US phone and internet provider AT&T will release its U-verse streaming television platform for Xbox 360 on Friday.
The IPTV service is the first time American 360 owners can watch broadcast TV via their console, and also offers on-demand programming. Xbox IPTV was at one point due from BT, but plans were scrapped.
The service is not free even for those with existing U-verse subscriptions. New sign-ups require a $99 installation charge on top of a monthly AT&T internet fee, while current U-verse customers are subject to an additional $55 to activate it on 360.
U-verse involves a leased set-top box which can access 130 channels, many of which are HD, and record shows to its hard drive. The Xbox 360 version requires that there be at least one of these receivers in the home already, but is not subject to an additional monthly fee. "AT&T has a legacy of innovation and teamed up with Microsoft to build a differentiated all-IP TV offering to enable the future of TV services for their customers," said Andreas Mueller-Schubert, Microsoft's general manager of the Media Platforms Business.
"We're excited to extend that relationship today through new initiatives that make TV anywhere a possibility, delivering rich entertainment experiences for consumers across multiple screens, inside and outside the home."
AT&T also plans to offer the service on the new Windows Phone 7 later this year.

We just spent some serious, and we mean serious time with Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7. Just like your Xbox, this is sort of an amalgamation of "the place you go to play games" and "the place you go to ping and taunt your friends who also play games." Unfortunately, it seems there's a bit of a disconnect between phone-based scores and records and Xbox achievements -- they all add up to the same gamerscore, but you can't easily pull up your most recent Halo exploits to show off on your mobile, for instance. Luckily, that still puts Microsoft in a better position than any other mobile games platform (until Apple can get Game Center to stop sucking, at least). Being able to message and challenge friends all from the same "hub" where you keep your games is great, and being able to view your avatar and the avatars of friends (you can even play dress-up with your own) is nice gravy on top.
Of course, what really matters is the games, right? Luckily, Microsoft has a pretty strong launch lineup, with some of the regulars like EA's The Sims 3 and Need for Speed, along with some exclusives like Rocket Riot and the hotly anticipated The Harvest. The good news? Games look and play great, just like you might expect from an iPhone or Android level capacitive touchscreen platform, with The Harvest as an obvious and very important standout in complexity and polish. The bad news? Everything takes forever to load (our rough estimate is about three minutes to start playing in The Harvest), and when you don't have any multitasking, that's a really bad thing. Check out some of the Xbox Live hub and capabilities after the break, along with some games, and make up your own mind.

Microsoft has confirmed the new and changed features due to be introduced in its next Xbox 360 operating system update.
Headlining the Fall Update is improved in-game voice chat quality thanks to a new audio codec, as well as a more streamlined Marketplace UI, intended to reduce the number of actions necessary to find and play content.
Also overhauled are the Avatars, changing the user-designed animated characters' proportions in order to make them more suited to use in Kinect titles.
Wireless networking is purportedly improved, more easily offering a list of available connections, while the virtual keyboard has been redesigned, with frequently-used phrases such as logins a priority.
In addition, users can sign out other controllers in-game, intended to de-complicate , for instance, assigning the correct instruments in music games.
US users will also see access to sports channel ESPN 3 and improved Netflix and Zune services for movies and music respectively.
No release date for the new system software has been offered as yet, though Microsoft has already run a closed beta program, and promised to implement further changes based on user feedback.

Well, it looks like AT&T has a few surprises of its own today -- it's just announced that U-verse Mobile will be heading to Windows Phone 7 this fall and -- get this -- you don't even have to be a U-verse customer to use it. Non-customers will have to shell out $9.99 a month to get their mobile TV fix, however, while current U-verse users will be able to take advantage of the service for free -- it's also available nationwide, a first for a U-verse service. In other U-verse news, AT&T has also now confirmed earlier reports that you will be able to use your Xbox 360 as a U-verse receiver, although you'll obviously have to be a U-verse customer for that. New U-verse customers will be able to order a $99 Xbox kit that includes installation (but not the actual Xbox 360) starting October 15th, while existing customers will apparently have to buy the kit and shell out an additional $55 for installation. Head on past the break for the full press release and a quick video of the Windows Phone 7 app.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is reportedly already in development at Spanish developer MercurySteam.
"If you liked the first [game], hope that the second is even more spectacular," Oscar Araujo, composer of the first game's soundtrack, said on Spanish radio (via Eurogamer).
Konami declined to comment on the report, but it looks like the identity of MercurySteam's next game is out of the bag.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow debuted in sixth place on the UK all formats chart this morning following highly positive reviews.

With less than a month to go until Call of Duty: Black Ops is released worldwide on November 9th, Activision has confirmed that brand new trailer will be aired on British TV tomorrow night.
It will be screened in the half time break of the England vs Montenegro European Championship qualifier at Wembley, which is being broadcast on ITV1 and ITV 1 HD. The one-minute trailer will feature never-before-seen in-game footage.
The audience for the ad is expected to exceed seven million viewers.
On Friday US retailer GameStop said that it has received a record number of pre-orders for the game, outstripping those seen with 2009’s record breaker Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
It was also confirmed last week that Black Ops will support 3D visuals for those with a compatible stereoscopic TV set.

