A number of Xbox 360 owners have reported suffering console failures shortly after buying Kinect.
According to the BBC, users are blaming the motion sensing peripheral for new instances of the dreaded red ring of death - although the possibility that their systems could have red ringed anyway obviously looms large.
"We plugged it [Kinect] in the day we got it but only played it a few times before we got the red lights," Adam Winnifrith told BBC Radio 4's You and Yours.
"The next day when we tried it again we still had the red rings of death and haven't been able to use it since."
Online gaming forums are carrying similar stories.
"I have never had a single issue with my Xbox," one poster wrote. "i got Kinect for Christmas and the screen starting freezing randomly. Then on New Year's eve... BAM I got the red ring. Very sad."
Another read: "Yep, I got the Red rings of death on Christmas day The very same day my kids got a Kinect."
Responding to the report, Microsoft denied any link between Kinect and Xbox 360 failures.
"There is no correlation between the three flashing red lights error and Kinect," the firm said in a statement. "Any new instances of the three flashing red lights error are merely coincidental."
Microsoft claimed last month that its 2011 will "ultimately be all about Kinect" - as the device spearheads a "brilliant" line-up on 360.

Silver-haired EA overlord John Riccitiello finds it "really hard to imagine" a future where he's "hiding behind my couch, making a gun out of my finger" and shooting baddies in Call of Duty or Medal of Honor.
"I've had a number of people ask me, 'Will gesture-based gaming replace controllers?'" Riccitiello told IndustryGamers.
"I don't think so.
"There will be genres where the gesture-based gaming, however delivered (Kinect, Move or any other device that comes down the road), will actually be the superior way to play: dance games, music games, exercise games. It's really hard to imagine [playing] an exercise game with your thumbs.
And, he added: "It's really hard to imagine that I'm going to play a future edition of Medal of Honor, or Call of Duty, or Battlefield, hiding behind my couch, making a gun out of my finger. I've tried driving with gesture-based controls; I don't really like it."
But he reckons sports games could successfully incorporate gesture controls for scrolling through menus, picking teams or "calling plays" - "that's very possible".
"The more interesting thing for Kinect and Move," he went on to say, "is going to be what happens late next year in terms of how we see them, and then what new genres sprout up to support those control systems.
"I mean, if it weren't for plastic guitars, the music sector never would have happened. In the same sort of way, what's going to trigger the hot game? What's going to use Kinect in just that way?"
Riccitiello also questions how "long lived" the popularity of Kinect and Move will be, and draws on his family's past experience with Wii as evidence. There was a console that typically housed a single game, whereas PS3 and Xbox 360 had "three or four games going at any given time". The latter were longer-play experiences, too, eating up multiple hours, compared to the short-play thrills of Wii.
Kinect and Move were both released towards the end of 2010. Analysts predict sales numbers are "neck and neck" despite the first-glance disparity between Sony's 4.1 million shipped Move tally and Microsoft's 2.5 million actual sales of Kinect.
All analysts agree with Riccitiello, however, that 2011 will be a pivotal year for Kinect and Move. Will they sink as novelties or swim as Wii-style successes? And how will Nintendo counter that?

We were tempted to make a joke about avoiding the unnecessary risk of overheating your Xbox 360 when we saw this video for Nick Carouso's "XToaster360" -- a toaster gutted and turned into a custom console -- but that's a little stale. The case mod is currently up for auction on eBay with a starting bid of $150 ... so we're assuming there's no Valhalla inside. (There's also no hard drive -- just the ability to use USB thumb drives.)
While the XToaster is still pretty neat, what with its blue LEDs and novelty factor, there are a couple of other issues with the design: For one, it doesn't actually make toast. Also, Carouso kept the disc drive horizontal, missing the opportunity to insert a game through one of the toaster's bagel-accommodating slots. Maybe he was worried about it ejecting early -- or worse: jamming?

If you're looking for an awesome, impractical way to make music with your computer (and who isn't?) please direct your attention to the following Kinect hack. Shinect, the brainchild of a YouTube user named Shinyless, uses motion detection to turn you into a MIDI controller! The current implementation gives the operator two virtual pads that can be activated by the old Jersey Shore fist pump -- and if that ain't enough, the sounds can be pitchshifted by raising / lowering the other arm. Pretty sweet, huh? This thing uses OpenNI, and while he's demonstrating it using FruityLoops it should work with any MIDI device. Things are pretty rough'n ready at the moment, although he promises big things in the future.

