If you want to see the unfettered joy on a loved-one's face that only a Kinect-shaped parcel under the Christmas tree can bring, you'd better get your act together. Microsoft reckons that unless you order one this week it'll be lumps of coal all round come 25th December.
According to TechCrunch, Microsoft exec Don Mattrick told the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco that anyone wanting to buy a Kinect in time for Christmas should place an order "by the end of this week" or risk disappointment.
Mattrick went on to claim that he wasn't just cynically trying to spike sales with his prediction.
Call his bluff if you dare, but don't come crying to us when little Jimmy ruins Christmas lunch with his inconsolable tears of despair.
Microsoft's new motion-sensing hardware has been flying off shelves since its launch earlier this month. It moved a million units in its first 10 days on sale in the US. In the UK, Xbox 360 sales doubled in its first week on sale.

Xbox 360 owners will enjoy the first Fallout: New Vegas DLC exclusively when it launches next month.
Dead Money will be released on 21st December exclusively on Xbox Live for 800 MS Points.
In Dead Money, you're the victim of a raw deal, and must work alongside three other captured wastelanders to recover the legendary treasure of the Sierra Madre Casino.
New terrain, foes and choices will greet the player.
"We're pleased to give fans a chance to expand their experience in Fallout: New Vegas this December with Dead Money," said Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing for Bethesda Softworks.
"The release of Dead Money illustrates our commitment to creating entertaining add-on content for players to enjoy in already massive games like Fallout: New Vegas."
Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas launched last month. Dan Whitehead awarded the post-apocalyptic openworld role-player a stonking 9/10.

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...ulsRsYhUJH.php
Blackaddr released SMC Utility v1.0 on xboxhacker.org:
[QUOTE]
This is a general purpose SMC utility designed to replace the old SMC I/O Config Utility. The program itself is a patching engine, where the patches are written as scripts in the INI file. This will allow any future patches to be released as scripts instead of re-releasing the program itself.
This allows you to build a hacked SMC from your original, unhacked version. Included is an All-In-One patch that provides a uniform exploit code base between several SMC versions, and applies a patch that improves the support for Play'N'Charge cables. It eliminates the 'reboot' problem while shutting down with a controller charging. Optional patches are included that allow you force the console to power down instead of charging if you do not wish to leave the console charging unattended. You can also patch it to restore the original unconditional booting.
An analysis mode allows quick diagnostics of the SMC using the new code base to check the JTAG I/O configuration, bug status, status of other patches, etc.
The readme contains directions for a simple two-step process to build a working SMC from your original.
You can ignore all the advanced modes if using command-line utilities makes you crap your pants.
AIO Known Issues:
- while charging a battery in standby mode, the console will not boot properly using the controller GUIDE button. Pwr/Eject work fine.
- If you insert/remove the hard drive while the console is up and running, it will hang. Press the pwr twice to reboot.
The main advantage of using this program is to regain some Play'N'Charge functionality. This program is for JTAG EXPLOITABLE consoles only.
*EDIT [v1.0a]* Link up dated, the original link used ARGON_DATA in AIO patch, now uses AUD_CLAMP as readme states. *EDIT*
I'll post a Linux binary eventually, but the windows version works fine under WINE.

Sega could be planning to bring a special 'Dreamcast Collection' to PS3 and Xbox 360. Mouth watering, yet?
So suggested a post on US retailer GameStop's website, spotted by internet hawks today before being swiftly removed from the site.
We got a snap of the page though (pictured), on which the retailer pins it for release on February 15, 2011, with a $29.99 price tag.
This comes on the very week Sega has released the second HD Dreamcast remake, Crazy Taxi, onto PSN, joining the previously released Sonic Adventure.
GameStop staff have told CVG that despite the game's removal from the website, it remains listed on the retailer's system for a slightly different release of February 17. We were told, as far they know, it's not a mistake.
Sega's already confirmed that Space Channel 5 Part 2 and Sega Bass Fishing are two more DC titles set for PSN/XBLA release next year, and the Dreamcast Collection, we speculate, could simply be a compilation of the four downloadable titles on a single disc.
We're hoping it's something more though. Much more. We've asked Sega for comment.

