Released in the UK Today for PC and Xbox 360
Gray Matter is the first adventure game by renowned author Jane Jensen since the release of Gabriel Knight 3: the story mixes eerie goings-on with supernatural events in best Jensen-style. Neurobiologist Dr. David Styles is one of the game’s central characters: since losing his wife in a horrible accident some several years ago, he has become a recluse, seldom leaving Dread Hill House, his English country estate.
When student and part-time street performer Samantha Everett shows up at his doorstep, she unexpectedly becomes his assistant. Hailing from America, she has been travelling through most of Europe the last couple years. Her first task: finding six test subjects at Oxford University for one of Styles’ experiments. The experiment starts off innocently enough, but then inexplicable incidents start mounting. And Styles is visited by his dear departed wife. Now it’s up to Sam and Dr. Styles to solve the mysteries of Dread Hill House.
In Gray Matter, players control both Dr. David Styles as well as Samantha Everett in their bid to uncover the secrets and find out the truth. Gray Matter tackles questions concerning the nature of reality and the power of the human mind in constructing the world we take for granted.

Imagine typing the name of a game wrong on your CV! That's what renowned stuntman Declan Mulvey claimed happened when he seemed to inadvertently leak the existence of Grand Theft Auto V.
It was "a typo", he told CVG - it should have read Grand Theft Auto IV.
Mulvey is prolific in the videogame world and has worked with Rockstar before, most recently on detective game L.A. Noire and MIA project Max Payne 3. Curiously, however, his IMDB profile makes no mention of Grand Theft Auto IV. Why would such a high profile game be left off the list?
Coinciding with Mulvey's "typo" was the discovery of five Rockstar-registered web domains revolving around spoof slogans like those used to market GTAIV.
The are CashForDeadDreams, SixFigureTemps, StopPayingYourMortgage, HammersteinFausta and LifeInvader, according to fan spotter GrandTheft5.
Rumour has it that Hollywood and not Albert Square will be the setting for Grand Theft Auto V.

A new form of Xbox 360 avatar has been demonstrated by Microsoft, which attempts to simulate the look and mannerisms of players much more closely than the current cartoon style Avatars.
Shown for the first time in a video on the USA Today website, the technology uses a detailed model of the user's face and is able to accurately lip synch from a typed script - with the final product intended to interpret spoken words.
Although the existing Avatars have already been redesigned once for Kinect, to incorporate more realistic body proportions, the new style of avatar is intended as a fully accurate "synthetic model".
Microsoft chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie suggests that the new technology could be used in the Avatar Kinect videoconferencing tool, even though it is currently designed for the original Avatar designs.
Other new technologies mentioned by Mundie include a British project to create detailed 3D images of a user's room and occupants. Mundie insists that researchers are being encouraged to think of Kinect as, "a primary motion- and voice-activated controller for the computerised home of the not-too-distant future".
"Natural interaction with computers is most important going forward," he comments. "Kinect demonstrates that it's possible - and appealing."

Rory Cellan-Jones's avatar interviews Microsoft executive Reena Kawal's avatar
If you spent $9bn a year on research and development and employed 900 of the world's top computer scientists to come up with new ideas, what would you expect in return?
More than a new way of playing video games, a cynic might say.
But Microsoft - a company that may well spend more on R&D than any other business - believes its strategy is paying off, and the proof is the XBox Kinect system.
Pick your avatar
On a visit to the company's headquarters, I had a chance to see some of the projects that Microsoft scientists at its laboratories in Redmond, in Beijing and in Cambridge, England, believe will change the way we see computers.
And the striking thing about what Microsoft's research chief Craig Mundie picked to show off to a group of technology journalists was that almost all of them involved Kinect.
The system which turns a player's body into a games controller was developed with the help of seven different research groups at the company's three main labs, some working on voice recognition, others on motion sensors and a range of other technologies.
Now they are looking at what Kinect could do next.
We saw a system which would allow two people to see different images on the same screen, their eyes tracked by the Kinect camera.
Other scientists showed off ways that the camera could capture objects and people in 3D, which might have applications in future telepresence systems.
And there was plenty of work on avatars, for use in either games or in video-conferencing. Two Chinese researchers demonstrated a photo-realistic talking head - type in some text and he'll say anything you want, blinking and moving almost like a real person.
Craig Mundie says the success of Kinect, which racked up 8m sales in its first 60 days, is proof that the sheer scale of Microsoft's R&D strategy is paying off.
"Microsoft is at a point where many of the things that we've been researching for twenty years are starting to add up and produce solutions," he says. "You can't rely on two guys in a garage to make all the changes, some of these things require a huge amount of technology and a lot of scale."

