Last month, Microsoft announced it will no longer keep entertainment apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus and HBO Go behind its Xbox Live premium paywall. The change to its Xbox Live service structure is now in effect, allowing non-paying users to use the aforementioned apps in addition to ones like Twitch, MLB.TV, NBA Game Time, YouTube and more.
Microsoft's decision to modify its free and paid Xbox Live service offerings was announced the same day as the $399 Kinect-less Xbox One console, which will be available starting Monday, June 9. Free-to-play and subscription-based games like The Elder Scrolls Online will still require a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription to play online, however.

The brutal temple explorer, Aban Hawkins and the 1,001 Spikes, apparently hasn't claimed enough lives as it is, because it's setting its sights on a fresh field of meat hiding behind Xbox controllers. The death-filled platformer will deploy its traps on the Xbox One user base on June 10, whom we can only hope enjoy getting squished by falling stones, stung into their graves by scorpions, burnt to a crisp by lava or tenderized by an abundance of spikes.
1,001 Spikes started cutting adventures short last week on PS4, Vita, Steam, 3DS and Wii U. Our own Sam Prell became much more porous in his attempt to persevere through 1,001 Spikes' hazardous pathways, explaining that the option to skip levels feels like "cutting its legs out from under itself" in its deflation of a sense of accomplishment.

Forza Horizon 2 on Xbox One will run at 1080p and locked at 30 frames per second, Creative Director Ralph Fulton told IGN.
"I think what we did on Horizon was demonstrate that, and this is really important, a locked frame rate that's absolutely solid and never drops is the most important thing for our game," Fulton said. "30 [fps] actually enables us to realize that experience." He continued, "I think I remember that's always a hot-button topic, until a game comes out and people go, 'Oh, this actually really works.' But 1080p was an absolute must for us; it's the benchmark for next-gen."
Forza Horizon 2 takes place in Southern Europe.
Fulton is with Playground Games, the studio developing the Xbox One version of Forza Horizon 2. The Xbox 360 edition is in development at Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed studio, Sumo Digital. Forza Horizon 2 is due out in the fall on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

There you were, using your Xbox One, thinking how much you'd like to watch a variety of six second video clips. Right? Maybe? Okay, maybe you were using your Xbox One, thinking how much you'd like to see a list of what's trending on Twitter? Alright, let's stop kidding ourselves: there's a high likelihood no one is doing those things, but Microsoft is answering the non-existent call regardless and adding both services to the Xbox One. Those are just two of the 45 new apps heading to Xbox One, including the long-promised HBO Go app, Comedy Central, Watch ABC and more. Moreover, the "most popular experiences" are scheduled to launch "by the end of this holiday season." Head below for the full, lengthy list of new apps and a video showing off Twitter integration. Spoilers: it's pretty silly!

The official Mexican Xbox Twitter account would appear to be hinting at plans to announce a Halo 2 Anniversary remake at E3 next week.
A recent update and an attached image spotted by NeoGAFmembers asks followers to recall E3 2003, when the first Halo 2 demo was shown, and E3 2004, when the first multiplayer demo featured 12 people playing the Zanzibar map.
An Xbox One remake of Halo 2 is in development and set for release in November 2014, to coincide with the tenth birthday of Bungie's original Xbox game, sources with an insight into Microsoft's software plans told CVG in January.
The title first came to light via a whistle blowing NeoGAF post, which CVG sources were able to partially verify.
An anonymous poster on the popular forum went on to claim that the Anniversary sequel will include access to a future Halo beta test and a new live-action show, similar to 2012's Forward Unto Dawn, although CVG was unable to verify these specific claims.
[h=6]RELATED[/h]NEWS[h=1]Halo development director 'annoyed' by insider leaks[/h]Halo: The Master Chief Collection rumoured to be set for release later this year
This information appeared to rule out Halo 5 arriving before 2015. This was confirmed last month, when Microsoft named and dated Halo 5 Guardians for release on Xbox One in autumn 2015.
Shortly after, Engadget reported that the long-rumoured Halo 2 revival for Xbox One will come as part of a compilation also featuring Halo 1, 3 and 4. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is said to be the title of the package, which is expected to tell the full story of Spartan 117 ahead of his next outing.
Titled 'Game On', Microsoft's E3 2014 media briefing will begin on June 9 at 9:30am PT / 12:30am ET / 5:30pm BST.

