You know what goes really well together? Christmas and video games. This year we've noticed a bit of a trend: games giving away free stuff in light of the holiday. Weather, err, whether it's snow covering Los Santos in GTA Online, a six-hour trial of Madden or online multiplayer for Killer Instinct Classic, there's no shortage of goodies to keep your console (maybe you recently unwrapped a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One?) busy for the next few days. Let's recap, shall we? In addition to the aforementioned inclement weather southern San Andreas is experiencing, for a limited time you can don a gingerbread mask in GTA Online and start lethal snowball fights in addition to getting a few unspecified gifts for your inventory tomorrow.

Lizard Squad, the merry band of hackers that claimed responsibility for taking Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network offline for Christmas, appears to have a new target:Tor. Reports of an attack on the network, which offers online anonymity, appeared earlier today, following a warning on December 19th of "Possible upcoming attempts to disable the Tor network."
A Tor spokesperson acknowledged the attacks, but said they were unlikely to have an effect on users' anonymity.
"This looks like a regular attempt at a Sybil attack: the attackers have signed up many new relays in hopes of becoming a large fraction of the network. But even though they are running thousands of new relays, their relays currently make up less than 1% of the Tor network by capacity. We are working now to remove these relays from the network before they become a threat, and we don't expect any anonymity or performance effects based on what we've seen so far.

December 25th, 2014, 22:47 Posted By: wraggster
Merry Christmas, gamers: Both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network are down this morning, apparently due to a denial-of-service attack. The notorious hacking group Lizard Squad -- which already carried out earlier attacks on Microsoft and Sony -- hasclaimed responsibility on Twitter for these latest outages. While the group's role in all of this remains unconfirmed, it's worth noting that the group threatened last week to take down Xbox Live and PSN, according to Business Insider. And again, Lizard Squad has already proven it can successfully pull off such attacks, not to mention othermalicious pranks.
Whatever the cause, the timing is obviously terrible: Plenty of people surely received one of the two consoles as Christmas presents today, while many more gamers would have happily spent the afternoon in front of the TV. In the meantime, both Sony and Microsoft have acknowledged the problem, with Sony issuing a tweet and Microsoft posting a message on its support website: "We're working to address this as quickly as we possibly can," reads its status website. "Thanks for your patience, Xbox members." In an email, a Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment further or say when the company expects to restore service. We've also asked Sony to comment and will update this post if and when it does.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Microsoft is planning to reveal its own virtual reality headset for Xbox One next year, according to reports.
The headset is said to be revealed at the E3 gaming trade show in June next year, and it may be released later on in the year.
VRFocus reports that developers are working on the Xbox One VR head-mounted display already.
No information about the device or what video games are in development for it have been released, but the headset will compete alongside the likes of the Oculus Rift.
PCR also received word about a month ago that Microsoft was developing wearable tech for the Xbox One.
This news comes after Microsoft launched a cloud-powered fitness band earlier this year.
The band will retail for $199 (£125) and will track things such as heart rate and calories.

DesmumeX v0.6 is released. DesmumeX is a Nintendo DS emulator for Xbox. It is based on the version 0.9 of Desmume, plus the port DSONPSP of Yoshihiro, and some specific changes for Xbox. Besides, lots of things related to 3D functionality have been gathered from version 0.9.2, and the dynamic recompiler has been taken from the 0.9.10 version.
Please, don't expect a good emulation in many of your roms. This emulator is still not fully optimized. Anyways, this version can play some games quite well.
IMPORTANT: To toggle between the different display modes, press the BLACK BUTTON (read the "Controls" section for more information). If all the action happens in only one screen, you will feel a much better experience if you choose to show only that screen at full resolution
Only uncompressed roms are supported.
what is new
esmumeX v0.6 is the same than v0.5, but it has a boost of around 10%, because it uses the idea of weinerschnitzel related to building libraries with a faster compiler (GCC or Intel C++) and calling these libraries from a Xbox application.
This has given us a small boost, and now several 2D games can be playable with the correct settings (New Zealand Story, Bubble Bobble Double Shoot, Bubble Bobble Revolution...).
Remember that when you have selected a configuration for your rom in the GUI, you can press the "Y" button (before starting to play the game) and then the emulator will create a config file for that game (stored in the "cfg" folder). Next time that you play that game, the emulator will "remember" your favorite configuration. This system needs that the folder "cfg" is existing, to be able to create the config files.
I have detected that this boost idea has broken at least one game (Dementium) and probably a few more, but I will try to fix this in later versions.
Source code is included, as an example of splitting it in an optimized library for the emulator core and a dummy main application for the Xbox related core.
important
* Roms MUST be placed in the "roms" directory.
* Roms must be UNCOMPRESSED, with the .NDS extension.
* Games can be trimmed with a program like "NDSTokyoTrim25Beta2.exe" to make them smaller, and they will use less space in disk.
* This emulator can only work from hard disk.
This is a new release of DesmumeX, the Nintendo DS emulator for Xbox. It is faster than the previous version, because it uses the idea of weinerschnitzel related to using optimized code in a Xbox application. The source code is included as an example of how to split the code in a library (to be compiled with GCC or Intel C++ compilers) and a main application (with the Xbox related code) as we have been discussing in these forums recently.

