In taking what some see as the brave decision to help the long overdue Duke Nukem Forever come to market, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has stated that he feels committed to realise the vision that 3D Realms was unable itself to complete.
When asked by Eurogamer if Duke Nukem Forever mirrors his own vision for the title, Pitchford responded: "No, it's not my game. My commitment is to make sure that I and you and we all finally get to play the game we've been waiting for all this time. So the commitment that I've made with my studio is to make sure 3D Realms' vision is realised.
"I was at 3D Realms at the very beginning of the project, so the influence that persisted from that point forward is very high level – the top-line story of how Duke is enjoying the rewards of his successes, and some time has passed since he saved the world, and it's this world that the aliens come back into, and he once again has to rise and be the one."
Later in the interview, Pitchford seemingly becomes quite irritated when Eurogamer suggests that the title's visuals reflect the game's long development cycle.
"That's incorrect. That's actually incorrect," Pitchford interjects. "The game pushes the system to its absolute maximum. The thing we're struggling with now is actually performance and memory constraints.
"If you play a game that doesn't have anything and it's just a shell focused on the scene, yeah you can get higher fidelity, but when you want to put in more simulation, more things to do in the environment, you have to trade off those resources somewhat.
"If this exact game had come out earlier in the cycle, when everyone else hadn't picked their angles and maximised the hardware, there'd be nothing that looked as good. The game absolutely looks better than the first generation Xbox 360 and PS3 games. In this world, today, there are games that look worse than it and there's games that look better than it."

February 23rd, 2011, 10:53 Posted By: wraggster
Hundreds of widely eulogised Kinect hacks will “inevitably” have an influence on mainstream game development, a leading studio head has said.
Blitz Game Studios design director John Nash told Develop that the so-called ‘Kinect hacks’ – manipulations of Microsoft’s sophisticated motion controller usually undertaken by hobbyists and academics – has wowed the development community.
“I think the Kinect hack community has leapt on this for the same reason we’ve been singing the device’s virtues for the last 18 months,” he said in a new Develop feature on Kinect manipulation, published today.
“It’s the flexibility, the innovation, the potential for doing genuinely new and creative things with it. The fact that the device itself is software driven has obviously helped that process but some of the hacks we’ve seen have amazed us all,” he added.
Microsoft has officially declined to comment on Kinect hacks, in contrast to the wishes of some senior figures at the company, who are keen to discuss the homebrew phenomenon.
The platform holder has however today confirmed its Kinect for Windows Software Development Kit will be released this spring, free of charge for non-commercial uses. That in itself appears to be an indication that Microsoft wants to encourage innovation and lateral thinking for its new controller.
A commercial version of the Kinect Windows SDK will arrive at a later date, Microsoft said.
Kinect hacks have been demonstrated in their hundreds across the internet. Home-made manipulations of the hardware include a sign-language reader, a virtual invisibility suit and, perhaps as a more practical example for developers to ape, an FPS control system.
But the manipulation of Kinect hacks stretches beyond that of hobbyists and bedroom coders. Patrick Bouffard, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley's Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences department, has adapted Kinect to provide the eyes for a quadrotor helicopter, which has captured the attention of the world’s media.
Develop has hand-picked five standout Kinect hacks in a new feature, published today.
Nash insisted that a studio like Blitz would ignore such inventions from gamers and enthusiasts “at our peril”.
“It’s easier than it’s been for decades for those at the grass roots level to get their hands dirty and create fun content for their favourite hardware, and we’ve always tried to listen to and engage with that indie community,” he added.
“It’s much easier for them to break down gameplay conventions, and although we have other considerations or restrictions to contend with when we develop big-budget commercial games, I think it’s inevitable that we’ll see the mainstream influenced by some of this work.”
Josh Blake, the founder of the OpenKinect ‘open source community’, reckons the Kinect hack scene has already influenced professional game developers.
“Figuring out how to make these interactions work is a very hard problem. If you look at the first wave of Kinect games, there are couple aspects of the menus and interactions that don't work well and a couple that work really well,” he said.
“I'm sure that mainstream game designers who are working on the next wave of Kinect games have been watching the community closely and have already incorporated some new ideas into their games.”

Microsoft took the lid off of its curious face-tracking Xbox 360 communication service Avatar Kinect this week.
The tech, which was first revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show last month, lets gamers control their Xbox Live Avatars using Kinect and their face.
Kinect translates facial movements, such as smiles and raised eyebrows, into Avatar animations.
Avatar Kinect will launch this spring free of charge to Xbox Live Gold members.
Website Techflash was at Microsoft's headquarters for n Avatar Kinect demo, and published a video on the internet.
15 different stages are available for users to pick from and use Avatar Kinect, ranging from kids themed stages to broadcast and performance stages. Avatar Kinect lets you join sessions and chat with others to create shows that can later be uploaded and shared with others.

