Microsoft is likely to expand support for its Kinect motion controller, with project lead Alex Kipman claiming the camera will be opened up to XNA in time.
"There's no Kinect support through XNA today," he told NPR's Talk Of The Nation podcast, "but that's something that we will support in the future."
XNA allows, in theory, anyone to create Xbox 360 applications, and has been a much-used tool by indie developers.
Kipman also claimed that Microsoft would not be cracking down on the use of open source PC software for Kinect, arguing that these did not constitute 'hacks.'
"Hacking would mean that someone got to our algorithms that sit on the side of the Xbox, and was able to actually use them - which hasn't happened.
"What has happened is that someone wrote an open source driver for PCs that essentially opens the USB connection which we didn't protect by design, and reads the inputs from the sensor."

A report has claimed that Microsoft's Kinect motion control peripheral has endured "a pretty rough start" in Japan following its recent launch.
According to Japanese media retailer Tsutaya the camera-based device is selling around a quarter of the numbers of Sony's PlayStation Move in a country that has proven a tough market to crack for the US hardware manufacturer and publisher.
But according to the latest numbers from Media Create around 1.4 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold in Japan, compared to 5.7 million PlayStation 3 units - which means that sales numbers are roughly equivalent on a like-for-like basis.
The report in Mantan-Web, citing Taketo Matsuo and translated by 1UP, also points to the lack of Kinect titles in the country's top-selling games, and claimed that most people buying the peripheral were existing Xbox 360 users, rather than people new to the platform.
If true that would mean that Microsoft is unlikely to see a spike in console sales, painting a very different picture to Western markets where it's believed that Xbox 360 sales saw a significant upturn when Kinect was launched.
However, although this is a snap-shot of one retailer in Japan, unless Microsoft releases Japan-specific numbers - which it is unlikely to do unless sales are particularly strong - a clear picture of the overall market will be some time in coming.

What a busy day it’s been for the scene We have been working very hard on a number of products these last few months, one in particular that we have been very excited about. You may have read our news the other day that one of of our more popular products had been copied in China. We hear today that another group are releasing a product whose vague description sounded strikingly similar to ours. As this is a cat and mouse business these days we figured that we’d let this particular cat out of the bag and give you a sneak peak at one of the big products we have been working on these last couple of months.
The Xecuter X360 USB PRO – The World’s first ALL 360 DVD to USB Adapter!
As part of the team who are extensively involved in the programming of DVD firmware, we have been able to develop the most stable and solid 360 DVD to USB converter that you could ever possibly wish for. Gone are the days of Sata cards and disabling VIA drivers and messing around with x64 issues. Simply plug in your drive to your USB port and go. Supports all Hitachi, Samsung, Benq & Liteon DVD Drives ! Finally this is now open to all from beginners to hard core enthusiasts.
The prototypes we have been working with are obviously very roughly made – but we are about a week or so away from a final test prototype and production should begin soon. There will also be custom software which is also in development.

What, you didn't think the Kinect open source community would just take a break for the weekend, did you? Microsoft certainly wouldn't want that, and after seeing how much shadow puppetry warmed our hearts, we wouldn't want it either! Thankfully, someone in this world can now track a wooden stick to emulate a lightsaber in real time, bringing one classic meme that much closer to actuality (and the promised Star Wars Kinect game not even parsec closer to release). If that's not enough, we also have a demo made that converts hand-waving to MIDI notes -- which, as creator Ben X notes, puts him one step closer to Ableton Live integration -- and a pretty pretty wild visual of body dysmorphic disorder (and a chubby cat) courtesy of the powerful open source Cinder library and a Vimeo user who goes by "flight404." If those were appetizer and two-part entree, respectively, our post-meal coffee would be a pretty sharp critique on Kinect Joy Ride -- where it seems, on at least one track, you can nab a bronze trophy by staying as still as humanly possible. All the footage you seek is after the break.

