated software to be played on the console. The media type can only be Stealth Xtreme Xbox 360 backup or Stealth Xtreme Xbox backup. It, of course, boots all of the original software for both Xbox 360 and the first console.
Hitachi drives are not supported with this release, and there is no announcement about the timeframe when that drive will get patched.

Midway's highly anticipated World War II FPS title, Hour of Victory is now live and playable for the first time via Xbox LIVE® Marketplace with an exciting single-player teaser demo, which provides a glimpse of what's to come when it hits shelves in June 2007.
The Hour of Victory demo will give the player a sneak peak into the rugged North African level. Players will be able to pick any of the three characters in the game, the Covert Operative, specializing in stealth and sabotage; a British Commando specializing in the guns-blazing frontal assault; or an Army Ranger who specializes in sniping and demolitions.
Hour of Victory allows you to play a key role in the pivotal and cinematic battles from the European and North African theaters of World War II, using the skills and gameplay style you choose. Sneak into enemy territory as a covert operative, storm the gates as a British Commando, or snipe from afar as an Army Ranger. Each character's unique attributes will be needed for the fulfillment of the overall objective. Only with all these skills working closely together will you be able to say that you helped define the Hour of Victory.
Built using the powerful Unreal® Engine 3.0, Hour of Victory combines authentic details from historic World War II battles and adds in frenetic and cinematic gameplay. Built in WiFi isn't yet ubiquitous and plenty of gaming and home theater gear needs to get online. $99 adapters? No way. We do it on the cheap.
The internet has, after many years, finally penetrated the living room, primarily on the back of gaming consoles like the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. There's plenty of other stuff in the living room that needs a connection to the net, like high-end A/V receivers that can stream internet radio, HD-DVD and Blu-ray players for firmware updates and forthcoming interactive content, TiVos for sharing recorded content, and Slingboxes for streaming your own TV.
Despite the fact that WiFi is ubiquitous as the home networking solution of choice, almost none of these devices, including the Xbox 360 and low-end PS3, have integrated WiFi. As such, owners must extend Ethernet to their living rooms, or buy hardware-specific WiFi adapters, as in the case of the Xbox 360. Neither solution is terribly convenient, as running Ethernet all over the house is a pain, and dedicated wireless adapters are severely overpriced ($99 for the 360 adapter, common!).
Happily, there exists another option that is superior to all others in terms of cost, convenience, and expandability. WiFi-to-Ethernet bridges have fallen off the map since the early days of home networking, yet are exactly what so many need today. As the name suggests, the tools are essentially WiFi receivers with a built in network switch, the combination of which allows multiple Ethernet equipped devices to connect the adapter and share a WiFi connection to the home network.
A functional WiFi-Enternet bridge can be constructed from an old-school Ethernet router and a WiFi access point, if such spare hardware is lying around out of use. For the most convenient of installs, however, an all in one solution is ideal. The most readily available is Buffalo Technology's AirStation Turbo G High Power Wireless Ethernet Converter (WLI-TX4-G54HP), which Amazon sells for $64.65 at the moment.
Buffalo's product accepts up to four connected devices via Ethernet and connects them to 802.11G networks. In our Gear-test theater we're running one with an Xbox 360 (immediate $35 savings versus the official Microsoft adapter), a Home Theater PC, and a Slingbox AV. Setup is easiest if one is using a Buffalo WiFi-router, but after an initial configuration we had ours connected to our D-Link-router's network without much hassle. After that it was a simple task of connecting Ethernet from our devices to the Buffalo bridge and we were up and running.
In pretty much every aspect the Ethernet Bridge solution is superior to alternatives. It's significantly cheaper than just one Xbox 360 WiFi adapter and allows up to 4 devices to share the connection. Better yet, the Buffalo bridge can accept alternative antennas for situations in which signal strength is weak.

