In yet another Xbox Live Arcade deal, Microsoft is now offering a free batch of 400 MS Points for purchasing two qualifying XBLA games. Don't run off downloading games just yet though, because you'll need to head over to the Xbox Live Events page and download the Arcade Offer gamer picture to register for the giveaway first (the direct link to the gamer picture is currently broken, but it's the first one listed on the events page).
Once that's done, snag two of the games listed after the break (including favorites like Limbo, Lara Croft, Monday Night Combat, Super Meat Boy and more). Within four weeks, the free points will be added to registered Live accounts automatically or sent as redemption code via email. If you're planning to pick up any of the eligible games, you might as well get some free points too, right? The promotion ends December 20, so get to it.

It seems that Microsoft may be in talks with media companies to license TV shows and movies for a new streaming service. With the addition of ESPN to the Xbox 360 over Xbox Live, Microsoft may be in a position to do the same for different content providers and charge a subscription fee for them separately. The idea is to better personalize content and only pay for what you want to watch instead of paying cable companies for all the channels you don't watch. Microsoft is looking into duplicating what they have done with ESPN to include channels such as Showtime or HBO and possibly Disney.

Microsoft is to see a Rewards program for its Xbox Live service, which doles out complimentary MS Points whenever users make certain purchases or actions.
The program, which launches later today, will for instance offer 200 points when a 12 month Xbox Live subscription is bought, 100 for activating Live's Sky service or 20 to "take a quick survey each month." The amount earned for Marketplace purchases "varies."
"Cool prizes" are also promised for participating in various future promotions.
Most of the rewards are limited to Gold members, although some are available to Free users in order to encourage purchases.

Microsoft has responded to the exciting rumour that it is set to release a high definition remake of Xbox classic Halo: Combat Evolved with a statement that will do nothing to quell current speculation.
"Right now our focus is on supporting Halo: Reach," a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer this morning. "We have nothing to announce at this time."
Yesterday Games Master magazine cited "industry chatter" as suggesting the Halo remake is being built using the Reach engine at internal studio 343 Industries.
The game will release ahead of the late 2012 launch of a full Halo 3 sequel – presumably Halo 4, speculated the magazine.
The Halo 1 remake, then, could release on the original game's tenth anniversary in November 2011.
While this latest rumour contradicts public comments made by high-ranking Microsoft executive Phil Spencer, UK Xbox boss Stephen McGill added fuel to the Halo remake fire last month when he told Eurogamer, "I imagine it's a good idea. I think some people want to go back to older games and see them revisited and I think a lot of developers want to see that too."
Watch this space, Halo fans.

A Southern California man is set to go before a jury here Tuesday on criminal charges of violating copyright law by modifying Xbox 360 consoles to play pirated games.
In the first trial of its kind, defendant Matthew Crippen is charged with two counts of violating the anti-circumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA. He faces a maximum three years in prison if convicted.
In pre-trial hearings, Crippen hoped to be able to introduce a defense of "Fair Use," the same defense used for iPhone jailbreaking. The judge at one point said he would allow that defense, saying, "Because fair use is a mixed question of law and fact, it is a permissible question for the jury."
But last week, District Judge Philip Gutierrez backtracked on that, saying Fair Use is not a valid defense on the specific DMCA charge in the case.
Two other key evidentiary issues in the case are unresolved, and are expected to be ruled upon at any time.
One issue is the admissibility of a covert video recording of Crippen allegedly performing the modification. A second is whether the jury can hear the testimony of hardware-hacking guru Andrew “Bunnie” Huang, who is prepared to testify for the defense that the modification did not circumvent a copy-control mechanism within the meaning of the DMCA.

At first blush, using Kinect to control Minecraft might seem like a great idea. This latest Kinect hack, created by YouTube user leparlon, allows players to look and walk in Minecraft. It certainly looks neat, but we can already think of a problem: We're really not looking forward to using our hands to chop down trees for hours at a time. Just think about it: You're using physical motions to control a game solely about manual labor. Maybe leparlon's next Kinect project will hack in a few turbo buttons.

