So, there's already an open source driver for the Kinect -- who needs to learn how to reverse engineer USB all over again? Well, ladyada of Adafruit Industries, the folks responsible for the Kinect hack bounty and the USB logs used by the bounty winner to get a jump on his hack, has published a detailed guide on exactly how she sniffed the Kinect's USB chatter. The guide isn't for the faint of heart, but it's not completely unintelligible to someone with a bit of time and determination. If anything it serves as an excellent bit of how-the-Kinect-was-won history. We're not expecting Microsoft to reconsider its "Microsoft does not condone the modification of its products" stance on this issue, or its petty threat of law enforcement "to keep Kinect tamper-resistant," but we do hope they've learned one thing by now: they're fighting a losing battle.

November 16th, 2010, 14:57 Posted By: wraggster
The studio behind a controversial Iraq war game still hopes to bring the project to market despite it already having caused a vehement public backlash and a cancelled publishing deal.
Six Days in Fallujah, developed by US independent Atomic Games, was according to the studio an attempt to engage in serious subject matter through the medium of video games. Its subject matter was the Second Battle of Fallujah, a conflict that took place in Iraq six years ago and saw the deaths of numerous US Marines, Iraqi insurgents, and local civilians.
The announcement of the project sparked outcry for apparently trying to stir controversy at the expense of serving armed forces.
Konami dropped its publishing deal, and Atomic Games had to shed staff.
Yet the developer’s president, Peter Tamte, still believes Six Days in Fallujah can restore its image, and describes the code as an “opportunity for the world to experience the true stories”.
In an interview with news site VG247, Tamte appeared to still be at odds with popular opinion that the game is of poor taste.
He brought the issue into a wider debate of whether videogames can be seen as credibile and legitimate forms of story-telling – a discussion which he believes Six Days would have added to.
He asked if games were “just high-tech toymakers, or media companies capable of producing content that is as relevant as movies, music and television?”
Of the project, Tamte said the studio “needs the funding to complete it.”
“I really hope it’s not finished,” he added.
The battle at Fallujah resulted in extensive damage to residences, mosques, city services, and businesses.
Tamte made clear his view that censoring the title would impact on its legitimacy.
“Six Days takes place during the most relevant event of an entire generation,” he said.
“Some people suggested, ‘Why not just make it Six Days in Bullcrapistan?’ We could have done that, but that would have taken away one of the reasons why we made the game, which was to recreate the specific stories of some people who are our heroes – I can’t do that in Bullcrapistan because it loses its context.”
He added: “My frustration with [the situation] has grown over time, if that’s even possible. The retail sales of videogames in the US have declines in the last two years.
“That may be partly because of the economy, but it’s also because the games industry has stopped creating anything new, and consumers are starting to say, ‘Hey, what you’re selling – I’m not buying.’ I have conversations with senior people at publishers all across the world, and they’re telling me that videogames are trivial, and we’re going to keep making trivial games. Someone needs to slap them on the side of the head and say, ‘Hey, guys, sales are going down. Something is wrong.’
“We should experiment with new categories of games. That’s what we wanted to do [with Six Days]. It has to be made into a purely commercial argument, ignoring all the arguments about the importance of the medium, and the things that we can do for consumers that can’t be done via passive forms of entertainment – because most of the publishers are interesting in the economic argument.”
Elsewhere in the interview with VG247, Tamte lifts the lid on the studio’s upcoming self-published and download-only multiplayer shooter, Breach.

November 16th, 2010, 14:41 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's Dennis Durkin voiced an interesting idea at an investment summit last week -- the idea that the company's Kinect camera might pass data to advertisers about the way you look, play and speak. "We can cater what content gets presented to you based on who you are," he told investors, suggesting that the Kinect offered business opportunities that weren't possible "in a controller-based world."
And over time that will help us be more targeted about what content choices we present, what advertising we present, how we get better feedback. And data about how many people are in a room when an advertisement is shown, how many people are in a room when a game is being played, how are those people engaged with the game? How are they engaged with a sporting event? Are they standing up? Are they excited? Are they wearing Seahawks jerseys?
Needless to say, sharing this level of photographic detail with advertisers presents some major privacy concerns -- though it's nothing we haven't heard before -- but moreover it's explicitly against the privacy policy Microsoft presents Kinect users. "Third party partners use aggregated data to deliver Kinect experiences (games or applications), to understand how customers use their Kinect experiences, and to improve performance or even to help plan new experiences," the Kinect Privacy and Online Safety FAQ reads, but also "They are not permitted to use the information for marketing purposes such as selling you games or services, or for personalizing advertising" (bolding ours).
In an email to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft flatly denied that the Kinect would do anything of the sort, whether via third-party partners or otherwise. "Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE do not use any information captured by Kinect for advertising targeting purposes," representatives wrote. Honestly, some of us at Engadget still think targeted advertising is kind of neat, but we know how seriously you take this stuff.

