In this week's mailbox we delved into the archives and found a letter that is sure to resonate with a few people out there.
Xbox World 360 reader Mark Montgomery runs into a few problems online due to colour blindness and asks if Microsoft could do more to accommodate colour blind gamers
Don't forget, to be in with a chance of having your letter featured on CVG's Mailbox, drop us a line.
I was bought an Xbox 360 Elite for Christmas and I am now officially a 'gamer'. (I was a mere button tapper before but this console has given me a promotion!) The games look simply incredible - especially COD4, Halo 3, Bioshock and Gears of War.
However, being colour blind I am having a few problems on Call of Duty 4. It's really tough to tell whether I'm blending in or not, while picking out Tangos has also become a little bit of a chore.
However, the major problem is on Xbox Live. The Gamertags of all the players are either green if they are on your team, or red if they are an enemy. Fine, yeah? Unless you can't distinguish the two colours, that is.
This makes playing near-impossible at times. For instance, I took up position next to a soldier in a window because he had a sweet spot overlooking the street - only for him to show me the wrong end of his bayonet. Turned out he was a bad guy!
Red/green colour blindness is common and I'm sure I'm not alone, but maybe we could get some kind of downloadable patch to change the colours to something a bit more user friendly for peeps like myself.
Also, it'd be interesting to see if anyone else is having problems like this and which games are affected. Colour blind gamers of the world unite!
XBW says: Hmm, tricky little problem that Mark, and though we have the greatest sympathy for your plight the long and short of it is that you've got little chance of seeing a fix any time soon, beyond hiring someone to shout out the colours as you play.
CVG says:We understand this is a big issue and hope that Microsoft is paying attention, there's more than enough people being vocal about it online.
It doesn't help that XBLA puzzle games such as Peggle and Chime have become so popular. We can't think of a reason for why this might be a problem for Microsoft. Keep e-mailing them and hopefully they'll get the message.
Also we'd like to apologise for using Microsoft's new greytroller as the image for this feature. It just makes sense.

UK Xbox 360 owners spend an average of £64 a month on games, Microsoft has declared.
And 13 per cent spend over £100.
That's according to a survey carried out by Microsoft's advertising branch, reported on MCV. Canvassed were 251 Xbox 360 gamers aged between 25 and 34 years-old, and most revealed hardcore gaming habits. What a happy coincidence.
Of that 251-person sample, 83 per cent play Xbox 360 games three to four days a week. And nearly half (41 per cent), play games every day for three or four hours.
The majority preferred shooters, then racers, then RPGs.
With such a lot of time spent gaming, could their spending habits be classed as disproportionately high?
Microsoft's chief advertisement researcher used the survey to conclude that gamers are "an attractive proposition for marketers".

As promised here is the professional version of the CK3 Probe 3. Speaks for itself. The easiest, safest, most flexible “PMT” no-cut/no-solder probe for Liteon drives.
No capacitors, no discharging, no power clips, enhanced extraction code built into X360USB and Jungle Flasher to give instant key extraction with no need for prolonged probing of the PCB or timing your power cycles or any other waiting around or messing about.
Also tested working with the Samsung Bad Flash Recovery Method (mostly not required with X360USB Pro as it will recover 99% of Samsung recovery / Bad Flash situations – but its a working backup all the same)
We have also designed the CK3 Power Cable so that it can be used to convert any CK3 probe (v1 / v2 / v2.1 / Mini probe) to a fully functional PMT capable probe. Naturally the cable is a lot cheap than buying a Probe 3 so YOU save money !
It’s this simple (Connect using X360USB PRO & Jungle Flasher of course):
1. Press the PhatKey button, then click Yes
2. Hold Probe 3 Button down (LED OFF), connect probe to MPX01, release Probe 3 Button (LED ON)
3. Extract Complete will be instantaneous when using X360USB PRO, now remove probe from MPx01
4. Press and release the Probe 3 button again then click OK
5. Done!