Some unsettling news now for fans of convenience: That Xbox Live Games on Demand title you just bought may not work with its retail counterpart. Specifically, CrunchGear reports that the On Demand version of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is incompatible with the retail version. When attempting to play a cooperative session over Xbox Live, the game returned an error asking that players insert the Rainbow Six Vegas 2 disc. This error occurred regardless of who hosted the match.
A call made to customer support later revealed that this is apparently a problem with several older titles. Additionally, users on the LEGO Rock Band forum report that the On Demand version of the title doesn't allow songs to be exported to other versions of Rock Band. This is understandable given that On Demand games have no manual (and thus no export code), though Harmonix notes it is "looking into" the issue.
The moral of the story, as noted by Co-Optimus: If you're planning to pick up an XBL On Demand title in order to play online with someone that has the retail version, do some research first.

Seven patent filings by Sony last year appear to corroborate reports that its next-generation PSP will feature touch-sensitive panel on its underside.
One patent suggests that the front-mounted display precisely reflects actions on the rear panel, overcoming the traditional touchscreen problem that "the user's fingers often obscure the part that is to be selected."
Microsoft also appears to be patenting variations on touchscreen controls, in this case using ultraviolet light to create a "topography changing layer" which provides varying tactile feedback - such as "serving as a virtual button."

Remember when Oliver Kreylos impressed and shocked us by showing that a single Microsoft Kinect could create some remarkably stout 3D video? He's back at it again, this time blowing minds and demonstrating that two Kinects can be paired and their output meshed -- one basically filling in the gaps of the other. He found that the two do create some interference, the dotted IR pattern of one causing some holes and blotches in the other, but when the two are combined they basically help each other out and the results are quite impressive. As you can see in the video after the break, Oliver is able to rotate the camera perspective and basically film himself from a new camera angle that exists somewhere in between the position of the two Kinects, and do-so in real-time. Sure, the quality leaves a lot to be desired, but still. Wow.

Microsoft is hoping to launch a new subscription-based online TV service through devices like Xbox 360.
That's according to Reuters sources, who claim that the platform holder is engaged in talks with media firms about licensing TV networks.
While its plans aren't set in stone, MS is reportedly keen to create a "virtual cable operator" that delivers content over the internet for a monthly fee.
It's also said to be exploring the possibility of selling more individual channels like HBO or Showtime directly via Xbox 360. In the US, Microsoft already offers ESPN online through the console.
The sources suggested any new service might not arrive for another year.

November 29th, 2010, 22:54 Posted By: wraggster
Sony software engineer Anton Mikhailov has revealed why the PlayStation firm called off its research into motion camera controllers and instead turned to Move.
"We felt the cost of the camera outweighed the advantages of what it offered," the Move co-creator told GamesIndustry.biz sister site Eurogamer.
"When you make the games what [we] found was while it was more robust it didn't fundamentally enable new kinds of games. The games themselves still played like EyeToy games."
"So you lose these subtle and quick controls. You get a magical experience... You can move and something happens. But you lose that sense of connectedness to the game. You get a ton of latency."
The engineer claimed to remain surprised by the Xbox accessory's creation. I don't know why they did Kinect. It seems very un-Microsoft of them to be honest." He was also concerned the camera's cost was higher than it perhaps should be.
"In our research we certainly thought the sensor could sell for cheaper, but at the same time, when you're dealing with those companies, they're not always honest with you up front. They might say the cost is X and X, and then they say, 'We've got to put this extra chip in there,' and by the end the cost is triple or double."
Mikhailov claimed that for Sony to look at 3D cameras again, cost, refresh rate ("30Hz is awful") and resolution would have to improve. The latter, he felt, was a particular issue. "The 3D cameras we surveyed and what Kinect ended up using, they're 320x240 resolution.
"So when you're talking about tracking fingers, or even tracking things like the rotations of your hand, you're working with 10x10 pixels. It's very hard to get anything useful out of it."
He claimed that the more well-received Kinect games, such as Dance Central, were quietly using silhouette instead of skeletal tracking in order to compensate for the camera's limitations. "Skeleton-tracking is the hard thing. That's the neat thing about Kinect, but it's actually the hardest part."
The Sony man was bullish in maintaining that Move was a better solution for game-control, and that the best was yet to come. "We can certainly update it through firmware. The hardware specs we ended up with are good enough that we can get some more improvements out of them.
"The character control and animations are going to improve vastly because most games of this era were set up to do DualShock control. Everything was baked and scripted."
He also claimed that sometime PC gamers were finding that Move offered a superior experience for shooters than a gamepad.

