Transforming supership news now, with the announcement of an October 27 release date for the "Tempest Pack," a new add-on for Xbox Live Arcade's well-received racer, Hydro Thunder Hurricane. According to developer Vector Unit, the 400 MSP ($5) pack will introduce two new boats -- "the super-agile Whiplash and the slip-slidery Psyclone" -- and three more imaginative race tracks.
If you're happy to pay for a trio of route canals, you'll end up hurtling through the Bermuda Triangle, into the lost city of Atlantis and past the boisterous bastions of Castle Von Boom. Those besotted with naval gazing will also welcome new skins for all the original boats, along with six expert-class variants of the lower-end boats, allowing you to compete effectively online with any selection. (Not against us, of course.)

Assassins aren't the type to stand right out in the open and shout, "Hey, look at me! Assassin here!" But that's exactly what Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood seems to be doing, as Ubisoft reports the game is receiving a lot of attention -- it's secured more pre-orders than any other title in the company's history. Of course, that's not exactly surprising, given that the last game in the series did kind of well.
The publisher isn't divulging exact pre-order numbers, but adds that Brotherhood is "one of the biggest marketing investments in Ubisoft's history." (No word on the total marketing budget, either.) What we're most intrigued to know, though, is how exactly Ubisoft has managed to drum up such numbers when pre-order bonuses include one of the most revolting things known to the human species: clowns.

A demo of Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage is available to download from the Xbox Live Marketplace now.
Queue it up here so it's ready for you when you get home.
In June publisher Tecmo Koei told Eurogamer that Fist of the North Star will retain the Japanese voice-overs when is heads west this autumn.
A spokesperson for the company told us fans had been "begging" for this. Fist of the North Star will also be fully voiced in English.
The game spins the Japanese Manga with a Dynasty Warriors twist. You're a hard-as-nails karate bloke with a bare chest and a weird hand. And you'll be punching through droves of enemies and racking up bloody combos galore.
I vaguely remember the original animation. Wasn't there a bit when a skyscraper fell on a bloke's head, and some guy punched some other guy's belly so fast it opened a hole in it?

October 19th, 2010, 15:04 Posted By: wraggster
Reports overnight that retail copies Call of Duty: Black Ops have been stolen from a factory in Alabama appear to have been a load of rubbish, judging by conflicting posts by semi-literate gentlemen on various Xbox 360 hacking forums.
Yesterday Hooked Gamers chronicled events surrounding hacker forum members "Ungodly Leaker" and "97SIRHB". The former supposedly had the game disc in his hands, and was credited with leaking Halo: Reach pre-release, while both he and 97SIRHB apparently conversed with Treyarch community man Josh Olin, who was said to be seeking information on hacker groups and making threats.
However, in a rambly "final statement to all the fans and media and Treyarch" repeated on the Se7ensins forum, Ungodly Leaker said that while he was contacted by somebody claiming to have a copy of the game, it was "never in our hands".
"It did how ever hit the hands of the Runner (the Computer guy) and according to him FBI came and Took It (RIGHT!!) Ha Ha Ha." Ha ha ha indeed. Also sic. "After speaking with Josh [Olin] no FBI are involved at all but he wants tto know were we got the game from.... NO WERE it landed in our laps but we were scammed END OF Story...." Was this guy in Ocean's Eleven?
Activision has yet to comment on all this, and we don't expect it to do so, because everyone concerned appears to be madder than a bag of hammers.
Piracy of Xbox 360 games has been a problem for several years, with most major releases hitting newsgroups and torrents well ahead of release. Halo: Reach is the most prominent recent example, appearing in the wild over three weeks ahead of its release date.
PlayStation 3 is no longer immune to the problem either following the release of PSJailbreak, although publishers including Electronic Arts are already taking steps to reduce the firmware-snubbing device's potency.