The Microsoft Kinect is one of the hottest gaming peripherals we've seen in years, and that's because it can do a lot more than control games.
Within weeks after the Kinect hit stores, scientists, programmers and researchers hacked away at the device. It turns out that the Kinect, which consists of cameras and an infrared-light sensor to track and follow your body movement, has applications for medical purposes, language learning and even partying outdoors. Those applications are enabled by a relatively open programming interface which lets people quickly hack together their own custom software to interface with the Kinect hardware.
None of these hacks are officially supported by Microsoft, but they demonstrate the amazing potential of turning the human body into an interface controller. Who'da thunk a gaming gadget would be so powerful?
What follows are some examples of the coolest Kinect hacks we've seen..

[Adrian] has a friend that, due to an accident, can no longer play Xbox games in the standard fashion. His friend is unfortunately unable to hold the game pad properly, and no longer has the manual dexterity to reach the shoulder buttons and triggers on the top side of his Xbox 360 controller. Being the good guy that he is, he set out to see what he could do in order to bring the joy of playing Xbox back into his friend’s life.
Inspired by the many different gaming mods he has seen [Ben Heck] construct, he pulled apart an Xbox 360 wireless controller and began to investigate how the four top buttons were activated. In no time, he had four large buttons wired to the PCB where the triggers and shoulder buttons once connected.
[Adrian] mentions that his modification isn’t quite complete, as he is going to mount the buttons into a board which can easily be laid on his friend’s lap or a table. The only thing we are left wondering is whether or not he was able to replicate the analog functionality of the triggers, or if they are treated as simple on/off switches. Either way, we are sure his friend will be thrilled!

After much brouhaha and rigmarole, Microsoft appears to be back on track with its inaugural Windows Phone 7 software update. An update thatwasn't actually supposed to do anything but prepare that first wave of WP7 devices for their first real update but, ironically, left about 10 percent of WP7 owners with issues including some precision-built Samsung paperweights. Last night Microsoft issued an update on the matter saying that the February update for Samsung handsets has been fixed, resuming its rolling release schedule. Great, with this hopefully behind us, maybe we can now focus on the first real update scheduled for "early March" that will finally check off the platform's infamous lack of copy 'n paste on the road to multitasking, Twitter integration, and a vastly improved IE9 browser later in the year.

It's official: a Battle: Los Angeles game is on the way to release a month after the motion picture of the same name, confirms publisher Konami.
The Battle: Los Angeles movie - yet another alien invasion plot - hits US cinema screens on March 11, while the game's due to arrive "next month" for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC via Steam and "select distribution channels", confirming rumours last week sparked by leaky rating boards.
You will "assume the role of Corporal Lee Imlay and fight alongside characters from the film and defend the city of Los Angeles from attacks from unknown forces," says the blurb.
Developed by TimeShift developer Saber Interactive, BLA is an first-person shooter with a single-player campaign the follows the events of the film. "Players will battle unique and varied enemies, using an arsenal of weapons throughout the game like an assault rifle, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, frag grenades, and a turret gun as they navigate the streets of Los Angeles avoiding fierce and relentless attacks," says Konami, who's publishing the title.
"Aside from high-caliber fire fighting combat, destructible environments have been included using the Havok Destruction Module, which will allow players to destroy scaffolding structures, vehicles and overpasses to eliminate enemy forces."
No screens yet.

There never seems to be a lull in the stream of new and novel hacks that people create around Microsoft’s Kinect. One of the more recent uses for the device comes from [Interactive Fabrication] and allows you to fabricate yourself, in a manner of speaking.
The process uses the Kinect to create a 3D model of a person, which is then displayed on a computer monitor. Once you have selected your preferred pose, a model of the image is rendered by a 3D plastic printer. Each scan results in a 3cm x 3cm plastic model complete with snap together dovetail joints allowing the models to be combined together. A full body scan can be constructed with three of these tiles, resulting in a neat “Han Solo trapped in Carbonite” effect.
Currently only about 1/3 of Kinect’s full resolution is being used to create these models, which is pretty promising news to those who would try this at home. Theoretically, you should be able to create larger, more detailed images of yourself provided you have a 3D printer at your disposal.
Keep reading for a quick video presentation of the fabrication process.

