One of the series that helped launch the machinima into the mainstream is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Episodes one through five of Red vs. Blue can be downloaded for 80 Microsoft points ($1) apiece.
There can be no purple!
The first season of Red vs. Blue, the comedy series from Rooster Teeth Productions, uses the Halo franchise as its canvas for a tale of two factions battling out in the canyons of Blood Gulch--one of the multiplayer maps from Halo: Combat Evolved. Each episode runs three to five minutes long and touches on a number of subjects, such as the importance of capturing the flag, the Warthog's resemblance to a puma, and how tanks are good for picking up chicks.
Red vs. Blue was one of the original items available for download on Xbox Live Marketplace and welcomed users to the Xbox 360. Episodes of the spin-off series, Out of Mind, have also been featured on the online service.

April 14th, 2007, 16:04 Posted By: wraggster
Source: The blog of Roger Ehrenberg, president and COO of investment analyst service Monitor110, as picked up by Newsweek, Wired, and others.
What we heard: The Ehrenberg blog post roundly condemns Microsoft for "channel stuffing," a shady process by which company's can meet their stated shipment goals by sending unwanted inventory into the retail channel just before the end of a fiscal period. The company gets to say it met its targets, but it can come back to bite it later as those goods are returned to the manufacturer or retailers reduce future orders until they've worked their way through their existing backlog of merchandise.
Ehrenberg bases his accusation of channel stuffing primarily on postings from another financial blog, the Apple-focused Blackfriars' Marketing. The first post was made last December, and questions Microsoft's ability to hit its publicly stated target of selling 10 million Xbox 360s by the end of 2006.
The Blackfriars writer notes that Microsoft counts systems sent to retail as not just shipped but actually sold. It then crunches some numbers (and apparently confuses worldwide figures with the NPD Group's US-only numbers at one point) and concludes that Microsoft could have hit its goal for the year, but only by stuffing the retail channel. He follows that up by implying that Microsoft threatened to withhold copies of its Vista operating system--released in January--from retailers who didn't play along and choke down excess Xbox 360 inventory.
The second Blackfriars post is from late January, right after Microsoft downgraded its sales projections for the Xbox 360 from 13-15 million systems by the end of June to 12 million. The Blackfriars writer views the downgraded guidance as confirmation that the publisher was indeed channel stuffing at the end of 2006.
"Strong companies confident in their strategy and performance don't do these things," Ehrenberg wrote. "They don't have to. What kind of a message does this type of behavior send to the investor community and, more importantly, your customers? Weakness. Fear. Short-term thinking. Nothing that represents a positive signal for a better, brighter tomorrow."
While Ehrenberg paints a pretty bleak picture, a handful of analysts GameSpot contacted about the story disagreed.
"Microsoft sold-in 10.4 million 360's by December 31," noted Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson. "It seems very unlikely that Microsoft stuffed the channel to beat their 10 million forecast."
Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter was similarly skeptical. "It's possible that Microsoft has shipped a few hundred thousand consoles more than retailers want, but not possible that it shipped millions," Pachter told GameSpot, adding, "Microsoft would never stuff the channel to make numbers look better. I really don't buy this at all."
Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian called it "old news," but not what he would characterize as channel stuffing. "Microsoft's guidance for Xbox shipments during the first half of 2007 disappointed some investors, but the reality is they already had enough units in the channel to fulfill much of the demand," he said.
Nollenberger Capital Partners' Todd Greenwald said Ehrenberg's issue with Microsoft was legitimate, but also old news.
"Sure Microsoft probably over-shipped the channel," Greenwald said," but we knew that three months ago… To me, and most of Wall Street, it was pretty clear what Microsoft had done. And Sony's done the same thing. Nintendo's the only one who isn't doing it, but that's not to say they won't do it again in the future."
Greenwald also pointed out that it's different for a hardware vendor to stuff the channel than a software publisher because systems have a much longer shelf-life and will eventually sell. On the other hand, Greenwald said if software doesn't move in the first month, excess inventory will quickly suffer price cuts and returns.
When contacted by GameSpot, Ehrenberg himself confirmed that his blog was intended to take what was considered old news in the gaming world to a wider investment audience that might not have heard it before.
The official story: Microsoft did not "stuff the channel" with Xbox 360s to meet our sales numbers. Retailers had built a healthy inventory position last quarter to support sales during the holiday, and also for this quarter to accommodate holiday gift card redemptions.--A Microsoft representative.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that this is a big deal. Companies play semantics with "units shipped" and "units sold" all the time, we essentially knew about this months ago, and one man's channel stuffing might be another man's slower-than-expected holiday sales season.

