We couldn't have been more excited at the though of Kinect recognizing even more of our moving parts, but it appears that rumors of a Kinect update said to improve the camera's resolution and observatory fidelity were incorrect. "We're constantly working to expand and improve on experiences for Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE" an Xbox rep told CVG. "However, this rumour is completely unsubstantiated."
So, while Microsoft will (of course) continue supporting the peripheral in many ways, an update that would specifically improve the accuracy of Kinect's sensor doesn't appear to be in the cards. We'll have to keep looking to unofficial hacks for new Kinect functionality -- at least for now.

It was only a matter of time before Microsoft's continually-hacked Kinect became embroiled in a VR simulation of some sort, and while we're not riding light cycles quite yet, enterprising developer Nao_u has managed to put himself in the shoes (and short skirt) of a Japanese virtual pop icon. Mapping his every move onto the virtual skeleton of Vocaloid's Miku Hatsune probably won't impress you much at this stage of the game, but there's the little matter of what Nao_u did next: he hooked up a pair of Vuzix VR920 LCD glasses to see through the digital diva's eyes, too. Find the terribly cutesy video after the break, and fast-forward to 4:30 to watch Nao attempt to walk a narrow beam set atop a virtual skyscraper.

The US International Trade Commission, which is increasingly popular as a patent enforcement agency, voted to investigate a complaint filed by Motorola against Microsoft last month. Motorola claims that the Xbox infringes five of its patents. In October, Microsoft complained against Motorola, alleging patent infringement by its Android-based smartphones. Apple, Nokia and HTC are also involved with ITC investigations as complainants and respondents. A new one-page overview document shows the ongoing ITC investigations related to smartphones and the products that the complainants would like to have banned from entry into the US market. The good news is that any import bans won't be ordered until long after Christmas. The ITC is faster than courts, but not that fast.

At this point, we all have a serious question to ask: is there anything the Kinect can't do? While Microsoft has managed to move quite a few of the camera-laden tubes, a good amount of 'em have been put to use in applications not named gaming. Take the Virtopsy Project, for instance. This particular setup uses the Kinect camera bar to control a PACS system (OsiriX, in this case), and it relies on software based on "ofxKinect, libfreenect and open frameworks." That's a lot of technobabble for sure, but as they say, the proof is in the YouTube video. Ever dreamed of swirling medical images around with hand gestures? Head on down and mash play -- fantasyland awaits.

Microsoft has refuted rumours suggesting that it is to release a Firmware update for Kinect that will "quadruple" the accuracy of the sensor.
The platform holder told CVG this afternoon that the news - which came from an unnamed source speaking to EuroGamer - was "completely unsubstantiated".
The rumours suggested that a downloadable Xbox Live update would increase Kinect's 320x240 resolution limit to 640x480 - allowing it to detect finger movement and hand rotation.
However, an MS spokesperson told CVG: "We're constantly working to expand and improve on experiences for Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE, however, this rumour is completely unsubstantiated.
"We couldn't be more pleased with the fidelity of the technology and clearly consumers agree given we sold more than 2.5 million units around the world in the first 25 days Kinect was on the market."

In the US, brand Xbox is the clear winner in the battle of the high definition consoles. But globally, PlayStation has an insurmountable lead.
That's the verdict of one of the biggest game publishers in the world: Electronic Arts.
"Honestly, I think that Microsoft has done great work the last couple of years, and they've made a lot of smart moves: hitting pricing when they needed to, the right combination of hitting price points and disk drive sizes that allow them to hit price points that matter, and they've done a great job with Xbox Live," EA boss John Riccitiello told Industry Gamers.
"At the same time, the Xbox brand, the Microsoft brand, doesn't carry anywhere near as much sway as the Sony and PlayStation brand do outside the United States, and so I think the reality is the international marketplace is just so important and it's a natural advantage that no matter how good Microsoft is at growing their business, Sony has an almost-impossible-to-supersede head start."
While Microsoft currently enjoys a lead of a few million in the home console installed base battle - Sony had sold 41.6 million PlayStation 3 consoles as of 30th September 2010, Microsoft 44.6 million Xbox 360s – analysts predict the PS3 will overtake the Xbox 360 in 2011.
According to Riccitiello, the PS3's success is down to improved marketing and a better online offering.
"In the last couple of years, Sony's sharpened their marketing message, you know, 'the platform with everything.' Riccitiello continued. "They've actually gotten past simply Home as an online connected system for them. While I'm not sure that one would compare them in depth and breadth and features and support to what you have at Xbox Live, it's good now."
Ultimately, however, Riccitiello believes both Microsoft and Sony deserve credit for launching successful consoles.
"We have a similar share on both platforms. It's not that I wouldn't want to criticize one of the other; I'm not shy. I just think they've actually both done a pretty good job.
"The big disadvantage Sony carries is they have an expensive platform because of Blu-ray, so they have a harder time hitting price points. Microsoft has taken advantage of that and their online service, which really is the gold standard. Sony has [leveraged] their limited amount of unique content really well.
"They've done a nice job promoting the Blu-ray, their advertising and marketing campaigns have been stronger, and they've done a nice job of supporting some EA content to their own advantage. I don't know that you'd point to either of them and say they can't shoot straight or that they've given it up."