Scribblenauts studio 5th Cell believes digital platforms XBLA and PSN make more sense for a developer of its size than attempting to move to full console development.
"We want to start small but we want smart growth," creative director Jeremiah Slaczka toldGamesIndustry.biz in an interview published today. "We're not hiring bodies and biting off more than we can chew. DS to XBLA makes sense as a next step. Whereas DS to Xbox 360 might be possible, it's maybe going to be a hard road. "
The studio is currently working on XBLA action-shooter Hybrid, which it has scaled up to 65 staff for as the bar for XBLA is so much higher than it used to be four years ago. We're seeing a lot of people go to XBLA with games that look like console games.
Although "When you break the math down we make far more money on Hybrid on XBLA that we would on a retail game," 5th Cell is conscious of the risks involved.
"I think there's opportunities but you've got to be careful about riding a whole company on it. Especially as experimentation, you can have just a few people on it. Hybrid's 30-40 people and even DS games are 30 people.
"Whereas with iPhone you can screw around, iterate, try different things. You're not making tons of money and bank-rolling the whole company but you can still make decent money."
For the full interview with Slaczka and 5th Cell's general manager Joseph Tringali, in which they also discuss being a third-party success on Nintendo platforms, why they won't lay off staff come the end of a project and their resistance to publishing deals, please click here.

Buzz! maker Relentless Software is no longer shackled to PlayStation, and there's one piece of technology that has particularly caught its eye: Kinect.
"Of course I'd consider any game for Kinect. And the reason is because Kinect is amazing," Relentless co-founder and executive director Andrew Eades told Eurogamer.
"It's the exact right technology for now. It's given our sector a new lease of life. We'd be mad to not look into Kinect and what we can do.
"The Kinect audience that Microsoft is going after is exactly the audience that we've spoken about forever. Since we started we've said we make games for everyone and that's exactly what Kinect is about, making gaming available to anybody.
"The removal of the controller is a stroke of genius," he added. "People can actually have a go because they don't feel intimidated by this weird DualShock controller or the Xbox controller."
That's the reason Relentless developed the original Buzz controller for PlayStation 2 six years ago.
Eades wouldn't confirm or deny if Relentless was making a game for Kinect nor whether he'd talked to Microsoft.
If Relentless did develop a game for Kinect, a Buzz! game would be off the menu - Sony owns that IP. But what about family murder mystery game Blue Toad Murder Files, could that potentially be a Kinect game?
"Yeah in theory it could be, of course," answered Eades. "It would be really suitable for that.
"There's a lot of hurdles in practice, but why not? I mean I'd love to do it. I'd love to do it multi-platform but I think you'd have to get PlayStation and Xbox to agree with each other on that."
When asked about PlayStation Move, Eades sees one stumbling block: sales. Kinect, remember, raced out of the traps with eight million sales in 60 days.
Sony's been less forthcoming with Move figures; the last we heard was in November 2010, whenMove had shipped 4.1 million units around the world.
"My only issue with Move is if it's got enough numbers out there - whether it's sold through to enough people to make it a platform that we could aim at," said Eades.
"The difference with Kinect is that it's big enough from its first holiday, and growing, that you can take a punt on it - and my conversations with publishers are confirming that decision.
"But we're still not sure if Move is big enough yet for us. I hope it will be, because my dream scenario is not to be partisan in any of this, it's to have available a bigger audience."
Let's not forget about Wii, the console with the biggest rectangle on the seventh generation home console sales chart - not to mention an audience that fits Relentless' remit.
"We have Wii capability here," Eades revealed. "It is a platform we're looking at.
"We find it slightly more difficult because we think we're a bit late to the party, if you like, on Wii. There's a lot of good, solid games out there that are sufficiently supplying our audience, our market. So it's a bit harder for us to come in and compete there."
Relentless Software has already branched out to PC with the release of Blue Toad Murder Files. The studio has also announced its first iPhone game, Quiz Climber, which will be published by Angry Birds powerhouse Chillingo.

We'd raised our own concerns in interviews with both Stephen Elop and Microsoft's Aaron Woodman in the past week that Nokia could have difficulty pushing the Windows Phone platform low enough to fill the holes left by Symbian's departure in the bottom rungs of the market, but the Nokia CEO is making it very clear that he thinks that won't be a problem. In a talk with Finnish journalists on Friday, Elop said that it has become "convinced" that it can hit "a very low price point" and do it "very quickly," a strategy that will be key to converting significant swaths of Symbian market share into Windows Phone market share without losing it to other manufacturers or platforms. Of course, something tells us the leaked design concept(pictured right) doesn't represent the types of hardware Nokia has in mind for those low price points -- but no single device or market segment is going to take Espoo to the promised land here.

