In our sitdown with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop out atMobile World Congress today, we brought up something that had come up during his press conference and Q&A session last Sunday evening -- that the company's partnership with Microsoft would generate "billions, not millions" of dollars' worth of value. This quickly morphed into an internet-wide story that Microsoft would basically be cutting a ten-figure check to Espoo in exchange for launching devices running its platform, but the reality is that Elop never said anything close to that: in fact, when we specifically asked how the money was flowing and who would be seeing black ink upfront, Elop said on no certain terms that they're not talking specifics of the deal. He goes on to say that it's a "very balanced relationship," which would indicate to us that there wasn't any massive cash transfer to kick this thing off. Regardless, the fact remains: at no time did he say Microsoft was paying to make it happen -- and considering Nokia's needs, we wouldn't be surprised if this was nearly a zero-sum transaction: Microsoft gets a huge boost in the platform's profile along with some services it needs, while Nokia gets a platform that it wasn't able to make itself. Makes sense to us.

[Harishankar] has posted a video on his blog demonstrating the ability to control devices using the Microsoft Kinect sensor via IR. While controlling devices with Kinect is nothing new, he is doing something a little different than you have seen before. The Kinect directly interfaces with his Mac Mini and tracks his movements via OpenNI. These movements are then compared to a list of predefined gestures, which have been mapped to specific IR functions for controlling his home theater.
Once the gestures have been acknowledged, they are then relayed from the Mac via a USB-UIRT to various home theater components. While there are not a lot of details fleshed out in the blog post, [Harishankar] says he will gladly forward his code to you if you request it via email.

Microsoft had a sit down with the first people to jailbreak their Windows Phone 7. Seems like good progress was made. This seems like a good approach to me. It would be great if Sony, Apple, Microsoft, and several Android phone makers would implement a simple development switch in their phones — these would obviously void the warranty, but it would give hackers the opportunity to actually own their devices without fear of having to jailbreak all over again whenever an update arrives.http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/02...7-Jailbreakers

We've just barely begun to get ready with Steve Ballmer's keynote at MWC 2011, yet the company's Twitter and press feeds just scooped its main man. It's confirmed that Windows Phone 7 is getting multitasking for third-party apps and a suite of other updates, including Twitter integration and IE9 Mobile. We're still waiting on details on the multitasking, but the company has confirmed a "new wave of multitasking applications" in this next release, though hopefully that means open to all.
Twitter will be integrated into the People Hub, so you can get your real-time "what's for dinner" updates right there. And, of course, Microsoft confirmed IE9 is coming. It'll deliver a "dramatically enhanced web browser experience" thanks to graphics and hardware acceleration that'll make the most of what your handset has to offer. Sounds tasty to us. We're told to expect the update in "early March," which isn't that far away at all.

Want to know how the eventual, inevitable implementation of app multitasking on Windows Phone 7 will look? Wonder no longer: it's cards, which seems to be the way a lot of guys are going after webOS showed how to do it right a couple years back, and it looks hot. To see this in action on WP7, simply hold the back button and you'll get a card-like view of all running apps. Pick your app and you're back where you left off in that one. You can multitask even in games, have Slacker playing in the background, and if you press a volume button while on the home screen you'll get a quickie interface for changing track, pausing, and playing.
Microsoft indicated it didn't previously allow for third-party multitasking due to battery life concerns, but those concerns have been mitigated -- somehow. We're not sure of the API-level details that's letting all this magic happen, but we'll look for those later. All we know right know is that it looks great and we can't wait to try it out for ourselves.

Though it's billed strictly as a technology demo -- not something we'll necessarily see in any imminent over-the-air update -- Microsoft showed off a pretty cool demo of how Windows Phone 7's Xbox Liveintegration could take advantage of Kinect down the road at Steve Ballmer's MWC keynote today. How, you ask? Using the Rally Ball game, a Windows Phone user was shown tossing balls to an on-screen character that's controlled by someone else on an Xbox using a Kinect. Simple, yes -- but perhaps as interesting as the Kinect aspect is the viability of real-time cross-platform gaming that Microsoft seems to be throwing its support behind. Seems like a good way to torture your friends into working out from thousands of miles away, doesn't it?