CLK Rebellion released a new beta of the open-source Party Buffalo Drive Explorer that will allow you to access Xbox360 formatted drives/usb-sticks/bins:
[QUOTE]
Here's 1.0.0.5. Still no writing support for the standalone exe, but you can download the source and compile that with the "IsBeta" bool in the main form set to false (be careful, that form is very messy!)
Changelog (v1.0.0.5):
-Fixed a bug with a reading function that liked to read more bytes than it should
-Made it so that it should request administrator permissions at startup (should fix some people's issues...)
-Added the reading of general STFS info, as you can see from this screenshot: http://imgur.com/neMr6.png
-Added a "properties" window for files
-Other small bug fixes that I can't remember
Changelog (v1.0.0.6):
* Fix Bug when clicking the DATA folder
Buffer = io.ReadBytes(0x2050);
That's lovely... I have no idea why I chose a number like like that...
I also messed up on a rounding function, and instead of putting 0x200 I put 200. Pushing out 1.0.0.6 right now.
* Oh yeah, 1.0.0.6 has a minor edit to how it detects USB Drives. I forgot the function that returns a list of logical drives, so I did a char array and had it loop through each, detecting if the drive "IsReady", and if it wasn't then it would throw it away. Hopefully this works better...

Trancy of modcontrol.com released a new version of NAND Flasher 360:
[QUOTE]
What is the NAND Flasher 360 for Windows?
The NAND Flasher 360 is a NAND -flash program for MS Windows. With this program you can update to a new version of freeboot within minutes over USB. With a 16 MB NAND this takes about 8min, Including three extractions steps and one for writing. the Data gets verified for each extraction and writing step. 256/512 MB NANDs take round about 16mins (approx. 128 KB/s). Bad blocks automatically get moved to the appropriate positions (Bad block management). This works for the small as well as the larger NANDs (16/256/512MB).
The program also extracts the KV and Config data from the current NAND and writes it to the freeboot.bin file.
The function "write only valid data" speeds up the writing process. Empty blocks (0xFF) are no longer handled when this function is selected! This results in a 64MB large NAND file being overwritten almost as fast as a 16MB file.
Information on the hardware and NAND is also displayed.
What's new/fixed:
* New BBM method, fixed rarely Bad Block
* Open Source
* Small Bugs fixed
* Erase Bug fixed
* Added option to delete entire flash (Data Partition)
* New BBM Option: Search Bad-Blocks in original Nand Image
* Added work on file instead on Nand (emulation NAND)

Microsoft and Sony are manufacturing shortages of their Kinect and Move add-ons to ignite consumer demand, according to retail analyst Michael Pachter.
The Wedbush Morgan motormouth told IncGamers, "Yes, I think both companies would very much like for consumers to believe that their devices are highly sought after and difficult to obtain. That usually works to spur demand.
"Sony shipped 2.5 million units in the U.S. and Europe, and their sales are nowhere near that level, so I'm not sure how they can reconcile the fact that units shipped far exceed units sold.
"I do think that Microsoft is managing supply a bit better," he added, "and keeping standalone Kinect supply tight to make sure that there is a steady supply through Christmas. They have shipped a lot of console bundles, to ensure that the eBay price doesn't get above $300 for the standalone unit, but supply of the standalone remains tight.
"Sony are trying the same strategy as Microsoft with Kinect, making sure that there are plenty of bundles, but controlling supply of the standalone controllers."
Earlier this month both Microsoft and Sony claimed that their peripherals would be in short supply over the Christmas period following stellar launches.

