Out of the blue, Midway has released a demo of its forthcoming first-person shooter Blacksite: Area 51 on Xbox Live.
We're currently downloading so what's in the demo will be a surprise, but Major Nelson has offered some background in his blog: "Modern day fears come to life in a familiar, yet extraordinary setting: A small American town swarming with alien life. The government is desperate, struggling to contain secrets so terrible they can no longer be kept.
"Everything hinges on the actions of Aeran Pierce, a former Special Forces assassin thrown into one of the most explosive moments in American history."
Midway has made some big claims about Blacksite: Area 51, saying it'll "redefine the first-person shooter genre" and that it "takes next-gen gaming to an all-new level integrating cutting edge technology, game design and story writing to create the ultimate entertainment experience." Wow.
The game is also in development for PS3 and PC and is expected in Q3 this year.

Sega has unveiled the recently rumoured sequel to its brutal 360-horror launch title, Condemned: Criminal Origins.
We reported back in March that a sequel was rumoured but Sega refused to comment. There aren't any screens yet but the first few details have been released.
Bloodshot will feature new fighting mechanics and online multiplayer functionality, as well as players having to use their detective skills to hunt down and catch "sadistic serial killers". Bloodshot is again developed by Monolith and a release date of "early 2008" has been given.
Once again you assume the role of Ethan Thomas, former Serial Crimes Unit investigator, who gets called back to duty to track down his missing partner. Events from the first game left Ethan a broken man but he has to dig deep to face up to what's round the corner.
Extreme combat is again the main feature and you'll be able to use a variety of firearms, blunt instruments and "an all-new fighting system" complete with defensive and offensive combo chains, as well as grapples and holds. There will obviously be a new set of high-tech forensic tools and murders can be solved in a number of different ways.
The online multiplayer will feature a deathmatch mode, which Sega promises will deliver the "most brutal hand-to-hand combat experience the first person genre has ever seen". It's a million miles away from Sonic...
"Condemned 2: Bloodshot will keep gamers on the edge of their seats," said Scott A. Steinberg, VP of marketing at Sega. "Experience all the tension, psychological terror, and a variety of first-person hand-to-hand fighting mechanics in this innovative atmospheric thriller gamers have been longing for."

Funcom is beefing up its already meaty online portfolio with yet another MMO. Taking place on our earth, in our times will be The Secret World, "inspired by history and mythology, modern conspiracy theories and ancient mysteries" says the publisher.
"We started envisioning this contemporary online world more than ten years ago, and as the years passed the ideas grew and improved," said producer Ragnar Tørnquist. "We always wanted a different kind of online world, something scary and contemporary, something deeper and closer to our reality. Our goal now is to create a detailed world where players feel empowered and part of something big, something mystical and epic."
Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas added, "We believe there are millions of gamers out there who want to explore something beyond traditional fantasy and sci-fi games. The Secret World is just that - a fantastic new setting that will fuel the imagination of online gamers, and keep players busy for years. We have a golden opportunity to bring something fresh and exciting to the genre, and we firmly believe the game is an ideal extension of Funcom's MMO portfolio."
The Secret World has been in development since last summer and the game is in a "playable state" while being produced at Funcom studios in Oslo and Beijing. A release date has not given.

SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announced an exclusive agreement with the award-winning production studio, Mondo Media, to create video game content based on the popular animated series, Happy Tree Friends™. Currently under development by Stainless Studios, Happy Tree Friends False Alarm™ is scheduled for release via digital download on PC and Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE® Arcade in Fall 2007.
"We are excited to be partnering with Mondo Media to bring the irreverent comedy of the Happy Tree Friends to gamers worldwide,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "The dark humor and twisted characters of Happy Tree Friends will act as a great foundation for creating a fun and entertaining universe for gamers and fans of the show alike.”
Happy Tree Friends is a wildly popular Internet phenomenon that debuted as a television series on G4 TV in the U.S. and on MTV in key markets overseas. Selling over one million DVD copies worldwide, Happy Tree Friends continues to thrill audiences online and maintains its position as a top ten most downloaded podcast on iTunes.
Now taking the spotlight with its very own interactive game, Happy Tree Friends False Alarm features the furry woodland creatures in a host of dismembering and ill-fated calamities.
Playing unlike any other action title on the market with its physics-based reactive environment, Happy Tree Friends False Alarm is an action-puzzle game that enables players to control one of three characters; Flippy, the emotionally tattered war-torn bear; Lumpy, the dim-witted blue moose; and Handy, an amputee beaver carpenter always eager to lend a helping limb. Using resources such as concrete, ice, gasoline, and nitroglycerin to augment the dynamic 3D environments, your goal is to save the Happy Tree Friends from hilarious disaster situations and their own bad luck. Play in 10 diverse levels designed exclusively for the Happy Tree Friends False Alarm game including mine shafts, candy factories and a museum, all of which are filled with outrageous outcomes and plenty of accidental mayhem!
“Sega is a perfect partner for us because of their rich tradition of creating compelling, character-based games, and true to form they’re developing a truly original game that we think our fans will love,” said Kenn Navarro, the creator of Happy Tree Friends.
For more information on Happy Tree Friends False Alarm, please visit the company press page at www.sega.com/happytreefriends.

