"If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards," said former Xbox chief Don Mattrick, explaining why Xbox One wouldn't play Xbox 360 games mere days after it was unveiled. If that's the case, then the Xbox world under new division head Phil Spencer may be as backwards as the average Justin Bieber hat. According to Xbox partner development lead Frank Savage, Microsoft is working on a solution to get Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, but players at home may never get to experience it themselves.
When asked by an audience member at Microsoft's Build developer conference whether the company had plans for backwards compatibility on Xbox One, Savage responded in the affirmative but with a serious caveat. Getting software made for drastically different hardware to run on another machine is a tricky proposition.
"There are [plans], but we're not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately," said Savage, as reported by Kotaku Australia. "It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there's nothing to announce, but I would love to see it myself."
A Microsoft representative reiterated Savage's statement to Engadget in a follow up inquiry, but also stressed that there are no official plans to bring Xbox 360 compatibility to consumer Xbox Ones any time soon. "It is super challenging to emulate two completely different architectures, and there aren't currently any plans to build this," said the spokesperson.
Players clinging desperately to those copies of Perfect Dark: Zero andBomberman: Act Zero, don't get rid of your Xbox 360s just yet.

Microsoft offered a few more details on upcoming updates for Xbox One in the form of three new features that testers can preview. First, firmware updates for the Xbox One controller and headset adapter will improve wireless connectivity and are expected to reduce static heard over the headset. Microsoft also plans to update the Blu-ray player app and add support for 50 Hz video output. Lastly, the console will quietly reboot following future updates, so owners won't need to manually turn their systems back on after they update, providing the system is in Instant On mode.
Microsoft discussed a suite of SmartGlass options for Xbox One last week, bringing snap functionality, mobile Xbox Live alerts and easier navigation to the companion app along with the ability to view Xbox content on any Microsoft device. The company also detailed improved voice commands and friend notifications in mid-March, announced plans for external storage support on the system last week and just announced an update to the Xbox One YouTube app yesterday to allow users to upload clips to the video platform.

The recently released Xbox 360 version of Respawn Entertainment's mech-dropping first-person shooter Titanfall maintains an average unlocked framerate of 46.5 frames-per-second, gaming performance analysis site Digital Foundry reports.
Digital Foundry finds that the Xbox 360 version of Titanfall runs at a 1040x600 native resolution, compared to the Xbox One's 1408x792 resolution. The Xbox 360 version boasts an unlocked framerate of up to 60 frames-per-second, along with an option to lock the framerate at 30 FPS to eliminate screen tearing and input lag.
Presentation-wise, Digital Foundry notes that the Xbox 360 version of Titanfallhas "a necessary reduction in texture detail compared to the other versions, but nothing that overtly compromises the look of the game."
The testing results are consistent with pre-release claims from porting studio Bluepoint Games, which promised a framerate above 30 frames-per-second in the final Xbox 360 version of Titanfall.

Rockstar will launch the capture jobs creation system in GTA Online this Friday, April 11 and is offering a rewards boost in select online missions until then. Starting Friday, Grand Theft Auto 5 players can use the GTA Online Creator Tool to build missions using one of four capture job variants: Contend, GTA, Hold or Raid. For those unfamiliar, Rockstar describes the capture jobs as a "GTA twist on classic capture the flag style confrontations."
To get players accustomed to the job style's unique brand of action, the developer upped the reward levels for all official capture jobs in GTA Online. Until Friday, jobs like "GTA: All Abhorred" and "Raid: High Road" will earn players double the GTA$ and RP.

