Well, well, what's this? We were just sent this obvious mockup of an ESPN Xbox 360, which our tipster found just hanging out on a Microsoft PR server. Now, this could just be a branding exercise or the remnants of a failed idea, but now that ESPN 3 is live on the Xbox 360 Fall 2010 Dashboard Update, it makes sense for the two companies to explore a branded console -- we know a lot of college students (and Engadget editors) who'd love to ditch their cable and still get ESPN through their 360s. We'll see what comes to pass -- and if Microsoft wisens up and tones down that red.
Update: Microsoft's PR team just pinged to say that this was indeed just a promotional mockup. Sad faces all around, sports fans. Here's the statement:
The custom ESPN console was an asset designed to celebrate the launch of ESPN on Xbox LIVE. There are no plans to manufacture an ESPN-branded console for sale at retail.

Call of Duty Black Ops looks to have been a sales success on its launch day, following fears that it may not outsell Modern Warfare 2.
A tweet by Treyarch community manager Josh Olin revealed that just shy of one million gamers were shown as playing the game on Xbox Live yesterday.
"Am I getting solid intel? Is there really almost 1,000,000 players on Xbox LIVE right now?" he exclaimed.
Meanwhile, Steam stats reveal that a peak of 77,609 people were playing the PC version's multiplayer mode concurrently over the last day, and 64,267 its singleplayer. This is a significantly higher amount than those playing perennial Steam multiplayer hits such as Counter-Strike and Modern Warfare 2 over the same period.
None of these figures represent the game's total sales, as in both instances they reveal just the number of owners of the game playing at a given time, and in the 360's case just those online and logged into Live.
In addition, Black Ops' unlocking on Steam was delayed in a number of territories until 10AM EST (3PM UK time). Furthermore, no data for PS3 is available as yet.
Twitter trends also highlighted Black Ops' dominance of gamers' attention, accruing a total of 104,830 tweets over the last 24 hours - with Microsoft's Kinect, which launched last night, mustering a mere 28,495 by comparison. Those figures refer only to Tweets using the relevant hashtags.

With Kinect going on sale across Europe today amid concerns over hardware shortages, Microsoft UK boss Neil Thompson last night insisted new stock would be coming in "more or less every week".
Thompson, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at the official London launch event, added that the company was in the process of hiring more planes to ensure units could be delivered in greater numbers.
The exec's words were backed by Xbox marketing head Stephen McGill, who said: "Our responsibility and our plan is to keep on replenishing our stock. The team are working 24/7 to build it, ship it, get it on the planes, and get it on the trucks.
"We'll have regular replenishments and we expect hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people in the UK to be having it for Christmas."
The London launch event, held in the grounds of the Natural History Museum, featured performances from boyband The Wanted and former X Factor champion Leona Lewis, with an official midnight opening held at GAME's flagship Oxford Store.

Microsoft's motion sensor Kinect is "incredibly liberating" for women.
That's according to Belinda Parmar of ladygeek.com, who was interviewed as part of a piece on Channel 4 News to coincide with the launch of the Xbox 360 add-on.
"For women, that's incredibly liberating," she said. "Why it's important that it appeals to women is women control the living room. There's a real battle going on for the living room. Women are the gatekeepers of that. They decide what's coming in, what's coming out."
Microsoft hopes Kinect, which enables controller-free gaming, will broaden the appeal of the Xbox 360 as well as extend the life of the console.
"The key thing is it's something for everybody - Kinect appeals to all different types of people, casual and core gamers," Stephen McGill, head of the UK Xbox business, told Eurogamer in an interview published today.
"We announced some core games at Tokyo Game Show and we'll be showing more of them in the months ahead, but I think the games we've got for Kinect for launch and through Christmas will surprise people. Core gamers may not have expected some of these games to be as appealing as I know they're going to find them."
"Microsoft Kinect, this is a great opportunity to get inside the living room," Parmar added. "Traditionally consoles have been relegated to the bedroom or the attic or the boy's den."
Tell us about your boy's den, readers.