From team-xecuter.com:
After a long wait we have finally been able to create AP2.5 patches for Non-English titles – in this case we have started with Italian.
Our first test is COD: Black Ops so if you can report back to the #fw channel to confirm its success then we will continue with the rest of the titles.
It was also made sure that ABGX had the correct SSV2 information, and as soon as the patches are confirmed then the AP2.5 data will be uploaded to the database also – this will be done with each and every Non-English title.
More details on team-xecuter.com.
We understand it has taken a long time to start getting Non-English title patches ready, but it’s a very complex process that is insanely time consuming and not to mention, quite expensive.
We also had to evolve to a different AP2.5 challenge capture process which also delayed things by several weeks, but thanks to C4E we have figured out all of the problems and are back on track again.
Please be patient with the time scale of these releases. Some may have thought that we had forgotten about our European friends and that there may have been animosity towards the English side of the scene as they took preference (and in turn some animosity toward Xecuter which we hope to correct today). This couldn’t be further from the truth, in fact there are several members of our team who are Non-English. We have Italian, German, French, Spanish….even Scottish comes to mind
Of course many of you may wonder why there is no public method so you can simply do this yourself. Well, for starters the method is not simple, it involves many processes it isn’t just a case of popping in a disc and ripping – those days are long gone I’m afraid. We have had many discussions with C4E about this and the fact is, if this method was public it would be blocked permanently and that would be the end of AP25 patches for everyone – possibly forever. So as inconvenient as this is, it’s the only way to keep the process safe. If there is ever a method that can be released to the public which does not compromise the process then OF COURSE it will be released. Trust me when we say that we are busy in many areas of our work and daily that takes much higher priorities than having to chase down a dozen different languages of game from around the world and have people flaming and bitching at you all the time thinking that you are holding something back on purpose.
Another point we would like to address while we have your attention, is that there are still persistent, and silly rumors that C4E is holding back the release of the Slim FW so that our X360USB PRO can be released first. We have responded to this MANY times on the forums but let us make one thing very clear and on the record. C4E is NOT holding back the release of the Slim FW for Xecuter or for anyone. It is a very, very difficult and time consuming hack and he has been working on it solid for the last 6 months. The guy has a job, he has a life, just let him do his thing. It IS and WILL be released, but even we don’t know when, and we are on the same team.
Another dumb rumor is that the Slim FW is being locked and made exclusive to the X360USB PRO. We have even seen so-called smart people suggest this. Well if our 10 year track record in the Xbox scene has shown anything – it’s that we have ALWAYS given masses to the scene with regards to Bios’ and Hacks and various methods for free and without any exclusivity. Yes we design products that are hardware add-ons and that is a business and yes there are those that don’t like that and that’s fine. However, we’ve been at the core of the Xbox scene since day #1 and we didn’t change our principles back then and we’re not going to change them now. Don’t listen to silly rumors, or bullshit flaming or lies spread by childish fanboys. There is no deal to lock ANYTHING to the X360USB PRO. To be honest it doesn’t need any deal like that, it’s fantastic on its own, which quite a large amount of you will find out for yourselves next week, we know you are anxious !
Anyway, we hope that clears everything up. Don’t forget to leave test reports in the #fw channel and we can then get a bunch of other titles ready in the next day or so.