A new Xbox One system update has been released to players who have signed up for the Xbox Update Preview programme.
According to Microsoft, the new update fixes a number of issues regarding Blu-ray playback and controller issues. It also adds a new feature enabling players to manually install downloaded updates instead of having to start a game to do so.
Players who are part of the Xbox Update Preview beta programme will have the new system update now ahead of its general release in the near future. The full list of changes, as detailed by Microsoft, are as follows:Fixes
- Ongoing fixes and adjustments to the user interface.
- Additional fixes to address audio crackling sound encountered when Dolby Digital is enabled.
- Fixes for Blu-ray software issues that can result in 0x21 or 0x87de07d1 errors.
- Update to address an issue where ejecting a Blu-ray disc after the drive is idle can result in the disc being pulled back in, requiring a second eject
- command.
- Fix to address Kinect not responding to "yes" or "no" after issuing the "Xbox, turn off" command.
- Updates to reduce or eliminate Blu-ray drive "seeking" sounds after drive is idle (experienced in the 1403 update.)
- New controller firmware update - to help address controller disconnect issues, and to help address headset adapter audio quality.
- Fix for LiveTV audio outputting in stereo instead of surround sound.
- Update for the Blu-ray player to fix an issue where it can freeze if left idle or paused for an extended period of time.
- Update to fix an issue where fast forwarding or rewinding an external video source results in screen freezing when surround sound is enabled.
- Fix for video playback stuttering while audio plays back normally in several apps (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, etc.)
Features Enabled
- Game save progress bar will now display when syncing cloud game saves.
- 50Hz Blu-ray player support for content recorded at 50Hz.
- Improved GameDVR video quality.
- Online friends notification, including the ability to filter notifications to all friends, favorites only, or disable friends online notifications altogether.
- *NEW FEATURE* Requested by the update preview community: Manually install available updates. If a new system update is detected as available, a button will appear under Settings, System that will display "System Update." Note: this feature is being enabled after this current update completes installation. This feature will be available to preview when the next update is made available.
- *NEW FEATURE* A new ability to automatically redeem a license code from console messages. For future console messages that include a 5x5 license code, a new option will appear to allow you to automatically redeem the license, versus having to copy and paste the license code.
Known Issues
- Some preview participants may encounter an issue where the Blu-ray drive will not ingest a disc after the console has been idle for a period of time. The disc will need to be removed and re-inserted for the disc to be ingested. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
- Some preview participants may encounter an issue where some non-Blu-ray disc media types are pulled back into the Blu-ray disc drive after being ejected, requiring a second eject command. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
- In this version of the 1404 update, the startup process of a console doing a cold boot up (systems that are configured for power saving mode, versus instant on) will encounter a delay of approximately 30 seconds, during which a solid black screen is displayed. This issue is not present for consoles powering up from a standby state. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
- During silent update installation some devices controlled by the Xbox One via IR (TVs, receivers) may power up in the middle of the update process and not power back down. The developers are investigating this issue.

Xbox 360 emulation on the Xbox One has not been ruled out, according to comments made by Xbox partner development lead Frank Savage.
Speaking at Microsoft's Build developer conference in San Francisco last week, as attended by Kotaku, Savage replied to queries regarding whether the company has plans for Xbox 360 emulation on the Xbox One.
"There are [plans]," he said. "But we're not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately.
"It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there's nothing to announce, but I would love to see it myself."
Since the console's release in November last year, Microsoft has not announced firm plans for either emulation or backwards compatibility.
While Sony intends to support backwards compatibility using its Gaikai-powered PlayStation Now service, a Microsoft spokesperson said in November that a similar service is unlikely to come to the Xbox One, citing the difficulty of managing the quality of the service.
"It's really cool and really problematic, all at the same time, insofar as it's really super cool if you happen to have the world's most awesome internet connection. It works way better than you'd expect it to," Albert Penello said at the time.

PlayStation Network's TV offerings are not a competitive threat to Xbox's original programming, Xbox Entertainment Studios boss Nancy Tellem has said.
Tellem told Bloomberg that Xbox Entertainment Studios has been working for a year and a half on creating its content, which is set to debut in June.
"Microsoft's dedicated a whole studio to support this kind of content development," Tellem said. "Original content is something that everyone's toying with right now. It's very unclear how committed they are to that on PlayStation."
Sony's first show will be based on 'Powers', a comic series created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oemin. The source material follows homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who are tasked with dealing with cases involving people with superhuman or supernatural abilities.
Tellem said that the array of franchises available to her studio as a part of Microsoft was a "wonderful discovery" when she first arrived.
"Whether it's from a game like Fable, or Age of Empires, or Gears of War, or Forza... or Halo," Tellem said. "These are things that, frankly if we weren't attached to Microsoft, everyone would yearn to have. It's an amazing platform to work from."
Announced alongside Xbox One in May 2013, the Halo TV show is set to go into production via a new partnership between development group 343 Industries and producer Steven Spielberg. District 9 director Neil Blomkamp will reportedly direct the series' pilot episode.