Microsoft has sued Motorola over patent fees for Xbox 360 technology licensed from the phone maker.
According to MS, Motorola has breached contractual obligations to fairly license patents on wireless networking and video coding featured in its games console.
"Motorola has refused to extend to Microsoft a license consistent with Motorola's promises for any of Motorola's identified patents," MS said in its complaint, according to Bloomberg.
"Instead, Motorola is demanding royalty payments that are wholly disproportionate to the royalty rate that its patents should command under any reasonable calculus."
Unsurprisingly, Motorola tells a different story.
"We worked with Microsoft to reach an agreement that would have allowed Microsoft to use our proprietary technologies without infringing Motorola's patents," said company spokesperson Jennifer Erickson.
"Unfortunately, despite a fair offer from Motorola, Microsoft was unwilling to enter into a licensing agreement."
Three weeks ago Microsoft also filed patent-infringement claims against Motorola in a bid to block US imports of the firm's Android phones.

David Braben has again said that his studio’s upcoming title Kinectimals will not include any tech developed for the Lionhead project Milo & Kate.
Speaking to VG247 during the Kinect launch party in London last night, the Frontier boss was asked what contribution Lionhead tech had made to the game, and responded “none at all”.
Braben previously attempted to end persistent tech crossover rumours in July of this year, saying that Kinectimals had been in development since before Milo & Kate was revealed.
“It is built using Frontier’s own technology shared with other Frontier games in development, and ideas evolved from earlier games like Dog’s Life,” he said.
“There has not been any involvement in the technology or design by Lionhead. Milo & Kate is a completely separate, and intriguing, development from Lionhead.”

November 10th, 2010, 13:04 Posted By: wraggster
After all the talk and all the hype, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Kinect is finally on sale in the UK.
Following the arrival of Sony’s Move in the UK in September, the launch of Kinect today means that the motion control revolution started by Nintendo last decade has now finally spread to all corners of the gaming market.
Kinect stock is expected to be tight, with the situation possibly persisting all the way up to Christmas as Microsoft attempts to reach its target of 5m units sales for the device worldwide this holiday.
At the official launch event at London’s Natural History Museum last night, pop group The Wanted and X Factor sensation Leona Lewis were at hand to welcome Kinect’s arrival. Attendees were then free to take to the ice at the museum’s open-air ice rink or play Kinect at one of the many game booths.
At midnight thousands of consumers queued at entertainment retailers and supermarkets to be the first to grab one of the £130 peripherals.
“We are delighted to put Kinect into people’s living rooms and turn science fiction into science-fact,” Microsoft’s general manager for the Entertainment and Devices Division in the UK and Ireland Neil Thompson stated.
“Kinect transforms games and entertainment experiences, offering an intuitive and simple way that everyone will enjoy.”

Xbox Live Indie Game developers have praised Microsoft for switching the XBLIG channel back to the Games & Demos section of the Xbox 360 dashboard.
Microsoft's backtrack followed an outpouring of anger from indie developers incensed that their games were shunted to the Speciality Shops tab away from other Xbox Live releases.
"As a community I'd say we're all very, very happy," Mike Bergenstjerna of MStar Games told Eurogamer.
"There have been some positive noises made about solving other problems too over the last four or five days, including the long-standing stats issue.
"It's just nice to know that there are people listening really - we all adore developing for the 360 and want to carry on, because it's one of the best consumer entertainment devices available in the world with probably the most diverse customer base of any of the three mainstream consoles. Now we've just got to write the games to prove that we're worth it!"
Explosionade and Weapon of Choice creator Nathan Fouts echoed Bergenstjerna's comments.
"Indie Games are now rightly alongside other games once again. For us, trial downloads of Shoot 1UP and Explosionade were down 30-40 per cent while I know other developers were seeing even bigger losses of trials in the Specialty Shop.
"It's great to know that Microsoft is actually listening to independent developers and able to respond to our concerns even while they're mad with phone and full-body controller fever.
"Now, can we get something done about the Avatar art on the cover - can it just be the newest arrivals like every other section? I know...too soon."

We knew there was more viral video goodness to be had with Kinect than lots and lots and lots of little green dots. And here you have it: people the world o'er punching each other, falling into things, and just generally making making asses of themselves by paying more attention to the TV than whatever objects might exist in the physical world that surrounds them. And you wondered why commercials for the device all featured players in very, very large rooms! Check out a couple of our faves after the break, and be sure to sound off in the comments if you have any of your own.

