Microsoft has announced a new early access program for independent titles, called Xbox Game Preview. With this service, you'll have the ability to play games that are in active development and provide feedback about them to their creators -- similar to what Steam currently does with its community. Xbox Game Preview is expected to roll out later today on Xbox One, featuring indies such as The Long Dark, Sheltered, Elite: Dangerous, Day Z andmore. This is yet another move by Microsoft to further support the ID@Xbox program, which it's been focused on growing since its introduction in 2013.

When Microsoft said it had a new Xbox One user experience in store at E3, it wasn't joking around. The company has unveiled its redesigned console interface, and it has very little in common with the tile-based UI you use today. The focuses here are on speed and community -- there's a quick menu for some of your most common tasks, and a prominent activity feed shows what your friends are up to. Oh, and Microsoft's Cortana voice assistant will play a big role on the Xbox, too. You can tell the system to handle certain duties (such as starting a party) at any point, even while you're playing. Microsoft hasn't said just when the new experience arrives beyond "soon," but the tech giant has historically rolled out these bigger Xbox updates late in the year.

By now, if you're an Xbox One gamer, you know that Microsoft has a pretty badass controller on the horizon. But what's truly interesting about the new Elite controller, announced at the company's major E3 press event this week, is that it's the product of several in-home research sessions. According to Xbox Hardware Project Manager David Prien, the company realized that today's gamers are all about "customization and personalization." And so Prien's team enlisted pro-gamers picked from leaderboards on the company's own Xbox titles to help mold this new modular controller design.
But if you thought that the Elite controller was just for gaming's cream of the crop players, you'd be mistaken. Prien assured us that it's "not just for the pro-gamer. The idea here is that everyone can benefit from this." He also said that the hardware team had a "laundry list of over 100 feature sets," though, understandably, not all of that made it into the final design. We had an opportunity to get some close-up time with the new Elite controller here on the showfloor, so be sure to watch our interview with Prien below.

Microsoft is entering the virtual reality conversation with a one-two punch: partnerships with both Oculus and Valve VR. The Oculus Rift will be bundledwith a wireless Xbox One controller, native support on Windows 10 and the ability to play Xbox One games in a virtual cinema via Xbox-to-Windowsstreaming. Valve VR joins the Rift on Windows 10, a partnership that Microsoft announced during its Xbox E3 conference, suggesting a focus on gaming in Valve's virtual worlds. But, Microsoft's VR plans may be bigger than just two other companies, Microsoft General Manager of Games Publishing Shannon Loftis suggested during an interview at E3 this week. Read her thoughts on VR, gaming and Windows 10 below.

The Xbox 360 had a dedicated spot in millions of living rooms, bedrooms and offices for nearly 10 years, and during that time, players purchased massive libraries of games. However, when the Xbox One launched in 2013, it didn't include the ability to play or transfer Xbox 360 games, a disappointment for many fans. That's why Microsoft's announcement at its E3 showcase was so exciting: The Xbox One is getting backward compatibility this holiday, with a lineup of more than 100 fan-requested Xbox 360 games to start and more to be added as demand warrants. Xbox One backward compatibility runs an Xbox 360 emulator right on the console, which is no easy feat, Microsoft General Manager of Games Publishing Shannon Loftis explains during a chat at E3.

The freshly announced 1TB Xbox One will only be available at GAME for a (very) limited time.
The retailer has announced that it has secured UK exclusivity on the new hardware, although the deal only runs until June 20th (next Saturday).
The 1TB machine will cost £349 standalone or as part of a bundle including either The Elder Scrolls Online or Lego Jurassic World. Elsewhere some GAME stores have been promoting a bundle including The Elder Scrolls Online and Ori and the Blind Forest.
GAME has also said it will trim the price to £249 for those trading in either an Xbox 360 or older Xbox One. The machine will be available in-store tomorrow.
Note too that as of today the 500GB Xbox One has an RRP of just £299 in the UK.
“Gamers will have been waiting until E3 for such a big announcement like this, so we’re excited to announce this with Microsoft and bring it to households early,” GAME’s UK retail MD Charlotte Knight said.
“The new 1TB version will give gamers loads more storage and judging by the response we’ve had, demand for this from Microsoft fans is likely to be high.”

Microsoft didn't have just a 1TB Xbox One in store today. The company has alsorevealed that a wireless PC adapter for the Xbox One's controller will be available this fall, both by itself ($25) or bundled with a gamepad ($80). The add-on will give you that familiar, console-like input on any Windows 10 device with a spare USB port, including stereo audio and voice chat. That's a while to wait just to get that Xbox One feel on your computer without plugging in a cable. However, the adapter could make all the difference if you're using a laptop or tablet and want to get rid of as many cords as possible.

It's not E3 yet, but Microsoft has taken the wraps off of this limited edition "Independent Developers Pack" Xbox One, in Australia of all places. Besides packing download tokens for five ID@Xbox (Hand of Fate, Threes!, #IDARB, The Jackbox Party Pack, and Never Alone) and DLC add-ons for two others (Warframe, Smite beta) it also has the new Xbox One controller with integrated headphone jack that we've been expecting. In Australia, the bundle is priced the same as any other Kinectless XB1 pack,at $499AU. There's no word on a launch for the US or anywhere else, but with the big gaming conference just a couple of weeks away, we should hear more soon.
Update: It looks like Microsoft removed the reference to a new controller from its store page, but we have a picture of the listing as it originally appeared after the break. That detail may not have been intended to leak this early, but we'll check to see if there's any other information.

