To celebrate Comic Con (and convince people to ignore Spider-Man in favor of the Xbox Lounge), Microsoft is awarding 20 lucky fans exclusive Xbox One consoles patterned after games such as Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2.
Entering to win one of these machines is relatively easy (assuming you're at this year's San Diego Comic Con). Simply visit the Xbox Lounge on the second floor of the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel, find the display case containing the exclusive Xbox One designs, take a photo of your favorite with the "#XboxOne" and "#XboxSweeps" hashtags attached, and you're entered in the drawing.
If you can't attend Comic Con but would still like an Xbox One emblazoned with promotional imagery, Microsoft is also giving away a custom Nerdist Industries console to those at home. Details on how you can win that machine have yet to appear, but Microsoft claims a tweet is coming soon which will outline the entire process.

We love portable console builds, and this one by [Daniel Fürstauer] is no exception. It’s a beautifully hacked Xbox 360 slim into an aluminum briefcase — complete with a screen and a full audio system!
He started by gutting the Xbox 360 slim and throwing out pretty much all of the original enclosure, minus the disc drive cover. Now what he did next was completely for aesthetics, but freaking awesome. He actually took the motherboard out, taped off some of the important components, and spray painted the entire thing white! We’re not too sure what effect this will have on some of the components, but it seems to work, and gives it a really unique look underneath his Plexiglas enclosure.
He housed the rest of it (complete with custom cooling fans!) inside of one of those nice aluminum briefcases, complete with a widescreen LCD monitor, and computer speakers. He even fit the power supply inside — all you have to do is plug it in! There’s also room for at least one controller, whose holding spot doubles as space for the disc drive to eject. [Read more...]

For the past few years now, [Downing] has been working on the dream of all console modders – a console made in the last ten years made portable. He’s spend a lot of time on the effort, and now thanks to a commission, he’s finally done it. Not just one console, either: this thing makes both the Xbox 360 and PS3 a handheld, battery-powered device thanks to some awesome wireless tech and a great deal of skill.
A few months ago, [Downing] and friends [Hailrazer] and [RDC] started a Kickstarter for the Cross Plane, a portable device that uses a wireless HDMI transmitter to offload the heavy and hot parts of running a game to a console, while the display and controls are kept portable. That Kickstarter didn’t see the success [Downing] was looking for, but that didn’t stop one enthusiastic supporter from commissioning a piece.
The display in the Cross Plane is a 7″ HD display, and the latency on the WHDMI transmitter is just about 1ms – basically unnoticeable. The controls on the front of the portable are wired to ‘controller packs’ that plug into the back, one for Xbox and one for PS3. The build quality is immaculate, and if you’ve ever wanted to know how to expertly finish a 3D printed part so it looks like it came off an assembly line, you should probably check out the build log.

Xbox Live is currently issuing a service alert to notify subscribers that Microsoft's online gaming hub is having issues with a handful of video apps and even the company's own Xbox Video service.
According to the alert, some Xbox Live members are unable to download Xbox Video items that they've already purchased. Microsoft claims to be working on a solution, but so far no fix has come to light. "We appreciate your patience during this process and will update you again when we have more information," the alert states.
Additionally, the alert notes that both the Xbox Live Twitch app and its PBS contemporary are experiencing playback issues, while the Netflix app is having trouble on Xbox One. Microsoft likewise claims to be working on solutions for these issues, and assures customers that more information will be coming shortly.

[source: Phoenix @ realmodscene.com] Some of you might know us from F3, the soon to be number 2 dashboard replacement for Xbox 360. We are Phoenix, and we bring you Aurora, the new number one dashboard replacement! With Aurora we went back to the core of what a dashboard should do, which is launch your titles, and look fancy while doing that. Aurora boots straight into the title list and uses filters and sort instead of predefined tabs. Written from the ground up it has been optimized to run fast, smooth and stable. This is the first alpha version we want to share with you, while it contains disabled features and probably some bugs, it has proven to be pretty stable already.

A Battlefield Hardline beta will be available on "all platforms" ahead of the game's launch.
The game is scheduled for release on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on October 21 in North America, October 23 in Europe, and October 24 in the UK.
Publisher EA launched a Battlefield Hardline multiplayer beta last Monday, which is currently available to PC and PS4 players.
"We will have a beta on all platforms before release," DICE's General Manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson told OXM. "But it won't be this beta on Xbox. It's not going to be the same version, just to be clear."
DICE said last week that it's considering introducing early access schemes for its future Battlefield games to help ensure more stable product launches.
Troedsson explained: "We basically have code in the hands of players already, here at E3. We've never done that before. We do it both because we want their feedback of course, but also because in the background we are testing various things. We're going to continue doing more tests like this."
Hardline is set against the backdrop of "the war on crime and the battle between cops and criminals."
Dead Space studio Visceral Games is leading development of the upcoming shooter, with assistance from DICE.
Visceral VP Steve Papoutsis has said the studio is "adding new twists and turns to the foundation of Battlefield multiplayer".