Adafruit's bounty on open source drivers for Microsoft's Kinect may have been already won. Someone called 'KinectMan2' has posted videos of Kinect's output as seen on Windows 7 to YouTube. That was fast. Hopefully Linux drivers are coming soon."
A few more details are available on a forum post the man made. Adafruit said the bounty could be his if he posts the source code, and they also upped the reward to $3,000 in response to another silly statement from Microsoft.

Rockstar's new open world detective game LA Noire will be shown this week.
"The first trailer", as it's billed, will arrive at noon on Thursday, 11th November. That's noon Eastern Time, which means five hours later here: 5pm UK time.
LA Noire was delayed recently to "the first half of calendar 2011". The game was announced years ago in 2005.
It's a 1940s crime thriller based around you rising through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department. Central to everything is a magnificent-sounding motion-capture system, which records the look, voice and actions of real-life actors and then processes them into the game.
Such a level of detail enables a sophisticated interrogation mechanic, whereby players can judge facial expressions and behavioural quirks to determine whether a suspect is holding anything back. Team Bondi is also said to have written an unprecedented 300 pages of script for the game.

Xbox Live Indie Games are now back in the Games & Demos section of Xbox Live after Microsoft controversially placed them elsewhere.
Following the most recent dashboard update, independent games were moved to the Speciality Shops section of the Xbox Live Marketplace, with title names absent from searches on the service - causing upset amongst developers who felt their work would struggle to be discovered by consumers.
Microsoft defended the move stating it was an effort to group Xbox Live Indie Games together and make them easier to find.
However, the move has now been reversed, with the Xbox Live Indie Games once again in the Games & Demos section of the Game Marketplace.

November 10th, 2010, 00:37 Posted By: wraggster
GameStop's senior VP of marketing Bob McKenzie has said that he expects Kinect to outsell Move this Christmas, and that Call of Duty: Black Ops is the most pre-ordered game in company history.
Speaking to Eurogamer, McKenzie said that sales of the Kinect hardware in the US had actually been better than the retailer was initially expecting.
"I'd say right now Microsoft's Kinect is looking to be the winner of the two for us. We're very happy with the sell-through over the weekend. It has met our expectations and actually exceeded our initial forecasts."
"I do have them both, obviously, and the Move Sports bundle is a great option," he added, "but I knew for my family – with an eight-year-old daughter and ten-year-old boy – that Kinect was really going to be the thing that was more geared towards my household."
No official sales figures are available yet for Kinect, but Sony's Move is thought to have sold over 2.5 million units worldwide after Sony's Andrew House told press that 1.5 million had been sold in Europe and Jack Tretton revealed that over 1 million had been shipped in the US.
During the same call with Eurogamer, McKenzie also told our sister site that Call of Duty: Black Ops is the most pre-ordered game in the store's history, which would indicate that sales could well be even higher than those of its predecessor, Modern Warfare 2.
What he doesn't think will affect sales of the game is the fact that it was made by Treyarch instead of Infinity Ward.
"With each one they've done a better job," he told Eurogamer. "They're both making quality products, they both have a strong following and they're both known for great gameplay."
The review embargo for Black Ops has now expired, and reviews are up. Scores seem to be a little lower than they were for Modern Warfare and its sequel, but still in the 8-9 range.

It looks like 1 million players have already hit Xbox Live to partake in the multiplayer gunfights of Call of Duty: Black Ops.
The news comes from Treyarch's Josh Olin, who tweeted last night, hours after the game's release: "Am I getting solid intel? Is there really almost 1,000,000 players on Xbox LIVE right now??"
That's an astonishing number, and that's before they even talk about PS3 and PC figures.
Black Ops hit shelves at midnight last night, and already players are finding glitches in its multiplayer mode.

So you bought a new Xbox 360 S console bundled with Kinect and like many others, you found out that your new camera doodad doesn't come with its own power supply. Microsoft thought you intended to use your Kinect with the Slim and this console alone. However, if you purchased the standalone Kinect or plan to purchase the standalone to be used with old Xbox 360's, the power supply is included.
Microsoft's online store now has a listing for the power supply. You'll have to reach into your wallet for $34.99, if you want one. That's almost one whole fifth of the cost of Kinect on its own but if you need one, now you know where to get it.
You think this was intentional to be left out and make you spend more money or just poor choice or thinking?