The last rendition we saw of the GAEMS console-carrying case looked more like a giant lunch box than a solution to your portable gaming needs. If you're still interested in bringing your Xbox 360 on the road, the company has redesigned the case and it now supports the fat and slim versions of the 360 and even the PS3-skinny. What's new in this compact carrying case is the fact there's actually room to store the console, controllers and power brick. It comes bundled with a remote, HDMI cable and power supply to power the speakers and LED screen. If you're road trippin' any time soon and want this beast, you can save yourself 20 bones by pre-ordering before April 20th and you'll receive the $300 case come June.

February 19th, 2011, 00:29 Posted By: wraggster
Finally, after several months of development and thousands of hours of testing and improvements (17 Firmware updates, 5 PCB revisions, countless software features and additions etc), with a BETA team of 18 members hammering the crap out of the X360USB PRO to make sure it is as rock solid as possible, the X360USB PRO has finally been green lit for production. The fact that we kept our heads and made sure that this wasn't a rushed project, that was developed and tested correctly by a huge team of experienced individuals so that everything worked in full on it's release to the public, will not only prove to everyone that this was most definitely worth the wait, but when it comes to our products we truly care about anything that has our name on it, and if you are willing to spend your hard earned money then we better damn well do the best job that we possibly can. You will never get half-assed from us !
We will run a batch of PCB Only versions and make sure a whole bunch of resellers get their hands on them so those early adopters can have a play before an official retail release. The full retail package will be shipping in force in the next 2-3 weeks.
If you would like to get your hands on a PCB Only version (will simply come without the case - functionality will be 1:1 retail), then let your reseller know so they can request how many they would like.
There are also other goodies in development as add-ons to the X360USB PRO which we will reveal soon. We will also (maybe, finally!) have time to actually push a retail release of the CK3-CP
Also, keep any eye out for a whole bunch of new retailers that have signed up to be direct distributors. If there isn't a dealer in your country then give them a poke and let them know what they are missing out on !

One manufacturer who has not boarded on the Windows Phone train to commerceville is Acer, who is certainly all over when it comes to Android. Why no WP7 love? No word on that front, but we're told that may be changing this fall. The company is reportedly looking at releasing one or more handsets for the platform to coincide with the first major Windows Phone update, currently given the saucy nom de guerre "Mango." That's right about when we're expecting our first Nokia WP7 handsets, which means things could be getting interesting in Microsoftia this September.

Medal Of Honor 2 is already in development at EA LA sub-studio Danger Close, following successful sales of the first game.
Danger Close chief and MoH executive producer Greg Goodrich revealed the news this evening.
Writing on the official EA Medal Of Honor blog, he said:
"Yes, Danger Close is currently working on the next Medal of Honor.
"Just recently, EA announced that the reboot of Medal of Honor was a big success with over 5 million copies sold. We wanted to take a moment to thank each of you for supporting us, our new studio and our storied franchise. We would especially like to thank all of the long time Medal of Honor fans out there who have stuck with us over the years.
"Since our launch last October, we've studied, listened and absorbed much of your feedback and are very excited to be marching forward on the next title. We can't wait to tell you more about it, so check back often to the website and the fan page on Facebook.
"As you all know, our goal was to tell the story of today's soldier and to do so with the utmost respect and reverence. We've received many letters, emails and messages from active servicemen and women from around the world, along with veterans and their families, with appreciation for our recent depiction of their community. I can't tell you how important this is to everyone here at Danger Close Games. You are the heartbeat of this team and this franchise and we are privileged and honored to tell your story. Medal of Honor has always been fueled by the passion of our fans and the commitment and sacrifice shown by the men and women of our armed services.
"It's going to be a fun ride for the Medal of Honor franchise. We are happy to have you aboard."
Medal Of Honor rode some notable controversy ahead of its release last year. Tory MP Liam Fox memorably called for the game to be banned, after mistakenly believing it allowed players to shoot at British soldiers.