During last night's Capcom Gamers Day, attendees were entertained by a pair of trapeze artists. However, some of the night's biggest news was made by daredevils of a different kind--the motorcyclists of the MotoGP circuit, which consists of 18 international high-speed races.
Shortly before the buff acrobats took to the air above the event, Capcom executive vice president and American and European software publishing head Mark Beaumont announced that Capcom had struck a deal for "PlayStation format rights" for MotoGP. Previously, Namco owned the rights to make PlayStation MotoGP games, the most recent being last June's MotoGP 4 (PlayStation 2) and last September's MotoGP (PlayStation Portable).
The first Capcom MotoGP game will be MotoGP ’07, which will ship for the PlayStation 2 this fall in North America and Europe. "[We want] to broaden Capcom's portfolio, to really expand the things that appeal on a global basis," Jack Symon, Capcom's director of brand marketing, told GameSpot. "The MotoGP brand is hugely popular in Europe, it's starting to gain momentum in the US. There was a need there to get the PlayStation 2 title out, and we were able to work with them to get the license."
However, the PS2 MotoGP '07 should not be confused for the Xbox 360 MotoGP '07, which is being published by THQ, holder of the Xbox 360 and PC MotoGP licenses. When asked if Capcom plans to acquire those licenses, Symon declined to comment, saying, "We've only announced the PlayStation rights." He also wouldn't say if a new PlayStation 3 or PSP MotoGP game was in the works.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board has leaked its share of games before they were officially announced, but now it appears to have some company from an international counterpart. As spotted by German-language site Xbox-Archiv, the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle this week released a rating for Prince of Persia Classic on the Xbox 360.
How long ago did this come out? Man, talk about the sands of time...
As one would expect, the listing pegs Ubisoft as the game's publisher and the game as an action adventure. The rating board determined that the game is appropriate for ages 12 and up. Given the "classic" moniker and the fact that the game was only rated on the Xbox 360 when Ubisoft's new installments in the series have been multiplatform affairs, it seems more likely this is an Xbox Live Arcade edition of series creator Jordan Mechner's original Prince of Persia computer game.
As of this writing, an Ubisoft representative had not returned GameSpot's request for comment.

Release Notes:
Auto Installer Delux 4.0
Welcome to the latest release of Auto-Installer Deluxe, the All-In-One solution for your Xbox Console. You will need your Xbox to be Modded in order to use this DVD, either by a Modchip, or a Softmod (for example Softmod Installer Deluxe v5.0 which is included with this package.
Not only does it come with the latest up-to-date software, it also has some new features, like a Rom Installer. Due to legal reasons we can not distribute any with this package, but full documentation has been included in the Auto-Installer Deluxe Manual on how to make your own Romsets.
Softmod Installer Deluxe v5.0 is also built into this DVD, so if you have an older Softmod on your Xbox and wish to upgrade, this is not a problem (just remember to unmount any Virtual C Drives first before installing the SID 5 system).
The Addon packs for this version contain all the latest XBMC Skins (Project Mayhem, MC360, xTV, Vision, CEOMR etc), as well as all the latest XBMC Scripts. Even though I haven't specifically made this installer just for XBMC, it is what I have put most of my focus on for this release.
I hope you all enjoy this nice release.
Changes Since v3.10:
* Included a Rom Installer so you can install your romsets alongside the Emulators.
* Removed DHCP functionality from the installer. It is all done now via the Addon Pack which updates the files needed for everything to work and install for DHCP.
* Made multiple skinpacks for XBMC (Normal, Project Mayhem, MC360) so you can now choose what you want and don't want on your disc.
* Cleaned up the disc structure.
* LOTS of Bug fixes.
Software Updates since v3.10:
* DOSXbox 12
* Dvd2Xbox 0.7.8
* FBAxxx 2007-01-28
* FBAxxx Pro 1.28
* Softmod Installer Deluxe 5
* Xbox Media Center 2007-04-08
* ZsnexBox 3.0 Final
Softmod Installer Delux 5.0
Release Notes:
Welcome to the last version of Softmod Installer Deluxe.
This is basically a combination of SID 3.1 and 4.5 in what it does, however the PBL (Phoenix BIOS Loader) Softmod method has been removed and only uses NKPatcher 11.
You can only install the EvolutionX and UnleashX Dashboard from this (due to the size of the 8mb Memory Card limit), however after you Softmod your Xbox you can proceed to use Auto-Installer Deluxe to install another Dashboard (Xbox Media Center for example) and the rest of the Applications and/or Emulators you want.
Enjoy this release.
Due to legal reasons the downloads can not be posted(lots of XDK compiled files). I'm sure that those who want it can head on over to Xbox-hq and see if a link is there.