In search for feedback on its momentous decision to dump Symbian in favor of Windows Phone, Nokia has put up the above poll on its Conversations website canvassing opinions about what users anticipate most out of the new deal. There's no consensus choice, with the equivocation of reactions being underlined by the fact that the "Other" option was the modal response, however of the given categories, a UI refresh and Xbox-related gaming boons turned out to be most important. No surprises there, Symbian's touchscreen UI shortcomings are well known about while the Xbox tie-up has been one of Microsoft's big selling points for Windows Phone 7 since its start. We'd just ask Nokia to be quick about delivering on these things -- spending too long in anticipation mode won't be good for our health.

February 26th, 2011, 02:28 Posted By: wraggster
The FPS genre needs more developers willing to take risks and break new ground, so says Homefront developer Kaos Studios.
Speaking in an interview with CVG, lead level designer Rex Dickson explained that gamers don't need any more Modern Warfare or Halo look-alikes.
"As a game designer and someone who plays games I really want some people to start pushing boundaries," he said. "Kaos could have made another modern combat game in the Middle East, or an armoured fighter in space versus aliens but does the market really need any more of that?
Dickson went on to explain that if big publishers weren't willing to take these risks, responsibility falls on smaller teams to step up.
"If you want to break the mould of what everyone else is doing there is going to be a certain amount of risk involved. Maybe that's not okay for people like Bungie, Microsoft and Sony but for us, the little guy - and THQ as the third publisher - we have to take these risks and break out.
"If the big guys aren't going to take the risks they're going to just keep making the same game over and over with each iteration then it's up to the little guys to make these games and try and break the mould."
"There's no fear really," he added, addressing the pressure of launching a new IP. "I think I'd be more afraid if we making another Halo game or another desert combat game. The fact that we're offering something unique and different removes the fear, that's what we should be doing."
Homefront, which sees you defending America from an invading Korean army, launches on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 18th March.

February 26th, 2011, 02:20 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie wants to show you the hauntingbridge his team has built over the uncanny valley. Employing Kinect hardware and custom PC software, the research team at Microsoft has created an unnervingly realistic new avatar that can handle text-to-speech when combined with a script and can recognize the words in any order.
"This is a way to create a synthetic model of people that will be acceptable to them when they would look at them on a television or in an Avatar Kinect kind of scenario," Mundie toldUSA Today in a video interview. "There's no reason that we couldn't do that in real time by feeding the information that we get from a Kinect sensor, including its audio input and its 3D modeling, spacial representation, and couple that to the body and the gesture recognition in order to create a full body avatar, that has photo realistic features and full facial animation," he added.
This impressive (if not somewhat terrifying) demo is still very much in the prototype phase, however, and Mundie said it would be "some time before we see it show up in products." We're just hoping those first "products" aren't T-1000s.

February 26th, 2011, 00:30 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has pumped out a press release trumpeting a "blockbuster line-up" for this spring and beyond.
Are these the big-ticket Xbox 360 exclusives we've been waiting to hear about?
No. The only non-downloadable Xbox 360 exclusive is Gears of War 3, which is due 20th September with a beta mid-April.
It's on Xbox Live Arcade where Microsoft claims the most exclusives: gory platform game The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile; action-RPG Torchlight and downloadable Kinect games The Gunstringer and Once Upon a Master.
The former is a Wild West played out by marionette puppets while the latter is a Sesame Street-themed adventure by Tim Schafer's Double Fine.
Does DLC count as a platform exclusive? If it does, notch Halo: Reach Defiant Map Pack and Fable III Traitor's Keep up, too.
As for multiplatform games, Microsoft named many: Crysis 2, Homefront, Batman: Arkham City and Shift 2: Unleashed. Promising downloadable games Child of Eden and Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime were picked out, too.
The remainder is the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood add-on the Da Vinci Disappearance.
Exclusive- Gears of War 3 - 20th September
- Halo: Reach Defiant Map Pack (DLC) - 15th March, 800 Microsoft Points
- Fable III Traitor's Keep (DLC) - 1st March, 560 Microsoft Points
- The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile (XBLA) - 2011
- Torchlight (XBLA) - 9th March, 1200 Microsoft Points
- The Gunstringer (Kinect XBLA) - 2011
- Once Upon a Monster (Kinect XBLA) - autumn
Multi-platform- Crysis 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) - 25th March
- Beyond Good & Evil HD (PSN, XBLA) - 2nd March, 800 Microsoft Points
- Homefront (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) - 18th March
- Child of Eden (XBLA, PSN) - "later this year"
- Batman: Arkham City (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) - autumn
- Shift 2: Unleashed (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) - 1st April
- Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - The Da Vinci Disappearance (PSN, XBL) (DLC) - 2011
- Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) - March