Kinect had what most people would call a successful launch, moving over one million units worldwide during its first week on store shelves; however, the device wasn't met with quite as warm a reception in Japan. According to Media Create, Microsoft's new all-seeing eye had a "quiet start" in the region, moving just 26,000 units during its launch weekend of November 20 -- that includes both standalone and 360-bundled Kinects.
Also troubling is that no Kinect games made it onto Media Create's Top 20 software sales chart. The highest-selling launch title was DanceMasters, which managed to sell 6,000 copies. On the other hand, four PlayStation Move launch titles made it onto the Top 20 during the controller's launch week, with a combined total of 50,000 copies sold. There's a lot of factors at play, here -- the data coming from a two-day period, the lower install base for the 360, and so on -- but Microsoft's going to have to make a concerted effort if it wants to get the peripheral off the ground in Japan.

Hacking the Xbox 360 Kinect is all about baby steps on the way to what could ultimately amount to some pretty useful homebrew. Here's a good example cooked up by some kids at the MIT Media Lab Fluid Interfaces Group attempting to redefine the human-machine interactive experience. DepthJS is a system that makes Javascript talk to Microsoft's Kinect in order to navigate web pages, among other things. Remember, it's not that making wild, arm-waving gestures is the best way to navigate a web site, it's just a demonstration that you can. Let's hope that the hacking communinity picks up the work and evolves it into a multitouch remote control plugin for our home theater PCs. Boxee, maybe you can lend a hand?
Update: If you're willing to step outside of the developer-friendly borders of open-source software then you'll want to check out Evoluce's gesture solution based on the company's Multitouch Input Management (MIM) driver for Kinect. The most impressive part is its support for simultaneous multitouch and multiuser control of applications (including those using Flash and Java) running on a Windows 7 PC. Evoluce promises to release sofware "soon" to bridge Kinect and Windows 7. Until then be sure to check both of the impressive videos after the break.

The party begins tomorrow, Friday 26th November, according to VideoGamer.com.
Xbox Live will also share Zune music over the weekend, including the latest promo from N.E.R.D.
Tracks from the trendy Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Far East Movement are available, too. No Wagner, though. Shame.
How to get your free on? Find the Free Live Weekend page in Spotlight on your Xbox 360. There's more info on the official Xbox website. Boom.

XorLoser released a new version of XexTool:
[QUOTE]
I have been meaning to update this site for a while, and also to release updates for XexTool and the Xex Loader for IDA. So over the weekend I finally got around to doing so.
For those who don’t know, XexTool is a windows command line tool that gives info on every aspect of an Xbox360 xex file. It also extracts the file that the xex is based on (usually an exe file) and has the ability to alter most of the various flags and parameters set inside an xex file.
What's new/fixed:
* finally fixed the patching ability where the target file is smaller than the source file. hopefully it is fixed properly
* fixed handling of bitfields in version structs (only affected big endian systems)
+ added support for natal/kinect related flags
+ added support for xex date restrictions
+ added support for xex console id restrictions
+ added support for xex device id restrictions
+ added support for xex keyvault privileges restrictions
+ added support for extra debug memory entry
+ added support for a few new xex flags and system partitions
The IDA loader for XEX files enables you to directly load an xex file into the IDA disassembler in order to look at what the internal code is doing. This is extremely useful for developers and reversers. If you don’t know what IDA is or what this loader does, then this tool isn’t for you.

With the release of C4E's iXtreme LT+ for LiteOn and BenQ drives with 'anti'-AP2.5 the guys over at abgx360 also released a new version of their software.
What's new/fixed:
* AntiPiracy 2.5 (AP25) replay sector for iXtreme LT+ firmware is checked for when a game has the AP25 system flag in the Xex set or when its media ID matches a list updatable through abgx360.dat (Fable III is the only game so far that uses AP25 but does not have the AP25 system flag set)
* AP25 replay data is Verified/AutoFixed according to your settings, albeit separately from the normal INI based Verify/AutoFix, so make sure to read the entire abgx360 output
* Video padding size changed to support the new AP25 replay sector using a variable which is updatable through abgx360.dat in case additional stealth sectors are needed so that the video padding check will not blank them out
* Removed short explanations of ISO filesizes (unnecessary, hard to keep updated and misleading in terms of SplitVid; just because an ISO has the space for SplitVid doesn't mean it has valid SplitVid data in that space)
* gzip compression is now supported when abgx360 downloads certain files
* miscellaneous small changes
* Note: The GUI has not been changed and will still display version 1.0.2, don't worry about it as long as the CLI app displays v1.0.4
