Steve Ballmer has declared that the Xbox 360 has evolved beyond being just a games machine.
The Microsoft boss told USA Today that the launch of Kinect – as well as various other social and media features – makes the device a “family entertainment center”.
“Xbox isn’t a gaming console,” he said. “It’s a place to socialise. It’s a place to watch TV. It’s the only system were you are the controller. Your voice, your gestures, your body.”
Ballmer also wants the Xbox 360 to appeal to young girls, and believe the rise of Kinect will be key to this.
“You go to your average 15-year-old boy, and he will say, ‘I’ll take an Xbox’. I want that average 15-year-old girl [to be] as excited about the Kinect, and we haven’t done as good a job drawing in that broader set of demographics,” he said.
He anecdotally referred to his own experiences, highlighting how the company’s new motion controller has broadened the Xbox 360’s appeal.
“If you want to know where the consumer hear is, the things that people want to get their hands on, it’s Xbox and Xbox Kinect,” said Ballmer.
“My wife used to say, ‘No, no, that’s the machines the boys use,’ and now she says, ‘yeah, I want to go watch movies. Let’s go play the dance game’.
“It opens accessibility to family entertainment because with the Kinect, you control these systems with your body, with your voice. We’ve opened up the world of content in TV and movies. You just sit there and say ‘Xbox’ or ‘play movie’.”

In this build, the random crashing/rebooting has been fixed as well as some
other improvements to a few of the sfx, one of the announcers has been fixed as well as one of the maps that had a filename that was too long.
Other improvements to the SDL library also bring better pefermace and more
stability to this build. Multiple controllers isn't working yet so you'll still have to take turns, or fight the bots.
Fixes in this build are thanks to Lantus, cOz, stk50, and myself.
Thanks to the 72 DPI army for a great game.

The new Silver Xbox 360 controller will be available in the UK from 4th March, priced at £44.99.
According to Gamerzines, that price includes a Play & Charge add-on.
The new wireless controller, revealed last August, offers a "transformative" D-pad for more accurate control that rotates into either a standard 'plus' shape or a disc depending on your preference. It also tweaks the thumbstick, giving it a new concave top, and adds a grey tone finish to the A/B/X/Y buttons.
The new controller is already out in the US, with an RRP of $64.99, which converts to about £41.
The standard wireless controller currently sells for around £30, depending on where you shop.

Any good army isn't just staffed with believers of the cause. The easily-persuaded friends of those believers make up a crucial portion of every respectable army on the planet -- just ask Cobra Commander. That dude knows how to grease the wheels.
Microsoft understands this and has accordingly launched a "Refer-a-Friend" program of its own for Xbox Live, sans elaborate turkey dinner banquets. Referring friends (by Gamertag), can net existing Gold members tokens, which can be used to redeem one of four rewards, according to the promotion's "Official Rules":
Get your free member friend to go Gold and (1) you and your friend will each get 400 Microsoft Points* or (2) 600 Microsoft Points*, depending on the active offer.
Get your free member friend to go Gold and (3) you and your friend will get a multiplayer Xbox Live Arcade game of Microsoft's choosing.
Get your free member friend to try Gold with a promotional token good for 1 month of Gold, and (4) if your friend redeems the token within 30 days, you'll get 200 Microsoft Points*.
Recruiters (that's you!) can refer up to five friends per day, until the promotion's scheduled end date on July 1. Each recruiter is eligible to receive all four of the offers once during that time. Any funny business ("using multiple/different email addresses, Xbox Live accounts, identities, registrations and logins," etc.), Microsoft notes, will be grounds for disqualification -- but you won't be discharged from Xbox Live!
*Fine print: "Tokens to download points will expire on December 31, 2011. Once downloaded, promotional points will expire on June 30, 2012."

It's safe to say that, on the console gaming front, the Wiimote and the Kinect are competitors. But, take a step away to the world of PC gaming, and suddenly they can get along like old chums. That's what's demonstrated in the video below, created by YouTuber demize2010, which shows Call of Duty controlled by Wiimote, Nunchuk, and Kinect, enabling reloads, knife attacks, and peeking around corners. But wait, there's more! The Blitz marketing agency has worked up a demo in which the Kinect can be used with a Flash interface, which doesn't look too dissimilar from what Microsoft uses on the Xbox. This could open the door to fancier websites -- if indeed any large number of PC owners ever actually wind up buying a Kinect.