Yesterday we discussed the mighty expensive Guitar Hero II downloadable content. Some readers had serious complaints, and their views jive with a lot of other commentators out there. Prior to an event related to the game Joystiq had the chance to sit down with Microsoft's Major Nelson, who attempted to frame the conversation and point out the difficulties associated with this project:
"I used to work in the broadcasting industry and in music for a long time and I know that content is not linear. It's not like you go to iTunes, and you're buying the same thing. There's testing that's involved, and there's also licensing involved. There's a lot of elements involved. When there's music involved, that brings up a lot of licensing issues ... You have to consider the Leaderboard. People like to say it's the same [as on the PS2], but the licensing is not the same. You have to re-license it. It's a different platform. While on the surface it may look fairly simplistic, and people are saying 'XYZ should be done,' but we're not Red Octane. I work for Microsoft, and we're just the conduit at this point."

You know how it goes: pictures are fabulous, but videos are probably the next best thing to handling it yourself. In this case, a video walkthrough is about as close as you're going to get to May 7th whilst still chillin' in April, and considering you already know just about everything you can ever desire about the impending update and QWERTY thumboard, why not relearn it all again care of an "official" on-screen walkthrough? You know you can't resist, so be sure to hit the read link and pull up a chair, because you're going to get tired of standing after 25 or so minutes.

EA's revival of the Command & Conquer series on PC has unsurprisingly proved a resounding success, with Tiberium Wars holding the number one spot in the Chart Track all-formats chart for two weeks running.
Whether or not the Xbox 360 version of the RTS will experience the same success we'll discover as of May 11 - which is the release date now confirmed for the console iteration in EA's release schedule.
According to IGN, a Tiberium Wars demo will hit Xbox Live before the full game ships. We contacted EA for further details on the demo but the publisher was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

A 434Mb demo of Artificial Studios' Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia has crept onto Xbox Live.
Epic's Unreal Engine 3 beats away at the heart of the top-down shooter, which finds a group of teenagers battling supernatural monsters in a slice of typical small-town America. It's all presented in B-movie style, with a tongue-in-cheek approach to the horror invasion.
The full game is due out next month, and comes complete with co-op and competitive multiplayer modes that support up to four players.

The DRM enforcing AACS has officially gone into a tizzy. The hacking communities of Xboxhacker and Doom9 came together and found a way to view Volume IDs for any HD DVD played in the Xbox 360 HD DVD player add on. This of course allows any disc to be played, bypassing any AACS authentication and even playing Volume IDs that the AACS previously revoked. Ultimately, the 360's HD DVD player is pretty much the easiest way to bypass DRM and is an integral part of "backing up" your HD DVDs. It'll be interesting to see how the AACS combats this new hack (which makes last week's effort a wash), will they revoke the entire lot of Xbox 360 HD DVD players or will they force a simple firmware update? Be afraid HD fans, this is when DRM enforcement gets scary.

