Microsoft will redesign Xbox One's operating system in order to make it more intuitive for users who don't ownKinect.
The news follows Tuesday's announcement that the company plans to launch a cheaper version of Xbox One that does not come with a Kinect sensor.
Xbox marketing lead Yusuf Mehdi told Engadget the move would have an impact on the console's front-end, which was originally designed with Kinect and voice activation in mind.
Since some players in the future will not have immediate access to Kinect or voice controls, Mehdi said Microsoft is working on tweaking its menus to make them easier to navigate with a controller.
"We do want to find ways to give you some of those shortcuts and make some of the things that we have with Kinect easier with the controller," he explained. "You can expect to see us do a bunch of things over the coming months to make the experience easier and easier, even if you don't have a Kinect."
Mehdi said these changes are likely to arrive shortly after E3, noting: "We're still kind of working through that."
Beginning June 9, in all markets where Xbox One is sold, Microsoft will offer the console without Kinect starting at $399 USD / £349 GBP, down from the original RRP of $499 USD / £425 GBP.
Breaking the news on Xbox.com, department head Phil Spencer insisted that, despite the major policy reversal, the motion sensor remains an important part of Microsoft's vision for Xbox One.

British development studio Zoe Mode has expressed its disappointment at Microsoft's decision to release an Xbox One without Kinect.
The Brighton-based studio is known for its work on Sony's SingStar and EyeToy Play series, and most recently found success with its Zumba Fitness titles.
Zumba Fitness World PartyStudio head Paul Mottram has told Develop that while he understands Microsoft's decision to no longer make Kinect mandatory, he's unhappy at what this will mean for the future of the peripheral.
"I imagine this decision wasn't taken lightly, but it's understandable as they need to compete with the PS4 on price," he said. "However, whilst it wasn't perfect, Kinect helped differentiate the platforms, which can only be a good thing.
"From a developer point of view it's a shame, as it all but kills the chances of making an original Kinect title unless it is a major licensed fitness or dance product. And even those will suffer as it's unlikely we'll see Kinect 2 units even come close to the installed base of the original now. Even then it was a challenge."
Mottram has also expressed sympathy for studios currently working on Kinect titles, suggesting they have "had the rug pulled from beneath them and may now stand little chance of seeing a return on their investment".
This week a number of Harmonix staff members currently working on Kinect-only title Fantasia: Music Evolved took to Twitter to express their disappointment at Microsoft's decision.
A CVG poll asking whether Microsoft was right to drop mandatory Kinect on Xbox One is currently 50/50 with almost 2,000 votes cast.

May 14th, 2014, 21:57 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft is now in talks with publishers about increasing graphical performance for Xbox One games running on Kinect-less consoles.
Confirmation that Microsoft is actively discussing its ability to squeeze more juice from its machine comes from exec Yusuf Mehdi, who told Polygon that the topic was currently being broached."We are in discussions with our game publishers about what we might do in this space and we will have more to talk about soon," he said.Xbox One currently fences off a fixed portion of its GPU for handling system-level Kinect functions - such as the ability to listen for voice commands and recognise gestures, whether you're playing a game, using an app, or simply sitting on your dashboard.Digital Foundry previously revealed that Xbox One reserves 10 per cent of of its graphics resources for Kinect and apps functionality, and that Microsoft was planning to open this space up for game development at some point in the future. With Kinect-less Xbox One consoles soon to be on shop shelves, that point is now apparently here."Xbox One has a conservative 10 per cent time-sliced reservation on the GPU for system processing. This is used both for the GPGPU processing for Kinect and for the rendering of concurrent system content such as snap mode," Microsoft's Andrew Goossen explained."The current reservation provides strong isolation between the title and the system and simplifies game development - strong isolation means that the system workloads, which are variable, won't perturb the performance of the game rendering. In the future, we plan to open up more options to developers to access this GPU reservation time while maintaining full system functionality."Xbox One versions of multi-platform games have frequently failed to hit the resolution and frame-rates of PlayStation 4 versions. Not only is this a technical disadvantage, but a failing in the ongoing war of perception among gamers that PS4 is more powerful.Just last night, Ubisoft announced that Watch Dogs would run at 792p on Xbox One, but 900p on PS4. Microsoft will surely be keen to close this gap as soon as possible.