Halo: Reach is all set to get a level cap increase, Bungie has announced.
The developer will lift the limit above its current Lt Colonel Grade Three high-point once 117 million daily and weekly million challenges have been completed.
Bungie reckons that should be some time in November.
The post on Bungie.net read, "When you do cross the 117 Million mark, we'll celebrate by blowing the lid off the level cap! In the immediate aftermath, new ranks and armor will be made magically available for you inside The Armory, provided you have the rank and credits required. Time to get to work!"
"Oh, and no, we won't be counting boosted challenges," the post added.
The update also announced that 16,445 years of play had been logged so far, constituting 784 million player-games. In summary, it's quite popular.
Last week Bungie announced that new DLC - the Noble Map Pack - will be out on 30th November.

ethesda has announced that DLC for Fallout: New Vegas will be released exclusively on Xbox Live.
The publisher confirmed it would be developing additional content for the highly-anticipated post-apocalyptic RPG for Xbox 360. The first pack will be available by the end of the year.
The announcement follows on from a similar partnership for Fallout 3, which saw DLC released exclusively on Xbox 360 before later being converted for PS3 and PC.
“We’re excited to continue the partnership between Bethesda and Microsoft, and build on the success of the game add-ons released for Fallout 3 on Xbox Live,” said Bethesda’s VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines.
“Fans will once again be able to continue their experience in the Fallout universe with the add-on packs planned for after the launch of the game.”
Microsoft’s general manager of Interactive Entertainment Business product marketing Matt Barlow added: “We have no doubt that gamers will be thrilled with seeing a new add-on pack extend their adventures with Fallout: New Vegas on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live.”

The New York Post is reporting that Microsoft is spending $500m on what it calls “a major movie-style marketing blitz” to accompany the launch of Kinect next month.
The wide-reaching campaign will touch on all manner of sectors including TV, online, print, food and drink. Partners include Disney, Nickelodeon, Burger King, ABC, Pepsi and Kellogg’s. Kinect will also take over YouTube’s home page upon its US launch on November 4th.
NYP adds that even Hollywood movie mogul Steven Spielberg has been involved in the planning.
Around 7,000 nationwide midnight openings are scheduled for the US market, with big numbers also expected to throw open their doors at midnight in the UK come November 10th.
“Kinect is the largest, most integrated marketing initiative in Xbox history, bigger than [the Xbox 360’s] launch,” general manager of global marketing communications at Xbox Robert Matthews stated.
“We are going to be spending millions to launch this globally.”
And as has been pointed out by many outlets, Microsoft has also pledged to support the launch of the upcoming Windows Phone 7 with a bumper $400m marketing spend.

Larry Hryb has announced the full line up of seventeen US Kinect launch titles on his Major Nelson blog, with an announcement on European games due later today.
The full list features nine sports, dance and fitness titles, a number of minigame compilations and a few traditional games, including Sonic Free Riders and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Fitness games due on release day are Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout, EA Sports Active 2 and Zumba Fitness. Sports games include Kinect Sports, MotionSports and Deca Sports, and the two dancing titles are Dance Central and DanceMasters.
Also available at launch will be first-party releases Kinect Adventures, Kinectimals and Kinect Joy Ride, joined by Game Party: In Motion, Adrenalin Misfits and Fighters Uncaged.
Hryb was also keen to highlight the fact that some retailers have been reporting that pre-order allocations of Kinect have sold out already.
"I am getting reports of many retailers being sold out of their Kinect pre-order allotment, so if you have not placed your order yet you may want to take care of that," Hryb told Major Nelson readers.
Elsewhere, the New York Post is reporting that the marketing budget assigned to Kinect is $500 million, equal to that of the original Xbox.
"Kinect is the largest, most integrated marketing initiative in Xbox history, bigger than its launch," Xbox global marketing communications manager Robert Matthews told the NYP. "We are going to be spending millions to launch this globally."
The article also indicates that Microsoft has founded advertising partnerships with Burger King, Pepsi and Kelloggs and that Kinect will be staging a takeover on YouTube's homepage for the launch.