It seems so obvious: Using Kinect to help people learn American Sign Language. That's exactly what researchers at Georgia Tech College of Computing are working on, pairing Microsoft's oft-hacked motion sensing camera with custom software that previously required colored gloves kitted with wrist-mounted, 3-axis accelerometers. On a series of increasingly difficult tests, the software returned results with 100% accuracy, 99.98% accuracy, and 98.8% accuracy.
These promising results mean the team will be working on updates including a larger vocabulary which necessitates the need of "hand shape features." The initial proof-of-concept demo launched with a small vocabulary that excluded them in favor of broader gestural movements with the arms and body. We imagine that reported fourfold increase in Kinect image resolution would have a major benefit here, should Microsoft ever release it.

UC Davis's Oliver Kreylos has been responsible for two of our most impressive Kinect hacks yet. He was one of the first to get proper 3D video out of the thing, following that up by pairing up two of the cameras, one to fill in the gaps of the other. You might have thought he was just playing around but no -- oh no. There was a method to the madness and his ulterior motive has been revealed: 3D telepresence. This is what he's been working on all along and he has an early version operational, using the output from two Kinects in a remote office to beam a 3D representation of another person to his display, which he can navigate around (and through) using a Wiimote. Meanwhile, the viewer can see the position of Oliver in real-time, a virtual camera floating around and enabling them to maintain eye contact despite her not actually looking at either physical camera. That demonstration is embedded after the break along with a somewhat fanciful follow-up in which Kreylos engages in a rather... protracted lightsaber battle against the forces of evil.

Microsoft's Kinect team is reportedly working "very hard" to potentially quadruple the accuracy of Kinect.
The platform holder hopes that the motion-sensing peripheral will soon be able to detect finger movement and hand rotation, according to Eurogamer.
The depth sensor used by Kinect is currently set at a 30 frames per second limit and a 320x240 resolution limit, but a firmware update could boost the resolution to 640x480, the site suggests.
Microsoft has not confirmed the accuracy of the report.
Last month, Sony Move engineer Anton Mikhailov claimed the fast-selling Kinect is 'mostly technical problems'.

The first downloadable content for Call of Duty: Black Ops - just announced as the UK's Christmas number one title - will be released for the Xbox 360 on 1 February 2011 at a price of $15, according to Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb.
Speaking in his most recent podcast, Hryb described the download as a multiplayer map pack, with four normal multiplayer maps and an additional stage for the game's co-operative Zombies mode.
Two of the standard multiplayer maps will be based on locations from the single-player campaign: Hong Kong and the Arctic Circle. The other two will be all new locations; one based around the Berlin Wall and the other an ice hockey stadium - the latter apparently a reference to the ice hockey semi-final between the U.S. and USSR during the 1980 Winter Olympics.
Microsoft has an agreement lasting till 2012, that will see all downloadable content for Black Ops released first on Xbox 360. Traditionally the downloads for Call Of Duty have been limited purely to additional multiplayer map packs, but Activision has hinted that the extras for Black Ops may include more varied content.
Although the point has never been clarified it is assumed that the same downloadable content will also be released for the PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the game, likely around a month after the Xbox 360.