It must have hurt to do it, but Microsoft's decision to strip Kinect out of Xbox One and lower the price of the console feels like the right one overall. The problems it solves were simply too important to get hung up on the problems it creates. This is pretty much the same decision Sony executives made about the PlayStation Camera behind closed doors early last year, allowing them to hit a much lower price than Microsoft at the PlayStation 4 launch. That decision upset a few developers and publishers who had been told they could plan around the camera's inclusion with confidence, but those tensions have been smoothed over by the console's success.Xbox One has sold in decent numbers as well, but comparing the figures to Xbox 360 was never going to impress anyone while PS4 was busy setting new records. Microsoft waited to see whether Titanfall would bridge the gap and allow it to maintain a higher price, but when that didn't happen and Kinect Sports Rivals flopped, the logic of cutting the price and ditching Kinect to pay for it must have been too compelling to ignore. It's another embarrassing U-turn, then, but Microsoft gets some cover with investors at least by pointing to new management. CEO Satya Nadella and Head of Xbox Phil Spencer are both recently appointed or promoted, and they are setting a new strategy, which is the sort of thing financial markets understand. It will be harder to look the console's early adopters in the eye, but then most of them were Kinect's loudest detractors, so they may even view the situation as an improvement.Removing Kinect from every Xbox One sold will also discourage Kinect game developers, of course, but as the old joke goes, I'm sure both of them will get over it. The former Xbox 360 peripheral was once a record-setting sales success, but only once, and a lack of compelling new gameplay ideas has been its main problem for the last three years.

Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners will be able to cancel and get a refund for their remaining Xbox Live Gold subscription when Microsoft lifts its entertainment app paywall.
The move is designed to placate users who only have a subscription to access services like 4OD or Netflix, or software like Internet Explorer and Skype - all of which will soon be free to use.But theoretically anyone can take up Microsoft's offer. You'll need to submit a request online after Microsoft removes its paywall next month and before 31st August 2014, the company detailed in a new FAQ post."Once the Xbox One and Xbox 360 system updates become available in June, Xbox Live Gold members who purchased a paid membership before that day can cancel and receive a pro-rata refund of any unused remaining days between the date of cancellation and the date their paid Gold membership ends."Cancellation and pro-rata refund requests must be made by August 31, 2014 and require six to eight weeks for processing. Free or trial Gold memberships are not eligible for a refund. To request your pro-rata refund, please click support.xbox.com/contact-us after the system updates become available in June."Microsoft announced the upcoming paywall removal yesterday as part of a sweeping set of changes that will see Games with Gold added to Xbox One, and the console itself offered without Kinect.

May 13th, 2014, 23:16 Posted By: wraggster
This morning, less than a year after Microsoft unveiled its Xbox One, the game console's price dropped from $500 to $400. How's Microsoft making up for the price difference? By removing Kinect, of course. The camera/microphone peripheral introduced halfway through Xbox 360's life cycle was a standard in every Xbox One sold since launch last November, but no longer. As of this June, a second option will exist on retailer shelves. A less expensive option. And Xbox marketing lead Yusuf Mehdi is all about that option:"We have 80-plus million Xbox 360 users today who want an Xbox One, and many of them tell us, 'For me, it's an affordability issue. I'm gonna get there, it's just a question of time. If you make it more affordable, then I'll upgrade faster.' So this is an opportunity to really make it easier for them to get there at their pace."

May 13th, 2014, 22:57 Posted By: wraggster
Available on June 9th, the £350 Kinect-less Xbox One is Microsoft’s biggest U-turn yet and represents a complete reversal of its controversial E3 strategy outline.
It’s also the console’s second UK price drop since arriving in the UK last November, a period that has seen £80 shaved off the machine’s price. Note this is the console’s first price drop outside of the UK.
It also confirmed the decision to free video streaming apps such as Netflix from their subscription shackles, meaning Xbox Live Silver members will be able to access them.
“Your feedback matters to us and it shapes the products and services we build,” Xbox boss Phil Spencer said.
“This is a new console option that does not include Kinect. Next, we’re bringing more value to Xbox Live Gold members and offering all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners access to entertainment apps whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership.”
Games With Gold is also being stepped up – in June the offer will include Dark Souls, Charlie Murder and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition on Xbox 360. The service will also hit Xbox One in June, launching with discount of between 50-75 per cent for Forza 5 and Ryse and free copies of Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Halo: Spartan Assault for subscribers.
“To be clear, as we introduce this new Xbox One console option, Kinect remains an important part of our vision,” Spencer insisted. “Many of you are using Kinect for Xbox One every day. In fact, more than 80 per cent of you are actively using Kinect, with an average of 120 voice commands per month on each console.
“If you buy Xbox One for $399 and later decide you want to have all the experiences Kinect enables, we will also offer a standalone sensor for Xbox One later this fall.”

