Microsoft has defended its decision to increase the cost of its online gaming service Xbox Live Gold.
The firm justified the price hike with mention of exclusive games such as Gears of War and Halo, and the fact that certain DLC packs arrive on Xbox 360 before rival consoles.
It also attributed the monthly membership rise from £4.99 to £5.99 to infrastructure costs.
Craig Davison from Microsoft’s Xbox Live marketing team told Gamasutra: “There are costs associated with maintaining a service at such a level – such as infrastructure costs. And we’re continuing to bring more and more content.
“Now we get those Call of Duty map packs before anybody else does. We’ve got Gears and Halo as exclusives. We continue to get exclusives on the service as well. And we’ve gone from 400,000 members in our first year to 25m.
“We want to continue to bring that content in. We also want to continue to innovate on all dimensions, whether it’s social, entertainment, or gaming.”
In the US annual Xbox Live memberships rose by $10 to $59.99. However annual Xbox Live Gold subscribers in the UK won’t be charged extra.
Users can also opt for Xbox Live Free membership instead, but this does not allow players to take part in online multiplayer gaming.

via Eurogamer
Yesterday's overhaul of the Xbox 360 dashboard has upset a number of independent developers, who claim it makes it even harder for their games to find an audience.
The revamp moves Xbox Live Indie Games out of the games store proper and hides it under a new tab titled Specialty Shops alongside the Avatar Marketplace and Game Room.
Gamasutra reports that developers are taking to the App Hub forum to voice their discontent.
"I'd like to know the rationale behind it - at least then the community could try and come up with constructive alternatives, rather than being pushed further into obscurity," said Deej, developer of Clover: A Curious Tale.
Weapon of Choice studio Mommy's Best Games posted, "I'm hear to mourn Indie Games being known as 'games', which I suppose we must now rename Indie Specialties."
Developer Projector Games added "Steam Heroes was one of the first games to come out after the new dash change and I have to say that our sales have been beyond horrible - which is suprising, as I'd say it's one of the better games I've released on XBLIG."
We've contacted Microsoft to explain the move and will update when it responds.

Fable III developer Lionhead is aware that the game shipped with a number of bugs and is working on patches.
A post on the studio's official website explained, "Of course as with any videogame there are some people with technical issues. That's bound to happen of course with a game the size of Fable, our poor testers worked flat out but if something slips through the nets, then don't panic!"
It wants any gamers who spot glitches to report them via a dedicated web page it has set up. It promises to keep a close on user feedback but won't commit to a timescale for an update.
"If you do experience a corrupt save game and there is no work around," Lionhead added, "then all I can personally recommend you do is start a new game and apologise for any stress this might cause. We really do feel for you if this happens!"
Ah, there goes that warm fuzzy feeling.
The developer also announced it is trying to get the Kingmaker app up and running again. Apparently it fell over last week and won't allow users to log in.
Fable III launched last week and has been selling rather well, going straight into the UK all-formats chart at number one. Eurogamer's Tom Bramwell paid homage to Lionhead's regal effort, stumping up a princely 8/10.

European copies of Dragon Age: Ultimate Edition for the PlayStation 3 were shipped with the wrong content, developer BioWare has admitted.
Although the Return to Ostagar DLC is listed in menus, when you try to boot it up you'll be treated to other content instead. That's not quite what we'd describe as 'Ultimate'.
Worry not - publisher EA has got its customer support team on the job. If you're one of those affected drop them a line and they'll be able to manually add the Ostagar campaign to your EA account.
Dragon Age: Ultimate Edition launched last month, packaging together all seven DLC packs with the original Dragon Age: Origins. Just the thing to get you pumped for the forthcoming sequel.

