Microsoft is reported to be busy establishing a paid television service for Xbox 360 that would stream platform-exclusive shows and content.
US chat-show giant Conan O'Brien was approached by Microsoft but turned down the deal because there were too many unknowns.
"The Xbox thing - a lot of the conversations were 'well, it's a show, but it's not a show and there are no breaks, but maybe there are breaks and it's not 60 minutes, it's this' and nobody really knew what it was," Conan O'Brien executive producer Jeff Ross explained, according to Gamasutra.
"So it was really going to be a leap of faith to jump in with these guys and figure something out which we didn't know. Plus there were 100 people who were out of jobs and that didn't bode well for that."
Ross added: "You meet with these guys and they show you all this stuff that they're developing and it's mind blowing.
"I think it's coming and it's big. It's just that we weren't in a position at that point to figure out what it was."
The report mentioned that Microsoft was talking to "several" media companies about getting their telly content on Xbox. Apparently it's "possible" that a streaming service for the Xbox 360 Dashboard could arrive this autumn.
Xbox 360 currently offers Sky Sports and ESPN telly channels - the latter only available for US residents.

leaked EA ad for Battlefield 3 has emerged, giving away details about a planned Limited Edition.
The LE will include a 'Back To Karkland' map pack, which features revamped content from Battlefield 2.
The ad reveals: "This themed expansion pack features four legendary maps from Battlefield 2 boldly re-imagined with frostbite 2 physics, destruction and visuals.
"Completing the package are classic Battlefield 2 weapons and vehicles, unique rewards, new Achievements/Trophies and more."
The ad explains that the map pack will be available for those who pre-order the special edition - but will be available for purchase as DLC at a later date for buyers of the regular game.
EA revealed this week that Battlefield 3 will be released in the autumn, via the first trailer for the game.
Subsequent retail listings leaked a whole load more information about the game, including the fact it will feature battles in Paris, Tehran and New York.

In the land of Call of Duty, the battlelines are clearly drawn: Modern Warfare maker Infinity Ward creates the near future shooters and Black Ops maker Treyarch creates the shooters set in the past.
Could that change in the future?
"It would be pretty fantastic" to create a near-future Call of Duty, Treyarch game design director David Vonderhaar told Machinima.
"I think the answer is 'yes'," Vonderhaar replied when asked whether Treyarch would be up for creating a COD set in the future.
"It would be kind of a unique opportunity but the way this works out is obviously more complicated than, 'Hey, me and Treyarch are going to make a near-future shooter.' It doesn't work out that way in practice.
"It's a tough question to answer. We have not announced any new Call of Duty games at this time but to answer his specific question I think, personally, it would be pretty fantastic to do near-future, you know? Not necessarily far-future.
"For me personally. I'm just talking for myself."
The future of the phenomenally successful Call of Duty series is unknown.
Recent reports suggested the expected Modern Warfare 3 game is a collaboration between three developers: Infinity Ward, the newly formed Sledgehammer Games and Singularity creator Raven Software.

Those flimsy headsets you get with the Xbox 360 might finally be bin food when, later this year, new official high-end headsets arrive.
Microsoft has partnered with peripheral maker Mad Catz, who will release the co-branded headsets during the "2011 holiday shopping season", donning the Xbox logo alongside Mad Catz' Tritton branding.
The range will offer both wired and wireless units, including a high-end set that dons Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, so you can hear Xbox Live's four-letter expletives from all directions.
Darren Richardson, Mad Catz's president and CEO, said: "The headphone category is the fastest growing category in the video game space - and this agreement assists Mad Catz's Tritton brand in furthering its leadership to provide high-quality, innovative headphones that allow gamers and audio enthusiasts alike to enjoy a superior gaming and listening experience."
Yeah, but has it got boost?

EA CEO John Riccitiello said during the company's third quarter conference call last night that the publisher has a "very exciting" unannounced first person shooter in the works.
"... The intention for us at least is to have strong FPS entries each year," Riccitiello said, according to Seeking Alpha. "For quite a long time now, I've been saying that it's our long-term goal to take back the first-person shooter category leadership.
"We made strong progress in calendar '10 over calendar '09," he added. "This year, with the trail end of Battlefield Bad Company 2 still doing well, Medal of Honor doing well, Crysis and Bulletstorm, we're clearly going to make more progress on our goal, and that's before we get to what I think is going to be a very exciting entry later in the year that we're not yet announcing."
One FPS we're very excited about is the new IP former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella are making for EA at their new studio Respawn. That game surely won't be released this year, but a reveal's certainly not out of the question.