November 24th, 2010, 00:59 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's Xbox 360 is half a decade old this week.
While the console has seen a few iterations - most notably the 'slim' S edition this Summer - and several dramatic firmware updates, the console is largely unchanged from the device which launched on November 21, 2005.
As of September, Microsoft had sold 44.6 million Xbox 360s worldwide. It retains the edge over Sony's rival PlayStation 3, although this year saw that gap begin to narrow.
Microsoft has been vocal in its ambition to further extend the console's life cycle with its Kinect motion controller- possibly by as much as five years.
In its early days, the console was dogged by the 'red ring of death' fault, which led to Microsoft introducing a $1 billion extended warranty program.
In recent years, however, the Xbox 360 is perhaps better-known as the home of multiplayer and purchasing platform Live.
"The leap to HD gaming interconnected through LIVE was a pretty watershed moment," enthused Xbox Live boss Stephen Toulouse on his blog yesterday.

Microsoft's Xbox Live service has enjoyed another record breaking month, according to a study carried out by market research firm Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment (FADE).
CVG report that it took $11.2 million in sales last month, up 91 per cent from last October. Year-to-date revenues have now broken the $100 million mark.
The top 10 bestsellers for October worked out like this:
Dead Rising 2: Case Zero (Capcom) - 104,000 Units (400 MS Points)
Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (Sega) - 98,000 Units (1200 MS Points)
Super Meat Boy (Team Meat) - 70,000 Units (800 MS Points)
Comic Jumper (Twisted Pixel) - 55,000 Units (1200 MS Points)
Plants vs. Zombies (PopCap) - 45,000 Units (1200 MS Points)
Limbo (Playdead) - 33,000 Units (1200 MS Points)
Costume Quest (Double Fine) - 31,000 Units (1200 MS Points)
Castle Crashers (The Behemoth) - 28,000 Units (1200 MS Points)
Trials HD (RedLynx) - 26,000 Units (1200 MS Points)
Dead Space Ignition (Sumo Digital) - 26,000 Units (400 MS Points)
The icing on a great 12 months for Xbox Live Arcade then. The service enjoyed its best ever month in July, apparently netting $17.5 million, and the year has seen one great digital release after another, culminating in the phenomenal Pac-Man Championship Edition DX last week.

Willow Garage, the makers of the PR2 robot have been playing with the Kinect. You might be a little tired of seeing every little new project people are doing with it, but there’s something here we couldn’t help but point out. When we posted the video of the guy doing 3d rendering with the Kinect, many of the commenters were speculating on how to get full environments into the computer. Those of you that said, “just use two, facing each other” seem to have been on to something. You can see that they are doing exactly that in the image above. The blue point cloud is one Kinect, the red cloud another. The Willow Garage crew are using this to do telemetry through the PR2 as well as some gestural controls. You can download the Openkinect stack for the Robot Operating System here. Be sure to check out the video after the break to see the PR2 being controlled via the Kinect as well as some nice demonstrations of how the Kinect is seeing the environment.

November 22nd, 2010, 21:06 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has softened its approach to alleged hackers tampering with its Kinect hardware, insisting it had intended users to get creative with its new gadget all along.
Earlier this month, following news that one user had managed to hack into Kinect and get it running on a PC, Microsoft had issued a draconian pledge to "work closely with law enforcement and product safety groups to keep Kinect tamper-resistant."
Speaking to NPR last week, Microsoft's director of incubation Alex Kipman and Microsoft Games Studios' Shannon Loftis clarified what they defined as "hacking" and reined in threats to start throwing law suits around.
"The first thing to talk about is Kinect was not actually hacked," insisted Kipman.
"Hacking would mean that someone got to our algorithms that sit on the side of the Xbox and was able to actually use them, which hasn't happened. Or it means that you put a device between the sensor and the Xbox for means of cheating, which also has not happened.
"That's what we call hacking, and that's why we have put a ton of work and effort to make sure it doesn't actually occur."
"What has happened is someone wrote an open-source driver for PCs that essentially opens the USB connection, which we didn't protect by design, and reads the inputs from the sensor, "he continued.
"The sensor again, as I talked earlier, has eyes and ears and that's a whole bunch of, you know, noise that someone needs to take and turn into signal."
So, Microsoft had always intended Kinect's drivers to be freely accessible? "Yeah. Correct," claimed Kipman.
And nobody is going to get in trouble for utilising them? "Nope. Absolutely not," promised Kipman.
Loftis then explained that Microsoft had actually been looking on with interest at user modifications.
"As an experienced creator, I'm very excited to see that people are so inspired that it was less than a week after the Kinect came out before they had started creating and thinking about what they could do."
So there you have it. First one to create a sentient cybernetic organism wins a cookie.