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...pEiwzrjgim.php
C4E posted some updates about the Xbox360 fall2010 dashboard security on #FW@EFnet. He reports the Update Process itself seems 'safe' atm, however that doesn't mean you can go ahead updating and booting everything you want. AP2.5 games are a problem/unsafe for sure (and we don't know exactly which titles all have or will have AP2.5 active). For the rest nothing is 100% confirmed safe atm.
[c4eva] ap2.5 already defeated, backup fable 3 running fine on beta dash! more data required for analysis!
[**] C4 are you planning on releasing the new LT+ for the old consoles? ie. not slim?
[c4eva] **:yes
[***] c4eva, is it confirmed that current FW and older games will be safe in the new dash?
[c4eva] ***:unknown at present!
[c4eva] dash out?
[c4eva] version please?
[c4eva] so it begins, dash version please?
[****] c4 2.0.12611.0
[c4eva] very good, thx, same version im already working with!
[*****] C4 are you still working on hitas? Will they eventually be released =)?
[c4eva] *****:was working on it , not for a while now!
[*******] c4eva so there will be a LT+ for lite-on and benq drives
[c4eva] yes
[c4eva] ok, have logged the update process, analysing!
[c4eva] logged entire update process, no vendor packets, only standard inquiry and key exchange, so update process safe!
[c4eva] fable 3 not safe! ap2.5 active for that title with new dash!
[c4eva] as soon as we have enough data on ap25 then there will be something
[c4eva] testing more game titles soon for ap25!

Guess who you'll play as in Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombie mode when co-operatively protecting the Pentagon from zombies:
Former US president Richard Nixon? Yes.
Former US president John F. Kennedy? Yes.
Former US secretary of defense Robert McNamara? Yes.
Cuban revolutionary and subsequent state leader Fidel Castro? Yes.
The four political leaders come together under the premise of a hush-hush meeting at the Pentagon. Cigars are smoked and shady looks traded until the sound of gunfire spooks McNamara. Kennedy passes this off as the sound of a storm until crazed monsters overrun the facility.
"Zombies," states Kennedy as a matter of fact. "Gentlemen, at times like these our capacity to retaliate must be and has to be massive to deter all forms of aggression."
The late president thumps the Great Seal of the United States on the wall and a secret room opens before him. Inside are walls filled with weaponry.
"Gentlemen," says Kennedy, "lock and load."

Format-holders are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
Supply enough product for launch, just enough to satisfy day one with some overspill, then you’re branded a so-so hit. Or a borderline failure.
Don’t supply enough product, and you aren’t working hard enough, over-inflating demand, or simply cocked up your manufacturing.
We’ve heard a fair bit of off-the-record grumbling over the last few days about Kinect allocations. Some say a few stores are getting just one unit each, a stark contrast to what’s obviously going on at the likes of GAME and Asda, where November 10th is effectively the launch of a new console.
But I think you can take Microsoft’s recent comments at face value. Bitch and moan all you like about what happens on day one – I’m sure there isn’t as much stock available as Microsoft wanted, and you bet they have looked after preferred retail partners first. They need those people on side for the long-haul.
So no, I don’t think you can accuse the format holder of mishandling this launch. Excitement for Kinect is high and, if the company keeps playing it right, we could be in for a Wii-like boom that we haven’t seen for some time.

Microsoft has claimed that its 25 million Xbox Live users are spending 40 hours a month each using Xbox Live, totalling one billion man hours on the service.
The increase is largely down to an increased range of available services, the publisher said, citing a 157 per cent increase in time spent watching film and television on their machines over the last year.
Non-gaming services available on Xbox Live include Facebook, Zune music and film rentals, Sky Player and online radio service Last.fm.
The surge in non-game related use for consoles reflects an attempt by platform holders to consolidate their machines' purpose as a media device. With the launch of Microsoft's Kinect on Thursday, the service will also begin supporting video chat.
Recently, a survey by UK telecoms ombudsman OFCOM revealed that the average Facebook user spends 13 minutes a day on the site, while also claiming that "Videogames consoles are also emerging as important platforms for delivering video to the television".
According to the survey, ten per cent of all traffic from the BBC's iPlayer service now comes from PS3 and Wii consoles, overtaking the seven per cent which originates from Macs.