Team17 brought Alien Breed back to life as a downloadable series in 2009. Two years and two games later, the Alien Breed trilogy is being boxed for shops as a complete series on Xbox 360.
The Alien Breed Trilogy will be released on 18th March.
There's no word whether this will be a budget release, but it will need to be to compete with the combined 2400 MSP (£20.56) price of all three games on Xbox Live Arcade.
Alien Breed was reinvented as a pretty isometric co-op shooter for download on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
All three of those new Alien Breed games - Evolution, Assault, Descent - earned 7/10 on Eurogamer
Incidentally, each of those Alien Breed games can be trialled for free on Xbox Live Arcade.

Microsoft is treating its phone platform like a console, planning a release "event" for its Xbox Live games on Windows Phone 7. This spring, Microsoft's mobile platform will get six weeks of "Must Have Games," including Plants vs. Zombies, Hydro Thunder, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, Doodle Jump and more. The press release reiterates that the games, like all Xbox Live games on the platform, include Achievements and leaderboards.
The platform will also be the exclusive home to Fable Coin Golf. Available in March, Coin Golf will let you transfer gold earned in the game to either the PC or console versions ofFable 3. Connecting the console and mobile game will also unlock "three exclusive weapons that can be used in the Traitor's Keep game add-on."
The announcement coincides with the expansion of the Windows Phone platform to another carrier in the US. Sprint's HTC Arrive is the first WP7 device for the carrier, and will be available in March.

The latest Windows Phone 7 update has failed on one in ten handsets, Microsoft has admitted, with subsequent serious system failures reported in some devices.
An update on the Windows Phone blog insisted that many of the failed installs are due to users having a poor internet connection or insufficient storage space.
However, it seems there is a genuine issue with some Samsung devices which, according to a BBCreport, has resulted in devices crashing or being permanently bricked.
"We've identified a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process that impacts a small number of Samsung phones," explained Microsoft's Michael Stroh. "We're working to correct the problem as quickly as possible."
Stroh added that Microsoft has "briefly suspended" updates to Samsung handsets until the issue is sorted out.
"Has the update process gone perfectly? No - but few large-scale software updates ever do, and the engineering team here was prepared," he said.
"Of course, when it's your phone that's having a problem - or you're the one waiting - it's still aggravating. That's why we're committed to learning from our first update and improving the process. We know we have work to do, and we won't be satisfied until you are."
If you're one of those affected, don't worry - you're not missing out on much.
"This first update for Windows Phone is designed to improve the software update process itself," Stroh explained. "So while it might not sound exciting, it's still important because it's paving the way for all future goodie-filled updates to your phone, such as copy and paste or improved Marketplace search."

Microsoft's slowed the pace of Windows Phone 7 ads after saturating the airwaves at launch, but it looks like another campaign is about to begin -- WinRumors has a leak of a new set of "Real Time Challenge" interactive web ads that challenge you to complete tasks using your phone against a WP7 device. Challenges include taking a photo and posting it to Facebook, checking Xbox achievements, getting directions, and telling meeting participants you're running late. Not surprisingly, the WP7 device performs handily at everything -- although we're definitely wondering why you'd be checking Xbox achievements in a hurry while on the run. WinRumors also says that the "Your Phone" image is just a placeholder that will be filled in by other devices in the final ads, so we'll see how MS decides to portray other platforms and their apps -- there's a lot of ways to do some of these things on Android and iOS devices. (And, sigh, we would note that "Update system software without fatal errors" is not a listed activity.) In any event, it's a clever ad idea -- check the video below.