Universe at War: Earth Assault, previously announced for the PC, is now also bringing its troops to the Xbox 360. The Windows version is due out "Holiday 2007" for North America and Europe, while the console version is coming out in the first quarter 2008.
We have to quibble with some of the claims in this press release, however. Said Scott Steinberg, VP of of Marketing for Sega of America, the game is "poised to break new grounds in RTS gaming by entering the console arena ... with a control scheme specifically designed with console gamers in mind, RTS gaming can now conquer the console frontier."
Strategy games have attempted, with varying degrees of success (remember Starcraft 64?), to penetrate the console market. The Xbox 360 has found itself home to two very capably-controlled RTS games: Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II and Command & Conquer 3. (Coincidentally, Universe at War developer Petroglyph Games was formed by former Westwood developers, whose most famous franchise was Command & Conquer before being bought by Electronic Arts.)
Whether or not it's breaking new ground, having another strategy title in the console realm is an expansion of the genre that we're happy to see.

Bungie announced that they've reached their 5 millionth player to experience Halo 2 online. The number refers to unique Live accounts that have played the title. That doesn't mean people stuck with it or that each of those tags belonged to different people. Bungie reached the milestone on the 2.5 year anniversary of the game's launch. The real test of Halo's power will be this fall when we see how well Halo 3 moves Xbox 360 consoles.

Crossover games have tended to pit the characters of one popular property against those of another (Capcom vs. SNK, Alien Versus Predator), but that battle would be horribly lopsided in the case of Gundam and Dynasty Warriors. So, instead of a no-holds-barred battle for brand superiority, the merger of Namco Bandai's space-faring Gundam Mobile Suits and Koei's Dynasty Warriors historical action game set in ancient China takes the key components of each and combines them into one game.
The result, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, brings the futuristic artillery of Namco Bandai's sci-fi series and drops it into the swarming combat of Koei's action series. While the game was previously released for the PlayStation 3 in Japan, the companies today confirmed that it would be arriving for North American audiences on the PS3 as well as the Xbox 360 late this summer.
The game is developed by Koei's Omega Force studio, the team behind the Dynasty Warriors franchise, as well as its Samurai Warriors spin-off. As in the studio's previous titles, players will be able to become key characters on both sides of the storyline and experience battles and plotlines from their own unique perspectives. The game will also include unlockable Mobile Suits from different Gundam timelines and multiple game modes.

It may have taken forever for The Simpsons to reach the big screen, but it looks like Fox isn't wasting any time turning products yellow to tie-in with the movie, following up its Simpons-branded Samsung cellphone with a Homer-fied Xbox 360. Obsessive collectors could be in for a hard time tracking one of these down, however, as Microsoft's only producing 100 units to be given out at a series of special events and promotions. While they've gone all out with the branding, Microsoft has skimped on the console itself a bit, using the 20GB Xbox 360 Pro instead of the Elite. From the looks of it, you also won't be getting EA's just-announced Simpsons game with it, which, for a change, isn't actually based on the movie.