Microsoft is in talks with several European independent studios to bring the Project Gotham Racing series back to the Xbox 360, Develop can reveal.
A trusted source told Develop that Microsoft remains undecided on which studio to hand the project to.
Project Gotham became a multi-million-selling series when it was steered by Liverpool-based studio Bizarre Creations, though the developer’s involvement ceased in 2007.
Turn-10 has for a number of months been considered the most likely candidate to develop future Project Gotham titles. The Microsoft-owned studio has, with the help of extensive outsourcing, developed three successful Forza racing games.
Yet Microsoft’s hunt for a studio partner suggests the project will not be brought in-house.
Bizarre Creations was acquired by Activision in 2007 – a deal which saw its IP scatter across the industry. Sega holds IP rights to action-shooter The Club, while EA owns Boom Boom Rocket. Bizarre retains the Geometry Wars rights while Microsoft owns Project Gotham and all its assets.
Project Gotham Racing, the spiritual successor to Metropolis Street Racer, had bolstered the original Xbox’s launch line-up along with fellow blockbuster Halo. The series went from cult-hit status to global fame, and became a key product in Microsoft’s seminal online service, Live.
Shane Kim, the former boss of Microsoft Game Studios, said in 2008 that Project Gotham Racing would return at some stage.
In 2005 Bill Gates described Project Gotham as his favourite video game.
Develop has contacted Microsoft for comment.

With its ability to track the movement of 20 limbs, Kinect is well-suited to Dance Central and its hundreds of dance moves.
In an interview with MCV, Harmonix says embracing Microsoft’s motion accessory rather than PlayStation Move or Wii was an easy choice.
“Kinect was a no-brainer because you don’t have to hold anything close to your body,” the game's project director Kasson Crooker stated.
“If Kinect didn’t work, we would never have made this game. The other motion controllers out there are really cool but they yield different experiences. For us, we’re just totally focused on Kinect.”
Microsoft also provided assistance with development.
Lead designer Dean Tate adds: “Microsoft tested the game with tons of people, and that was absolutely crucial to the development process.”

Microsoft’s latest revamp of the Xbox 360 dashboard is now live and available to download from Xbox Live.
Online-enabled Xbox 360 owners who turn on their machine from this point will be prompted to download the new software, which amongst other things also prepares their machines for the arrival of Kinect in the UK next week.
As well as a brand new look, chief amongst the other additions in a reworking of the codec powering voice chat. This will provide improved audio quality for those chatting with friends while playing games or watching videos.
The in-dashboard virtual keyboard has been streamlined and the Marketplace UI has been re-arranged to expedite access to content. Also altered is the way in which the console signs up to wireless networks.
It will now be easier to sign in and sign out players’ profiles in the Guide menu, and a brand new sub-menu in which players can easily browse all their 100 per cent completed games has also been introduced.
Changing your Gamertag has also been simplified (though it has not been made any cheaper), with the dash offering up alternatives if the new moniker a player seeks has already been taken.
It had previously been revealed that Avatars will also be getting an interesting tweak – they’ll be getting a bit taller, so as to aid compatibility with Kinect titles that use them. In addition the update will add full Kinect support and the Zune music and movie marketplace.

Xbox 360 platform holder Microsoft has admitted that the review scores for some of its Kinect launch titles are unlikely to match the adulation given to the likes of Halo Reach – but that it won’t affect their performance at retail.
“For us, these are different types of titles and experiences than maybe some of the games traditionally that are targeted to the core market,” chief of staff for Microsoft's interactive entertainment business Aaron Greenberg told Eurogamer.
“So the correlation between a review score for Halo: Reach and sales is very high, but Kinect Sports is more about just having fun.
“I don't know how reviewers will grade those games because they're so unique and so different to what the reviewers have played with controllers. We'd love to see great reviews but I don't think you'll see the same type of correlation between reviews and actual sales of the game, would be my guess.”
When asked if he is nervous about the potential critical response, Greenberg responded: “I'm not nervous. I know what the media thinks; we know they love Dance Central, we've heard they think it's the killer app. They're excited about Child of Eden. We've even had a lot of good feedback for Kinectimals from the core.”