October 18th, 2010, 15:44 Posted By: wraggster
The Xbox 360's download games service Xbox Live Arcade may have passed its tipping point, one of the platform's most successful developers has said.
According to Foundation 9, the parent company of the developers behind download games OutRun Online Arcade, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Deadliest Warrior: The Game, around 30 per cent of Xbox 360 owners are buying games through XBLA.
"Certainly XBLA is past tipping point now," CEO James North-Hearn told Eurogamer.
"We estimate there are about 16 million game purchasers out there currently. The 360 numbers are somewhere between 40 to 50 million, depending on who you listen to.
"It's pretty healthy. 30 per cent of the hardware base is not only online and using Xbox Live, but it's all those and buying games. It's got to be encouraging for that type of distribution going forward."
Xbox Live is currently a billion dollar business, buoyed by sales of movies, avatar gear and game add-ons.
According to Microsoft about half of XBLA's 25 million users paid an annual fee to play games online in the year ended June 30.
But what of Sony's rival service the PlayStation Network?
"Clearly with PSN the market's not as big and therefore the data is not as established," North-Hearn said.
"Even though it's a smaller user base, and even though it's generally accepted as currently not being as successful or as popular, it's definitely growing. We can see that.
"There's less competition on PSN but currently a smaller user base."
As of June this year, the cumulative number of registered accounts on PlayStation Network had exceeded 50 million worldwide.
North-Hearn should know about XBLA and PSN. Foundation 9 claims responsibility for nearly 15 per cent of the 300 or so games on Xbox Live Arcade. Its top five XBLA games by revenue have generated more than $22 million.
Foundation 9 owns six studios: Backbone Entertainment, Double Helix, Griptonite, ImaginEngine, Pipeworks and Sumo Digital. It reckons it's the world's "largest independent game developer".
Looking to the future, North-Hearn predicted big things for digital downloads, and Microsoft and Sony's platforms.
"We're strong believers that the market will move to both online and to digital distribution at some point, almost exclusively. The unknown is just what the timing of that is.
"PSN and XBLA are both great platforms for that to build upon.
"Connectivity and digital distribution, and dare I say cloud solutions are all where the market's going to go. XBLA and PSN are in a great position."

DanceEvolution for Kinect will be released alongside the motion-sensing add-on on 10th November, Konami's announced.
CROSSBOARD 7, another Konami Kinect game, is also slated for release on 10th November. Hudson Soft's Sports Island Freedom will follow on 25th November.
DanceEvolution asks players to follow on-screen routines. CROSSBOARD 7 "uses the player's movements to steer their on-screen creature who is barrelling down a series of hazard-strewn courses". Boom.
And Sports Island Freedom is a collection of ten sporting events designed for Kinect. There's tennis, boxing, archery, paint ball, beach volleyball, dodge ball, kendo, mogul skiing, snowboard cross and figure skating.

October 18th, 2010, 15:34 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft updated Kinect's software just "a few months ago" to allow players to use the controller-free device while seated.
The platform holder has previously been somewhat evasive about Kinect's ability to detect seated players, and not without good reason, according to comments from Blitz Games Studios co-founder Andrew Oliver.
He told Eurogamer that the device's difficulty in detecting seated and lying players was caused by it setting the base node used to create skeletal models at the bottom of the spine.
Microsoft altered the software so that the base node was switched to the back of the neck quite recently, said Oliver, who's currently working on Kinect titles like movie karaoke game Yoostar2 and personal fitness title The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout.
"A few months ago they changed stuff around," he said. "A lot of developers were like, 'Oh my God! Everything's broken,' because all the nodes were moved. But then it was like, 'Oh, actually, this is more logical.'"
Prior to the update, developers had to create Kinect software internally in order to make a game in which players could sit or lie down.
"It was one of those ones where it was probably borderline whether Microsoft would have fixed it for you or not," Oliver said.
"We were talking to them last February saying, 'Are you ever going to fix the libraries so it will work on the floor?' And they went, 'Oh come on, that's lying on the floor. That's so rare. We've got other issues we're dealing with.' We said, 'Okay, we'll go write it ourselves.'"
With Microsoft;s update to the software, "games going forward won't have a problem," Oliver added.

Geremia has been working on the 360 Slim DVD drive (LiteOn DG16D4S) for some time now and made a lot of progress already. He released his latest version of Tarablinda - a collection of hacks and tricks which he discovered during hw and fw exploration (allows to extract dvdkey and more and since this last version even an experimental way to dump the whole FW). Quote: "I had no time, no will and no more than 2 drive to test, and i'm not willing to support it too much, it's just a proof of concept. It can contain bugs and it's not an idiot proof app. I spent 2 months of spare night-time on this, from decapping to fullrawdump, passing by descrambling fw, reversing fw, bruteforcing, finding usefull cdb commands, bugs and tricks. This is the result, not the beginning of something else. Since it's my hobby, i'm free to do what i like, just enjoy it or hate it, i dont' care Slim liteon is well detectable and also lockable to a permanent read-only SPI flash, it's just a matter of MS to push the red button.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock has sold just 86,000 copies in its first week in the US, across all formats.
The figures, which were obtained by CVG from analyst Cowen & Company, represent a serious decline for the series.
Guitar Hero 5 managed 499,000 sales in its first month in 2009, Guitar Hero: World Tour topped 500,000 in its first week in 2008 and Guitar Hero III managed 1.4 million units in five days the year before.
Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock entered the UK all-formats chart at six when it launched last month. Eurogamer's Johnny Minkley awarded the game a solid 7/10.
Earlier this year, Rock Band developer Harmonix talked down fears that the music genre was in terminal decline. CEO Alex Rigopulos claimed, "I absolutely do not believe that rhythm-action gaming has reached its peak."
Let's see if Rock Band 3 fares any better when it launches for DS, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 on 29th October.