The Xbox One was originally announced as a console that would bring games, movies, television and other entertainment together in one place. Recently-instated head of Xbox Phil Spencer may be more about the "games" part of the equation, but that doesn't mean the console has stopped supporting its secondary functions. Case in point: This week, the Xbox One has received apps for Pandora, Vevo, Bravo, Telemundo and Popcornflix.
If you're unfamiliar with any of the above, here's a quick rundown:- Pandora is an online music service that creates playlists based on the input you give it. Enter "Aerosmith" for example, and you'll wind up with a station that plays classic rock.
- If you like to engage your eyeballs at the same time as your eardrums, Vevo hosts a collection of music videos to enjoy.
- Bravo Now is an app that lets you watch full episodes of Bravo programming such as The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills andGirlfriends' Guide to Divorce.
- The Telemundo Now app operates on the same concept: Log in with your service provider and watch full episodes of Telemundo novelas, shows and specials.
- Popcornflix is a free video streaming service that hosts hundreds of films at no additional cost.
Enjoy your music and movies, señors and señoritas.

You haven't had many choices for streaming music on the Xbox One so far; you've largely been limited to Xbox Music or the occasional YouTube mix. You'll have some proper options very shortly, though. Apps for both Pandora's internet radio service (US-only) and Vevo's music videos (in 14 countries) are reaching the game consolethis week. The two apps don't have any surprising Xbox-specific features in store, but they'll definitely help if you need some tunes for your next house party. And don't worry, movie and TV fans -- you'll get a few apps as well. Bravo Now and Telemundo Now let American TV subscribers stream shows from those networks on demand, while Popcornflix gives North Americans "hundreds" of free movies. If your Xbox One doubles as your media center, you're in for a treat in the days ahead.

Atari Jaguar emulator for Microsoft XBOX has been updated. Changes:
- Speed improvement, using an optimized library. Some games work faster, and other games have better audio now.
- Rayman works with sound now, and it starts faster due to a BIOS boost trick.
- Other games run better than previous version. Pitfall is a good example. Other games like Double Dragon 5, Cannon Fodder, Evolution-Dino Dudes or Worms, work near perfect now. This is due to the optimized library trick.
- The GUI has a few improvements: roms are sorted by name, and you can use the triggers to advance quickly by the rom list.

December 14th, 2014, 21:53 Posted By: wraggster
In September, Microsoft revealed that core components of the Windows 10 operating system would be added to the Xbox One in a 2015 update, though scant further information was available. According to Xbox division head Phil Spencer, all the crucial details are coming in January.
The goal of this cross-platform integration is user convenience. By including features of the Windows 10 operating system in the Xbox One, Microsoft makes things much easier for developers looking to port their games from one device to another, say from the PC to the Xbox One, or from the Xbox One to a Windows Phone device. In a world where people can easily own half a dozen gaming devices, this is a very attractive feature, especially to smaller developers who lack massive budgets.
Spencer will appear at a Microsoft event at the computing giant's Redmond, Washington campus on January 21 to lay out his course of action. If you can't make it to the Pacific Northwest, you'll be able to watch a live stream of the event. Details on when and where you'll find that stream are reportedly coming soon.

The latest addition to Microsoft's burgeoning lineup of console media options is a Showtime app that offers both live and on-demand access to the network's programming.
Those with valid subscriptions to Showtime can download the app at no charge and use it to stream unlimited hours of select, archived Showtime programming including recent hit series like Homeland and Dexter. If you find too much choice in media options paralyzing, you can instead watch either the West Coast or East Coast live feeds of Showtime through the app. Helpfully, for those who enjoy lengthy TV marathons, the Showtime Anytime app allows users to start a show on one device, pause it, then resume watching on another device (such as a smartphone or tablet) using the same app.
If you don't have a Showtime subscription, but are an Xbox Live user, you will be able to download the Showtime Anytime app at no cost, but its content will be limited. Select previews of programs will be available, but no substantial programming.

When Twitch announced that some changes were coming down the pike, it cited video-on-demand as one of the key reasons for the controversial tweaks to its game-broadcasting service. Well, with the additions to the outfit's Xbox One app it looks like the dream of accessing your favorite channel's past streams and highlights -- instead of just live broadcasts -- are a reality. Twitch says that the archived 'casts will become a part of a given user's channel page "gradually," and that it's going to be a rollout that spans throughout 2015 as your favorite channels come online with "the new system." What's more, no estimate was given regarding a timeframe for the feature to hit other platforms. VOD is just scratching the surface, though.
