News via http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/dow...r-zune-hd.html
Name: Liberate
Version: 1.6.1
Author: Netrix, Microsoft (explorer.exe and wceload.exe)
Licenses: 'Free to distribute and modify, provided that credit is given' and Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Shared Source License (explorer.exe and wceload.exe)
This is an active project.
This app liberates your Zune HD's display to allow you to run applications and games that render using GDI, DirectDraw or OpenGL ES 2.0. However, many things will not work without adding additional libraries that they need in order to run. (The most common ones are included.)
To find software that has been found to work so far, please see the Liberate Compatibility List. If you find that software that works, please add it to the table.
Anything that was made to work on Windows CE devices (StrongARM or ARM CPU) has a chance of working. If it was made for MIPS or SH3/SH4, it will definitely not work. Also, Windows Mobile software might work, but has a much lower chance of working.
Users can use the File Deployer to deploy their own files to use with Liberate. Just add your files to the Content folder, deploy it, then run it. Your files will be deployed to /Flash2/Files. A shortcut to that folder will appear on the Liberate desktop after running File Deployer, however rebooting will cause the shortcut to disappear. Your files will stay in /Flash2/Files and you will still be able to access them by double-tapping "My Device", "Flash2", then "Files".
Developers could create OpenZDK games/apps (or port existing software) that use GDI or OpenGL ES 2.0 and create a shortcut in Start -> Programs so users could run this app, then launch software through the Start menu.
Update:
-Added links to the source code for everything related to Liberate and File Deployer.
-Enabled multi-touch and accelerometer use within Liberate through a service. (Refer to the Multi-touch test to see how it is done).
-Added pinging to try to fix the timeout issue.
-Fixed the glitchy keyboard keys.
-Any CABs can now be installed by double-tapping them.
-Two touches cause the next single touch to be a right-click. Three touches disable/enable this functionality.
Yet to come: (in likely order)
-Proper fixing of Wi-Fi timeout.
-Backing up of Start menu shortcuts.
-Backing up of apps' Registry entries.
-More options for right-clicking.
Note: When the app is run, Explorer will show and then after a few seconds, the screen will become black for a second. Try not to touch the screen while it is black. If you do touch it, it will stay black. In that case, simply press the Home button once to fix it. Also, avoid pressing the Home button when the screen is not black or holding the power button (except to reboot the Zune), as doing so might cause the input to stop working.
Regarding CABs:
Install them to a folder on /Flash2, otherwise the files will disappear after rebooting and they might not even install properly.
If it says there is not enough space, click "no" and install it anyway. If it says that it is not compatible (but the program is supposed to be compatible with ARM), install it anyway.
If it says that it is "not a valid Windows CE setup file", that probably because it is compressed. In that case, you would need to find one that is not compressed, or try extracting the files with MSCEInf and see if they work.

News via http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/dow...ntyrianhd.html
From OpenTyrian Gcode site:
OpenTyrian is a port of the DOS shoot-em-up Tyrian. Jason Emery generously gave the OpenTyrian developers a copy of the Tyrian 2.1 source code, which has since been ported from Turbo Pascal to C. The port uses SDL, making it easily cross-platform.
Tyrian is an arcade-style vertical scrolling shooter. The story is set in 20,031 where you play as Trent Hawkins, a skilled fighter-pilot employed to fight Microsol and save the galaxy.
1-22 UPDATE: OK, somehow things are starting to work. The demo now works, as well as the buy/sell menu before entering a level. Also, I now have a bit of a speedup on video with a few minor code corrections.
The problems behind why the demo and level menu weren't working are still there, and that's why in-level won't work. But, I have hope that won't take too much longer. Once that's in place, I'll be able to release an alpha (since none of the platform-specific updates, like utilizing the keyboard, are in place).
1-23 UPDATE: I am happy to announce that in-game is now working! All of the bugs seem to have been worked out, and I can now focus on control schemes.
By the way, I'm officially looking at removing tilt controls, at least in the menus (keeping it in-game still shouldn't be a problem, but it will be an option for either way), and am therefore going to be looking into various button layouts, like what VBZ has, so if anyone is interested in making some layouts for it, I will be able to give some dimensions of the shrunken screen for you to go by sometime later today.
This is only a preview because I don't have the in-game working yet. However, because of the progress that has been made just getting it to this point, getting in-game working doesn't seem like that big of a deal, and shouldn't take too long.