The man with the world's highest Gamerscore has just hit the half million mark.
The Xbox 360 user, Gamertag Stallion83, passed the the landmark with a 20 point Achievement in Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventure: Episode 4.
Stallion83 started his 1 Million Gamerscore blog back in 2006 with the aim of, well, being the first to achieve a Gamerscore of one million.
"Well, I'm finally half way there," he posted earlier. "It's been one hell of a journey so far. Thanks for following me and thanks to everyone that helped me along the way. It's going to be a long process getting to 1,000,000, but hopefully I can make it there someday."
He hasn't got a great deal of competition. His nearest rival is Canadian gamer smrnov, some way back at 459,084.
Kotaku reports that Stallion83 celebrated his achievement not by popping a champagne cork, but with a quick blast on Karaoke Revolution.

Concern over Kinect's ability to detect players sat down on sofas has been eradicated after Microsoft updated the software behind the tech, Eurogamer can reveal.
Kinect's much-discussed difficulty detecting sitting and lying down players was caused by it setting the base node used to create skeletal models at the bottom of the spine.
When players were sat down with their knees raised in front of their pelvis, Kinect encountered problems.
In July Microsoft insisted that Kinect could recognise players who were sitting down, despite a recent developer comment to the contrary.
This evening Eurogamer can reveal how Microsoft has made this possible.
The console manufacturer updated the software used by developers to make sense of the information gathered by the Kinect sensor so that the base node was switched from the bottom of the spine to the back of the neck, according to a developer with more experience working with the technology than most.
"It means that should the bottom of your torso get confused with the sofa, because your bum and your legs are enveloped inside the sofa, it doesn't matter because your hands and arms are still working," Blitz Games Studios co-founder and Chief Technical Officer Andrew Oliver told Eurogamer. "You can do most actions."
"A few months ago they changed stuff around. A lot of developers were like, 'Oh my God! Everything's broken,' because all the nodes were moved.
"But then it was like, 'Oh, actually, this is more logical.'"
While the changes made to Kinect's software libraries have come too late to be used in the motion-sensing add-on's launch line-up, "games going forward won't have a problem," Oliver reassured.
Before the update, developers who wanted to create a game in which players sit or lie down would have had to create the software to do it internally. Blitz was one such developer.
"It was one of those ones where it was probably borderline whether Microsoft would have fixed it for you or not," Oliver revealed.
Blitz has two Kinect-enabled games ready to launch: fitness title The Biggest Loser and karaoke movie game Yoostar 2.
Blitz created its own solution for Kinect to detect players lying on the floor because The Biggest Loser asks players to perform sit-ups and push-ups.
Blitz has "several" Kinect-enabled games in development.

Microsoft's Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live services will be made available for nine new countries from November 10, 2010, offering localised content and support.
Residents of Russia, Poland, South Africa, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Brazil, Colombia, and Chile will all be able to access the services from their home countries, without having to register an account in a foreign country. English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese language options will be available.
Customers with existing accounts registered from elsewhere will be able to migrate territories, keeping all avatar items, Microsoft Points, downloads, DLC and games saves. Existing accounts will have their subscriptions rounded up to the nearest month when they migrate.
Certain services, such as Twitter, Facebook and Zune, are as yet unavailable in the new territories, so any associated content will not function with migrated accounts. All purchased content can be re-downloaded prior to the migration, but once it has taken place only content purchased under the new details will be available to re-download.
No specific pricing has yet been given for the subscription or Microsoft Points in the nine new countries, but Microsoft says that it hopes to "offer consistent pricing for Xbox LIVE around the world".