Speaking with Gamasutra, group product manager for Xbox Live, Aaron Greenberg, laid down some new specifics regarding the new Live Messenger functionality coming in the spring update. First, and most importantly, the service will be completely free to both Gold and Silver members. Big surprise, right? The Live Messenger integration is compatible with other versions of Messenger across the board, so users on 360 will be able to chat with users on PC and even mobile devices. Users can open up to 6 separate chats, but group chats are limited to 3 people. Greenberg uses the example of a player on a 360 chatting with a friend at work on a PC and a girlfriend on a cell phone all at once. We're not sure how often that kind of thing comes up, but it's cool nonetheless.
Greenberg also makes a point to allay fears regarding the new thumbboard peripheral. Greenberg notes that the device is very light and shouldn't interfere with the gameplay experience. Furthermore, Greenberg says that he uses thumbboards often, so the peripheral is second nature. Of course, USB keyboards are supported as well.
Discussing concerns of IM spam, Greenberg notes the messenger privacy features. The privacy features of the Xbox 360, including who you can and can't receive messages from, will apply to IM as well. There are also options like appearing online to Live friends but offline to IM friends. Finally, Greenberg says that the Xbox friends list is separate from the IM friends list and that IM friends have a different icon than the typical gamer picture associated with Xbox Live friends.
So, is cross-platform IM something that interests you? Would you be willing to drop a few bucks for the thumbboard? Will you use IM at all?

Seems like a good day for rumors springing from magazines, so why not add one more? This one comes to us courtesy of the Official Xbox Magazine. It seems that a recent press release regarding the next novel in the Perfect Dark series also mentioned a forthcoming sequel to the game itself. Given that Perfect Dark is really one of the only existing Rare IPs that Microsoft can leverage (Donkey Kong is out for obvious reasons), it makes sense that they would be gunning for a sequel. Perfect Dark Zero suffered from more than a few issues, no doubt brought on by a monstrous development cycle that saw the game jump from Gamecube to Xbox to Xbox 360 (the same thing that happened to Kameo, by the way). Considering these previous issues, a sequel designed from the ground up for the 360 is just what the doctor ordered. Still, with Halo 3 coming out later this year and a Gears of War sequel presumably falling in 2008, we wonder where Perfect Dark would fit.
For our two cents, we'd rather see a great sequel to Kameo, as the 360 is woefully short of decent platformers. At any rate, a sequel to Perfect Dark is all but assured. The only question is when.

We may transition from waiting years between Halo releases right into Halo overload extremis. Halo will become the Will Ferrell of the gaming world, and we'll see the Master Chief in every game that comes down the line.
Reader Hashbrown_Hunter sent in a scan from the latest EGM Rumor Mill reporting that it isn't the episodic Peter Jackson project or the Halo Wars RTS that Bungie is currently working on ... so where does that leave us? "Word is another Halo game is in the works," they say. There's always a chance it'll be Halo 2.5, with all the missing single-player levels added in so it doesn't feel so short. And we're also not counting out Halo: Warthog Racing just yet.

In light of yesterday's rumors about Zune 2.0, I'd remembered an anon tip that came in two weeks ago along with this puzzling photograph of a Zune with an approximate 16:9 wide screen. (Compare that to ye old Zune 1.0's screen) I dismissed it then, but now, it makes a little more sense with all this talk of a screen covering 75% of the surface. We're not ones to say if its real or fake. The angle at which the photo is taken would make it harder to hack for an amateur Pchopper. But you can see some strange pixelation on the right side of the screen that looks like someone took a retouching tool to it, and there appears to be a seam higher up on the LCD. It's hard to tell at this resolution. The rest of the email verifies last night's rumor, except for the fact that this 16:9 Zune is sized like the HDD Zune. The info gathered by Zune Scene from a Microsoft employee claims that only the flash Zune had the wider screen. Keep those tips coming, friends. We can't report this one without good sources.
And please remember, these are all rumors. Nothing's official until Microsoft says it is. So don't let your hopes go wild. Steady as she goes.