As if the rumor of a remade Halo: Combat Evolved in the Halo: Reach engine weren't enough, now we've got a URL registered to Microsoft from back in June of 2010 for "KinectHalo.com." Gaming Reloaded spotted the site's Whois information, which pegs the unambiguous URL as one owned by Halo franchise owner Microsoft. While it's possible that Microsoft is currently hard at work on a Halo-based Kinect title, it's also possible that the publisher is just snapping up several "just in case" URLs before virtual squatters show up.
That said, given the long-term beefing up of positions at 343 Industries (Microsoft's internal Halo studio), it's certain that something is in the works over there. Though Microsoft has yet to announce anything officially, we're hoping this whole "Kinect Halo" thing is little more than a memory if and when it does.

The world of gaming can be a nasty place. The internet seems to highlight the worst bits; full of bickering, flaming and criticism, it's a cruel world. Just ask Treyarch.
I suppose that's what happens when you take a bunch of passionate and opinionated folk and cram them in the same cyberspace together. Of all the Holy realms of geekdom, gaming seems to be the one where the old saying, "You can't please everyone" rings particularly true.
To tell the truth, I expected all out war this past couple of weeks.
We've seen the battle lines in the handheld market form, as both Sony and Nintendo whip their weapons from their holsters and let them glisten in the sunlight for all to see. (I'm talking about 3DS and NGP, by the way. I know how you lot like to make things dirty.)
Except, there's been a kind of joyous harmony at play. The two mighty competitors have stepped into the coliseum... only to be greeted with genuine and enthusiastic applause.
Strangely, there's been little in the way of fan-baiting, mockery or condemnation. We haven't even had any claims of an 'Epic fail' taking place. Whisper it, but it's almost been polite.
Oi! You lot! What's going on!?
We asked a biggie over the weekend: "Sony NGP vs. 3DS: Which will you buy?" It was a fair question, but demanded you pick aside. In all honesty, we awaited the outcome from the safety of the CVG nuclear bunker.
Instead of a verbal mushroom cloud, though, we got the likes of this from altitude2k: "Neither at launch, but definitely the NGP out of the two. Just more to my taste, especially the quality-looking lineup." - a perfectly reasonable, well explained opinion, and representative of the masses.
"3DS. Resident Evil Revelations. Starfox. Paper Mario.Yum yum," said razors edge with absolutely no attempt to bash the NGP at all.
"Prob the NGP. 3DS looks cool but, no not for me," pondered gobbybobby, giving props to both consoles.
"Neither," said The_KFD_Case with not a sniff of a swear. Fair enough.
When we cranked open our lead door, what should we see but a circle of cross-legged gaming fanatics singing 'Kumbayah'. The only flames were toasting confectionery. Brought a tear to the eye, it did.
It seems that rather than forge the next great gulf between gamers, the arrival of the NGP and the 3DS has actually brought us all together.
I guess the reason is simple: You Sony folk might not quite understand those Kirby loving kids, but you have to admit you'd like a peek at that fancy 3D screen. And those pixel-pinching, hardware whores might seem a bit full-on, Ninty nerds, but their line-up is looking pretty special (and you have to envy that second analogue stick...)
In fact, my biggest gaming surprise this month wasn't the sheer amount of tech packed into the NGP. It wasn't even how taken I was with my first eyes-on with the 3DS. It was that both Sony and Nintendo actually managed to come up with the goods.
Both entries into the next generation of portables - so far - have absolutely fulfilled potential and met the hype. The 3DS is no gimmick and the NGP is far more than a half-hearted PSP2.
The 3DS and the NGP are targeting opposite ends of the gaming spectrum, but they meet in the middle to push at least a few buttons in every gamer. It's a nice status quo, one where everyone is able to recognise the opposition but feel completely unthreatened and satisfied with their own choice.
In some miraculous, once in a lifetime achievement, together Sony and Nintendo have managed to please just about everyone. Except The_KFD_Case.
That's why the announcement of a dedicated gaming handheld from Microsoft would probably be the worst decision since Nick Clegg... erm... Well, since Nick Clegg.
While Nintendo would no doubt left to its own devices once again, quietly and successfully occupying its own unique 3D space, Sony would be forced to take up arms in retaliation to Microsoft thrusting any handheld Xbox in its NGP's face.
Slowly the divisions would begin to form once more; the colours would bleed away from neutral as Sony supporters claimed dibs on originality and Xbots shouted about Halo this and Gears that.
Aside from the commotion it would cause, there are serious market reasons for MS to stick with PC and home consoles. The NGP is looking like such a complete machine for the hardcore, filling the portable gap purposefully left by Nintendo so well, I just can't see what Microsoft could offer that would be worth disrupting the balance.
Then there'd be Apple to contend with, who wrapped the app gaming sector up rather neatly a long time ago with the iPod. And we all remember what happened when Microsoft tried to encroach on its fiercest rival in the US with Zune. Flop-tastic.
Microsoft makes a fantastic gaming product already, but there's no room for it around the warmth of this crackling campfire; no call for it in our harmonious handheld gathering of gamers.
Whilst I doubt the green team has much desire to join our peaceful portable party, if the Xbox crew do come snooping around, I vote we just silently stare deeply into the flames until they leave.
For now though... Marshmallow, anyone?