Microsoft is purportedly planning to dispense with Massive Inc, an in-game advertising firm it acquired in 2006 for a rumoured $200 – 400 million.
Unnamed Microsoft sources told AdWeek that the unit will be closed before November, with many of Massive's staff being moved to other positions in the parent company.
General manager J.J. Richards is allegedly seeking employment elsewhere, following what is claimed to be several months of unsuccessful attempts by Microsoft to sell the company for a mere six or seven figures.
AdWeek claims the reason for Microsoft's alleged dissatisfaction with Massive is both that in-game ads in general have not reached formerly predicted revenues, and that Xbox Live has proven a more lucrative advertising platform.
In addition, publisher EA had not renewed arrangements with Massive, instead opening its own in-game ads division earlier this year.

October 9th, 2010, 12:38 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has revealed what else the incoming Xbox 360 dashboard update will do, besides adding Zune and Kinect functionality.
The update also brings with it improved voice chat, reproportioned avatars, a redesigned virtual keyboard and a host of other performance tweaks.
We'll hand over to Microsoft for the finer details:
Improved voice quality – the audio codec is being updated to improve Xbox LIVE Party chat audio quality. So grab your friends and jump into a multiplayer game, catch a big sports event, watch a movie or do all three.
Improved experience for changing your Gamertag – choosing a new Gamertag? If the Gamertag you're looking for is already taken, your Avatar will spin a wheel and we will provide five other Gamertag suggestions at a time for you to choose from.
Streamlined in-dashboard virtual keyboard – we've taken the existing QWERTY keyboard in-dash and made it easier to use for scenarios that involve repeated text entry, for example when signing up for Live within the dashboard.
Improved Xbox Live Marketplace UI and browse experience – the Games Marketplace has been re-organized to provide streamlined access to the games and content you want, reducing the number of steps it takes to get to a download.
Avatar changes – we've made your Avatars slightly more proportional so you can better play Kinect games.
Easier to get on a wireless network – trying to connect to a wireless network? With the next update, you'll see a list of all the wireless networks within range when you go into network settings. From there, you'll be able to select a new network or further configure the network you're connected to.
Ability to sign-out other controllers in the sign-in UI – we're adding the ability to sign-out profiles on other controllers in the sign-in UI within the Guide. This is especially useful when playing games like Rock Band.
New browse experience for 100 per cent completed games – you spent a lot of time and effort earning those Achievements, so instead of only being able to view your first dozen completed games, we're giving you a new and better way to browse all of them.
The update goes live on 4th November.

October 9th, 2010, 12:36 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's UK studio Rare originally made prototype button controllers for Kinect, as it struggled with the early concept of peripheral-free motion control.
According to Nick Burton, development director for Kinect at Rare, it wasn't until the first successful game prototypes began drawing a crowd in-house that it dawned on the team that there were multiple ways to interact without holding moulded plastic.
"I remember those first few weeks of us having the tech in November 2008, we were going 'but you've got to have a button!' To the extent that we built little buttons that you could hold in your hands, just to try it," he said in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.
"The acid test turned out to be a couple of prototypes we worked out quickly. We weren't thinking about sports, these were just ideas we were chucking around for three or four days at a time. We had a little goal kick game that was to test accuracy of avatars and it worked well because we could place a virtual ball in front of the player. And at the same time as that, we realised that kicking doesn't involve a button, there doesn't have to be a button press.
"That was the shared moment where we realised we don't need buttons," he added. "At that point it really evolved for us. It turns out there are lot of ways to interact, it's just a case of finding the right way to do it for your product. It was interesting at that time to go from the assumption that we've got to have buttons to the realisation we don't need them."
Although it took a while for the game designers at Microsoft to throw out old conventions, Burton believes gamers will warm to Kinect much quicker, as the launch titles are built around instinctive actions.
"Once you say to somebody, 'that's you on the screen,' they realise it does what you do. If you show them a table tennis table and ball coming to them - even if it's a wireframe - they naturally move to hit it.
"It's in-built life experience. I think we've lowered the barrier because once a user sees himself on the screen having an effect in the world, it clicks. Sports is a no-brainer. You don't have to tell anyone how to play football."

suraj.sun sends this quote from Engadget about U-verse subscribers soon gaining the ability to use an Xbox 360 as a set-top box:
"A so-called Wired Release will roll out to AT&T U-verse customers next Sunday, and it'll bring the long awaited feature with it (though you'll have to wait until November 7th for that particular aspect). This means an AT&T U-verse customer's Xbox 360 will have a Dashboard app, and when launched, it'll let it function exactly like any other U-verse set-top. The only major catch is that it can't be the only set-top — you'll need at least one DVR at another TV in the house to enjoy one of the four HD streams that could be funneled into your home."

Wired has published a lengthy behind-the-scenes feature documenting the inception, development and technological struggles of Microsoft's Project Natal, now known as Kinect. The feature is the result of conversations the magazine had with a number of key developers and researchers behind the project, and unprecedented access to Microsoft Research in a number of countries, over the course of three years.