The first open source prototype of a tangible table using the Microsoft Kinect sensor. The hack is essentially a proof of concept that can serve a multitude of purposes including a real-time analysis on urban models. The program uses the Kinect point cloud which is mapped onto a flat surface. The upper layer of the point cloud will apply a colour to anything that is placed on the table and is recognized by the Kinect depth sensor. Every object that is placed on the table is detected automatically and in turn becomes trackablehttp://hardware.slashdot.org/story/1...able-Prototype

Newly released for the Xbox 360:
Is your old Hitachi/Samsung/Benq System on its last legs ? Overheating and Freezing Issues ? 2 x Red Lights Crashing Your System ? THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION IS HERE !!!!!!
The Xecuter xDrive Plus (inc xFan) is the next level in Xbox 360 cooling, stability and easy external firmware upgrading. The famous Team Xecuter have once again developed a solution to a very common problem on the older Xbox 360 consoles - the dreaded 2 x Red Lights and Overheating / Game Freezing issues.
Using the same technology as used on the original xDrive, you now have the ability to remove your internal 360 DVD ROM and have it connected to your 360 externally. The space where your internal DVD used to be is then replaced by an entire cooling system - as this is one of the main sources of heat inside the Xbox and it resides directly over the GPU (which is the main causes of overheating issues / game freezing / graphics corruption / rrod) - this now gives your Xbox a drop in temperature that is unprecedented in any of the cooling kits or fans that have ever been released before. In tests the GPU alone dropped as much as 20 Degrees Celsius with the xFan enabled !!! The entire system is completely custom designed from the ground up. It has been extensively tested by many users on the Xecuter forums and has shown to be a resounding success. One user reported that his console would give 2 Red Lights (Over heated) after 5 minutes even with the RROD Repair Kit installed and also with a Whisper Legacy Fan. When he installed the xDrive Plus and xFan - he tested the system overnight and finally turned it off manually after it had been running game demos for 20 hours straight !!! AMAZING RESULTS !!!
As a bonus your 360 DVD drive is now completely external to your Xbox so you can simply connected the xDrive to a CK3 and SATA cable and update your firmware (There is a CK3 port and SATA port built in to the read of the xDrive for your convenience). It's a very simple case of Plug 'n Play.
Huge changes in temperature when the xFan is activated !!!
Features:
•Bring your dead, overheated Xbox 360 back to life !
•Extend the life of your Xbox and avoid RROD's !
•Replace your internal DVD drive with an all new cooling system
•Easy to install
•Ergonomically designed to match the Xbox 360
•Chrome Eject Tray and Button Bezel for the console
•Chrome DVD Tray Bezel For the 360 DVD ROM
•Supports the fitting of all Hitachi, Samsung, Benq & Liteon DVD Drives.
•Easy external upgrade of xDrive 360 using the CK3 Pro or CK3 Lite (Not Included)
•Extend the life of your Xbox 360
•This version has GREEN LED's
•Includes FREE Xecuter Unlock Kit V2
•Once installed never have to open Xbox 360 again
•xFan Upgrade available separately for current xDrive users
•Trusted Xecuter Design & Quality
•Complete Installation Instructions

Being able to send gestural data captured from your Kinect to another device via your computer of IR is incredible. You can send gesture recognition data to any piece of hardware that uses IR signals, such as your television, receiver, cable box or X10 extenders. Anything that reads IR signals can now be controlled by simply using gestures to control the devices. Absolutely amazing. The developer wrote custom code that works with his Kinect sensor plugged into his Mac Mini. The code is integrated with OpenNI which detects the user's skeleton and has specific gestures pre-programmed to control his TV in order to turn it off and on along with changing the volume on his digital receiver. Other gestures include the ability to change to the next and previous channelhttp://hardware.slashdot.org/story/1...-Over-Infrared