Now that Microsoft's real motivations for building the Kinect are crystal clear, it's impossible not to find a sinister tone in Microsoft's latest press release: a proud proclamation of one million Kinects sold worldwide in 10 days. Microsoft says it's on pace to sell a previously projected five million sensors by year's end, but reading in between the lines we're positive they're implying some sort of nefarious partnership with the TSA to ruin your holiday travel plans. You heard it here first, folks. On the Kinect vs. Move front, comparisons are a little difficult because Sony's numbers (around 3 million worldwide as of last month) were of "shipped" units, not "sold." We'll see who the real winner is after the holidays are over and the dust settles, but for now we wish all three motion-sensing consoles the best of luck. You know, except for the two we don't own because they suck.

November 15th, 2010, 23:45 Posted By: wraggster
A consortium of independent developers have banded together to jointly promote their upcoming Xbox Live titles.
With indie games' profile on the service subject to some scrutiny over the past week, 14 small studios have launched the Indie Games Winter Uprising, seeking to raise profile of what they claim are superior titles.
"If you thought that the XBox Live Indie Games service was just filled with massage apps, clones, and garbage, think again," claimed organiser Robert Boyd of Zeboyd Games.
"We are fighting back against mediocrity and lameness in the best way we know how - by releasing amazing games." The titles constitute a mix of established and new indie developers.
Explained MagicalTimeBean's Ian Stocker, the idea came about "when we were first displaced on the dashboard and sales were in the gutter.
"I asked [Boyd] if he wanted to release Cthulhu at the same time that I released Soulcaster II, so we could do some cross promotion. Even though the games are different genres, they target the same demographic so if we can get someone to visit the channel for one, maybe she'll buy the other as well?
"Robert was into the idea and thought we should take it to the next level. If we coordinate two releases, why not coordinate 12? More traffic = more sales = more revenue for Microsoft = increased likelihood of promoting Indie Games on the dashboard. That's the theory at least."
The initiative will see all 14 games launched during the first week of December, priced from 80 to 400 MS points.

Kinect won't spy on you and gather data to tailor advertising with - despite Microsoft bragging of exactly this feature last week.
"Xbox 360 and Xbox Live do not use any information captured by Kinect for advertising targeting purposes," Microsoft assured the Wall Street Journal.
"Microsoft has a strong track record of implementing some of the best privacy protection measures in the industry.
"We place great importance on the privacy of our customers' information and the safety of their experiences."
That's a dramatic U-turn on what Xbox chief financial officer Dennis Durkin said last week.
With Kinect, Microsoft can be "more targeted about what content choices we present," he told a BMO Capital Markets crowd (reported by Digital Trends).
He used these examples: "What advertising we present; how to get better feedback and data; about how many people are in a room when an advertisement is shown; how many people are in a room when a game is being played."
Kinect, Durkin said, could watch you watching a sports game and be able to determine what team you support because of the clothes - replica kit - you wore.
It's not a million miles away from how Facebook targets its advertising.

Tesco has slashed £15 off the price of the 4GB Kinect Xbox 360 bundle - becoming the first supermarket to defy Microsoft's Suggested Retail Price as eyes turn to Christmas.
The deal is available in store, and compares favourably to the retailer's major online rivals.
Amazon is selling the 4GB bundle for £249.99, whilst the pack is available on Play.com's marketplace for £276.
The bundle includes an Xbox 360 with 4GB Flash Memory, Kinect and Kinect Adventures.
Tesco is advertising its deal in national newspapers and on terrestrial TV stations.
However, there's no guarantee the supermarket will be flush with stock. Early signs suggest that Kinect may be a sell-out by the time December rolls around.
Kinect Sports, Microsoft's flagship solus release for the device, grabbed the No.4 spot in this morning's official UK All Formats chart.

Treyarch, which has for a long time been seen as the underdog to Call of Duty series’ creator Infinity Ward, does not get the credit it deserves for the role it has played in the series according to Activision boss Bobby Kotick.
When a Joystiq interviewer referred to Treyarch as Call of Duty’s ‘b-team’, Kotick was quick to address the staement.
“That's an unfair view of Treyarch,” the exec explained. “You know it's not really an objective view. Treyarch contributed so significantly to the multiplayer technology that's in Modern Warfare 2 and they didn't really get the credit for that.”
Of course, Kotick has a vested interest in bigging up Treyarch right now. Its latest game, Call of Duty: Black Ops, has just smashed UK sales records. And with Infinity Ward’s current role in the series still up in the air, Treyarch has never been more important to the publisher.
But what of Infinity Ward? Though we’re still waiting to learn when the studio will return to the series, Activision clearly still has big plans for the developer.
“There's at least 60 or 70 super-talented, amazingly capable people who are there,” Kotick added. “They shouldn't have to suffer for the bad actions of a couple of guys. They have a great culture, they're really good independent thinkers – incredible technology base.”