ASUS, a PC hardware company, has decided to make its very own Kinect.
Far from a shameless rip-off, the device - named the WAVI Xtion - has been co-developed by PrimeSense, the company that provided Microsoft with 3D sensing tech for Kinect.
The WAVI Xtion is poised for a Q2 2011 release, with a worldwide roll-out to be carried out in phases thereafter.
What's more, the duo - PrimeSense and ASUS - have put together a suite of tools called Xtion PRO for developers to create applications and software with. This will be available in February, bizarrely, before the WAVI Xtition - perhaps the tools also work with other devices, cough, Kinect.
What's more, there's the opportunity for enthusiasts and developers alike to sell their creations on an Xtion online store, too. And ASUS clearly has one eye on gaming, if quoted buzz-phrases like "revolutionise users' recreational lives" are to be taken at face value.
"ASUS combines its wireless cross-room solution with PrimeSense's simple, intuitive, gesture-based control technology to allow users to enjoy and share PC content on TV with gestures. WAVI Xtion is the unprecedented living room experience that will revolutionise users' recreational lives," buzzed ASUS general manager Kent Chien.

Kinect owners may soon be able to interact with each other using their Avatars in a dedicated area.
Website Glimpse Dog (via NeoGAF) published leaked slides it claims will feature in Microsoft's Consumer Electronics Show keynote in Las Vegas on Wednesday night (early Thursday morning UK time).
According to Winrumors.com, "The slides reference Avatar Kinect, which Microsoft is set to introduce at CES. The software update, delivered over Xbox Live, will allow Kinect owners to interact with each other using their Avatars. The Avatars will have a separate area, much like Nintendo's Mii channel, that will allow for users to control them using Kinect and interact to watch content or play games."
Microsoft will stream its CES keynote live on Facebook.

Gligli is working to add support for JTAG/Homebrew Jasper 360s to libXenon, a library for writing programs for the Xbox 360 with XeLL, without using any existing code as a basis.
GliGli reports on logic-sunrise.com he managed to run a demo written with libXenon on a JTAGged 360 with Jasper motherboard.
There's still lots of work to be done, but once finished all JTAGable 360s will be compatible with the legal and open-source library. He hopes it will motivate more developers with write homebrew 360 programs using this legal alternative to the MS XeDK.

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...upTTSoyJLi.php
Kai Schtrom released a new version of DosFlash - a PC tool to flash your drive via DOS.
What's new/fixed:
* SATA and IDE port scan improved in DOS and Windows. The ports are now enumerated with the CONFIG_ADDRESS and CONFIG_DATA register instead of using interrupts in DOS and SetupDixx functions in Windows. This change will detect more ports in Windows than the old SetupDixx method.
* Settings saved to ini file for DosFlash32 and DosFlash64. Settings like Port, Position, Task, COM Port, Enable Drives and DvdKey state are now saved to an ini file inside the program folder. If the ini file is not present it is created after the first run. On the first startup DosFlash will choose the most common and stable settings.
* EnableDrives option included in dialog as a check box. Due to high demand we removed the "Enabling CD-/DVD-ROMs" MessageBox on program termination and included a check box "Enable Drives" inside the dialog. For security and more stability this is deactivated on the first run. If you enable it the checked state is saved to the ini file.
* enabling drives in Windows caused some hangs from time to time, this is now fixed by a recoded enable drives function
* port drivers portio32.sys and portio64.sys are now added to the executable and unpacked during runtime
* PATA and SATA controllers list updated
* Fix for NForce motherboards in combination with drives like the "Samsung SH-D163C", "LG DH18NS40" or "LiteOn iHDS118". Some drives have problems with flash identify, read, write and erase. This is clearly related to the NVidia NForce chipset. For manual mode in DosFlash16 an additional command line parameter is added called "NFORCE FIX". This parameter should be set to 1 for NForce chipsets if you experience strange problems. In DosFlash32 and DosFlash64 we added a static control which shows if the NForce Fix is applied or not. Remember there is no need to activate this with every drive. It seems to be a combination between drive and NForce chipset that causes the problem. The fix is automatically applied for DosFlash16 in auto mode, DosFlash32 and DosFlash64.
* DosFlash32 and DosFlash64 are now DPI Aware for Windows7
* New task Verfiy Key/Inject Key added for verification/injection of drive keys. All DosFlash versions now have the possibility to validate drive keys against an XBOX360 drive and set the key for an XBOX360 drive. We use the same authentication method like the console to verify a key. In the Windows versions you have the choice to paste the drive key from the clipboard to our custom hex edit control or load a key file. To add a key simply click right inside the hex edit control and select your choice from the shortcut menu. In DosFlash16 you can enter the key in the format "1A-2B-3C" without quotes. Remember that a key has 16 bytes of data. The key file to import should also have 16 bytes of data like the key files exported by LiteOn Key functions.
* Removed multiple key extractions for LiteOn Key functions, added Verify Key after extraction. For LiteOn Key functions we removed the multiple extractions, because the key is now verified immediately against the XBOX360 drive.
* LiteOn Key V1 and V2 now also extract the file Serial.bin and the 2nd inquiry file Inquiry2.bin. We added the file Serial.bin and Inquiry2.bin to LiteOn Key functions. Inquiry2.bin is only generated for LiteOn drives V1 and V2.
* The drive key of Maximus patched UART drives can be extracted by using the task "LiteOn Key V1 (DvdKey)". The drive check has been removed from LiteOn Key functions. This way we can extract a key from an UART patched drive firmware by Maximus.
* LiteOn files are now extracted to a destination folder instead of prompting the user for every file name.
* LiteOn key extraction tasks separated per drive version in "LiteOn Key V1 (DvdKey)", "LiteOn Key V2 (FreeKey)" and "LiteOn Key V3 (Tarablinda)"
* In DosFlash32 and DosFlash64 the number of installed COM ports in the system are now enumerated instead of adding port 1 to 4
* For failing cdb commands the sense code is returned
* Geremia's Tarablinda functionality added. We added all Tarablinda tasks to every DosFlash version. You can extract the key by choosing the task "LiteOn Key V3 (Tarablinda)". For read, write and erase of the flash simply use the standard functions. Pay attention that the "LiteOn Erase V1/V2" task is only available for older LiteOns and not for the Slim. You should use "Read Flash", "Write Flash" and "Erase Flash" for the Slim. "LiteOn Key V3 (Tarablinda)" extracts 1 additional file in comparison to Tarablinda v04b, this file is called Xtram.bin and contains a dump of the XTRAM8000 area. This can differ in a few bytes from one dump to the next.
* Device Reset in DosFlash16 manual mode is now done automatically, there is no option to turn it off anymore
* Code optimization to work with modern SATA2 controllers added, remember to set SATA controllers to IDE and not AHCI mode otherwise Port I/O will not work
* Warning: The read, write and erase of the Slim drive is considered risky in general! So pay attention and always remember you use DosFlash on your own risk every time! Even during flash read the Slim gets flashed with a patched firmware sector to retrieve the complete dump!
* We had to change many command line arguments for DosFlash16 Manual Mode, because of the NForce Fix, added Tarablinda support and splitting of LiteOn Key functions. To get a better understanding we added the example section below.
Many thanks to Geremia, Modfreakz, Redline99 and Tiros for their support. Special thanks to Geremia and Modfreakz for drive sponsoring, testing, coding and much more. It is always a pleasure to work with you professional guys! Respect to Maximus for his UART enable patch. I'm looking forward to your magic Lizard hardware flasher!