How many people actually own a Zune, anyway heres a great new homebrew release for the Zune via coder Malkierian
Alright, folks, it's pretty much all finished up. This is the release thread, and version is now 1.0!
New with the release: Keyboard functionality now in-game! Go to the Keyboard Entry Wiki Page on Google Code to find out details (and also see explanations for the other keyboards).
Destruct is likely going to fall by the wayside, as there would be too much overhaul to it to make it worth it (I might as well rework it from the top-down, starting with the original OpenTyrian source code, which I'm not likely to do).
So, from now on, it's bugfixes only (which there should be relatively few of), and perhaps upstream updates from OpenTyrian. Unless someone has just such a fantastic idea that I have to implement it.
Grab it here: OpenTyrianHD 1.0 - Project hosting on Google Code
P.S. I would love for someone to post a gameplay video...
----------------------------------------------------------------
Controls: (this is an actual screenshot, by the way).
The big black square over to the left is the trackpad. It is 208x210 in size, a wonderfully big bit (as big as I could get it ).
Each button (except the keyboard and menu buttons) are 90x90. Those other two are 90x40 (so you don't accidentally hit them while trying to use the trackpad).
----------------------------------------------------------------
From OpenTyrian Gcode site:
OpenTyrian is a port of the DOS shoot-em-up Tyrian. Jason Emery generously gave the OpenTyrian developers a copy of the Tyrian 2.1 source code, which has since been ported from Turbo Pascal to C. The port uses SDL, making it easily cross-platform.
Tyrian is an arcade-style vertical scrolling shooter. The story is set in 20,031 where you play as Trent Hawkins, a skilled fighter-pilot employed to fight Microsol and save the galaxy.

Microsoft and Nokia have entered a "broad strategic partnership" under which the phone maker will adopt Windows Phone as its "principal smartphone strategy," the two companies announced today. While Nokia didn't highlight Xbox Live in its roll call of some of the broader terms of the deal, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer -- with a bit of a practiced grin -- did namedrop the cross-platform gaming service in a .
"In this partnership with Nokia," Ballmer concisely summed up, "Microsoft brings its Windows Phone software and the brands that mobile consumers want, like Bing, Office and, of course, Xbox Live."

It's not the first time that a Kinect hack has incorporated a Wiimote, but this demonstration from YouTube user Kick755 is certainly one of the more impressive examples to date -- even if it's still not quite ready to fully replace a controller. As with similar hacks, this one relies on the FAAST emulator for the Kinect end of the equation and GlovePIE for the Wiimote, but it has one notable feature that the others lack: the ability to quite literally stomp on your enemies in Dead Space 2. See for yourself after the break.

Says company "doesn't spend a lot of time thinking about converting the Call of Duty experience to a subscription model"
With an air of mystery still surrounding Activision's new Call of Duty studio 'Project Beachhead' and its long-term roadmap for the shooting franchise, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has played down the possibility of a subscription-based extension to the brand.
"You know, honestly, we don't really spend a lot of time thinking about how do you convert this Call of Duty experience to a subscription model," Kotick told CNBC.
"What we really spend time thinking about is how do you create really compelling Call of Duty experiences that are going to delight our audiences, and usually people are willing to pay for the content if you deliver them something spectacular? Which is out intention."
On Wednesday Activision announced an online-only addition to the Call of Duty universethat will be free-to-play and "bring online experiences and console play together for the first time".
Back in June 2010 The Wall Street Journal asked Kotick “if you could snap your fingers, and instantly make one change in your company what would it be?”.
His answer?
“I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow. When you think about what the audience's interests are and how you could really satisfy bigger audiences with more inspired, creative opportunities, I would love to see us have an online Call of Duty world. I think our players would just have so much of a more compelling experience.”
“I think our audiences are clamouring for it. I think we could do a lot more to really satisfy the interests of the customers. I think we could create so many things, and make the game even more fun to play."