News/release from Netrix
Name: Doom
Version: 1.3.1
Author: id Software, ported by Netrix (Glenn Anderson)
License: Doom Source License
Doom is a first-person shooter released in 1993 by id Software. The shareware WAD (map pack) is included. If you have a registered or retail WAD, you can add it to data/Content. You can put as many official WADs as you can in the folder. You will not lose your save files by deleting Doom.
You can obtain the full version of Doom (Ultimate Doom) as well as the Doom sequels legitimately through Steam. The WAD files should be installed with the game into your Steam directory, where they can be copied in with Doom for Zune HD.
If you happen to have no idea what Doom is, read about it here: Doom (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Update:
-It is now compiled with optimizations, so it runs almost 50% faster.
-The movement has been changed to be like a joystick.
-The media button should be able to be used without any issues now.
Controls:
You can move using touch or tilt. Controls are changable in Options -> Controls. Pressing "Calibrate Tilt" resets the forward/backward tilt to the angle that you have your Zune so that you can play horizontally, vertically, or at some angle in between.
Known issues:
-Sometimes when pressing the media (side) button, Doom might be unable to detect input from the touch screen until it is restarted.
-DRM music and official XNA games/apps are inaccessible after playing. Reboot the Zune to fix this issue.
-If you have a PIN on your Zune and you do not restart after exiting Doom, you will not be able to unlock your Zune until you restart it.
Yet to come:
-Sensitivity adjustment.

42 per cent of all games sold for Xbox 360 motion-sensing add-on Kinect since launch were created by UK developers, new figures from UKIE/GfK Chart Track show.
The best-selling Kinect game by far is Kinect Sports, created by the Microsoft-owned, Twycross-based studio Rare.
Kinectimals, another Kinect launch game, was created by Cambridge-based UK studio Frontier Developments.
The UK accounts for 30 per cent of all PlayStation Move software unit sales since launch, UKIE said.
Meanwhile, UKIE points out that this week's number one game, LittleBigPlanet 2, was created by another UK developer: Guildford's Media Molecule.
Director general Michael Rawlinson said: "The array of strong products that our home-grown, UK talent is producing is something we can all be proud of. This just shows how our UK developer base remains one of the best in the world, and can continue to step up to the plate as the market develops and platforms evolve."

Judgement Silversword is as well-known as a homebrew WonderSwan Color game could be. The Radiant Silvergun tribute was designed for a homebrew competition in 2001, and then published for real by Qute in 2004. Now, it's making a return appearance in the unlikeliest of places: on Xbox 360.
Judgement Silversword and its remixed edition, Cardinal Sins, will be bonuses in Qute's new 360 retail shmup, Eschatos. Both will be faithfully emulated in their original forms -- which means they'll be pretty pixelated and confined to a tiny gameplay window on an HD display.
Check out two trailers for Eschatos (the actual new game on the Eschatos disc) after the break. If it looks cool, be prepared to import it on March 24 -- not many disc-based bullet hell shooters make it outside of Japan.

Homebrew Kinect software just passed the "cool" threshold into "a little scary," making Microsoft's camera device do things we shouldn't reasonably expect out of controllers. We couldn't use our Turbo Touch 360s to generate a 3D model of a stretch of road, complete with buildings and scenery, after all. Not that we ever tried.
Martin Szarski strapped a Kinect sensor to his car, hooked it up to a laptop and Nexus One phone (for location data) and set about creating a "point cloud" of his car's path. Using a phone with a gyroscope to better sense the car's movement, Szarski said, the cloud would appear clearer. But for a 3D space captured by a $150 game controller, it's pretty impressive, no? Imagine this cheap DIY tech in the hands of indie devs, who could create levels by exploring in real life.

News via http://www.team-xecuter.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=60436
After New Dash Update 12625 the following games do not boot (Black Screen):
Black Ops
Modern Warfare 2
Halo Reach
This is an AP2.5 Update so naturally this does not affect non AP2.5 DVD drives (Early Hitachi & Samsung).
If you had LT+ flashed then you will NOT be flagged for a possible ban (good Job c4eva !).
If you did not have LT+ flashed and you tried to boot these games as backups then you are probably flagged for a ban.
AP2.5 Data both PAL and NTSC have been extracted (thanks to c4 and k3) and c4 is now working on the patches and testing will commence.
There will be no need for a firmware update.
We recommend you do not update yet until there is a working method tested and released.
There is no ETA on release so do not ask. if you ask then other members have my permissions to facepalm the offender and ridicule them until they probably start crying.