Microsoft's E3 2014 press conference was notable for its focus on games, but one Xbox One feature, touted when the console was revealed last year as one of its unique selling points, was conspicuous by its absence. There was not one mention of "the cloud" during Microsoft's 90 minute presentation, either from Xbox boss Phil Spencer or the many developers that took to the stage to talk about their games.Instead, we heard the term "dedicated servers" over and over again. This after Microsoft spent a great deal of time and effort insisting the power of the cloud would revolutionise gaming as we know it.I remember attending a behind closed doors presentation on the power of the cloud during last year's E3, and listening to Microsoft engineering manager Jeff Henshaw tell a small gathering of journalists that Xbox One's 300,000 server cloud gave the next generation console a unique advantage. Developers could, Microsoft said, offload complex CPU work to the cloud, resulting in more impressive games - in theory. The problem was, no-one really understood what the cloud meant, exactly, or how it would improve games on Xbox One, save for Forza 5 having AI with "human intelligence". It was a confusing, abstract message muddied further by the term itself: the cloud, a marketing slogan without substance. In the end it was Titanfall developer Respawn, via a blog post, that explained the benefit of the Xbox One cloud best - and even then it was hard to wrap your head around exactly how it worked. Now Titanfall has released, the power of the cloud seems to have been something of a damp squib. It seems the cloud, in the short term at least, is about dedicated servers and how they make multiplayer gaming more seamless. And that - finally - is how Microsoft is now referring to the cloud."You picked up on exactly that," Phil Harrison told me at E3 last week."Xbox Live is the service. Dedicated servers is the benefit. That is the reason why these games are going to be better, why the experience for multiplayer is going to be better."And we're being clear, hopefully around all of the games that will take advantage of it, whether it is a game like Forza Horizon 2, or whether it's Halo: The Master Chief Collection, particularly the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta."So what does this mean for Xbox One games? Dedicated servers was mentioned in relation to a raft of upcoming Xbox One exclusives, including racing game Forza Horizon 2, from UK studio Playground Games, Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive with its eight-player multiplayer, Halo: The Master Chief Collection's nostalgia-fuelled multiplayer, Lionhead's Fable: Legends with its four versus one multiplayer, and Crackdown, from Dave Jones and his mystery team, which features open world co-op.All these games will benefit from dedicated servers. But what about the true power of the cloud as Microsoft described it one year ago?It turns out the new Crackdown, which will surely lean heavily on co-op play, was shown off before E3 via a demo created for Microsoft's developer-focused Build 2014 conference.

Microsoft’s decision to drop Kinect from the new £349 Xbox One SKU will actually increase the number of Kinect units sold.
That’s according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who toldPolygon: "This might seem backwards, but I believe the decision we made to allow people to buy Xbox One without Kinect included, in the end, will actually lead to more Kinects in the market.
"I believe that you've got to sell the console before you can sell Kinect. Price point is important. I had to give people a choice when they come in to go buy a console, that we have a console that's at a competitive price, that's at an entry price for them.
"We've got to be competitive with the Xbox One console, and then we're going to allow people to add Kinect later when they can. They can buy it standalone. If they want to buy it day one, I still think that's the best Xbox One experience over the long run, but giving them choice will let us grow the largest install base of Xbox One customers, and those who choose to, will actually add Kinect to it as well."
Microsoft was at E3 very open about its gratitude for the substantial feedback it has received regarding Xbox One policy which, Spencer said, has helped it bring significant improvement to the console.
It seems it’s somewhat less flexible regarding the PR line regarding Kinect, however.

A life of crime balances risk with the tantalizing lure of bigger targets, and Overkill Software's co-operative shooter is gunning for its biggest holdup yet with Payday 2: Crimewave Edition on Xbox One and PS4. The related press release notes that the port is packing "enhanced features and a stash of new bonus content" in its dollar-sign-emblazoned knapsack, but further details are laying low for now, along with a price and release date.
When Payday 2 started its campaign of stickups in August, our review described it as a "nonstop series of little stories and moments of surprise."

Most of us have fallen for the allure of Xbox Achievements at some point since their arrival with the Xbox 360. If you're still incessantly bumping your Gamerscore, the Xbox One July update's inclusion of Achievement Snap should be up your alley – rather than stopping your game to check progress, you'll soon be able to track real-time achievement progression with a quick glance to the right side of your screen.
Conquering overly-vague achievement descriptions or challenging feats will also be a bit easier, thanks to a "Get Help" option that will be offered under whichever challenge a user has highlighted. Once clicked, the prompt searches the web for helpful links and videos. You can pin the Achievements they're focusing on at the top of the snapped app, too.
The update will also allow you to launch Snap Center by double-tapping a button. Unfortunately, the Xbox Wire announcement doesn't specify which button that is, and only suggests to "double-tap the button on your controller." If you've already got an app attached, the same double tap will switch between controlling the app and whichever game you're playing. Language options for players in New Zealand, Ireland and Austria will be another addition, with players in those regions soon being able to use the English and German voice models from other countries if they better suit their style of speech.
Users will also be able to "Like" Game DVR clips and posts in their SmartGlass activity feeds, but more interestingly, the update's description mentions support for future digital bundles and compilation discs. This is described as something to grant publishers "options for great digital bundle and disc compilation offerings," with the post suggesting that we'll see "more flexible combinations of game titles and game content" as the feature is tested. Sounds like something that could be used to bundle pieces of DLC or base games together, hopefully with the inclusion of a reasonable price tag.

Massive Chalice, Double Fine's turn-based strategy game, is coming to Xbox One as a console exclusive in early 2015. The added Xbox One launch will not impact the game's scheduled PC release – for Kickstarter backers first.
"We thought we'd kick out a quick update to clear up any confusion that this might cause," Double Fine writes in a Kickstarter update. "Nothing has changed with our plans to bring Massive Chalice to the PC and to make it available for our backers first. YEAH! During this time we'll be porting the game to the Xbox One."