If you want to run XBSlink on Linux go ahead and grad the XBSlink Linux package on the download page!
What do i need to run XBSlink on Linux?
* XBSlink requires the Mono .NET framework and the pcap library (v1.1.1) to be installed. Both are available in the repository of most Linux distributions.
* You need to run XBSlink with root privileges (otherwise libpcap won’t work)
Extract the XBSlink Linux package, go into the directory and run:
“sudo mono XBSlink.exe“

Kojima Productions' slice-em-up Metal Gear Rising will be released in 2012, according to Kotaku.
While Konami issued a no comment on the story to Eurogamer this morning, it did point out that it is yet to slap a release window of any kind on the game.
Rising was announced in the summer of 2009. Players assume the role of Raiden, the divisive cyborg samurai star of Metal Gear Solid 2, and slice stuff up – including human enemies – with a deadly sword.
Of note is the plan to release Rising on PC and Xbox 360 as well as PlayStation 3 – Metal Gear Solid 4 was a PS3 exclusive.
In September producer Shigenobu Matsuyama told Eurogamer he fears people may overreact to the game in the same way some did when Grand Theft Auto first burst onto the scene.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has sold $1.3bn (£800m) worth of his Microsoft shares, the first stock he's shed in seven years, but insists that it's no reason for investors to worry.
The stock sale, which still leaves Mr Ballmer holding 359 million shares - worth $9.6bn at current prices - is apparently being made to enable the CEO to exhibit some financial diversity and plan for tax payments.
"Even though this is a personal financial matter, I want to be clear about this to avoid any confusion," Ballmer said in an official statement. "I am excited about our new products and the potential for our technology to change people's lives, and I remain fully committed to Microsoft and its success."
According to that statement, Mr Ballmer plans to sell 75 million of his shares by the year's end.
Microsoft has set its entertainment division's financial sights high after Don Mattrick predicted five million Kinect sales this quarter, and a healthy financial report for Xbox this year.

Codemasters' Formula 1 series will eventually feed times set by real life drivers to the player so they can compete with them in real time.
The beginnings of this will be seen in F1 2011, confirmed for release next year, Codemasters told Eurogamer.
"You're not going to see us on the next one just add a couple more tracks and a couple more drivers because it's the F1 2011 version," CEO Rod Cousens promised.
"We'll put a lot more into the game's design and we'll add more and more to it. They can start to almost really be the driver. They'll have to strategically figure out the pit stops, when to buy the fuel, what tyres to drive on.
"Eventually you'll go down the line where you will feed telemetry data in real time to the consumer to let them adjust their car because they get serious about racing against their hero, who could have posted a time two hours beforehand. And you've got the real track sat in front of you.
"It's our responsibility to keep the consumer engaged."
F1 2010 was a commercial and critical success for Codemasters.
It scored an excellent 8/10 in Eurogamer's review, and debuted in the UK all-formats chart at number one.
Cousens praised the development team for its hard work: "It's a lot more than it all fell in our laps," he said of F1 2010's success.
Cousens also discussed how Codemasters' Birmingham studio, which is responsible for the F1 series, is tackling the difficult challenge of making a new F1 game every year.
"On GRID and DIRT we don't annualise them, we do them every second year," Cousens explained. "But on F1 you have to annualise it, so to an extent you run parallel teams.
"They have that issue on FIFA. You have an overlap. The first six months, as they finish they come on and start the next one and it goes through. So you have a team and a half in many ways to annualise it. Otherwise your development time becomes six to eight months and you compromise the product."
In September Eurogamer exclusively revealed that Codemasters had begin work on the next instalment in the F1 franchise.
"[We have the most work to do on] Live the Life and multiplayer, just because we've had to invest that much time in the first one on the career, the meat and bones, the driving, the pit-stops, the weather," Senior producer Paul Jeal said.
"We had some great ideas which have been fairly well stripped back in development for both Live the Life and multiplayer."