From zdnet.com:
Over the past few days, more and more Microsoft watchers are noticing that Microsoft execs seem to be making a deliberate effort to avoid using the Z (Zune) word. That avoidance has set off a wave of speculation.
A spokesperson responded to my question late in the day of February 14:
“We’re not ‘killing’ any of the Zune services/features in any way. Microsoft remains committed to providing a great music and video experience from Zune on platforms such as Xbox LIVE, Windows-based PCs, Zune devices and Windows Phone 7, as well as integration with Bing and MSN.”
Windows Supersite blogger Paul Thurrott’s rebranding theory is sounding more and more plausible. But I’m thinking that Microsoft may opt to rebrand Zune as “Xbox entertainment,” rather than anything to do with Windows Live. After all, the Zune service already is available on the Xbox. And the rumored Zune HD2 — supposedly a device meant to compete with the iPod Touch — easily could be positioned and marketed as a portable gaming device.
Some veteran Microsoft heavy-hitters are moving to the Xbox division, as I’ve blogged recently, and are seemingly working on some kind of services-focused project. And the Zune team — which Microsoft split and reorged (twice) — is already in the Interactive Entertainment Business division, which is the home of the Xbox. Maybe the Zune service will end up as part of the evolving Microsoft IPTV strategy?

In all the Microkia hub-bub of late, as the best of Redmond and the pride of Tampere hold hands and blaze a trail to smartphone domination, the word "Zune" never once came up. This didn't escape the notice of many, including MS guru Paul Thurrott and ZDNet's Mary-Jo Foley, who inquired to someone at Microsoft about just what's going on -- whether indeed the brand is indeed being killed off. This is the non-denial that came back:
We're not 'killing' any of the Zune services/features in any way. Microsoft remains committed to providing a great music and video experience from Zune on platforms such as Xbox LIVE, Windows-based PCs, Zune devices and Windows Phone 7, as well as integration with Bing and MSN.
It's unclear what exactly is happening, especially when it comes to dedicated Zune hardware and services like Zune Pass, but it certainly seems like "Zune" as a brand is on its last legs. Feel free to share your favorite memories below, and try not to cry, because our hearts... our hearts will go on.

"It's not a bug, it's a feature" is one of the time-honored mantras of computer engineering, and Microsoft is using it to full effect with a behavior occasionally cursed by users of Windows Phone 7devices: the camera settings return to their defaults every time you load the camera app. Responding to a comment in the official Windows Phone Blog, a Microsoft rep says that the settings reset was actually "a decision by the team," noting that if you need to pull out your phone for a quick shot, you'd rather not have to fiddle with whatever wacky settings you had set up on the prior use. Continuing, he writes that "feedback from folks like [the commenter] has the team seriously looking at that option to see if there is a more optimal option," so it could change -- so your dream of shooting absolutely everything in sepia tone might be realized with a little less strife down the road

February 16th, 2011, 01:40 Posted By: wraggster
An all platforms patch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will launch soon, Infinity Ward has announced.
It will address "security issues that have affected online play", community man Robert Bowling said on the game's official forum.
The patch, which has finished production and is now going through internal quality assurance, will release for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
"Modern Warfare 2" and "security" have enjoyed a strained relationship following the release of hacker George "GeoHot" Hotz's PS3 jailbreak code onto the internet.
Last month Bowling, aka fourzerotwo, took to the official Infinity Ward forum to blame PS3 Modern Warfare 2 hacks on the console's compromised security.
"Sony has recently acknowledged a breach in security on the PS3 which resulted in games to become exposed to exploits and hacks," Bowling said.
"Modern Warfare 2 is no exception to this security exploit and we understand that some of you have experienced problems with stats and other issues associated with this."
Apparently PS3 Modern Warfare 2 players are susceptible to hacks that affect their statistics and, in some cases, delete their progress.
According to Bowling, Infinity Ward was powerless in the matter.
"Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they're played on, therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform," he said.
Was he wrong?
Following that controversial post, Bowling followed up with another that revealed Infinity Ward was working to resolve hacking issues.
The studio's "main focus" was on "preventing hackers from affecting legitimate players" and "addressing users who have already been affected", he said.
The patch will also address a "small geo exploit on the map Fuel". Players exploited it to get inside a rock on the outskirts of the map, apparently.

Motorola may have once said that it was "open" to developingWindows Phone 7 devices, but it looks like that possibility is now a whole lot less likely than it already was. Speaking at Mobile World Congress this week, Motorola's corporate vice president of software and services product management, Christy Wyatt, said that while she would never say never, she doesn't envision Motorola using Microsoft's OS, and added that "it's not something we're entertaining now." Wyatt went on to say that "there were a bunch of things that we believed about Microsoft that ended up not being true, mostly about what functionality it would have in what period of time," and further explained that Motorola is looking for "an opportunity to create unique value," and it doesn't feel it can do that on a "closed platform" like Windows Phone 7. Obviously, it does feel like it can create unique value with Android, and Wyatt dismissed concerns about a potential duopoly between Android and Apple, saying that "It could be a duopoly on platforms but I'm not sure why having another OS is a good or bad thing." Incidentally, she also said that the upgrade process for Motorola's Android phones has "humbled" the company a bit, and she promises improvements in the future, noting that "we were better with Froyo then with Éclair and we'll be even better with Gingerbread."