Few notes for those speculating/curious:
1) Video is real time, and runs same speed on JTAG
2) Core coverflow code is based around wiiflow 1.1 (credit will be given where due when complete). It has been strongly adapted to the xbox360 platform, including xui, and direct x
3) Skin is based around Ellipsis from XBMC and Team Blackbolt- we have permission from EqUiNoX to base it around this ( EqUiNoX is an ex-member of Team Blackbolt and a current member of Team FSD)
4) Music was done by Blackwolf from #freestyledash
5) Not a skin for FSD2.0, its also not a future update for FSD2.0- it does contain the FSD backbone- but separate for now. Currently, we are trying to get community participation in building a cover library similar to that of wiitdb.com
6) No release date- and its not close to ready- our intent is to show you what's coming so we as a whole have drive to build the cover database.

News via http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/dow...r-zune-hd.html
Name: Liberate
Version: 1.6.2 (Wi-Fi timeout fixed)
Author: Netrix, Microsoft (explorer.exe and wceload.exe)
Licenses: 'Free to distribute and modify, provided that credit is given' and Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Shared Source License (explorer.exe and wceload.exe)
This app liberates your Zune HD's display to allow you to run applications and games that render using GDI, DirectDraw or OpenGL ES 2.0. However, many things will not work without adding additional libraries that they need in order to run. (The most common ones are included.)
To find software that has been found to work so far, please see the Liberate Compatibility List. If you find that software that works, please add it to the table.
Anything that was made to work on Windows CE devices (StrongARM or ARM CPU) has a chance of working. If it was made for MIPS or SH3/SH4, it will definitely not work. Also, Windows Mobile software might work, but has a much lower chance of working.
Users can use the File Deployer to deploy their own files to use with Liberate. Just add your files to the Content folder, and deploy it. It will run automatically. Your files will be deployed to /Flash2/Files. A shortcut to that folder will appear on the Liberate desktop after running File Deployer, however rebooting will cause the shortcut to disappear. Your files will stay in /Flash2/Files and you will still be able to access them by double-tapping "My Device", "Flash2", then "Files".
Developers could create OpenZDK games/apps (or port existing software) that use GDI or OpenGL ES 2.0 and create a shortcut in Start -> Programs so users could run this app, then launch software through the Start menu.
Update:
-Added Wi-Fi timeout fix. (Thanks to svxs.)
-Enabled multi-touch and accelerometer use within Liberate through a service. (Refer to the Multi-touch test to see how it is done).
-Any CABs can now be installed by double-tapping them.
-Two touches cause the next single touch to be a right-click. Three touches disable/enable this functionality.
Yet to come: (in likely order)
-Backing up of Start menu shortcuts.
-Backing up of apps' Registry entries.
-More options for right-clicking.
Note: When the app is run, Explorer will show and then after a few seconds, the screen will become black for a second. Try not to touch the screen while it is black. If you do touch it, it will stay black. In that case, simply press the Home button once to fix it. Also, avoid pressing the Home button when the screen is not black or holding the power button (except to reboot the Zune), as doing so might cause the input to stop working.
Regarding CABs:
To install them, double-click them. Install them to a folder on /Flash2, otherwise the files will disappear after rebooting and they might not even install properly.
If it says there is not enough space, click "no" and install it anyway. If it says that it is not compatible (but the program is supposed to be compatible with ARM), install it anyway.
If it says that it is "not a valid Windows CE setup file", that probably because it is compressed. In that case, you would need to find one that is not compressed, or try extracting the files with MSCEInf and see if they work.