A fresh batch of levels are heading to the Xbox 360 version of maniac platformer Super Meat Boy after Microsoft finally approved a new patch for the game.
As revealed in a Team Meat Tweet, an update which fixes a number of glitches and bugs in the game has finally gone live today, after more than two months of back-and-forth with Microsoft. Consequently, Team Meat pledged, "we can upload new levels soon!"
According to a recent blog post, Team Meat has lined up a number of like-minded sadists from the indie scene to design level packs, including Bit.Trip studio Gaijin Games, Give Up Robot creator Matt Thorson and I Wanna Be The Guy guy Michael "Kayin" O'Reilly.
The always-busy Team Meat also offered an update for PC users waiting on the promised level editor. "Soon, working on it now actually. Should be out in a few weeks... its a HUGE update," outlined a further Tweet.
The vicious, unforgiving Super Meat Boy launched to considerable acclaim late last year – Eurogamer's very own Tom Bramwell wrote 9/10 on its report card.

mikejuk writes with this snippet from I, Programer:
"True 3D realtime holography is not only possible — it makes use of a Kinect as its input device. A team at MIT has recreated the famous 3D Princess Leia scene from the original Star Wars — but as a live video feed! It's a great stunt but don't miss the importance — this is realtime 3D holography and that means you can view it without any glasses or other gadgets and you can move around and see behind objects in the scene. This is more than the flat 3D you get in movies."

Microsoft has announced the results for its fiscal second quarter - the three month period ending December 31, 2010 - with record revenue and EPS on the board.
In total the software giant pulled in $19.95 billion in overall revenue, up $931 million on the same period in 2009, with profits stacking up to $6.63 billion.
Earnings per share was also a record figure, weighing in at 77 cents - with results propelled by higher than expected sales of Kinect, while Windows 7 license number passed the 300 million mark.
The Xbox 360's new motion controller - which sold 8 million units in its first 60 days on sale - helped the corporation's Entertainment & Devices division to grow by 55 per cent year-on-year to post revenues of $3.7 billion and an operating income of $680 million.
Those figures set it as the fourth-biggest division by revenue, behind Business (at $6.032 billion), Windows and Windows Live (at $5.054 billion) and Server and Tools (at $4.390 billion).
"We are enthusiastic about the consumer response to our holiday line-up of products, including the launch of Kinect," said Peter Klein, CFO at Microsoft. "The 8 million units of Kinect sensors sold in just 60 days far exceeded our expectations.
"The pace of business spending, combined with strong consumer demand, led to another quarter of operating margin expansion and solid earnings per share growth."
Other quarter highlights included the launch of Windows Phone 7 and the integration of Bing into Yahoo search in the US and Canada.