A number of Watch Dogs owners have been left unable to load the game due to a bug with the title's uPlay rewards, reports suggest. In an enormous 197-page thread on Ubisoft's official forum, countless users have said that they can't play the game after redeeming uPlay content on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. But others, meanwhile, have downloaded the content and remained unaffected.
A number of extras are available to those who interact with the uPlay app or via uPlay.com.For example, you can unlock a gold-coloured D50 gun and the Papavero Stealth Edition car that helps you evade detection, as well as cash bonus reward and a uPlay avatar. It's the first two of these that are apparently causing problems. When booting a save, the progress bar will get to around 90 per cent and then refuse to move further, meaning users are left at the game's title screen.Ubisoft has said it is aware of the issue and is now "isolating" the problem."We're aware some of you are stuck on the loading screen," read a message posted to the official Watch Dogs Twitter account last night. "We're hard at work on isolating the problem to find a fix.""If you're encountering that issue, please submit a ticket to http://support.ubi.com to help move forward. Thanks for understanding."In the meantime, it's probably best that you don't download those uPlay extras until the problem is fixed.Regardless of the issue, Watch Dogs is generally off to a stellar start. Over 4m copies have now been sold, making it the biggest game launch in Ubisoft's history and the best new launch for a game IP ever in the US and UK.

Microsoft has named another slew of entertainment apps on the way for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, including Now TV and Sky News in the UK.45 new apps are on the list, posted to Xbox Wire, although only 13 are UK-applicable.All will be released "by the end of this holiday season", although Sky previously toldEurogamer to expect Now TV on Xbox One "by summer".Disappointingly, there's still no sign of BBC iPlayer, which has been available on PlayStation 4 since that console's launch. UPDATE 10.25pm: Microsoft has confirmed that this boost in performance is in fact due to Kinect being stripped from the package. When asked if the two were related, a Microsoft spokesperson sent Eurogamer the following response:"Yes, the additional resources allow access to up to 10 per cent additional GPU performance. We're committed to giving developers new tools and flexibility to make their Xbox One games even better by giving them the option to use the GPU reserve in whatever way is best for them and their games."And will this mean more games will hit the 1080p 60fps benchmark that's all the rage these days, I asked?"Xbox One games look beautiful and have rich gameplay and platform features. How developers choose to access the extra GPU performance for their games will be up to them. We have started working with a number of developers on how they can best take advantage of these changes. We will have more to share in the future."Microsoft also offered the following statement on the dev kit update in general:“Just as we're committed to making ongoing system updates for our fans to enjoy new features of Xbox One, we're also committed to giving developers new tools and flexibility to make their Xbox One games even better. In June we're releasing a new SDK making it possible for developers to access additional GPU resources previously reserved for Kinect and system functions. The team is continually calibrating the system to determine how we can give developers more capabilities. With this SDK, we will include new options for how developers can use the system reserve as well as more flexibility in our natural user interface reserve (voice and gesture). We'll continue to work closely with developers to help them bring great games to Xbox One.”ORIGINAL STORY 9.21pm: Xbox One dev kits are receiving an increase in GPU bandwidth this month, announced head of Xbox Phil Spencer today on Twitter."June #XboxOne software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth. More performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better," the Microsoft exec wrote.Could this new potential have anything to do with the console no longer being tethered to Kinect all the time? Also, will it mean more games will hit the 1080p 60fps benchmark that's all the rage these days? We've asked Microsoft to clarify what sorts of performance boosts we can expect from this and will update as we find out more.

Remember when we told you that the next big Batman game was arriving on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in 2014? That was apparently a stone cold lie. Well, at the time it wasn't, but as of today, we're in the wrong -- Batman: Arkham Knightis now heading to the aforementioned game playing devices in 2015. When in 2015? That remains shrouded in darkness, like so much of The Dark Knight's life. But when it does arrive, it'll come with a tank-like virtual Batmobile (pictured above). And apparently the game has a tank mode? Find out whatever that meansin the trailer below.