February 9th, 2011, 23:09 Posted By: wraggster
After a slow start, Sony's PlayStation 3 has closed the gap on Microsoft's Xbox 360 - global PS3 sales are 47.9 million and Xbox 360 sales 50 million.
Agonisingly close, but what will it mean if Sony overtakes Microsoft? Are we tantalisingly close to declaring a winner?
"A winner was declared over a year ago, the Nintendo Wii," retorted EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich to Eurogamer.
"But if we are talking about the PS3 vs. Xbox 360, it wouldn't be appropriate to declare anyone the winner.
"Both have an incredibly active install base, both are delivering large profit potential to the third-party, and both have a long life ahead of them.
"I believe that five years from now, when all the numbers are in, both Microsoft and Sony will still be arguing the results," Divnich prophesied. "One will claim they sold more hardware, the other more software. One will claim more registered online accounts, the other more active online accounts. It is a debate that will frankly never be settled."
The Xbox 360 launched at the end of 2005; the PS3 roughly a year later (Europe had to wait until March 2007). Xbox 360 had a clear early lead, but following the launch of the PS3 Slim in 2009, Sony's numbers revved. Kinect has bolstered Xbox 360's Christmas and early 2011 sales, but whether Microsoft can stave off PS3 looks increasingly unlikely.
"I certainly don't care who wins," declared Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter to Eurogamer.
"PS3 appears to have made a lot of headway in regions where Microsoft hasn't [Sony's] outsold Xbox 360 by 4.5 million in Japan and are about even in Europe - but they are almost 10 million behind in the US."
"My guess," he said, "is that [Sony] continues to outpace Microsoft in Asia, the Middle-East and Africa; continue to track relatively even in Europe, and probably continue to lag slightly (within one million) annually in the US. The two consoles should end up around even in a couple of years."
Billy Pidgeon, M2 Research analyst, reckoned "Sony is likely to maintain market dominance in these regions [EMEA] while working toward closing the gap in North America". And while Pidgeon noted the Kinect-powered Xbox 360 upsurge, he also said "PS3's brisk sales are somewhat more significant, as Xbox 360 has hit saturation points in North America while Sony is still building in".
With this generation shaping to last longer than those before it, the battle between Sony and Microsoft will rage for years. Exactly how long we don't know; Sony's stuck firmly to a 10-year vision for PlayStation 3, and Microsoft has warbled on about Xbox 360 only being mid-way through its life.
But, of course, it's Nintendo that leads the seventh generation of consoles with 84.6 million Wii sales.
Nevertheless, the feud between Microsoft and Sony spells only good things for you and I.
"As long as there is a battle there will be good things in store for consumers," asserted Pachter. "We've had at least a dozen models of PS3 and 360 combined, and it is likely that more models are coming.
"We haven't seen the level of price cuts that we expected, so there is room for both consoles to come down another $150 in price over time.
"That's the biggest lever left for Sony and Microsoft, and I expect each to strive to finish ahead of the other. The first one to cut price is the one who cares about winning more."
With those price cuts comes "a better opportunity to increase the base of console gaming" around the world, Pidgeon said.
Numerous developers spoke out recently about the onset of new consoles, not that any have been announced - not even a Wii 2, despite our best efforts to predict unveilings each summer at E3.
THQ core games boss Danny Bilson said a new generation now would be "horrible", and Irrational Games creative star Ken Levine has "no desire" for new machines. Why should they want new consoles? They have efficient and established engines and tools to use to build their games. This latter half of the generation could be a period of creative flourish.
Those tools help multi-platform games be barely distinguishable on PS3 and 360. The next big battle, said Pidgeon, will be fought between PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.
"Online session frequency and length on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network are more important factors this cycle," said Pidgeon. "Where gamers play more online, sales of third-party software for that platform will increase.
"Xbox Live has been dominating online gameplay but PSN is gaining ground steadily, and Microsoft should not take the online lead for granted.
"Neither should Sony neglect to push for steep growth in PSN usage."
The gap between the two online services has noticeably closed. PlayStation Home wasn't the be-all-and-end-all as Sony had forecast, but it's a stable and impressive achievement now nonetheless. Sony also now has a subscription service for PSN called PlayStation Plus, although everyone with a PS3 can play online-enabled games free of charge, unlike on Xbox 360. The amount of content added to PSN has also rocketed up. Today's PlayStation Store update is perhaps the busiest we've ever seen it.

February 9th, 2011, 22:41 Posted By: wraggster
European retailer GAME has announced that it has inked a partnership with Microsoft that will see it sell digital content from Xbox Live to customers in stores.
The content includes downloadable games and other extras and will be sold individually as cards - as opposed to generic points - and is available now in 40 stores across the UK as part of a trial, with prices starting at £2.04.
"Our teams will be selling digital Xbox Live games alongside the consoles, packaged games and accessories that have been the foundation of our stores for the last 20 years," GAME Group commercial strategy director Tricia Brennan told GamesIndustry.biz. "Last year we boosted our range with other digital cards including iTunes, Zynga and Facebook credits, and this year we look forward to giving customers even more to choose from."
And Neil Thompson, Microsoft's GM for retail sales and marketing in the UK and Ireland, added in a statement: "We're excited to offer this program to UK consumers as we see this as an innovative opportunity to work with GAME in delivering Xbox 360 owners yet another highly attractive choice at retail."
The move comes as retailers seek new ways of participating in otherwise unattainable digital revenues, while Microsoft will hope to bring greater awareness of its Xbox Live content to GAME's in-store shoppers - at price points that may encourage more impulse purchases.