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...AFOSPZLYPb.php
Node21 (Team XeDev) now released XM360 v2.0d to the public, a tool running on homebrew 360s that will allow to organize, scan and unlock XBLA and DLC content.
What's new/fixed (since last public rls - v2.0a):
* Fixed Server crashing on DLC update (missing data in the marketplace)
* Added Custom FTP command "FREE" which will dump the size/used/free for each mounted device
* Added status line information when remote ftp clients are connected, and transfering
* Found and fixed big bug in xm360server that was preventing all DLC from being recognized.
* Unfortunately, this means that entering the DLC scene in xm360 now takes up to 10 full seconds to process the data.
* Some status messages have moved to a message box (since they disappeared in 2.0b)
* Fixed issue which was causing the xbla_excludes.csv file to not always be written
* Fixed seemingly never ending message boxes that I broke in 2.0c
* Changed format of XBLA and DLC reports to include Utf8, and proper quoting

'uf' released 'Blue Bars' - a script for developers to make it easier to open the 360 kernel/hv binary in IDA Pro:
[QUOTE]
* what it is
an ida pro (5.5 or later) script to make loading xboxkrnl.exe easier.
basically, you just open xboxkrnl.exe as a binary, set to ppc, base 0, load script, sit back and enjoy the show.
you'll end up with an easy to disassemble hv+kern (you know those nasty jump tables? this script patches them to branch immediately.)
problems finding routines? no more! everything's labeled to death!
trouble with those damn different bases? no more, you have both hv and kernel in one ida window, with different bases too
want to add code? press g and enter "EOS_.text"
add data? you know the drill.

[Alex] wrote in to let us know about this Kinect controlled LED wall that was whipped up at the Tetalab hackerspace in Toulouse, France. The wall, which was built earlier in the year, uses some MAX7313 LED intensity controlling shift registers. Each gets its own board and controls the intensity of sixteen different red LEDs. They’re embedded in the wall module and covered with ping-pong balls as diffusers.
The recent activity on the project takes advantage of the Xbox Kinect. As you can see in the video after the break, they’ve used the open source Kinect drivers to capture 3D environment data, processing it into color gradients which are displayed on the Pong wall. Shouldn’t be long before they someone comes knocking on their door to install this in a dance club. We love the effect, especially because it works in a dark room and the LEDs don’t cause any interference with the video capture.

The most common email we get is “how do I learn how to hack things?”. It looks looks like [ladyada] gets that question a lot too. She didn’t waste any time writing up a step by step guide to reverse engineering USB devices, specifically the Kinect.
She goes into depth on how USB works, how to record the communication, what to look for, how to deconstruct what you’ve found, and how to put it all to use. This is all done with real world data from the Kinect so you could easily follow along at home. There is source code available so you can download her example and see how to control the device as well.
We wish every hack could be so well written that it could also be called a tutorial.

It has come to our attention that a small factory in China is making cheap, low quality copies of the hugely popular CK3 Pro 360 DVD Rom connectivity kit. They do say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, however these came through our retail channels due to a high number of faulty returns and there were attempts at having them replaced on the official Xecuter Warranty. Not only are they poor quality, but they are wholesaling them for the same cost at what we are wholesaling the genuine products to our wholesale network, so it’s pointless buying them in the first place.
If you are looking to buy genuine Xecuter products through wholesale channels then simply contact Supreme Factory or China Distribution and they will take care of you. If you are looking for genuine Xecuter retailers then they are listed on our Official Resellers Page.
Remember that when you buy fake copies, even though you are paying the same price as the genuine product you will get no support, and no warranty. If you have bought a fake CK3 Pro or have any questions please use this thread on our forums.