HungryBob released Carnage Manager v0.2 - a file manager for homebrew 360s:
[QUOTE]
File system manager for Xbox 360 Homebrew console (XEX executable).
On 360 press BACK button for brief controls help.
Features
* all standard file/directory operations copy/delete/mkdir
* multitasking - can do something while files copying...
* background tasks cancelable
* unpacking of RAR archives - UNRAR library version 3.9.10 ported to 360.
* classic double panel user interface
Limitations
Although i tested it for many bugs, currently i consider it to be beta.
there may be places where operations may go wrong, thus list of what not to do...
* don't try to copy files over themselves, to same directory or child directory, may freeze or crash.
* unpack files only to empty directory, if UNRAR encounters same existing file in target directory, it will freeze forever. this is because unrar will try to ask if need to skip, cancel, replace, etc. existing file using STDIN functions, which are stripped from this UNRAR port. use delete operation to wipe files from target dir first.
* any wide character support from official UNRAR library was stripped down (meaning no unicode support). you will most likely end up with corrupted file names when try to unpack such archives. however, since 360's HDD and DVD filesystems allows only multibyte characters in file names, it should be OK to extract DVD backups or other files archivized from that places.
* usb keyboard not supported (well, only in dashboard popup boxes)
* if eject dvd tray, automatically exits to dashboard

That is very bad news announced by Jester on the forum se7ensins.
Indeed, although it is not a developer in the project freeBOOT, Jester is relatively close to the people composing the project team. Thus they have entrusted the project was finalized and there would be no new version to integrate Microsoft's new dashboard will happen in November.
Still according to Jester, the developers have taken this decision in finding that the main interest of users freeBOOT was hacking and cheating in games. Lack of project and homebrew on the Xbox 360 will be weighed in the balance.
Now that the project is stopped, this does not necessarily mean the end of rebooters on Xbox 360. The project freeBOOT being sufficiently functional, other developers did not see may be no point in embarking on the development of a new reboot ... thing that could now change.
Thank you to helljo for information.

Dashboard, that is. You've already seen the new Xbox 360 dashboard update right here and thousands of you have tried its flatter, faster interface for yourselves, but if you've missed out, it's looking like your Halloween candy bag may include a full-scale rollout. Xbox Live subscribers are getting the above message in their inboxes right now, indicating that November 1st will bring a service update of some sort, after which point "You will notice a change to the layout of the Xbox LIVE Dashboard, a new color scheme, and new fonts being used." That doesn't necessarily sound like a cornucopia of Netflix Search, ESPN, Kinect and Zune Music to us, but it's not like you have a choice -- it's mandatory, and you'll lose all Xbox Live functionality unless you comply. We for one welcome our new gaming software overlords. Unlike some of the competition's updates, these at least add functionality.

Both Gears of War 2 and Blur are celebrating Halloween by offering all gamers extra multiplayer XP this weekend.
XP in all of Gears of War 2's multiplayer modes will rocket to 31 times the standard amount.
There's also a special chainsaw massacre edition of Horde planned. Lancer-only matches will have, "no more chainsaw interrupts to save your enemies (or you!) from certain gory evisceration," according to the game's official website.
Bizarre Creation's racer Blur is also going on a charm offensive, offering PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 users double XP this weekend.
And that's not all. Earlier this week, Rockstar announced that all XP in Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer modes would be doubling up too.
Isn't Halloween meant to be a horrifying, scary time of year? Shouldn't they be cutting XP? One wonders what developers have in in store for us come Christmas.

Silicon Valley motion-sensing technology company Canesta has announced that it is being purchased by Microsoft, with the sale due to be finalized before the end of 2010. Canesta develops 3D sensing hardware not unlike that used in Kinect, which launches next week.
The company also develops software for working with 3D tracking data, which is where we'd most likely see the deal bear fruit in terms of gaming, specifically in the evolution of Kinect's software-driven capabilities. It's also possible that the acquisition -- at least in the short-term -- is a move to head off any potential claims that Microsoft may have infringed on Canesta's patents during the development of Kinect.

Microsoft's Kinect motion controller isn't due to ship until November 4th, but one retailer has jumped the gun, leaving a number of gamers with a bit of a quandary. The un-named distributor has sent what Microsoft describes as 'a very small number' of Kinect systems to lucky buyers who might not consider themselves quite so lucky if they try to use the device and its bundled games. Installing the games will require a firmware upgrade, which is nothing out of the ordinary, but in this case the upgrade hasn't yet been released. Attempting to install the non-existent update seems to fool the console into thinking you are trying to play a pirated game and locks the user out of Microsoft's Xbox Live on-line service