Microsoft is working to improve the accuracy of Xbox 360 motion-sensing add-on Kinect so that it could detect finger movement and hand rotation, Eurogamer understands.
Microsoft's Kinect team is said to be working "very hard" on a switching or compression technology that will allow a greater amount of data to pass through Kinect to the Xbox 360 console.
Kinect features are dictated by firmware so that they can be added and upgraded over time.
The depth sensor used by Kinect is also dictated by firmware – it is currently set at a 30 frames per second limit and a 320x240 resolution limit.
At a 640x480 resolution, however, Kinect could begin to detect fingers and hand rotation – an effective quadrupling of its accuracy.
The issue relates to the USB controller interface, Eurogamer was told. It is capable of around 35MB/s, but it only uses around 15/16MB/s.
This artificial limit is in place because multiple USB devices can be used at once on an Xbox 360. But Microsoft is working on a technology to allow greater throughput in this regard, Eurogamer understands.
If Microsoft achieves its goal it could double the spec of Kinect's depth camera with a simple dashboard update.
Microsoft had not responded to Eurogamer's request for comment before publication, but Digital Foundry's Rich Leadbetter described the potential accuracy improvement as "eminently doable".
Microsoft would need to "disable or lower throughput of game installs running from USB flash drives to free up additional bandwidth," Leadbetter said.
"All eminently doable though bearing in mind that Kinect 'only' needs 20MB/s for full res from both cameras.
"The resolution coming out of the depth camera via PC is indeed 640x480, but it is uncertain just how accurate the camera's sensor is.
"Additionally, processing four times as many depth pixels could slow things down more."
Last month Anton Mikhailov, a software engineer at Sony Computer Entertainment America's research and development department, told Eurogamer Sony turned down Kinect's 3D camera because of the limitations of the tech.
"In reality, the 3D cameras we surveyed and what Kinect ended up using, they're 320x240 resolution, so when you're talking about tracking fingers, or even tracking things like the rotations of your hand, you're working with 10x10 pixels," Mikhailov said.
"It's very hard to get anything useful out of it."
Mikhailov doubted Kinect's capacity to create a decent Star Wars game "because there are so many ambiguities, and it's nearly impossible to track the angles of your wrists".
If Microsoft's achieves its goal of improving Kinect's accuracy, however, Mikhailov could be proved wrong.

The new Xbox 360 Slim doesn't have replaceable faceplate, so whatever happened to those faceplate accessories that people bought to spice up their Xbox 360 and make it unique?
Our interview with Albert Penello in the latest issue of OXM's Five Years Of Xbox 360 feature includes a look back at the misjudged faceplate accessory.
"We don't ever create an accessory with the intent of having it fail", Penello says. "The idea wasn't bad... people used to put faceplates on their cell phones. Rewind five years, faceplates were what everybody wanted to do."
The Xbox 360 S, which was revealed at E3 this year, doesn't use faceplates and new official faceplates haven't been released for years. It "turned out nobody bought it. So [we stopped] making them. We killed that one pretty quickly".
Did you buy any faceplates?

Hey, you know that Kinect thing that Microsoft recently launched and hasn't been heard of since? Well, it's such a boring and useless creation that somebody had to try and spruce it up. Enter DS Styles, with a bag of 5,000 Swarovski crystals and the courage to use them. The result of that coupling has been the (quite literally) unmissable concoction you see above -- a Kinect that will blind you first, then record your clumsy reaction for posterity second. And it only costs $632, what a steal!

C4E released a new version of the iXtreme LT+ modified FW for ("phat") LiteOn (74850, 83850V1, 83850V2, 93450) and BenQ DVD-drives.
What's new/fixed:
- xbox 1 backup support (iXtreme compatible, DVD9 only)
- improved pfi support
There's also some WIP news about the LT+ FW for Hitachi-LG drives on team-xecuter.com:
[QUOTE]
Plus after much work and heavy testing, C4E has finished the LT+ for Hitachi 78 and 79 and it is confirmed that they now boot AP25 backups ! We are currently testing and hope to announce the official release shortly. There are also plans to make LT firmware for the older Hitachi drives but without Ap25 as it’s not required. LT+ for Slims is the priority at the moment. FYI iXtreme 1.51 still works just fine with AP25 (many are still using the older Hitachi’s on XBL – however we can’t guarantee that it is XBL safe so use at your own risk).

SEGA plans to release a Dreamcast Collection "soon".
Confirmation comes from SEGA's executive vice president of sales and marketing Alan Pritchard, who told the January issue of Game Informer magazine that the publisher plans to bring some of its old Dreamcast games to market digitally and packaged.
"The Dreamcast fans are very devoted," he said. "You see on eBay people are still buying the games and system. We actually have a Dreamcast collection coming out soon. We are looking to bring some of the old Dreamcast games to market digitally and packaged. The titles are still to be announced. The Ultimate Genesis Collection did huge numbers on PS3 and 360, so it's an important part of our business. We've already been releasing some Dreamcast games digitally; Crazy Taxi [for one]."
In November US shop GameStop published a listing for a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title called Dreamcast Collection. The listing was subsequently pulled.
It did not offer any details about the collection, but it did mention a possibly placeholder release date of 15th February 2011 and a price point of $29.99. Which games would you like to see included?
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Game Informer interview, Pritchard responded to a question about a possible Dreamcast 2. This is what he said in response: "Unless there's something I don't know – no one has told me about getting back into the console business."
For shame.