Though Microsoft has yet to produce any original TV programming, it has Netflix-like ambitions, according to a report from Bloomberg. Xbox's TV studio, headed by ex-CBS exec Nancy Tellem, now has at least six series in production and three in development. Those include a sketch show from JASH (founded by Sarah Silverman, Michael Sera and others), a Seth Green stop-animation series andHumans, based on a creepy Swedish thriller about replicant-like robots. Those go along with the previously announced Halo TV series produced by Steven Spielberg, a Halo "digital feature," soccer reality show Every Street United, and an Atari documentary. Xbox's new chief Phil Spencer said all shows will be selected to help draw users to the Xbox platform, and won't be approved unless there's a gaming or interactive angle. There are also a number of others under consideration, so hopefully the budget can stretch to a series with giant brawling robots.
Update: Microsoft has told us that the JASH sketch comedy show and Seth Green stop-animation projects are under under development, not in production. The post has been updated to reflect that. Check after the break for a complete list of announced projects.

Back in January, GoPro tipped us off that it was bringing a dedicated channel to Xbox 360 and Xbox One. At the time, we didn't really have much more info, other than it was a port of the company's existing offering that had been entertaining Virgin America customers since last fall. Today Tomorrow we get to see it for real. Well, that's if you're an Xbox 360 owner -- because as promised it's landing there first. If you're an Xbox Live Gold subscriber, then you're basically all set, ready to enjoy some of the exclusive content that GoPro is slinging onto the channel by means of launch celebration (teasers for which, are after the break). As well as viewing curated GoPro videos, users will also (handily) be able to purchase cameras and accessories without even putting down the controller, including the exact kit used in that particular video. While there's still no word on when it will land on the latest generations Xbox (other than "summer"), we're fairly confident you'll be able to view your fave triple cork videos on even more devices and platforms by the end of the year.

We can all agree that sharing gameplay footage on Xbox One via SkyDriveOneDrive isn't really the best social solution. Okay, so there's Twitch, too, but the holy grail of video sharing lies with YouTube. And, as of tomorrow, Xbox One owners will get just that as an app update will bring the much desired ability to share Game DVR footage directly to a user's YouTube channel. It's really as simple as that. Once the update hits, you'll need to dive into the console's settings menu and enable the social sharing feature first, but that's about as deep as it gets.

Microsoft is updating the YouTube app on Xbox One to allow players to upload gameplay clips directly to the video platform starting tomorrow. The app will integrate with the Game DVR and Upload services already present on the console; players will just need to enter the system's settings, select "Share game clips" and then "Share on social network" to access the YouTube upload option. Additionally, the updated app will allow users to view YouTube videos in snap mode, add them to Pins, add channels to OneGuide and earn media achievements on Xbox One.
Microsoft also announced the GoPro app for Xbox 360, which allows users to "stream and curate" videos created using the brand of high-definition personal cameras. GoPro app users will also be able to purchase cameras within the app through Microsoft's online store. The app will require an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
The Xbox One's trek into the livestreaming and video sharing realm was marked by the addition of Twitch broadcasting in March, which saw 108,000 broadcasters in the first week. While having the ability to upload content to YouTube directly will be ideal for many users, one hopes that the history ofgameplay videos being flagged by the platform's Content ID Match system doesn't prove to be an issue.

When Microsoft revealed the Xbox One's independent developer program (and more recently, universal Windows apps) we hoped it could provide access for more than just games -- and it looks like that's happening. Developer Tyson Edwardsreveals he's been approved by ID@Xbox to develop a Plex client for Xbox One, bringing better access to video, music and photo streaming than the console's DLNA support or web browser can provide.
While the work going on isn't an official Plex project, they could base an official client on its technology. Tyson tells us he's working to bring all the features of the current Windows 8 Modern UI Plex app to Xbox One, plus voice and motion control via Kinect. He says the platform has been surprisingly easy to work with so far, and since universal Windows apps won't be available until later this year, an Xbox-specific version will be released "as soon as it's ready." So PS4, it's your move on media support -- DLNA, MP3, Blu-ray 3D, CD, anything?

Really, Microsoft? You just asked gamers to go through the hassle of updating their Xbox One gamepads in March, yet there's word on NeoGAF that the next patch -- currently in testing -- will once again bundle "new controller firmware." Yes, the (hopefully optional) code should fix connection and headset quality issues that are even more of a pain, but it's doubtful that Xbox owners will relish plugging in peripherals a second time to get reliability that should have been present on day one. At least users can take comfort in new system features added to the list of coming updates, including a button to check for future software updates manually and redeeming codes directly from Xbox Live messages. Let's just hope that gamepad upgrades are less frequent from here on out.