April 11th, 2007, 19:57 Posted By: wraggster
New details for Grand Theft Auto IV have spilled their way onto the Internet, expanding on what we can expect when the game launches on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this October.
The game will be as significantly different as GTA III was to the previous top-down crime capers, Rockstar founder Dan Houser told Game Informer, and will offer much wider choice and freedom to the player.
As we already know from the trailer, GTA IV will take place in Liberty City (New York) in 2007, and will revolve around an Eastern European fellow. This chap, the main character, is Niko Bellic - an immigrant in search of the "American Dream".
His cousin Roman persuaded him to make the move by boasting a life of luxury, but it eventually turns out he was using this as a cover to hide his own failures. He'll be your only contact until you can find your feet, and ultimately carve out your own destiny.
One of the biggest differences in the new game will be the way you interact with other people. In previous iterations you've been at the beck and call of others, picking up your phone to receive orders. But this time around you'll be able to dial out, calling people to arrange rendezvouses and correlate your own plans. There will still be an element of following someone else's game plan, but the freedom of choice is something Rockstar is proudly standing by.
In GTA IV, four of the five boroughs of New York have been recreated for you to explore, as well as parts of New Jersey. Broker is the equivalent of Brooklyn, Manhattan is now Algonquin, Queens becomes Dukes, the Bronx is Brohan, and New Jersey transforms into Alderney.
While that doesn't give the fourth game the largest geographical playing field in the series, the level of detail and freedom should apparently more than make up for it.
We've already seen the impressive lighting effects, sumptuous skyline, and next-gen sheen from the trailer. What is less evident is the vastly enhanced AI, where NPCs will walk and talk much more convincingly, going about their daily routines around you. And apparently the game will only look better as we get closer to launch.
As with other games you can expect voice acting and an impressive array of radio stations to choose from while you're joyriding in Liberty City. However, it's unlikely we'll see Hollywood actors in the lead roles in this game, as Rockstar is making an effort to choose less well-known talent, both for voices and for the track listing.
Multiplayer is also going to be included this time around, but it isn't going to be an MMORPG. It's going to be something separate to the single-player experience that will be fun, interesting, and progressive.
Technically the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will look and feel the same, and loading screens should be non existent after your initial entry into the world.
However, Microsoft's console will offer that exclusive downloadable content its boasted about at every opportunity, though there's still speculation as to whether the Blu-ray disc will include more to begin with.

An update for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on Xbox 360 that's been released prior to the new Hero and Villain download content - expected today, but yet to materialise - has caused problems for owners of the game.
People that have downloaded the update have discovered its affected the abilities of rare items attached to player characters, the abilities changed at random. Activision has said it "is indeed aware of the various issues on Marvel Ultimate Alliance in relation to the recently released game update" but there's no fix as yet.
"We are currently researching a solution, and truly appreciate your patience in this matter", the publisher said is response to one Xbox 360 gamer who contacted its technical support.
Presumably the Hero and Villain packs, which add eight new playable characters to the game's existing roster, won't be released until this issue is resolved. The update that has caused the problem has been removed from Xbox Live.

Capcom Europe has told CVG that Dead Rising 2 remains a rumour even though details on the sequel have been spotted in Japanese gaming mag, Famitsu.
Internet reports have stated that the follow-up to the company's Xbox 360 zombie splatterfest has been confirmed as being in development in the latest edition of Famitsu, leading to speculation that Dead Rising 2 will be unveiled at a Capcom press event happening in the US this week.
Going by Capcom Europe's comments to CVG, that won't be the case - but you never know.
Dead Rising found a freelance photographer battling zombie hordes in a small-town American shopping mall - rather reminiscent of classic zombie flick Dawn of the Dead.
Plenty of blood and gore was combined with black humour and the game was well-received, although it featured a save system that could cause you to tear your hair out in frustration.

April 11th, 2007, 19:26 Posted By: wraggster
Total War RTS series developer The Creative Assembly is looking at cross-platform play between Xbox 360 and PC with a favourable eye, CVG can reveal.
"As a games developer with an established series of games like Total War, then obviously the cross-platform potential appeals", Brendan Rogers, designer and artist on forthcoming Medieval II expansion Kingdoms told CVG.
But while the developer is taking a positive view of cross-platform play between Xbox 360 and PC, which is introduced with Games for Windows - Live next month, it's not a feature being embraced for the Total War series at this time.
Rogers explained that "bringing the Total War series to the console is not something that is on our radar right now", however he interestingly added that The Creative Assembly doesn't "see any major incompatibility issues with strategy games on the console".
Whether or not the future will witness the Total War marching to Xbox 360 and cross-platform support included for multiplayer we can but wait and see. But whatever The Creative Assembly does tackle after the Kingdoms expansion, we should be ready for it to thrill.
"We're lucky in that Total War offers few limitations in terms of the settings we can consider. We're obviously not in a position to reveal our plans for the future right now but we can certainly say that there are big and exciting Total War plans afoot", Rogers said of what's to come for the series.