Microsoft has announced a host of new World Cup functionality for Xbox One.
It’s going by the name Destination Brazil and will arrive on the console on June 12th – the same day the tournament kicks off with hosts Brazil squaring off against Croatia.
First off there’s Brazil Now, a customisable experience that can be snapped to anything you’re doing on the console that provides constant World Cup updates and stats.
It can be customised for your favourite team and offers real-time stats when watching the live matches – the first time that such smart-TV functionality has been available in the UK. There are also interactive polls regarding such things as referee decisions and score predictions.
Furthermore, Xbox Live Gold membership is not required.
Next up is Every Street United, meanwhile, is an interactive TV show in which former Arsenal and France forward Thierry Henry and Dutch legend Edgar Davids go out in search of unrecognised street football talents. That kicks off on June 15th.
Microsoft has also partnered with football-themed YouTube channel Copa90 to offer a number of their services for free throughout the tournament.
In addition, Microsoft Stores in North America will offer all those who buy a copy of FIFA 14 an exclusive mini Xbox ball
Everything has also been designed to work with EA’s FIFA 14 Ultimate Team: FIFA World Cup mode, too.

Now that Forza Motorsport 5 is dishing out realistic driving, it's time for the Xbox-exclusive series to swing back to open-world arcade racing: meet Forza Horizon 2. While the announcement at IGN doesn't show much (unless you really like box shots), it promises a few big upgrades for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamers, including a weather system that hasn't been in previous Forza titles. You'll also get an adaptation of Forza 5's Drivatar technology that should deliver slightly more authentic (read: mistake-prone) AI opponents based on your friends. Naturally, Xbox One players will get a visual upgrade at the same time. You'll have to wait until the fall to give Horizon 2 a spin, but we suspect that Microsoft and developer Playground Games will have more to say about it at E3 next week.

The Xbox 360 version of Dark Souls is now free to downloadfor Xbox Live Gold subscribers as part of the Games with Gold offering.
Weighing in at 3.81 GB, the title is normally priced at £14.99 / $19.99 on Microsoft's digital marketplace.
CVG's Dark Souls review concluded: "Its stupefying breadth will surely capture your imagination like few other worlds you've explored in games - and because of that, Dark Souls is, simply, an RPG to die for."
June's Xbox 360 Games with Gold offering will also include free Charlie Murder and Super Street Fighter IV downloads, from the 16th-30th of the month.
Games with Gold will launch on Xbox One later this month with Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Halo: Spartan Assault.
A single Gold membership will provide owners with access to the free games for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One, although the service will differ on the two consoles in one important way. On Xbox 360, users are still granted access to free game downloads even if their subscription lapses, but on Xbox One, users will be required to maintain their subscription in order to access freely downloaded games.
Microsoft will no longer gate entertainment apps behind a Gold subscription following a June system update. It will offer a refund to current subscribers who no longer wish to use the service in light of the upcoming changes.

The people behind the Dawn of War and Company of Heroes real-time strategy games have got an idea for how to do the genre right on console - but they're keeping it a secret for now. There have been few successful RTS games on console. Perhaps the most successful was Ensemble's Halo Wars on Xbox 360. Most agree, however, that RTS is best played with a mouse and keyboard. But Relic's game director Quinn Duffy has other ideas. During a recent interview about The Western Front Armies, the upcoming standalone DLC for Company of Heroes 2, Duffy told Eurogamer the studio has come up with a "plausible solution" to the RTS on console problem."There was always a talk of strategy games on console," Duffy said. "We were just like, 'oh my God, how do you do that?' We think we came up with a plausible solution, which I'm not going to talk about."There's some stuff that's been back burnered for years because we wanted to see how technology, the market, control and touch emerged. Hopefully we will be positioned to adapt to some of that."Even though Relic has something up its sleeve for RTS on console, Duffy admits that the mouse and keyboard will probably remain the ideal control input for the genre. "The purist interface control of a traditional strategy game is mouse and keyboard," he said. And, even if RTS emerged on console, Duffy said he doubted console and PC players would be pitted against each other in multiplayer matches, simply because it wouldn't be fair on console players. "I don't know if you'd ever get them playing against each other."But, elements of strategy, such as squad control, the god view, are perfectly doable on console. "But not in the same way," Duffy explained."There would need to be some changes. But I think it's possible. You need to stretch the boundaries a little bit."