Xbox One support for external game storage will be introduced in the near future.
Answering questions on Reddit, Xbox Live director of programming Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb said: "External game storage is coming soon.... I need to check on media support."
Asked whether there'll be a limit to external storage like Xbox 360's 32 GB, he replied: "When I have details on that, I'll let you know."
Hryb also said that he couldn't provide on update on when Microsoft will introduce localised Kinect voice command support in additional countries like Ireland.
Former Xbox chief product officer Marc Whitten said in early March that introducing support for external hard drives is one of the company's main priorities for future Xbox One system updates.
"We value all of the feedback we're getting from you," he said. "We know external hard drive storage is another big one on your list, It's on our list too. We're working on that for a future update and will keep you posted."
April's Xbox One update will include new game save features and friend notifications, plus improved Kinect and game DVR functionality.

Microsoft is reportedly gifting a free week of Xbox Live Gold to Xbox One users who were affected by the March 11 Xbox Live outages.
According to IGN, citing reports from a number of users, the platform holder is sending notifications of the offer via the Xbox Live messaging system.
"We know you experienced an issue signing in on your Xbox One on 3.11.2014," reads the message. "We apologize and will soon give you 7 days of Xbox Live Gold for your inconvenience."
Outages on the service on March 11 affected users' ability to log into their Xbox One consoles, and also interrupted matchmaking for Forza 5 and Titanfall - the latter of which launched in US that same day.
Microsoft insisted that the issues were not related to the Titanfall launch.
In recent weeks Microsoft has issued two further Xbox Live service warnings for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Warnings on March 25 andApril 1 affected gaming, social and purchasing features on both consoles.

If you've considered the Surface Pro 2 to be more than just a portable workstation, then Microsoft's latest tablet bundle might pique your interest. In collaboration with online culture show Geek & Sundry, the company has quietly pushed live a new gaming deal on its virtual store in the US and Canada that throws in $105 worth of free games and accessories. For $899, the price of the base 64GB Surface Pro 2 model that's already included, you'll also get a wireless Xbox 360 controller and two games: Farming Simulator 2013 and a premium pack for free-to-play WWII flying simulator War Thunder. To be clear, neither title will vie for any upcoming gaming awards, but you can't argue with free, right? Microsoft intends to run the offer until May 1st or until stocks run out, whichever comes sooner, so if you've been waiting for the right opportunity to grab yourself a Surface Pro 2, now might be the time to click in.

Microsoft’s ongoing work with Xbox One’s development tools is NOT helping its machine catch up with the apparently still superior technical performance of PS4, it is now being said.
MCV this morning reported on claims from Lorne Lanning, co-founder of Oddworld developer Oddworld Inhabitants, that the gap between Xbox One and PS4 performance is narrowing.
However, the CEO of Oddworld publisher Just Add Water Stewart Gilray has subsequently corrected Lanning, this time insisting that the comments about Xbox One’s improvements were actually regarding budgets and scheduling.
“Actually that is not what he said,” Gilray told Worlds Factory. “I spoke to Lorne afterwards and what he meant when speaking to that guy was that budgets, schedules and perceivable differences would narrow, not that the Xbox One performance is improving to align with PS4, that is just physically impossible.
“The PS4 has more compute units, and faster memory and a whole bunch of things, that would make that physically impossible to happen.”

There will not be an Xbox 360 or PS3 version of the as-of-yet undated Doom beta.
It was revealed in February that Wolfenstein: The New Order on PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360 will include access to the Doom beta.
However, as spotted by Videogamer, it has since been confirmed that the beta itself will be a next-gen only affair.
"If you purchase an Xbox 360 or Xbox One version of Wolfenstein: The New Order, you will receive an invitation to the Xbox One Doom beta. PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 purchasers will receive an invite to the PS4 Doom beta," the game's official website says.
“All PC purchases will receive an invite to the PC Doom beta. The Doom Beta will only be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC."
Also confirmed is that Xbox Live Gold membership will be required for the Xbox One beta but PS Plus membership is not needed for PS4 players.
Wolfenstein: New Order is released on May 20th. The Doom beta remains undated.