Kaos Studios' first-person shooter Homefront will be released on 11th March 2011 in Europe, THQ has announced.
It'll launch in the US on 8th March and on the 10th in Australia, according to the game's official Twitter.
Homefront is being aligned as THQ's big shooter series - its Call of Duty. Set in America's own back yard, the premise works around the "what if?" scenario of North Korea invading the home of the capitalist world.
THQ has a book co-written by the Apocalypse Now screenwriter ready for early next year, and it's so confident in the game that it's confirmed Homefront 2 is already on the cards.

[Oliver Kreylos] is using an Xbox Kinect to render 3D environments from real-time video. In other words, he takes the video feed from the Kinect and runs it through some C++ software he wrote to index the pixels in a 3D space that can be manipulated as it plays back. The image above is the result of the Kinect recording video by looking at [Oliver] from his right side. He’s moved the viewer’s playback perspective to be above and in front of him. Part of his body is missing and there is a black shadow because the camera cannot see these areas from its perspective. This is very similar to the real-time 3D scanning we’ve seen in the past, but the hardware and software combination make this a snap to reproduce. Get the source code from his page linked at the top and don’t miss his demo video after the break.

Cliff Bleszinski has curb-stomped the rumor of Kinect functionality appearing in Gears of War 3. Responding to a report by IGN that suggested motion-control features would emerge in a Gears of War game, the Epic Games developer said on his Twitter: "No Kinect in Gears of War 3."
The IGN piece did leave some wiggle room for itself, noting that it "cannot clarify whether or not this is an all-new Gears of War for Kinect or if it's an existing Gears of War game, retro-fitted for the camera controller." The reveal will apparently be made at the Spike TV Video Games Awards. Master of WORLD EXCLUSIVES, Geoff Keighley, has already started to hype the show's "world premiere announcements," teasing two earlier reveals set for Wednesday.
If Microsoft wants to combine Gears of War with some optional Kinect functionality, it seems like a perfectly reasonable way to get more core gamers interested in the peripheral, which is a little too family friendly with its catalog at the moment. However, if we don't get a Tickle-Me Dominic™ minigame, we'll consider any Kinect/Gears crossover a failure.

Microsoft has hailed the sales performance of the Xbox 360 throughout 2010 in the US, noting that it's become the fastest-growing console in that territory, up 34 per cent year-to-date, with 3.5 million sales.
Hardware sales jumped 30 per cent in October alone - ahead of the launch of Kinect, which appears to have significantly bolstered the console further in the past week - cementing its place as the top-selling living-room console for the fifth month in a row, according to data from NPD.
In addition October saw the Xbox 360 platform account for the four top-selling title SKUs, and six of the top ten overall, with highlights including Fable III (580,000 units) and Halo: Reach (315,000 units).
A statement from the publisher noted that heading into November, with the launches of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Kinect, the console was "poised to drive strong holiday sales and deliver on the biggest year in the history of the Xbox business."

The first downloadable add-on for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II is set on the forest moon of Endor and sees players kill perhaps the cutest aliens ever conceived: the Ewoks.
It's set during the time of classic film The Return of the Jedi, but presents a "what if?" scenario, according to IGN. It's all part of the "infinite universe", see.
The Endor Bonus Mission, as it's called, adds new Achievements and Trophies. "One of the team's favourite is the 'Sith Kicker Achievement' but I'll let you figure that one out for yourselves," executive producer Gio Corsi said.
It's of comparable length to the add-ons from the first game, such as the Hoth Bonus Mission. Starkiller will have the same abilities as he did in TFUII, so he's incredibly powerful from the start – but the DLC assumes players picked the Dark Side ending. Boo hiss etc.
The Endor Bonus Mission will be released "later this year". No price was mentioned.
The Force Unleashed II launched last month. John Teti awarded it 5/10 for Eurogamer. C-3PO plays it in the Currys/PC World telly advert.

If PDP's official Kinect TV mount is a bit too pricey for you, Instructables user Riffraff67 has designed a sort of shelf for the Kinect that uses about $10 worth of materials and about 15 minutes' worth of labor.
It might look, well, insane, consisting of a metal plate (in the example, a "handicap" sign), a bit of PVC pipe, and Velcro, but it appears to fulfill its function of putting a flat surface on the top of your TV. Besides, nobody'd be able to tell you had instituted such an unorthodox solution unless they peeked behind the TV, and then they'd probably just be impressed by the combination of thrift and cleverness it suggests.