World of Warcraft is a lot of things to a lot of people, a whole lot of people, but it's never been much of an immersive gameplay experience -- casting Plague Strike doesn't seem all that unholy when it's triggered by frantically tapping a key on a keyboard. Moving an arm would be at least a bit more involving, and with the Flexible Action and Articulated Toolkit, or FAAST, from the USC Institute for Creative Technologies, that's just what you can do. It's basically a software layer over your Kinect, built over OpenNI, that recognizes a skeleton and enables about 20 different motions to be mapped to key presses. This means you can lean forward to walk, raise your right arm to perform an action, and then sit down to take a breather after all that exertion. It's currently versioned .03, so don't expect miracles, but it is available for free at the other end of the source link. It's also demonstrated below, but don't tarry too long: guild meeting starts in five.

GAFBlizzard of the mp3car.com forums posted an alpha release of the Xbox 360 Controller Chatpad drivers for Windows XP/Vista/7:
[QUOTE]
This project aims to provide drivers and utilities to provide unofficial support for the Microsoft XBox 360 controller chatpad under various Windows operating systems. The chatpad is a small keyboard that attaches to a controller, but Microsoft has not released Windows drivers. Thus, this project exists to provide a solution.
Currently, only wired controllers are supported. Future plans include investigating support for wireless XBox 360 controllers.

We've seen plenty of Kinect hacks over the last few weeks -- trouble is, beyond the initial wow factor they're just not very useful on a daily basis. That situation just changed, however, with the release of KinEmote, a free public beta that lets Windows users navigate XBMC and Boxee menus using nothing but hand gestures. Better yet, the software is built around OpenNI and NITE middleware from PrimeSense, the company behind the Project Natal reference gear. It certainly looks impressive in the video after the break. Good enough that we suspect many of you will hit up the source link below instead of finishing up your last minute holiday shopping -- hey, Santa can wait, this is progress!

I think it's time to try to revive the free60/libxenon legal homebrew scene [note x-s: libxenon is a library for writing programs for the Xbox 360 with XeLL, without using any existing code as a basis]
I have submitted patches to libxenon [note x-s: see here] to try to make it more usable, it's still far from perfect but you can already do some stuff with it.
As a 'proof' of that, here's a preview vid of a Nintendo 64 emulator that uses libxenon:

Last week, a series of new games and app updates were released to the Zune Marketplace for your Zune HD:
Snowball
Finger Physics
Tiki Totems
A Beanstalk Tale
Alarm Clock
Facebook (Updated)
Twitter (Updated)
For anyone keeping track, that's 27 games and 12 communication/entertainment/other - for a grand total of 39 apps. My general feeling is, why bother? I don't think 39 free apps are going to sway people who are looking for a device with apps - they're going to go for an iPod Touch. It's nice that they're all free, but in the end, I'd prefer to see effort spend on the device and desktop software that would improve upon the things that we bought a Zune HD for in the first place: media consumption.