May 13th, 2014, 22:55 Posted By: wraggster
Piers Harding-Rolls is director and head of games at analyst IHS Technology. Here, he delivers his verdict on today’s Microsoft announcements. In what is becoming a relatively common strategy of news control for consumer electronics and technology companies before major trade events, Microsoft has confirmed it will sell a standalone version of the Xbox One without Kinect at a MSRP of $399/£349 starting from June 9th, the day of its press event at E3. The company has also confirmed it will be increasing value of the free Xbox Live service by bringing entertainment apps out from behind the Gold paywall. Lastly, Microsoft has confirmed that Games With Gold will be coming to Xbox One in June and has confirmed the inclusion of Halo: Spartan Assault and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood for free.Microsoft has made a bold but sensible decision to compete on a level playing field with Sony’s PS4 as the company’s come head-to-head at E3. Ultimately the company has decided to sacrifice the necessity of Kinect to reduce purchasing friction and collapse the price differential between the two consoles. There is now a much more gamer focused edge to the Xbox One positioning, which will only help Microsoft in these opening stages of the latest console cycle. [h=1]Why drop the Kinect requirement?[/h]Microsoft has framed the decision to sell a standalone SKU of its new console as a response to feedback from its existing and potential users – its fans – to drop the requirement of the Kinect motion and voice sensing accessory and to offer more choice. The fact is that while the Kinect functionality is nice to have, for many its value proposition does not match up to the price increment of the Xbox One over the PS4 at this point of the cycle. This has been clear to see, with PS4 outselling Xbox One in Europe strongly and to a lesser degree in its home market of USA as well. As such, the move is primarily about removing friction from the buying process for the Xbox One. The decision to shift entertainment apps outside the paywall will also help its positioning against Sony’s console: online video remains a hugely important feature in terms of device usage and consumer engagement, so having this behind a paywall is counter-productive.Microsoft has confirmed that a standalone SKU has been in the works for a number of months, although the fact that both new smaller packaging or a standalone Xbox One Kinect SKU won’t be available until the later in the year also suggests that this move has been brought forward from the end of the year. IHS believes this is a response to the strength of PS4 sales and also that E3 represents an opportunity for the company to refocus its message on the gamer and regain some sales momentum. A similar opportunity will not come again in 2014 before the holiday sales season. It’s sensible to suggest that a standalone version was always on the table and as such this is not a full strategic u-turn, although the fact that Kinect has been somewhat sacrificed at this early stage will have stung at Microsoft and may not have been possible without a change in leadership at Xbox.

One of Microsoft's big announcements today was the restructuring of Xbox Live Gold; the company will now allow Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners to use entertainment apps like Netflix and HBO Go without requiring a paid Xbox Live subscription. As Microsoft's Phil Spencer clarified to Joystiq today, the latest in a series of "Xbox One-80s" doesn't apply to free-to-play and subscription-based online games.
"Right now we haven't changed the policy on MMOs and free-to-play games," Spencer said. While not getting into specifics, he noted that with some games there are "engineering constraints, policy constraints and partner constraints in each one of these scenarios," so the decision to keep games behind the Xbox Live paywall reportedly doesn't rest solely in Microsoft's hands.
Bethesda's latest MMORPG, The Elder Scrolls Online, will still require a Gold subscription on top of the developer's own monthly fees. For the time being, at least; Microsoft has "about six months" to consider changing its policies, as the game was recently delayed for consoles. The developer was in talks with Microsoft back in August to cut the extra fees for The Elder Scrolls Online, which won't be enforced by Sony via PlayStation Plus for PS4.

Microsoft announced this morning it will no longer keep Netflix, Hulu and other streaming apps behind the company's Xbox Live Gold paywall.
"Coming in June, anyone with an Xbox will be able to access popular entertainment experiences – whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership," the company stated on Xbox.com. "This includes great gaming apps like Machinima, Twitch and Upload, popular video services like Netflix, Univision Deportes, GoPro, Red Bull TV and HBO GO, sports experiences like the NFL app for Xbox One, MLB.TV, NBA Game Time, NHL Game Center and more."
This announcement was bundled with word of an Xbox One console available in June without a Kinect. A year later and the Xbox One-80 reversal is still going strong from the console's vision a year ago, as the company shifts executivesand puts the focus of Xbox One back on games.
Sony's PlayStation consoles and Nintendo's Wii U have never charged a premium for access to streaming services.