PrimeSense, the Israeli company responsible for the key technology in Microsoft's Kinect sensor, has raised $50 million funding.
According to Globes, the new cash from Silver Lake and existing investors Gemini, Genesis and Caanan Partners, brings total investment in the company to $79 million.
Although the firm has seen a number of acquisition offers, president Aviad Maziels said that the company wants to remain part of the local industry.
"We constantly get acquisition offers, but we want to be part of an industry in Israel and we don't intend to be easily sold," he said.
PrimeSense technology allows interaction with consumer technology without the need for traditional controllers, instead using voice and physical gestures.
While Microsoft is the company's only videogame console partner, it is working with other companies in the entertainment and PC markets.
Microsoft's Kinect sensor has been a considerable success, selling over 8 million units since launch in November.
PrimeSense hopes to grow from 50 employees to 80 this year.

Microsoft claims it sold out of Xbox 360 consoles during December and predicts shortages for January and February.
Ahead of tonight's NPD sales data for the US in December, Microsoft's Larry Hryb said that the shortages meant he didn't expect the company to "win" against Sony and Nintendo during the Christmas month.
"NPD tomorrow. I found out we ran out of consoles at end of the month so don't expect to win Dec," he said via Twitter.
"Jan/Feb supply is tight as well. Likely amazing YOY growth numbers for Xbox."
Analyst firm Wedbush Morgan has predicted Microsoft sold 2.5 million Xbox 360 units during December, up 92 per cent year-on-year, with rivals Nintendo shifting 2.6 million Wii's and Sony 1.2 million PlayStation 3 units.

To celebrate Castle Crashers reaching over 2 million players on Xbox Live Arcade, developer The Behemoth is giving away a pretty mental prize to the slash-em-up's best player.
"With all these people playing Castle Crashers many have claimed to have the unparalleled skillz, the bestest combos, the most awesome attacks," the developer wrote on its blog. "Finally, once and for all we shall know: Who is the best Castle Crashers Arena Fighter in all the world?"
The first prize of the 'Tournament of Champions' is a Gold Xbox. Yes - a functional Xbox plated in 24k GOLD. It looks fantastic.
"Imagine playing on a golden Xbox. Envision the look on your friend's faces. Kings and Queens would come over to your house to play BattleBlock Theater," Behemoth gags.
Second prize wins a Castle Crashers themed Xbox 360 Elite (not gold) and third place is unfortunate enough to receive 250 squishy chickens.
To be eligible for the tournament you have to be in the top 100 Weekly Ranked Arena players on the Castle Crashers leaderboards at noon (PST) on January 28. You will have all that week to battle for those spots.
The top 100 will compete in 1 on 1 Arena matches, in a single elimination tournament format on Saturday February 5, says Beth.
If only we were good (or excitable) enough...

We've been begging Microsoft to somehow add Mac compatibility to the Zune for years, and it looks like there's a tiny little ray of hope buried in Redmond's Windows Phone 7 Connector for OS X: a simple plist modification will let it sync the Zune HD as well. That really shouldn't be any big surprise, since WP7's media interface is built on top of Zune, but at least it's something -- although we're still hoping and wishing for the full Zune suite (and Zune Pass) to make its way to the Mac someday.

Just to confirm we are forced to move the release date to first week of February, the main reasons of this delay are the case manufacturing and also another feature we are implementing to be available at launch. More information on this feature will be published in a few days. This small lizard is getting more tech.
We want to say thank you to every pre-order owner, we can ensure you will be happy with the final unit features, thanks for the patience. We will post pictures of the accessory set that we will include on every preordered unit in a couple of days. Also pictures of the assembled boards will be available by next week.
Lastly we have set up a twitter account: @maximus_lizard so from now on we will be posting small daily (hopefully) updates of the Lizard project via twitter. Remember for Major Official News we still be using this website page.

Microsoft has reiterated that it has no plans to ditch the core audience that helped propel Xbox 360 to 50 million worldwide sales, despite the amazing success of Kinect, which sold eight million units during its first 60 days and still doesn't work in my house.
"Obviously we're very excited by the success of Kinect," US PR bod David Dennis told IGN at CES this week. "But we have no intention of abandoning the Xbox 360 audience that bought in originally. We're very aware of the key role the enthusiastic core audience played in making the Xbox 360 what it is, and we'll continue to support and develop [games] like Halo and Gears of War."
Unsurprisingly, Dennis also said that there are some core-focused games in development yet to be announced.
On a related note, we're also told to expect more improvements to Xbox Live in future. Apparently Microsoft has mainly invested in behind-the-scenes upgrades this past year to help accommodate the releases of Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops, but it remains keen to add features Live users want.
One such feature is the option to have more than 100 friends on your friends list. As Dennis noted, it "only affects a certain percentage of users, but clearly it's very important to them".