Gears of War 3 fans will get to try out the recently-delayed third-person shooter for free months before it's released with a multiplayer beta, Epic Games has announced.
It's due to run some time in early 2011, Shacknews reports.
Epic also revealed that Gears of War 3 will use dedicated servers for its ranked and social matchmaking games, which should delight fans of the series and eliminate host advantage complaints.
The Unreal Engine maker had this to say: "In addition to a swath of online code improvements, we're bringing dedicated servers to Gears of War 3 to drive a balanced, optimized, and thrilling online experience for Gearheads everywhere.
Last week Epic and publisher Microsoft delayed the game by at least five months to autumn 2011. Epic said the decision was a business decision between partners, and had nothing to do with the quality of the game. At a recent press event Epic said the delay makes the beta possible.

Analyst Goldman Sachs has downgraded Microsoft share recommendations from 'buy' to 'neutral', and suggested that one way to resolve the firm's apparent difficulties is to split off its consumer entertainment division.
In a new report (as seen by TechFlash), Goldman Sachs claimed that "A break-up of the consumer businesses could potentially unlock hidden value, or more discipline on cost could turn the businesses into contributors to profitability and shareholder value.
"To date the company's comments suggest that management still sees significant value in combining the consumer and enterprise efforts, but we view a foot in both camps as preventing a successful focus on one strategy, a la Oracle in the enterprise or Apple for consumers.
Clarified Goldman's Sarah Friar, "The Xbox products could be an appealing stand-alone entity, given the historical success of the Xbox and the products' brand strength, and the business could show unlocked value with forced cost discipline compared to as a piece of Microsoft."
Goldman blamed an "elongated PC refresh cycle" and the rise of tablet devices for its 4 per cent lowering of Microsoft's earnings estimates.
To address this, the analyst claimed, Microsoft would need to increase dividends in order to lure more investors, to pursue market leadership in cloud technologies and, damningly, "a coherent consumer strategy that could involve paring back investments and/or divesting more peripheral assets such as gaming."
In Goldman's valuation of Microsoft's various divisions, Entertainment & Devices (which includes Xbox) came out the lowest, at $3.6 billion.
By contrast, Windows/Windows Live was pitched as $107 billion, the business division at $99 billion and servers and tools at $43 billion.
Of the Xbox division, the analyst claimed that "Kinect expands the addressable market and could be key to higher profitability" and "Xbox Live [is] one of the largest paid Cloud communities in existence, offering Microsoft a door into the highly sought after consumer living room."
However, "The division is yet to turn profitable, once corporate overhead is allocated."
While Microsoft has yet to respond to Goldman Sach's recommendations, industry figures have been vocal in their disagreement. " Pulling this off would be like Microsoft learning Geller-ian magic tricks, the equivalent of being able to bend spoons with its brain," said investor Paul Kedrosky.
Added analyst Matt Rosoff to ComputerWorld, "I think it's silly to spin off a profitable business. Xbox would lose more than it would gain by going it alone." Rosoff felt that the company would be better off carving its search business, due to the complexities of competing with Google.
Microsoft share price fell by 2 per cent following Goldman Sach's report.

Ubisoft's North American boss Laurent Detoc has claimed that Kinect is comparable in consumer appeal to the iPad.
As such, the French Publisher is aggressively pursuing projects for the Xbox motion controller.
"It's our intent to be the biggest third-party publisher on that machine," Detoc told Gamasutra at a Kinect event in San Francisco.
"I think we are in a good position because we have solid tech; we have a lot of R&D that has generated a lot of prototypes. We're only making like half a dozen games. We could have made like 12. There's a right balance to have."
Confident that Kinect would succeed, he argued that "It's cool. It's a piece of technology. Why do people buy iPads? I have an iPad. My wife has an iPad. Why? You've gotta have it."
In addition, he drew attention to Microsoft's significant spend on researching and promoting Kinect.
He was also unconcerned about Kinect's high RRP. "It's not such a big investment compared to how good it is, and how many units they want to sell at the beginning. Ask me a year for now how I feel about the pricing for Christmas 2011, based on the install base they have."
Detoc also predicted that Kinect (and its successors) would spread onto other hardware devices. "We're going to put 3D cameras in everything... I would be surprised if the TV I buy five years from now doesn't have a 3D camera in it."

Yes we have not forgotten about the CK3-CP. Maybe we have been a little distracted lately with various AVR USB work (however we have certainly been busy with our own actual XECUTER AVR USB work – this is for sure )
Anyway as many of you in the scene who have been talking to us on IRC in the last few weeks will know, that we ripped the CK3-CP design apart and made some major “under the hood” changes to make it as slick and as solid as possible (Credits to many of our Beta testers who really jumped the hell out of this and poked every single design flaw in the ass). This really is a fantastic piece of kit and with there being so many variables with everyone’s computer systems / psu’s we wanted to make sure that it was as spot-on as possible. Anyway after a brief hiatus we rolled out the latest prototype and just for fun – in honor of our friends at Team Jungle including C4E we made this fancy pants Jungle design lol
Many are also asking us about the 360 Slim progress since we posted a video of it booting a while back. Soon kids, soon
……NAND-X v2 AVR Edition with various goodies coming soon