Microsoft has confirmed the existence of Forza Horizon 2, revealing via IGN that it is indeed coming to Xbox One later this year. More surprisingly, it's also coming to the Xbox 360.While it was previously believed that the sequel to 2012's open-world driving game would be set in America's Deep South thanks to some leaked artwork, it appears that Forza Horizon 2 will instead be heading closer to home with Southern Europe acting as the backdrop.Playground Games, a team formed of Codemasters veterans based in Leamington Spa, will again be taking on development duties, working closely alongside mainline Forza developer Turn 10.Forza Horizon 2 will be featuring a weather system, as well as the Drivatars - a way of populating a game with AI's built around the characteristics and driving styles of your friends - from Forza Motorsport 5. There will be 'hundreds' of cars, but leading the way on Forza Horizon 2's boxart is the Lamborghini Huracán.The original Forza Horizon was one of our games of 2012, and arguably one of the last generations' very finest racing experiences. Hopefully we'll find more out at E3.

Microsoft has created a new app it hopes will get people watching the World Cup on their Xbox Ones.Brazil Now, created by Soho Studios, maker of the original Sky Player on Xbox 360 and Kinect Sesame Street TV, includes a notification system for alerts for when games kick off and goals are scored, a live social experience for when you're watching a game, and real-time data for updated scores and statistics.Like other apps on the Xbox One, you can have Brazil Now running in the background or you can snap it to the side of the screen. Either way, the notifications system will send you alerts that pop up at the bottom of the screen, like when you get an Xbox Achievement, to let you know when matches are about to kick off and when goals have gone in.When you get a notification, you can press the Xbox One guide button to quickly jump to the match, if you have your TV feed going into the Xbox One via HDMI pass-through and you're using OneGuide, due out in the UK as part of the console's June update.Microsoft demoed the notifications system to Eurogamer last week and it looks and sounds pretty useful, but there is a concern it could get annoying. As you'd expect, you can turn the notifications off if you don't fancy the intrusion.Toby Heap, executive producer at Soho Studios, told Eurogamer Brazil Now is something of an experiment for Microsoft, and the developers will react to feedback from the Xbox One community."We don't know what you're going to be doing all of the time," he said. "We've never done this before. We don't know if it's going to be incredibly helpful and you're going to go, 'that's the most amazing thing I've ever had and I can't live without it,' or you'll go, 'yeah, it's kinda cool, but when I'm watching the game I don't want any extra information because it's a bit noisy.' Or, when I'm playing FIFA, just give me all my screen back and when something happens I'll just jump in and check it out."So we'll learn a huge amount throughout the competition, like how do people actually use this thing? What do they like? What do they not like? What can we do better? What can we do differently?"If you go all in with the Brazil Now app while you're watching a live match, it'll prod you to offer your opinion as part of a community reaction. The app will ask you questions at punctuation points, such as controversial moments (when Wayne Rooney inevitably gets sent off, perhaps, or breaks his metatarsal).Following a goal, the app might ask, "was that the best goal of the tournament?" You then have a limited time to vote in a quick poll, answering yes or no. The app will then display the global result and show you how your vote compared to your friends'."We're trying to be a little bit provocative," said Heap, who promised not to spam users with polls. "We're trying to be interesting and have a conversation with our audience and capture not just what you think as an individual but what, for example, all the England fans think? Or all the Italy fans think?"As an incentive, Microsoft has created 96 cards you unlock if your vote is in the majority. There are three per team, and if you manage to unlock all three for a particular team you reveal an image of the full team squad. The 96 cards are challenges, which are part of the Xbox One's wide achievement system but don't feature Gamerscore."It's a nice nod to gaming and interactivity," Heap said. "Hopefully people will say, 'you know what? I can watch the match anywhere, but if I watch it on Xbox I can win these things and compete with my friends and have this live social experience."Microsoft will even send professional photographers to all the matches at the World Cup, taking pictures of the crowd, the build up, the stadium, the match and its incidents and will upload them to the app.

A demo for EA Sports UFC will hit PS4 and Xbox One on June 3, EA announced today.
According to a match-poster styled teaser image shared on the game's official Twitter account, the demo will feature UFC fighters Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson.
The pairing mirrors September 2013's UFC 165 event, in which Jones bested Gustafsson. The two are slated to fight again at UFC 177 in August, though the teaser notes that "The Rematch Begins Here."
An EA Sports UFC video released on Wednesday explores the game'sstrategic submission system.
Players who finish the game's career mode on Pro difficulty or higher willunlock martial artist Bruce Lee as a playable character in the Flyweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight and Lightweight divisions. Alternatively, those who pre-order the game will receive a code to access Lee instantly.
The EA Sports UFC release date is June 17 in North America and June 20 in the UK. Get our impressions of the game in this EA Sports UFC preview published earlier this month.