This is my first foray into ZuneHD gaming and also my first publicly released game. All of the credits are given on the instruction page. It's completely functional and looks pretty good (thanks to CobaltHex).
I have a few ideas as to where it could go next, especially as far as convenience, but suggestions are welcome as well as reports of glitches.
You may notice a flicker of the number score the first time you view it. This is not your device, and it doesn't seem to be a result of my programming. It does not mean anything is wrong, at all.
Here are a few screenshots:

Title update 7 for the Xbox 360 edition of gargantuan first-person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops has been released.
The fix-list ranges from improving matchmaking to fine-tuning Chopper Gunner runs. The Zombie lobby errors have been looked at, as have the exploits within the zombie game itself.
A patch for the much maligned PS3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops will arrive on Thursday, 3rd March, alongside the First Strike DLC.
Title Update 7, courtesy of the Call of Duty forum.- Matchmaking improvements to return higher quality results faster. This change includes settings that are tunable in the live environment, so tweaking may continue beyond initial release of this update.
- The in-game store now hides DLC map packs that do not match the language of the player's disc to decrease the possibility of users downloading the incorrect language version.
- Calling in a Chopper Gunner immediately after getting shot down in a Gunship will no longer end the Chopper Gunner run prematurely. Required timing-specific button presses.
- Split screen players are now able to change camera perspectives and cycle through players as a spectator.
- Addressed an issue where the most recent match played in Zombies could overwrite the best match played on the leaderboard.
- Improved Zombies lobbies to prevent players from erroneously receiving the error "Unable to join game session" under certain circumstances.
- Addressed a number of community-discovered Zombies gameplay exploits.
- Additional security feature updates.
- Additional sniper rifle tuning.

There will be no Online Pass code within the box of Crysis 2.
That's not because lazy shop person stole it, but because developer Crytek didn't want it, Gamertag Radio reports. And Crytek, an independent studio signed with EA Partners, has the luxury of being able to say no.
The reasons for opting out were two: first, when EA offered Online Pass to Crytek the feature was deemed too young and untested; second, Crytek wanted multiplayer played by as many people as possible, regardless of whether they bought Crysis 2 second-hand or brand new. Most console owners have never played a Crysis game, and Crytek wants to make as big a splash as possible.
Online Pass is commonplace in EA games today. The idea is to bundle a code in a box that unlocks multiplayer - or gifts various downloadable content - when redeemed. It's free to first-hand buyers but requires purchasing online should you acquire the game second hand.
EA is investigating for Eurogamer now

EA has revealed that the Xbox 360 demo of upcoming Crytek shooter Crysis 2, released last month, has been downloaded some 1.7 million times to date.
A PC version of the demo was released today, as was an updated 360 one. A PS3 demo is due to follow soon.
Crytek claims to have used feedback from the 360 demo to improve the full game, which is due for release March 25.
This is the franchise's first foray onto console, with the first two Crysis games having been PC-only. Crysis 2 is being released as part of a deal with EA Partners.

Microsoft has begun freeing up old unavailable (dead) Gametag names so that new users can register them again.
A 'dead' Gamertag refers to Gamertags that have previously been used but are now defunct and unavailable - which will soon be unlocked by MS for new registrants in no particular order.
"Starting today, we have begun the process of making previously used and unavailable (dead) Xbox LIVE Gamertags available," says Major Nelson.
"This process will take some time to complete, and no we can't tell you when the Gamertag you want might be available. If you are interested, you should check back regularly as we are reviving Gamertags daily."
If you find something you like, you can either sign up for a new account or change your current Gamertag name.
"Sign into Xbox LIVE and go to the My Xbox channel, then select Change Gamertag. From here you can either choose from the random name generator, or you can enter a specific Gamertag to see if it's available."
The Major reminds you that changing your Gamertag doesn't affect Gamerscore, Achievements or friends list. But it will affect your wallet - it costs 800 MS Points (£6.80) or the same as a fair few decent games on XBLA.