May 16th, 2015, 22:39 Posted By: wraggster
The Xbox One outsold Sony’s PlayStation 4 in the US last month, according to data firm NPD’s monthly games and console report.
As reported by Venture Beat, the American games market was up three per cent year-on-year, rising from $595.7m to $579.5m.
Revenue from hardware sales was down four per cent, with the overall increase in the market coming from software sales – which were up 13 per cent year-on-year. In terms of unit sales, hardware was up 12 per cent.
According to NPD, the decline in hardware sales was due to a 55 per cent dip in sales of the older formats, such as PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.
But it was the Xbox One that was the best-selling hardware of the month, outselling the PlayStation 4.
"As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month," said Xbox VP of marketing Mike Nichols.
"Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent."
Sony also released a statement about its performance last month, reminding consumers of its overall position as market leader: “PlayStation continues to lead software sales for April 2015 and PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader in the U.S.”
And here is the software top ten for April:
1. Mortal Kombat X (Warner Bros)
2. Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
3. Battlefield Hardline (EA)
4. MLB 15: The Show (Sony)
5. Minecraft (Mojang)
6. NBA 2K15 (2K Games)
7. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Activision Blizzard)
8. Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (Bandai Namco)
9. Super Smash Bros (Nintendo)
10. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection (2K Games)

Microsoft's latest preview version of Windows 10 for phones is here and whether you prefer work or play -- or non-Lumia Windows phones -- it has something new to offer. This is the first one ready to test out the new Universal Office apps (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote) that are built to run across PCs, phones and tablets alike. Control them via touch, pen, keyboard -- whatever you have they're ready to do business. This access arrives because build 10080 is also the first with a beta version of the new Windows Store. It's a universal app too (notice a theme here?) with a new look, but there are some known issues and the old Store app is still there in case you need to fall back on it. Microsoft announced that it would bring carrier billing for all with the new app and while that's still on the way, it's not enabled yet.

Right now, most major publishers are chasing the booming indie market and Microsoft is no different with its ID@Xbox programme.
The firm is coming off a busy few months. Earlier this year at GDC it announced that it was planning on having games from the scheme appear on both Xbox consoles and Windows 10 devices. It was also showing off some 22 titles including Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight and Makin Games’ Raging Justice at GDC, Rezzed and PAX East.
“I joined the team [from PlayStation] nearly six months ago to increase our efforts in the European region,” ID@Xbox account manager Agostino Simonetta says. “It feels like we are having a very good moment. This month has been a fantastic time for us and there are some excellent titles on the way. It feels pretty good at the moment, but we are also increasing our efforts.”
The big news that came out of GDC is that ID@Xbox titles will be able to launch on Windows 10 as well as Xbox One.
“ID@Xbox’s aim is to enable devs that want to bring their content to Windows 10 devices. Those range from PC, desktop, laptop, Surface and touch devices. We’ve allowed developers to bring their content over with integration of all the features of Xbox Live. Developers can choose to launch games on both platforms with cross-platform functionality.
“The reception has been fantastic. Developers quickly realised the opportunity that Windows 10 is offering them and there’s an element of trust in the ID@Xbox programme and seeing the success we are already having on the console, so we have plenty of developers coming to us and talking to us about their plans and what they want to do.”
Microsoft hopes that by utilising the strength of its Xbox brand it can reclaim the ground it has lost in the PC space to Steam. Not that Simonetta sees Valve’s PC platform as a rival to Windows 10.
“I admire Steam as a platform, but we don’t see this as a competitor,” he says. “In fact, we announced at GDC that Steam and Steam games will be compatible with Windows 10, so our priority is simply to ensure the best games are available on our platforms.”
"No-one could have predicted
Minecraft. We’re letting indies
express themselves and then
great content will follow." Agostino Simonetta, ID@Xbox
When ID@Xbox was first announced, the programme was criticised for its strict parity clauses for developers. Studios had to launch their games on Xbox One first, or simultaneously with other platforms. However, the company has since pulled back a little on this policy.
“It’s very simple,” Simonetta explains. “If an indie developer needs to ship serially, because they don’t have the resources to ship simultaneously, we totally get that and it’s not a problem.
“But if the game’s not going to be out on Xbox for a significant period of time, whether it’s because the developer signed an exclusivity agreement, or worked on a different project in between, we ask that they add something so the game feels fresh on Xbox.”
And Simonetta and ID@Xbox is continuing its indie outreach, planning events around the world to reach developers
“ID@Xbox will organise events across the globe and we are going to be a lot more visible at industry events as well,” Simonetta explains. “The effort is there. We know that we are doing a great job at the moment, but we also know we need to keep striving to be better.
“We’re enabling developers to come up with amazing ideas that we never predicted. Titles that have been so successful that they could peak Minecraft. Minecraft is not something that could have been predicted or looked for. We should enable developers to express themselves, and then the great content will follow.”

Ever wanted to turn on your Xbox One before you've even reached the living room? If so, it's time to upgrade your console. Microsoft has released the Xbox One's promisedMay update, and you now have the option of turning the system on (or off) from the SmartGlass app -- your system will be ready by the time you sit down to play. The refresh also brings voice messages to the One, and it enables dedicated party chat servers (rolling out over the weeks ahead) to make sure a finicky router won't get in the way of your conversations. It's not a gigantic update, but it's a big deal if you're either impatient or hate typing with a gamepad.