The details for Grand Theft Auto IV continue to trickle out from a variety of sources, and the latest will set your imagination spinning.
Thanks to a recent preview in the Official Xbox Magazine, it appears player will have a new way of transporting...well, any number of things. Many avid followers of the game have seen the Admiral (GTA car model) getting broken into during a preview video, but a bit more of that video was uncovered by the magazine: apparently, when behind the vehicle, an information prompt came up on the top left side of the screen, telling the player to press "LB" (left bumper on the 360 controller). This button will probably be the L1 controller on the PS3's Sixaxis. When you press the button, you pop the trunk.
Yup, the trunk. Perhaps you could store weapons and ammunition in any vehicle you take, or maybe you could even hide bodies! They've been talking about making this particular GTA installment much more realistic, so perhaps authorities could find bodies and then spring into action. Maybe hiding your tracks is more important this time around, and a trunk would be perfect in that capacity.
We'll let you know when we hear more about this feature, and how Rockstar plans to implement it. But isn't your imagination spinning right now? See, we told you.

Ever dreamed about playing your fave Xbox 360 title but while using a Wiimote? Sure, it sounds like a Bizarro World concept, but Wii-FTW forum admin "Sir CRX" appears to have created a mod to achieve this goal.
From Wii-FTW:
Through the use of 1 Nintendo Wii remote and 1 Xbox 360 controller, yours truly has created a way to use any computer accessory (even an additional wiimote) to control your 360. Click here to look at the simple wiring. Only 4 buttons are currently supported but joystick, and all additional buttons will come later(as well as a how to). This is only the first "phase" or "version" of this project.
A YouTube video of the alleged mod in action can be seen . The only problem -- it doesn't have any of the Wiimote functionality outside of the buttons. So there's no motion sensing. Looks like we're going to have to stick with our tried 'n' true wireless 360 controller.

In the past few days rumors have been a flutter over a Swedish gaming magazine confirming that Metal Gear Solid 4 would be making its way to the Xbox 360 in 2008. The source, a supposedly translated piece from the magazine's article posted on the Xbox.com forums. Well, from what we can tell, this rumor is made up crud that some fanboy whipped together to stir the rumor pot. But why do we cry falsity?
Well, on the same forum, member indianhustler brought to everyone's attention the wording of this supposed magazine article by linking to a 2003 IGN article that talks about MGS 2. That 2003 article's verbiage is nearly identical to the supposed new MGS 4 rumor from Swedish Super Play magazine, except for a few words switched out. Take a look for yourself as we've posted both the "translated text" from the new rumor and the old 2003 MGS 2 IGN article below. See any similarities? Yeah, this MGS 4 confirmation is nothing more than a copy and paste job from an old IGN article done by a bored fanboy. That's why this is made up bologna ... for now.
Supposed MGS 4 confirmation from Super Play magazine
"At the end of 2007, one of the biggest titles to be released for any of the current generation consoles is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. As the follow up to the blockbuster smash hit PS2 title Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, it will problably sell extremely well and be played by many PS3 fans. However, sole owners of Wii and Xbox 360 would have to do without it. Fortunately, Konami isn´t completely blind to the fact that more gamers deserve to play this epic title, and it is now confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the Xbox 360 will launch a year later in November 2008. It will come with new content additions including VR missions and other bonus gameplay like Snake Tales, which lets you go on more objective-based missions -- some quite lengthy. So, there's no question that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the Xbox 360 comes packed with more content than the original PS3-version. Seemingly, the Xbox 360 Metal Gear would have been the one to wait for, but Konami respond by releasing the slightly beefed up Metal Gear Solid 4 for PS3 as well." Text from MGS 2 IGN article that ran in 2003
"At the end of 2001, one of the biggest titles to be released for any of the current generation consoles was Metal Gear Solid 2. As the follow up to the blockbuster smash hit PSX title Metal Gear Solid, it went on to sell extremely well and be played by many PS2 fans. However, sole owners of GameCube and Xbox would have to do without it. Fortunately, Konami wasn't completely blind to the fact that more gamers deserved to play the epic title, and it released Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for the Xbox a year later in November 2002. This came with new content additions including VR missions and other bonus gameplay like Snake Tales, which lets you go on more objective-based missions -- some quite lengthy. So, there's no question that Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance comes packed with more content than the original MGS2 on PS2. Seemingly, the Xbox Metal Gear would have been the one to buy, but Konami responded quickly by releasing the slightly beefed up Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for PS2 this March."