Those crafty chaps at Realtime Worlds have finally detailed the downloadable content we can expect for their excellent free-roaming crime-stopper Crackdown - and is it just us or is this the best DLC line-up for any game, ever?
Reported on Team Xbox, the free DLC for Crackdown includes an option to completely reset gangs, easier orb hunting and a new ground strike move that smashes your agent into the ground with a devestating shockwave.
The premium paid-for content, meanwhile, is looking even more fantastic. Three new vehicles are primed for Marketplace deployment including the Agent Patrol Buggy, slick Agency Pursuit Vehicle and the mammoth Agency Armoured Vehicle, which looks like it could take down a skyscraper in second gear.
But wait, there's more. Five new weapons and pieces of equipment are also inbound and each look to offer a fair bit of variety over the vanilla game's arsenal. The multi-rocket firing Lobber and ragdoll-flinging Harpoon guns are our favourites, while a cloaking device, mini-gun and proximity charge are also on the way.
Phew... game type additions are looking like this - street racing, rooftop races and two-player checkpoint chases are all on the way, as well as a new mode called 'Stockpile' which challenges you to run around the city collecting various orbs against the clock.
There's no release date or pricing details on the DLC yet, but be assured we'll be watching out for this lot and will sound the alarm as soon as it arrives.

As Wing Commander fans we're not sure whether these new Wing Commander Arena screenshots make us happy or sad.
Should we be happy that there's a new instalment coming out or sad that it looks nothing like the rest of the series?
We'll save that rant for the blog, but in the meantime here's the latest shots showing the Xbox Live Arcade version that - with any luck - will be arriving this summer. We've got our fingers crossed EA, please don't disappoint us.

A post on official Forza 2 forums says we should expect the demo of the game to hit today. And they're right. The near-700MB demo is up.
It's around 700MB, and features over 20 vehicles that can be taken for a spin in offline races against 7 AI opponents.

Ahead of this weekend's media bash in Japan Square Enix is holding a press conference right about now... and here are the first images to emerge from the event of its new next-gen RPG The Last Remnant.
Thanks to a sever lack of Japanese skills (we've got Jackson on the job) we don't know much about the game yet, except that it's heading to both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the near future.
It's excellent news for 360 owners of course, who so far have only seen a rough port of the online-only Final Fantasy XI grace Microsoft's box.
The screenshots as well are looking particularly fantastic - but we'll hold off on our gushing until we find out exactly what The Last Remnant is all about.

It's been some time since we last saw Saber Interactive's shooter TimeShift, but it's back today in a new trailer - and it appears the developer's put the game under the knife during the its absence from the public eye.
What we're shown is a darker, more gritty game compared to what we've seen previously, with the lead character looking like he's just stepped out of a Marvel comic book.
But the time-bending heart of the title has remained intact and the trailer shows how slowing, freezing and reversing time is used in gameplay.
check the trailer out to see what you think. TimeShift is in development for PC and Xbox 360.

PC and Xbox 360 action game Shadowrun is out in the UK on June 1, Microsoft has confirmed.
Shadowrun is the first title out the door that supports cross-platform play between PC and Xbox 360, such made possible through Microsoft's Xbox Live and Games for Windows - Live services.
The game is based on the pen and paper RPG of the same name, dropping players into a near-future world where they have access to magic and kick-ass tech and weaponry. You get to fight for global mega-corporation RNA or the spell-loving Lineage and blast things to kingdom come.
Shadowrun is one of only two games announced so far that'll support cross-platform on release. The second is UNO, which is expected to lay its cross-platform cards on the table at the end of the year. It's possible that Valve's Team Fortress 2 will ship with cross-platform support, but nothing's definite.

Splinter Cell fans mark May 18 in your diaries - that's the date that the very first trailer from Conviction, the latest game in the series, will be shown.
Ubisoft calls the trailer an "exclusive reveal trailer" on the Splinter Cell: Conviction website, and it'll be shown on Spike TV's Game Head. But what exactly will be revealed...? We'll have to wait and see.
Details on Conviction have already broken out of course. According to what's been revealed so far, Sam Fisher will find himself operating outside the control of Third Echelon and interestingly the game is played out more in broad daylight as opposed to shadows.

If an Xbox 360 site based in the Netherlands is to be believed, then Sega has a "Vintage Collection" bound for that console. It'll contain at least Sonic the Hedgehog, and we're hoping some other classic titles. One question bugs us though, what took them so long?
Although our Dutch is rusty, we sent the website through a translator and got this poetry, "That Sonic the Hedgehog arrives there we let us not know all, but that the game under the SEGA vintage collection falls."