Professionial Activision, umm, guy Dan "One of Swords" Amrich has posted nine interesting secrets from Call of Duty: Black Ops' multiplayer map Nuketown. Sure, everybody probably noticed the double rainbow all the way across the sky (what does it mean?), but did you notice the names on the mailboxes, or the fact that the town clock and population board actually count the actual time left and players present in the match? There's also a few secret RC-XD hidey holes (seen above), and apparently Nuketown isn't the only map with a few secret places to send your buzzing remote controlled car of doom.
Say what you want about Activision's evil empire or the money-making steamroller that Call of Duty has become, but no one can say Treyarch didn't pack the stuffing out of this game with hidden content.

I somehow missed this in our last roundup of OpenZDK apps, but it's so cool it's worthy of its own post. Zune HD hacker extraoidinaire Netrix released an update to his Liberate program which frees the device from its pretty but restrictive user interface. The Liberate program gives you access to the Windows CE operating system under the covers, with full access to explorer (ie your data) and executable apps like Opera Mini. The latest version adds support for an on-screen keyboard and right-clicking (two taps), but the really cool stuff is the familiar interface for editing files and adding software. Anyone with a Zune HD tried this out yet?

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...kFuTpyTfMm.php
cOz released a new version of Dash Launch, now compatible with the 12611 dashboard in which JTAG-able 360s can now reboot into with fbBuild 0.1 (freeBOOT v0.04):
[QUOTE]
* At time of this writing, this is ONLY compatible with "freeBOOT" 12611 read info_launch.ini for info on options and setting launch parameters.
* This a core rewrite, major changes were done to the paths used in the ini file, the installer can update these for you if you have the old ini files accessible at the time of install. See the inlcuded sample ini files.
* The installer is now much more robust, and can even flash the appropriate patches to your console for you, all that is required is that you have installed freeboot 12611
Overview - what it does
- It will launch a XeX or CON file from the path you specified in launch.ini as long as it's valid
- Depending on the button you hold when the xbox is trying to load the NXE, it will divert to the xex/con tied to that button or return to default as defined in launch.ini
- Depending which button is held when closing miniblade in NXE (use Y button to close, release then hold a QL button) it will quick launch a CON or XEX from your ini file
- allows one to patch kernel/xam at bootup with a freeBOOT patch style bin file from usb or hdd (in that order) must be in root of the device and be named "kxam.patch" and be no larger than 0x4000 bytes. Again, kxam.patch binary format is the same as a compiled freeboot patch bin, but uses real virtual addresses rather than offsets - see 1.0 release for a windows patch builder
- with the included patch set, launch.xex acts as a helper to detect when xbox1 emulator loads, allowing memory unlock patch and xbox1 emulator to function together
What's new/fixed:
* updated for 12611

fbBuild 0.1 has been released, which will allow to creata a freeBOOT-style NAND image and reboot JTAG-able 360s into the new 12611/Kinect dashboard!
[QUOTE]
Introduction:
Sad to hear the rumor of ikari stepping down, and even sadder to hear of the profiteers taking advantage of this... we bring you a tribute to ikari. If you paid for this, get a refund!
fbBuild is a NAND image builder made to suit freeBoot style images, the included patches and freeboot.bin core are based on the original works done by ikari.
It is suitable to build rebooter images for all current JTAG exploit compatible xbox 360's. As with ibuild produced images, this version only requires a single flash 16MiB in size or larger.
What's New:
- based on targeting kernel 2.0.12611.0
- patches from freeBoot kernel/hv are ported to 12611
- supports both flash tool and ibuild extracted kv/smc_config
- supports injecting Mobile*.dat
- previously revoked usb devices should now work
- kinect works (apply system update for avatars and kinect) it is strongly recommended that r6t3 be removed
- entirely new image builder (no extraction)
- rebuilt/cleaned core can now boot xell on slot to eject dvd drives (see bin directory for alternate)
- exploit payload simplified
Current Limitations:
- security files besides KV must be provided in encrypted form
- STAY THE HELL OFF LIVE! Nuff said, we're not you're mum.