Microsoft has announced that it will release a new lineup of Xbox One consoles that do not include the Kinect motion-sensing peripheral.
Starting June 9, Microsoft will offer Kinect-less Xbox One hardware bundles at $399 in North America and £349 in the UK. Microsoft cites customer feedback as the driving force behind the Xbox One's new hardware options.
The Kinect was bundled with every Xbox One sold since the console's launch last year. A standalone Xbox One Kinect sensor will be released at retail this fall.

Users in Microsoft's Xbox One preview programme have received a second firmware update in as many weeks, this time focusing on party chat and system update fixes.Version 1405 changes the console's "Get System Update" button so the option is now greyed-out if there is no system update to download, (thanks, DualShockers). The button will display the text "Update console" if new firmware is available.Issues where Party Chat would be muted unless the Party app was snapped have also been fixed, as is a bug which saw Game DVR clips recorded without audio.Microsoft has recently upped the pace of its firmware releases and now posts one large patch every month for all users.A smaller set of fixes is available to test more frequently for those opted-in to the console's preview programme.More new features are expected to be revealed - and possibly released - around E3. One of the most highly-anticipated features is the option to pre-load games before release and have them unlock automatically on launch day.

Like a pilot shadowing its powerful tank of a Titan, Bluepoint Games' Xbox 360 version of Titanfall followed Respawn Entertainment's Xbox One and PC versions out of the launch gates. Given that Bluepoint is tasked with mirroring Respawn's game as closely as possible on less powerful hardware, the follow-me strategy makes a lot of sense - so much so that it's going to continue with future content updates, including free patches and the Expedition DLC.
"We have [Bluepoint] following Respawn's lead bringing updates and improvements to the Xbox 360," a post on the Titanfall website reads. "We are fully committed to supporting the Xbox 360 version and to ensure that regardless of what platform you play Titanfall on, the experience is as good as can be."
The post notes that Bluepoint is currently working on the Expedition DLC in addition to Content Update 2, which added the gooser challenge and support for private matches to the Xbox One and PC versions. Expedition will reach the Xbox One and PC in May for $10, with Bluepoint's follow-up planned to reach the Xbox 360 in June.

Microsoft will take control of the next-gen race in North America if it releases a cut price Xbox One without Kinect, analyst IDC has claimed.
International Data Corporation predicts that while PS4 will have the single biggest share of the market in 2016 with 51m hardware units sold globally, Microsoft can still take control of the North American market, Games Industryreports.
"The presumed unbundling of Kinect and Xbox One, which should facilitate rough price parity between it and the PS4, should lead to a spike in Xbox One sales,” it said. “Assuming the console and sensor are unbundled in 2015, IDC expects Xbox One to recover and emerge with the largest installed base of any console in North America by the end of 2016."
Also on the way later this year or early next, IDC predicts, is a $50 price cut for Wii U although this “won't make a serious dent in the installed base gap between Wii U and the competition”.
IDC also reckons that physical games sales will plummet this generation with a decline to the tune of 45 per cent compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3 era. This means that despite a predicted growth in digital sales the console sector still faces a generational decline of around ten per cent.

Many looked at Titanfall as being the first tentpole game for the Xbox One, but how many people actually bought it? It turns out 925,000 units were sold through for the quarter, according to publisher Electronic Arts' latest earnings call. Unfortunately, Chief Operating Officer Peter Moore was citing NPD numbers and those don't include digital or world-wide sales, and thus copies bought via EA's Origin PC service or from the Xbox One's dashboard don't factor into that tally. The Xbox 360 version? It's "off to a great start," but Moore didn't go into specifics.Back in April, the NPD reported that the mech game was a top-seller for March and the second-best performing game for the Xbox One -- seeing hard numbers gives a better picture for how well gaming is doing on the new consoles. WhileTitanfall's numbers are impressive, it's worth remembering that Infamous: Second Son sold more than that on a single platform globally (Titanfall's numbers combined the PC and Xbox One sales) in nine days both physically and via digitally distributed copies.