So, remember all those times that you asked us how the Kinect manages to identify your human form and adapt it into an in-game Avatar? Remember how we told you that it did so with "robot magic?" We may have been a little off-base with that one -- the Xbox Engineering blog recently posted a full explanation of the all-seeing eye's actual inner workings in a manner simplistic enough for even technophobic cavemen such as ourselves to understand.
The post also gives a little insight into the trial-and-error development of Kinect. It sounds like it was a pretty fascinating process -- though apparently the dev team didn't even think to incorporate robot magic, which, in our opinion, seems like a pretty major oversight.

[Brett Graham] and [David Cox] are taking the Kinect out into the world thanks to this handheld hack they call the Drill of Depth. Apparently, the Kinect wants 12V at 1A which is quite easy to provide with a rechargeable power tool like this Ryobi drill. The setup features a 4.3″ touchscreen display, connected to the Gumstix Overo Air that is running Linux. They claim that there’s a “legitimate scientific reason” for building the device but they’re not sharing it yet.
So what would you use this for? We wonder if it would be possible to roll a GPS into the mix, then use post processing from the captured data to recreate the environment in a virtual setting? Imagine if a weekend spent walking around campus and processing the results let you model your University and make it an add-on level for your favorite game. Or perhaps this could be paired with a regular camera to generate high-quality 3D skinning data for Google Earth. That’s what we came up with, what do you think?

Sure, Kinect is doing dandy, but how about the console it Kinects connects to? Quite well, really, to the tune of 50 million Xbox 360 units shipped worldwide to date. That's according to Microsoft prez Steve Ballmer at tonight's CES 2011 keynote.
Not to let Sony be alone in trumpeting its respective console's online service user numbers, Ballmer just dropped some additional facts and figures on his audience about Xbox Live usage: 30 million people have accounts on XBL, up five million from November 2010. (On November 11 of last year, it was revealed that 25 million accounts had been created overall.)
Hey, Microsoft -- you keep signing 'em up, we'll keep muting 'em.

As many times as we've tried to write about Nyko's lineup for CES 2011, we're having a hard time shaking the feeling that someone is watching us while we work. We keep writing these hilarious jokes about how we're glad there are two different plastic gun peripherals for the Move (larger Power Shot and pistol-shaped Perfect Shot, also available in Wii flavor), just so we can [punchline, punchline, punchline]. But when we go to fill in the brackets with chuckle cream, a chill shoots down our spine and we know that somewhere someone, or something, is glowering silently.
Wait, is it ... could it be? Could it be that the Xbox 360 Slim-shaped Intercooler STS is the unthinking, unfeeling cyclops making our delicate work so difficult? ... What's that? What do you mean you don't see it? Here, let us help:

Microsoft has announced that motion sensing camera Kinect has sold over 8 million units in the 60 days since launch, smashing the target of five million set before release.
The success has helped push Xbox 360 sales to more than 50 million units sold worldwide, said CEO Steve Ballmer at CES in Las Vegas yesterday, and the Xbox Live service now has over 30 million members.
"A new member joins Xbox Live every two seconds," said Ballmer. "Kinect and Xbox Live have helped drive consumer demand for the Xbox itself. Xbox 360 has been the number one selling console every month for the last six months here in the United States. And sales for the Xbox 360 are now over 50 million units worldwide.
He added: "As many of you know, we predicted that we would sell about five million of these Kinect sensors by the end of the holiday season. We beat that forecast. In the first 60 days we sold over eight million Kinect sensors worldwide. This has been the biggest holiday and the biggest year ever for Xbox."
Microsoft also showed off a new social application for Xbox 360, Avatar Kinect, that allows users to interact using Kinect and their own Xbox Live avatars, promising to map facial expressions. Due in Spring, Avatar Kinect will be free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers.
Ballmer also revealed that the Netflix service on Xbox Live will get Kinect support in the Spring, as will Hulu Plus, later this year.