News via http://majornelson.com/archive/2011/...ent=FeedBurner
On Wednesday, January 19th we will issue a mandatory dashboard update that (re) enables the ‘Boot to Disc’ option in the Xbox 360 dashboard. After you accept the update, you’ll be able to set the option to boot to the Xbox 360 dashboard OR directly to the game you have in the tray when you power up your console. This option can be found in the System Settings.
Additionally, on Thursday January 20th the Xbox.com team will ship an update that contains a small update to the Gamercards. We’ve updated the Gamercard look and feel a bit and removed gamerzone from the card. Other than that, the same amount of information is on the card. Here is an example:
[/QUOTE]
It seems Microsoft also included a new protection to the update - certain backups won't boot anymore (like: Halo Reach, COD Black Ops and COD MW2) on certain drives (probably AP2.5-capable drives). Microsoft might have been able to activate AP2.5 on some older games.
Booting these games on 360 consoles with AP2.5-enabled drives can possibly result in a BAN (certainly if not using the LT+ FW).
If that's indeed the case, SSv3 for these games will have to be released for them to work on LT+.
#fw hello, looking into new dash, more soon.

A new update for Microsoft's Xbox 360 has strengthened the console's anti-piracy measures.
The latest firmware means attempts to play copied versions of Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops and Halo: Reach (and others) are blocked, and transgressors likely flagged for an Xbox Live ban.
This comes as the notorious PlayStation 3 hack is revealed to enable critical exploits in several Call of Duty games on Sony's platforms.
However, Digital Foundry observes that hackers may already have a counter-measure for the Xbox update in place, with a firmware patch of their own that can freeze a console before it is flagged for a ban.

Back in early November, just after Microsoft dropped a new, new Xbox Dashboard on us, the console's ability to load into games at startup -- known as the "boot to disc" option" -- was disabled. Sure, crazy workarounds existed (like, say, moving the cursor to "Play Disc" and hitting the A button), but what if you only have one thumb and limited time?
As promised, the functionality is returning this week. Major Nelson announced as much this morning, noting that, like before, the boot to disc option will be accessible via System Settings on your Xbox's Dash -- users will be given a prompt for said update.
Additionally, this Thursday, an update will be applied to Gamercards on Xbox.com. As pictured to the left, the yellow and light grey of Gamercards past will be replaced by a new black and dark grey color scheme -- we're calling them "Gamercards at Night" -- and they'll lose their "zone information." With any luck, a smoking jacket and pipe will be added in the coming months. A Gamercard's gotta accessorize!

TechieAlizay points out a post at Geekword.net about a man who hacked Microsoft's Kinect to play Max Payne.
"This hack was possible due to FAAST (a toolkit for Kinect), OpenNi/Nite and GlovePIE. Here's how the hacker describes the different control gestures: 'As you can see, the leaning left and right stuff is all there – and moving your body forward and back moves you back and forward. The reload and interact gestures are becoming pretty standard for me now, and pain killers are popped with an upward motion of the left hand. What makes this special though is the leg movements that activate bullet time. The result is bullet time diving for real! When this game hit just after the Matrix film came out, it caused a big stir – with Kinect augmentation it gets even better. The one thing that needs fixing is weapon select; this will be handled by the +/- buttons on the mote in future, I think.'"
Another video shows Kinect controlling Left 4 Dead 2. In addition to future PC support, Microsoft is reportedly working on an official SDK. Yet another recent hack of note allows a human to control a humanoid robot with an impressive level of accuracy. Just be careful if you play the Kinect boxing game; somebody might call the police.

We've seen Wii remote-assisted Kinect FPS controls before, but how about completely controller-free? Now, thanks to one Bill Maxwell, the Kinect-powered, controller-less FPS is a reality -- and with one hand, no less! The claim that it's "better than a mouse" seems debatable, and we didn't notice any strafing (kind of important in FPS games) but it's still very impressive and handily proves the concept.

Activision has revealed that the first downloadable content for the best-selling game of 2010, Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC will arrive on February 1.
The multiplayer pack First Strike contains four maps for the online mode, and will sell for $14.99 (1200 MS points).
While Call of Duty DLC's traditional pricing has elicited grumbling from a number of consumers, it has proved little impediment to success - previous add-ons raised a total of 20 million in sales and $300 million in revenue for Activision.
In something of a coup for Microsoft, First Strike will initially be exclusive to the Xbox version of Black Ops.

We've seen fancy augmented reality projection before, but we've rarely been able to take it home -- now, it seems Microsoft's hack-friendly Kinect can bring the same trick to the consumer realm. Elliot Woods took the idea that Kinect can map a three-dimensional space and twisted it to his own devious ends -- that is, throwing traditional Street Fighter fireball blasts, complete with the sound effect. What's impressive here, though, isn't the size of his hadouken, but rather the light it's made of -- each is a virtual dynamic light source casting light on the room's real objects to create virtual shadows on the surfaces that stick out. Sounds lovely, but if you can't wrap your head around all that, you'll find all the hot fireball action you need in the video after the break at roughly the five minute mark.
